        THE DOOMSTERS.

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1958., 1958. First edition. First edition. Three small numbers stamped on front fly leaf, else fine in dust jacket lightly rubbed at spine ends and a few tiny nicks to to top edge of front cover. Lew Archer is hired by Carl Hallman, the desperate-eyed junkie scion of an obscenely wealthy political dynasty, to investigate the suspicious deaths of his parents, Senator Hallman and his wife Alicia. Archer soon discovers that orange groves may have been where the Hallmans made their money, but they'd invested heavily in political intimidation and police brutality to shore up their wealth. After years of double-crossing and dirty-dealing, the family seems to be on the receiving end of a death-blow. With two dead already and another member in the nuthouse, Archer races to crack the secret before another Hallman is murdered. Housed in a cloth slipcase.

Autograph letter signed by C.S. Lewis from 1951, discussing the author's reaction to young author Ray Bradbury

N.p.: N.p., 1958. Autograph Letter Signed from C.S. Lewis to a fan named Mr. Rutyearts, discussing his reaction to the then-new science fiction author Ray Bradbury. The letter is dated April 28, 1958, Magdalene College in Cambridge, and reads: "Dear M. Rutyearts / I enclose a photo; whether good or not I do not know, but it is the only one I can find. / Bradbury is a writer of great distinction in my opinion. Is his style almost too delicate, too elusive, too "nuancé" for S.F. matter? In that respect I take him and me to be at opposite poles; he is a humbled disciple of Corot and Debussy, I an even humbler disciple of Titian and Beethoven. / With all good wishes / Yours sincerely / C.S. Lewis." 1 page, 4.5 x 7 inches, Near Fine condition, lacking the original mailing envelope, with just a touch of creasing.

Les Américains. Photographies de Robert Frank. Textes réunis et présentés par Alain Bosquet

Paris: Robert Delpire, 1958. 172, [2] S., Or.Pbd. mit einer Deckelillustration, kl.8°, quer. Encyclopédie essentielle, vol 5. Parr/Badger I, S. 247. Schnitt etwas angestaubt. Insgesamt gutes Exemplar.

Marchand du Sel, ecrits de Marcel Duchamp.

Paris: Le Terrain Vague, Collection "391, 1958. Affetctionately inscribed by Duchamp to Naum Gabo. First edition, one of 2000 copies on Alfa paper. Numerous illustrations throughout, celluloid illustration tipped onto front endpaper, 23 black and white plates and numerous illustrations in text. 8vo., original pictorial wrapper with an image of Duchamp on the cover, largely unopened. Few creases to spine, slight rubbing to edges, generally a very good copy. Presentation copy inscribed by Duchamp on the half title to his great friend Naum Gabo and his wife "Cher Myriam, Cher Gabo, Ce ne sont pas mes memoires, affectueusement, Marcel". With the booklabel of Naum Gabo, the important Russian Constructivist sculptor and pioneer of kinetic art, as was Duchamp with his Bicycle Wheel. This compliled collection of notes and writings by Duchamp took its title from an aphorism by the French surrealist poet Desnos which used the fact that 'merchand du sel' (salt seller) sounds like Marcel Duchamp. A significant part is made up of his notes relating to his major work "The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors" as well as his judgements and criticisms of other artists which are fascinating.

In Hebrew with English translation. Minor flaws. Fine condition.Headed ""In the Renewed State of Israel."" In part, ""The third Knesset, despite the difficult crises it experienced three times, lasted longer than its predecessor. The elections for the third Knesset took place on July 26, 1955, and [the elections] for the fourth Knesset on December 3, 1959. That is four years and over four … months. Those who have the right to vote in these elections ate 1,218,483, two and a half times more than [the number] for the first Knesset. The large party was Herut, which received for the first time 17 seats. Mapam and Ahdut Ha'Avoda, which entered the first elections as a united party and received … 19 seats and were the second party after …, this time received together only 16 seats: Mapam 9, and Ahdut Ha'Avoda 7 … The General Zionists dropped down as well.         SOCIETE PARITYS Et Les TISSUS LEBOTYS. Collection Hiver 1958 - 59

Societe Paritys / Lebotys, Paris 1958 - 80 pp. 12 color fashion drawings; ~590 pasted and tipped-in fabric samples 16-1/8" x 12-1/8" A mid-century salesman's sample catalogue from the winter collection of Parisian firm Société Paritys, a haberdashery and fabric supplier established in 1946 and still in operation today. The fabric samples have been supplied by Lebotys, a couture design firm in its own right, and highly regarded for the quality of its textiles. As we find record of Lebotys having issued catalogues of its own collections in both the 1930s and 1960s, we speculate that the two firms collaborated for a limited time, possibly due to continuing post-war shortages and the need to adapt to the rapidly changing clothing market of the 1950s.The late 1950s saw a revolution in French fashion ? and, by extension, Western fashion in general ? due in no small part to the influence of material factors underlying the purely aesthetic side of the industry: availability of fabric, continuing technological advances in synthetics, and the surging post-war economies of America and Europe. The reluctant expansion of haute couture into the ready-to-wear market during the latter half of the century, and the increasing reliance on synthetic fabrics to meet the demand, would ultimately spell a major shift in the industry, one that would impact fashion trends for decades to come. Some fashion houses, like Dior, whose ?New Look? revitalized fashion at the beginning of the decade, successfully managed to adapt by issuing couture ready-to-wear lines. Some, however, even long-established houses, survived the war only to be undone by the prosperity that followed. The collaboration here of Société Paritys and Lebotys, as well as the fabrics offered and styles displayed, leads us to infer that the two firms were likely targeting the growing ready-to-wear market. The fabrics include a variety of silks, cottons, wools, mohair, etc., as well as nylon, fibranne, rayon, Rhodia, tergal, crylor, lurex, viscose, imitation fur, and other ?Matieres Synthètiques,? often in blends, and advertising their washable and/or (anti)wrinkling qualities. The styles in the illustrations, still heavily influenced by the ?New Look,? emphasize wasp-waisted dresses, hourglass silhouettes, etc.No copies located on OCLC, nor the major French institutions (as searched on KVK). Light extremity wear to boards; bumping to upper corner of front board; short split to front and rear joints. Page block lightly foxed, foxing/spotting scattered throughout. Few white nylon fabric samples discolored by paste beneath. Fabric samples otherwise clean and bright, with only minor occasional creasing/fraying. Overall, VG. Post binder with 3 brass posts. Publisher's pictorial glazed boards, red cloth joints [Attributes: Hard Cover]
