        The Civil War. A Narrative

New York: Random House,, 1958-74. 3 volumes, octavo. Maps to the text, some full-page. A fine copy. First editions. Signed by the author on publisher's blank of volume I. A superb work of narrative history, uncommon signed, here handsomely presented. Originally a novelist, Foote was approached by Random House with a commission for a centennial short history of the Civil War at the suggestion of Walker Percy. Having persuaded them to expand the project to three volumes to be completed over nine years, Foote was immersed in the project for the next 20 years, supporting himself with various research fellowships, grants, and loans from his friend Percy. In the late 80s Foote was one of the historians interviewed by Ken Burns for his award-winning documentary series The Civil War, and when it was first screened in 1990, the intensity and immediacy of Foote's delivery, and his passionate involvement with the material, had such an impact on the public that he became a star overnight. In a single week at the end of September, 1990, each volume of the paperback version sold 1,000 copies each day. By the middle of 1991, Random House had sold 400,000 sets of the trilogy. Foote later told Burns, "Ken, you've made me a millionaire.

Mirror for Magistrates

London: Anthony Blond. (1958). First. First edition. Octavo. 172 pp. Very good with some age-toning and scattered light stains to the endpapers, else near fine, in a near fine dustwrapper with some light soiling to the top edge, and light age-toning to the inside panel. Inscribed and Signed by Gibson in a very neat hand on the title page: "For Peter Taylor, with best wishes and many thanks, Richard Gibson, Paris September 1958." Peter Taylor was one of America's best short story writers, and winner of the 1985 PEN/Faulkner Award and the 1987 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Richard Gibson was awarded the John Hay Whitney Fellowship in 1951 to pursue writing this novel. He was drafted in the army, served in Europe, and by the late 1950s had become a member of the group of African-American expatriates centered in Paris around Richard Wright and James Baldwin. In a sequence of events in 1957-58 that became known as the "Gibson Affair," the CIA allegedly employed or otherwise utilized Gibson to promote pro-French sympathies, specifically regarding Algeria's fight for independence. This was dramatized by Richard Wright in his unfinished last novel, Island of Hallucination (see Michel Fabre's The Unfinished Quest of Richard Wright). A very nice association between Gibson and Taylor. .

[Dabei:] Ders. (1891-1953). Eigenh. Die Arbeit an der 1941 entstandenen und 1946-52 umfassend revidierten Oper bestimmte die letzten zwölf Jahre seines Lebens: "The outbreak of the war gave impetus to a project Prokofiev had sketched out in spring 1941, for an opera based on 'War and Peace'. His initial plan for a small-scale, intimate opera which would highlight the personal dramas in the novel was expanded, by the war aspects in particular, and [.] in August 1941 he began the music [.] The following April, he finished 'War and Peace' [.] He sent the score of the opera to Moscow for approval, and in the meantime began its orchestration [which he completed] in March 1943 [.] Following the advice of the Committee on the Arts in Moscow, Prokofiev had drastically revised the opera in the process; the war scenes had been extended and the patriotic elements strengthened. It was no longer an intimate opera but an epic and heroic work. Prokofiev's incentive in revising the score was the promise of a production of the opera at the Bol'shoy at the end of 1943, for which Eisenstein was to design the sets [.] But, as had happened so often, the performance was first cancelled, then postponed indefinitely. Throughout the rest of his life Prokofiev continually made revisions and additions to 'War and Peace', including the composition of two new scenes, in a series of attempts to secure performances. It was only in 1957, however, after his death, that anything like a complete version of the opera was staged" (New Grove). Durchgehend in russischer Sprache. Erschienen als Teil 6 der Werke (Sobranie sochinenii); Verlagsnummern M. 26793a G., M. 26793b G. und M. 26793v G. OCLC 19801829. New Grove 15, 298. MGG 10, 1649.         THE SUNDIAL

New York: Farrar, Straus and Cudahy,. [1958]. Octavo,. cloth-backed boards.. A fine copy in fine dust jacket with touch of wear at tail of spine. panel. A sharp copy. Books signed or inscribed by Jackson are. uncommon. (#100273). First edition. Presentation copy with signed inscription by Jackson on front free endpaper: "For Isabel Sherword -- / Gratefully, / Shirley Jackson." THE SUNDIAL, "one of the most bizarre works in Jackson's oeuvre, seems to have been a prelude to WE HAVE ALWAYS LIVED IN THE CASTLE: the Halloran family becomes convinced that the rest of the world is going to end, and the narrative tone suggests that this belief might in fact be correct; the novel is occupied with the family's preparations to continue life after the rest of humanity has ceased to exist. Both these novels, as well as a number of short stories -- especially the celebrated 'One Ordinary Day, with Peanuts' (1955) -- display the misanthropy that is a central element of Jackson's work, and one which she conveys with consummate skill ... All Jackson's work -- with the exception, perhaps of THE BIRD'S NEST, a clumsy novel about multiple personality -- is subtle, powerful and flawlessly written; it reveals Jackson's keen insight into human personality and human society and her cynical, even jaundiced view of the world and its occupants. She has left a legacy of complex, richly textured horror writing that requires little or no bloodletting for its haunting effectiveness." - S. T. Joshi, Pringle (ed), St. James Guide to Horror, Ghost & Gothic Writers, p. 292. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 4- 156. Tymn (ed), Horror Literature 4-120. Winter list, p. 269.

Eigenh. Korrekturen der Druckfahnen zu: Ferdinand Ebner. Gesammelte Werke. Im Auftrage der Ferdinand-Ebner-Gesellschaft herausgegeben von Michael Pfliegler und Ludwig Haensel. Bd. II: Die Wirklichkeit Christi. Brenneraufsätze. Für den Druck vorbereitet von Franz Seyr.

Wien, Thomas Morus Presse im Verlag Herder Wien, 1958. - 353, (3) SS. Gefalzte, beschnittene und einzeln klammergeheftete Einzellagen in Pappumschlag. 8vo.
