You ought to be used to walking home by now.

1958 1958 - Sheet size: 190 ×139 mm. Stamped on verso for publication in the Daily Mail, 5 June 1958. Pen and ink and blue pencil crayon on wove paper. The London bus strike continued for five weeks. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

        [Galleys]: Exodus

Garden City: Doubleday. 1958. First. Quartos. Three thick bradbound volumes with leaves printed rectos only. 1164pp., (paginated serially). Manuscript stated "Unpublished... and is the property of Leon Uris" probably distributed as a galley or for in-house use. A couple of leaves pulled through, some erosion at the edges of the wrappers, good, but a remarkable survivor in this cumbersome format. The galley includes a special four-page introduction by Uris for advance readers that details the long road he traveled in researching the book, such as moving to Israel and Cyprus with his family for two years, an attack by the Jordanians while visiting Jerusalem, and the sixteen-man squad of Israeli paratroopers that escorted him on a patrol of the Negev Desert. Basis for the epic Otto Preminger film with an all-star cast that included Paul Newman, Eva Marie Saint, Ralph Richardson, Peter Lawford, Lee J. Cobb, Sal Mineo, and John Derek. Rare in this format. .

The two eventually became great friends, with Pynchon being Fariña's Best Man at his wedding to Mimi Baez.         21 Hand Illustrated 1950s Vernacular Gay Chap Books

[Circa 1958]. Oblong 24mos. Measuring 5" x 8". Illustrated throughout with original ink and watercolor drawings. Each 8pp. Stiff paper wrappers with index cards used for pages and bound with staples or brads. Overall near fine with some wear at the corners and light reading creases to the front wrap along the spine. An elaborate and vibrant collection of 21 gay cartoon books that appear to have been illustrated by one person. Each features very graphic and explicit tales of boy meets boy - and sometimes another boy (and in a few cases a werewolf, or Elvis Presley, or Dick Tracy and ... well, you get the idea). Each is lovingly composed of seven or eight index cards that have been illustrated on the unlined side and bound into hand decorated stiff wraps, some with applied elements. Though undated, the fashions, furniture, and cultural references suggest the late 1950s with titles such as Miss Elvis Presley, I Was a Teen-Age Werewolf, and Space Girl starring Flash Gordon. A unique collection of handcrafted drawings revealing the unvarnished exploits (or at least the fantasies) of a sexually active gay man of the 1950s with more than a dose of figurative and literal tongue-in-cheek humor and pun filled titles, such as Ima Hoor Presents: Lover, a Sexascope Production. The optimistic portrayal of certain physical attributes of the characters certainly parallel or reflect the similarly endowed characters of Tom of Finland, or might possibly even predate them slightly. Due to the singular and clandestine nature of the books, this collection would be almost impossible to recreate today. Originally held for many years by an art dealer who never encountered anything like it, the collection has been in the possession of only one other private owner since. Housed in a specially made slipcase. .
