FOUR PAGE TLS FROM ROBERT FINK 11/20/58

Fink, 11/20/58, N.P. CA. 1958 - FOUR PAGE TLS FROM ROBERT FINK 11/20/58 to Henry Miller from his close friend Robert Fink on 8vo., off-white bond in near fine condition. "Dear Henry:- / I need two paperback Colossi very badly. One for Edie's Spanish teachers also teaches French. He was at one time a student of Wallace Folie and for some curious reason never read any of your books! So I wish to give him Colossus, since he is a nice Jewish boychik and his wife is a typical New York girl from the era when all the Yiddish mamas [during the 20's] were naming their daughters Shirley. The Gentiles used other names. . . [ask your first wife!]. Anyway the enclosed is for the Colossi. / I don't know the author of that limerick "tome". It is banned like the Tropics so I can't get one although I have tried". What follows is more about Miller's new sound system, Fink's shopping for corduroy slacks for Miller & Capri pants for Eve, a note about Nexus & 28 'dirty' limericks, Bob's naughty specialty & Miller's fascination. A curious letter signed twice -at the bottom of page 1 & page 4. Page one in very good condition with one short closed tear repaired archivally, otherwise the following pages are in fine condition. Robert Finkelstein (later Fink) was a fan, correspondent, and benefactor of Henry Miller. Their friendship strengthened when Fink and his wife Edie moved to Los Angeles from Chicago in 1949. Fink soon found an excellent job in Los Angeles and opened his own successful electronics business. The Finks visited Big Sur on weekends, sometimes taking food and other gifts for which Miller reciprocated with manuscripts and water colors. Fink offered help in Miller's attempts to help other impoverished writers who appealed to him for funds, food or a place to stay. Fink also began defending Miller against vilifying editorials, writing articles praising Miller's works and character.         The Affluent Society

Houghton MIfflin, Boston 1958 - First Edition. Walter Heller's copy, with his stamp on front endpaper, "Please Return to Walter W. Heller." Heller was a leading American economist, a University of Minnesota professor and chairman of the Council of Economic Advisors under Kennedy and Johnson. Galbraith was probably the best known economist in the world during his lifetime. In The Affluent Society, his most famous book, Galbraith coined the phrase "the conventional wisdom," and argued for increased government spending on public projects and social programs, which no doubt influenced Heller to propose the "war on poverty" program to LBJ in 1963. Galbraith and Heller were good friends, both Keynesians and close advisors to JFK and LBJ, but they disagreed sharply over Heller's historic tax cut in 1964, widely credited with fostering the economic boom of the sixties. About fine in dustjacket with yellow background uniformly faded on spine panel, else very good, with shallow chipping and wear at spine ends, price-clipped. Signed by Galbraith on laid in publisher's slip. Under "With the compliments of the author," Galbraith has crossed out "the author" and signed it "Ken Galbraith."         The Magic Barrel

New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy, 1958. First edition of the author's first collection of short stories that went on to win the National Book Award. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author, "All good wishes to Fred and Louise Sincerely Bern Corvallis 1959." Near fine in a near fine dust jacket that shows light wear to the spine. The Magic Barrel, has been recognized as a classic from the time it was published in 1959. The stories are set in New York and in Italy (where Malamud's alter ego, the struggleing New York Jewish Painter Arthur Fidelman, roams amid the ruins of old Europe in search of his artistic patrimony); they tell of egg candlers and shoemakers, matchmakers, and rabbis, in a voice that blends vigorous urban realism, Yiddish idiom, and a dash of artistic magic. "In the short story, Malamud achieved an almost psalmlike compression. He has been called the Jewish Hawthorne, but he might just as well be thought a Jewish Chopin, a prose composer of preludes and noctures" (Mark Shechner, Partisan Review).

        Doctor Zhivago

London: Collins & Harvill, 1958. First edition in English. Octavo, original red cloth. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with light shelfwear to the extremities. A very nice example of this literary highspot. In his 1958 New Yorker review, Edmund Wilson called the novel "one of the very great books of our time… Doctor Zhivago will, I believe, come to stand as one of the great events in man's literary and moral history." It was not allowed to appear in the Soviet Union until 1987, twenty-seven years after the author's death.
