Typed Signed Letter (TSL) marked 'personal' of Anthony Eden, to John E. Hunt

1958. No binding. 5 x 8 inches, was folded now flat, typed signed letter to John E. (Edwin) Hunt of New Zealand. On Donhead House Shaftesbury blind embossed letterhead (Anthony Eden lived at Donhead House for a year following the Suez Crisis of 1956). Dated July 31st, 1958. Marked PERSONAL. Writing with appreciation and comments about the Suez Crisis of 1956,, and noting: "I was quite sure that in time the purpose I had in mind would be understood. My only regret now is that the two years which have elapsed have made the task a very difficult one for the free world". Very Good condition. Robert Anthony Eden, 1st Earl of Avon was an English Conservative politician who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1955 to 1957. He was also Foreign Secretary for three periods between 1935 and 1955, including during World War II. He is best known for his outspoken opposition to appeasement in the 1930s; his diplomatic leadership in the 1940s and 1950s; and the failure of his Middle East policy in 1956 that ended his premiership.Suez in retrospect: Following the defeat of the Arab armies by Israel in the Six Day War of 1967, Eden's own reputation, not least in Israel and the United States, soared, and he was deluged with letters of the "you were right in 1956" variety. In 1986, Eden's official biographer Robert Rhodes James re-evaluated sympathetically Eden's stance over Suez and in 1990, following the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, James asked: "Who can now claim that Eden was wrong?". Such arguments turn mostly on whether, as a matter of policy, the Suez operation was fundamentally flawed or whether, as such "revisionists" thought, the lack of American support conveyed the impression that the West was divided and weak. Anthony Nutting, who resigned as a Foreign Office Minister over Suez, expressed the former view in 1967, the year of the Arab-Israeli Six-Day War, when he wrote that "we had sown the wind of bitterness and we were to reap the whirlwind of revenge and rebellion". Conversely, D. R. Thorpe, another of Eden's biographers, suggests that had the Suez venture succeeded, "there would almost certainly have been no Middle East war in 1967, and probably no Yom Kippur War in 1973 also".         Are there any? A chess problem book. (Signed)

Stroud, Glos: Stroud News and Journal, [1958]. First printing. Hardcover. Good+. Duodecimo in green cloth with gilt spine and front board. pp 149. Signed and inscribed by the author on the ffep: "To A. F. Downey Jun. [?] with / best wishes from / Gerry Anderson / March 24/59." The first published work on Kriegspiel problems, which is still widely cited and recognized today among problemists. In a July 2006 article, the Problemist called it "a strong candidate for the title of 'most original chess problem book ever published?'?". The work was apparently held in high esteem by Bobby Fischer as well: a member of the British Chess Problem Society once wrote to Anderson, saying: "I write because I must have another copy of Are There Any? I had solved only up into the thirties when last night I incautiously carried it down to the Marshall Club to show it to Jack Collins. Then, seeing it in Jack?'s hands, Bobby Fischer pounced upon it in great excitement and before the evening was over the two of them had so made it theirs, were so comically oblivious of the mere owner, that I hadn?'t the heart to explain that I had brought it to show, not to bestow." The Australian-born Anderson was a pilot in WWI in the 88 Squadron and later became a diplomat in the Queen?'s service, but was reknowned in chess circles as a master composer. Anderson was also reputed to be the last person to have played Alexander Alekshin in tournament play in Lisbon (1946) before the latter's untimely death. Front board has several abrasive scuffs to cloth and there is a miniscule tear to the top of the ffep (not affecting signature), else very good. A very scarce book. OCLC lists only 9 copies in libraries worldwide. Betts, 39-21.

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company. (1958). First. First edition. A small stain on the front fly, small tears at the crown, and a bit of spine-toning, a sound, good copy without dustwrapper. Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley; "To Ian, wishing you the best of luck in all that you do -- Arthur. 2 Jan. '58." Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first publisher hardcover novel, Islands in the Sky, and was an award-winning New York Times journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood's End while visiting Macauley in Atlanta in 1952, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A nice association copy of this important collection of science-fiction short stories including his classic "The Nine Billion Names of God" and the 1956 Hugo Award-winning story "The Star." .

Lorenzi inci." L'importanza dell'opera è ben descritta da H. Lehman Haupt in un articolo pubblicato nel 1958 in "Amor Librorum": "Poggi's peculiar strength live reside in the effect of monumentality, gracefully and achieved by the integration of details into a sweeping patton of motion. He is aware of the tradition of human alphabet and must have seen the works of some of his predecessors, but what he put down is entirely his own". This lovely engraved oblong folio is one of the most delightful 18th century alphabets in the high rococo style. Reflecting the style of the early 18th century engraver, Giambattista Betti, the design of each splendid plate features an elegant cursive capital form of one of the two dozen letters of the 18th century alphabet (there were 24 letters, rather than 26, because "i" and "j" were the same letter, and because there was no "w". The capitals are elaborated with scrolls and flourishes and then inhabited by satyrs, mermaids, Medusa heads, birds, cats, dogs, snakes, and other creatures. The letters were designed by Poggi, drawn in ink by Andrea Bimbi, and engraved by Lorenzo Lorenzi". Bonacini segnala altresì "Given the work?s obvious esthetic achievement and inclusion in the major bibliographies of writing books, one would expect that Poggi would have produced additional works, but this item is the only one he is known to have done".
