[Various places, including Boston, 1958. Bound volumes in modern three quarter morocco and boards, gilt-lettered spines. Separate issues in original wrappers. One wrapper issue with front wrapper detached and rear lacking, another with both wrappers detached but present. A few issues in bound volumes trimmed and mounted on stiff paper. Others with occasional archival repairs. All with old library marks, bound volumes with library attribution at toe of spine. Overall quite clean. Very good. A massive 109-issue run, beginning with the first issue, of this most durable and popular American almanac. The almanac was often the only reference work found in many American homes, and it provided both essential agricultural information and casual diversion. These issues contain notices regarding the courts of New England, calendars of college vacations, current events, poesy, literary bits, history, and planting, weather, and road conditions. The helpful hints regarding agriculture include articles on cultivation of corn, potatoes, carrots, and fruit trees; manuring; cure of diseases in crops and trees, and more. As times change, the text of the almanac keeps pace, offering insight into the evolution of the American domestic scene. As the almanac gained in popularity, sundry issue points were introduced as the almanac was printed in several different locations. While the vast majority of the present offering were printed in Boston, other places of publication include Brookline, Providence, and Dublin, New Hampshire. The title was formally changed to THE OLD FARMER'S ALMANAC... beginning with the issue for 1848. While many institutions possess runs of equal or greater size, they are uncommon in the market.

Application of a technique for research and development program evaluation" in Operations Research 7 No. 5 September-October 1959, pp. 646-669. AND "Critical Path Planning and Scheduling" in Proceedings of the Eastern Joint Computer Conference Dec. 1-3, 1959, pp. 160-173

FIRST EDITIONS IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF THE TWO PIONEERING TECHNIQUES FOR PROJECT PLANNING AND MONITORING, commonly called the Critical Path Method (CPM) and Project Evaluation Review Technique (PERT). Quite independently, both techniques were developed in the United States in the late 1950s. PERT is a statistical mathematics tool. Formal work on on it began in early 1958 with the objective of creating "a management method for handling the hundreds of contractors who would be designing, constructing and testing the POLARIS submarine and missile systems" for the Navy (Stretton, A Short History of Modern Project Management, PM World Today). It was designed specifically to analyze and represent the tasks involved to successfully complete any given project. "In the PERT network, the emphasis was… on project events or milestones instead of the project activities" (ibid). This meant that the methodology was able "to incorporate uncertainty by making it possible to schedule a project while not knowing precisely the details and durations of all the activities. It is more of an event-oriented technique rather than start- and completion-oriented, and is used more in projects where time is the major factor rather than cost. It is applied to very large-scale, one-time, complex, non-routine infrastructure and Research and Development projects" (Wikipedia). CPM, a term developed for marketing purposes, was developed between 1956 and 1959 in a 'think tank' group at E. I du Pont de Nemours and in conjunction with a group at Remington Rand Univac. Technically speaking, it is an algorithm employed for the scheduling of a set of project activities. Both CPM and PERT techniques are based on networks and both use the concept of critical paths and slack. The main differences are that while PERT is probabilistic, CPM is deterministic; while PERT is event-oriented, CPM is activity-oriented; while PERT analysis is concerned essentially with the time factor and does not usually consider costs, CPM analysis attempts to tease out the relationship between project duration and cost; while PERT is used for non-repetitive projects, CPM is used for repetitive ones; and while PERT can be analyzed statistically, with CPM statistical analysis is not applicable.         Les Américaines

Paris: Robert Delpire,, 1958. Oblong octavo. Original laminated boards decorated with a design by Saul Steinberg. Illustrated throughout with monochrome plates from photographs by Robert Frank. A stunning copy. First edition, first printing. "Robert Frank's masterpiece has become so much the photobook of legend in its first American edition [Grove Press, New York, 1959] that it is often forgotten that Delpire's original Paris edition was a different book. Its accompanying texts, gathered by Alain Bosquet, placed it more in a socio-documentary context - with a politically antagonistic, even anti-American point of view. What has made this arguably the most renowned photobook of all? Firstly, and perhaps most importantly, the majority of the pictures are instantly memorable, 'dry, lean, and transparent,' as John Szarkowski has said of them, yet also weighty and profound, even heartstopping. Secondly, there is the sequencing...         The Travels of Ibn Battuta

