        The Death Ship

Singapore: (Frederic Prokosch). 1958. First. First edition. Batik self-wrappers with printed gold foil label. 12mo. Fine. One of 44 copies, this copy is hand-numbered by Prokosch as "One of three special copies in Tokyo Paper". Signed by the author, and additionally Inscribed by the author on the front fly with a Christmas greeting. In original envelope hand-addressed by Prokosch. A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books". Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions", which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. Additionally he reprinted some of the books between 1978-1980, but the provenance of this book, and the owner's notes that accompany the book indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. OCLC locates a single copy, at Texas. .

        Leather-bound Autograph Book

Andover, MA, 1958. hardcover. very good. Rare leather-bound hardcover "Autographs" book with gild pages comprising the complete graduating class of 1858 with additional entries by distinguished instructors. Formerly the property of C.F. Hendrie, a student who painstakingly arranged the book so that the majority of autographs are in alphabetical order. Arguably one of the most successful graduating classes in the history of the institution. Seventy-five individual entries on separate leaves consisting of full-page handwritten letters, salutations, notes of encouragement, and poetry -- with fewer than 20 choosing to sign just their name and state of origin. A small sampling of some of the more successful alumni and educators include: Oliver Hazard Payne, a Civil War hero and Brigadier General at age 25, who co-founded Standard oil and U.S. Steel and founded Cornell Medical School; Charles Porter Mattocks, a Civil war hero and Brigadier General at age 24, who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for capturing 200 rebel soldiers and a battle flag; Huntington Wolcott Jackson, a Civil War hero and Colonel, who worked as an Aide-de-camp to General John Newton and later as an acclaimed attorney; Edwin Stewert, a Rear Admiral U.S.N. who distinguished himself during the Civil War but is best remembered for the radical changes he made concerning Naval finances and the role of the Navy Paymaster; Dr. William Seely, one of the leading occultists in America who contributed much to medical research that is standard and currently found in medical libraries today; Richard C. Morse, a Presbyterian Minister who is credited with building the Y.M.C.A. into the international organization it is today; Charles Marsh Meade, a Congregational Clergyman and acclaimed Biblical Scholar; Albert Egerton Adams, a Civil War hero and field officer who obtained the rank of Captain and died at the age of 56; Melville Cox Day, an architect and leading benefactor of Phillips Academy; John Phelps Taylor, a Doctor of Divinity, educator, and President of Phillips Academy; L. H. Taylor, the Principal of Phillips Academy; Cornelius Ladd Kitchel, a Prominent Clergyman, educator, and lecturer; Rev. Rowland H. Allen, a theologian and educator; George Lansing Raymond, an acclaimed poet and educator; John Harvey Treat, a prominent author of distinction; Leon T. Chamberlain, a renowned criminal lawyer and prosecutor. The majority of the above entries consist of autographed letters signed, some with interesting content. The rest have included salutations accompanied by full signatures. No writing on verso. Very good condition.

Qatar Petroleum Company - Guide to Qatar

Doha: Qatar Petroleum Company,, [c.1958] & 1965. Landscape octavo (202 × 260 mm). Wire-stitched in colour pictorial card wraps. Stylishly designed, richly illustrated from photographs, and with line-drawings, colour-printed throughout. Very good. First edition, with a tipped-in slip giving updated oil production statistics through to 1964. Extremely uncommon; OCLC records just two copies of the first title (Library of Congress and Dallas Public Library). A fascinating guide book to Qatar produced just before the transition to independence began, presented here as a press pack in a spiral-backed blue textured card folder lettered in gilt "With the compliments of Q.P.C", together with a copy of another introduction to the emirate: "Qatar: A Special Issue prepared for The Fifth Arab Petroleum Congress & The Seconed [sic] Arab Petroleum Exhibition Cairo–March 16th 1965" (landscape octavo, colour printed wraps, portrait frontispiece, and 9 pages of illustrations from photographs, 2 full-page sketch maps, tables and graphs to the text, no copy traced institutionally). Also included in the pack are maps of the Qatar and its capital: a folding 1:10,000 scale plan of Doha (397 × 480 mm), produced by Survey Section, Exploration Division, QPC in June 1960 (2 copies on OCLC); and a folding QPC 1:500,000 geological map of the Qatar peninsula (475 × 273 mm) "traced from Q/00.0336 Qatar map 1:250,000 compiled by R. V. Browne". Material relating to the mid-20th century development of the oil-industry in the Arabian Peninsula is markedly uncommon.

        Odes / Odas.

Buenos Aires Colombo 1958 - Quarto. 32pp. From an edition of 52 copies, this is one of thirty-two copies printed on Ingres. An elegantly-printed bilingual edition of Keats's Odes, in English and Spanish, each with a full-page lithograph by Raúl Veroni of the poem's subject. The first illustration is signed in pencil by the artist. The collection includes such poems as "Ode on a Grecian Urn" and "To a Nightingale," with English and Spanish version of the poems opposite each other on facing pages. Veroni collaborated with the prominent Argentinean publisher Francisco A. Colombo for many years, beginning in 1937 when he was still a student at the National Academy of Fine Arts. The experience prepared him well to open his own graphic studio in the 1970s. Bound in off-white printed wrappers, with original glassine. This is the fourth volume in a series of poetry chapbooks, La Cabellera, by Veroni. Two small spots of discoloration to rear wrapper, and a couple of faint spots to page edges. Very fine.
