The Drover's Cook and other Verses

F H Johnston, Sydney Australia 1958 - A genuinely rare 1st edition of Australian poetry with dedication to this bookseller's father. Dust jacket is in fair condition and is browning to the spine with small losses. The original jacket is a form of tracing paper with a cobweb pattern visible when held to the light. Exceptionally scarce jacket is fragile and has been placed in a loose protective sleeve. The book is well preserved with no major faults. The book is inscribed to Noel Miles with my compliments Tom Quilty. Noel was a geologist for a mining company that worked the Hall's Creek - De Grey area in the 1950's. Thomas John Quilty (1 April 1887 - 1979) was an Australian station owner, pastoralist, philanthropist, and bush poet. To this day he still holds the record for the largest freehold land acreage in Australia's history; over 3 million acres for a single property. In total, he controlled over 4.5 million acres of land. The book also comes with a newspaper clipping (Obituary) from a WA newspaper. "WA Cattleman dies at 93" [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A CARP WATER (WOOD POOL) AND HOW TO FISH IT. BY "BB".

Putnam. London. - 1958 1st edition. 8vo (145 x 222mm). Pp72. B/w illustrations by the author, map. Dark green cloth, spine titled in gilt. Quite foxed o/w good-plus in chipped dust-wrapper. * The first of the modern carp fishing books, published in Putnam's "Fisherman's Choice" series. One of BB's most attractive and collectable books. * 1cm x 2cm chip at head spine. Previous owner's signature on front end-paper. "No species has ["BB"] fished for more keenly or observed more closely than the carp. Ten years ago it was considered that the carp could be caught only by witch-craft or by accident. Today, twenty-pounders are fairly commonplace and there is a rod-caught fourty-four-pounder (the record as this book goes to press) swimming at the London Zoo aquarium. And it is perfectly fair to say that all this has happened through the efforts of "BB". The revolution in carp fishing came about largely as the result of a book "BB" wrote called Confessions of a Carp Fisher. This book encouraged Richard Walker and others to crack the carp's secrets. So it was inevitable that "BB", a founder member of the Carp Catchers Club, whould soon own and stock his private carp lake. This book is the record of that lake and how he turned barren water into a first-class fishery." Chapters include: The way to the water; Stocking the Wood Pool; Carp weather; The island battle; Night fshing; Congo Channel; Hints on carp tackle; Habits of tench; The Little Summer of St. Luke.