Cambridge: for the Hakluyt Society at the University Press,, 1958-2000. 1325-1354 A. D. Translated with revisions and notes from the Arabic text edited by C. Defrémery and B. R. Sanguinetti by H. A. R. Gibb. 5 volumes, octavo. Original light blue cloth, titles to spine gilt within rolled compartments, publisher's naval device to front boards gilt, front board of vols. I-IV with French fillet border stamped in blind, vol. I fore and bottom edges untrimmed. With the dust jackets. Illustrated with sketch maps, city plans and photographic plates, several folding. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedowns of vols. I, IV and V. Vols. I-II with occasional light spotting and extremities very faintly bumped, vol. III edges foxed. An excellent set in the generally bright dust jackets a touch rubbed in places with vol. I price-clipped with small portion of loss at foot of spine and that of vol. II rather foxed. First complete edition in English of the Rihlah of Ibn Battuta, a man "rightly celebrated as the greatest traveller of pre-modern times" (Dunn, The Adventures of Ibn Battuta, a Muslim Traveller of the Fourteenth Century, p. 1). 'Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah al-Lawati al-Tanji ibn Battuta (1304-1368/69) was a jurist from Tangiers who, upon completing the Hajj, decided to take advantage of the extensive trade routes then linking the western Eurasian landmass to the Far East; travelling over land and sea, he "is estimated to have covered 75,000 miles in forty years" (Howgego). His wanderings encompassed North Africa, the Horn of Africa, West Africa and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, South Asia, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and China, and his Rihlah, more properly Tuhfat al-nazzar fi ghara'ib al-amsar wa 'aja'ib al-asfar (A Gift for those who Contemplate the Oddities of Cities and Marvels of Journeys), was without doubt the most important, "longest and in terms of its subject matter, the most complex" (p.4) example of this popular genre, which usually just told of a pilgrim's progress from the Maghreb to Mecca. The work was unknown outside Muslim countries until the beginning of the nineteenth century when some partial translations were offered, Johann Gottfried Ludwig Kosegarten's in German in 1819 followed by Samuel Lee's English edition, this last based on an abridgement purchased by Burckhardt in Egypt and deposited by him at Cambridge in 1829. But following the French conquest of Algeria five manuscripts emerged; "These documents were subsequently transferred to the Bibliothèque National in Paris. Two of them represent the most complete versions of the narrative that have ever come to light. The others are partial translations, one of which carries the autograph of Ibn Juzayy, Ibn Battuta's editor. Working with these five documents, two French scholars, C. Defrémery and B.R. Sanguinetti published a printed edition of the Arabic text, together with a translation in French and an apparatus of notes and variant textual readings. Since then, translations of the work, in every case prepared from [this] text, have been published in many languages" (ibid). Sir Hamilton Gibb, the translator in the present instance, had left Oxford in 1955 to become professor of Arabic at Harvard; "Teaching, administration, and academic statesmanship left him less time for research, but he was able to take up again some of his earlier interests in history and literature, and in particular to undertake a complete translation of the travels of Ibn Battuta; his vast knowledge of Arabic and sensitive feeling for the nuances of literary style made him a remarkably good translator" (ODNB).

        Voyages Fantastiques

1958. Signed. CYRANO, Savinen de.Voyages Fantastiques.Paris: Joseph Foret, [1958].Limited first edition of Buffet?'s interpretation of Cyrano, expressed in 18 superb folio dry-point etchings (two double-page), an unnumbered ?"exemplaire d?'artiste?" from a total edition of only 281 copies, inscribed, ?"Pour Guy et Malou, affectueusement, Bernard.?"In Voyages Fantastiques, ?"the first and perhaps the only example of an epistemological novel,?" first published in two parts, 1657 and 1662, Cyrano addresses some of the questions asked by l7th-century Rationalists concerning the world and man?'s place in it, particularly the question of knowledge and of the scientific method. Voyages Fantastiques, however, is not simply the optimistic affirmation of the scientific method: ?"The scientific adventure becomes in the end a philosophical one; the voyage becomes a quest, an allegory, a symbol?" (Jacques Prévot). To his admirers, artist Bernard Buffet was ?"pure genius.?" He was admitted in Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts at the age of 15, and only five years later won the ?"Prix de la Critique.?" During the 1950s, Buffet produced a number of livres d?'artistes, including Cyrano?'s Voyages, which ?"sold out within 48 hours?" (Time Magazine). Architectural in construction, superbly drawn, and carefully composed, these pictures are representative of Buffet?'s trademark use of strong blacks and muted grays. ?"Concerning painting,?" he insists, ?"we do not talk about it, we do not analyze it, we feel it.?" Text in French.Artist and the Book, 36.Original slipcase and chemise expertly repaired. Fine condition, inscribed.
