The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1958 10th Impression in Original Dustjacket with Custom Slipcase

Allen & Unwin, London 1958 - 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1958. This book is in beautiful Near Fine condition, with beautiful bright clean and unmarked green boards. No previous owner names or any writing noted. No foxing or offsetting noted. The map endpapers are clean and bright, unmarked. The bright & clean boards are the original green cloth with dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own Mountains and Dragon design, with a couple of lightly bumped corners, and no fading of the bright green covers. The title verso has the full printing history up to this tenth impression of 1958. The original dustjacket is correctly marked the 10th impression, and would appear to be the original as both book and dustjacket are remarkably well preserved. In 1957 (Ninth Impression book) Houghton Mifflin ordered a number of sheet sets to be imported from A&U for the US 1957 Ninth Printing, however after A&U had already printed the full run, HM backed out of part of the order due to import costs and reduced their order by 1,000 sheet sets. So A&U assumed they would have 1,000 more UK books than originally planned and as such they had Jackets produced for this overrun. Subsequently, HM changed their mind again and took the 1,000 sheet sets they had canceled, thus leaving A&U with 1,000 extra Ninth Impression Jackets. They simply used those extra jackets on the 1958 Tenth Impression Books. So there should be 1000 copies of the 1958 UK Tenth Impression book with a Ninth Impression Jacket, which would make this even more scarce than the 3,500 copies of the Tenth Impression books in the Tenth Impression Jackets. The dustjacket is not price clipped and in Near Fine condition, with a tiny amount of rubbing to the tips of the folds, lacking any of the normal tears to the edges. Shows a line of soiling the the interior edges of the flaps. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed. A beautiful copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. A custom faux leather slipcase included, featuring the JRRT Monogram to the front cover of the slipcase. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Near Fine / Near Fine.         Our Man In Havana

London / Melbourne / Toronto: William Heinemann Ltd.. First Edition.. Excellent, FINE condition of the dustjacket and unusually FINE condition of the Volume itself. . First Edition. London / Melbourne / Toronto, William Heinemann Ltd., 1958. 13.5cm x 20cm. 273 pages. Original hardcover with unclipped dustjacket in protective Mylar. Excellent, FINE condition of the dustjacket and unusually FINE condition of the Volume itself. Our Man In Havana (1958) is a novel set in Cuba by the British author Graham Greene. He makes fun of intelligence services, especially the British MI6, and their willingness to believe reports from their local informants. The book predates the Cuban Missile Crisis, but certain aspects of the plot, notably the role of missile installations, appear to anticipate the events of 1962. It was adapted into a film of the same name in 1959, directed by Carol Reed and starring Alec Guinness. The novel, a black comedy, is set in Havana during the Fulgencio Batista regime. James Wormold, a vacuum cleaner retailer, is approached by Hawthorne, who offers him work for the British secret service. Wormold's wife had left him and now he lives with his sixteen-year-old beautiful, devoutly Catholic but materialistic and manipulative daughter Milly. Since Wormold does not make enough money to pay for Milly's extravagances, he accepts the offer of a side job in espionage. Because he has no information to send to London, Wormold fakes his reports using information found in newspapers and invents a fictitious network of agents. Some of the names in his network are those of real people (most of whom he has never met) and some are made up. Wormold only tells his friend and World War I veteran, Dr. Hasselbacher, about his spy work, hiding the truth from Milly. [wikipedia]

        Endgame

Grove Press, New York 1958 - New York: Grove Press, 1958. First edition. Near Fine. One of the 26 numbered and signed copies, the true first edition. Very near fine brown cloth over off-white paper boards. No wear or soiling to the fragile boards, corners completely sharp. No soiling to the easily soiled cloth spine, lettering completely clear, spine maybe just a touch lighter than the rest of the 1/4 cloth (see last photo and zoom in). There is a little fold in the cloth on the top of the spine that is not a bump. See photos. Contents very near fine, no foxing, no markings of any kind in the book. Sewn binding tight. The deep gutter-edges of several gatherings toned (1/4 inch) by the glue that was used in the binding. The best copy of an impossibly rare book. Many, including Harold Bloom, have argued that Endgame is the greatest dramatic work of the twentieth century. Beckett thought it his best. Because of the severe limitation (26 copies), the book will eventually become a Black Tulip of twentieth century literature. Only one (worn) copy at auction in the last decade. He used elements from the film itself to explain the actual animation process and the traveling exhibit was entitled "The Art of Animation: A Walt Disney Retrospective." To support the original touring exhibit as well as Sleeping Beauty, Walt had writer Bob Thomas put together a book entitled The Art of Animation.

These Thousand Hills (Original screenplay from the 1959 film, signed by actor Don Murray)

Twentieth Century-Fox, Los Angeles 1958 - Final script for the 1959 film. Based on the novel of the same name by Pulitzer Prize winning author A.B. Guthrie, Jr., the third installment in Guthrie's trilogy about the Old West. SIGNED by actor Don Murray on the title page. An unusual Western, with touches of the darkness characteristic of film noir, "These Thousand Hills" is a character study of a cowboy played by Don Murray who aspires to ascend the ranks of the burgeoning Wyoming society. He borrows the life savings of a saloon girl to start his ranch, and then marries into a higher rank. Though at first he distances himself from the saloon girl in order to run for US Senator, Murray must then come to her aid when a rancher has beaten her.An ambitious film from director Fleischer in which we are asked to question the value of financial success and the labels of "good" and "evil." Some beautiful cinematic moments, with Lee Remick giving a standout performance as Callie the saloon girl. Set in Wyoming. Blue titled wrappers, noted as FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 181 and production No. 740, dated May 22, 1958. Title page present, noted as Final Script, with credits for screenwriter Hayes. 114 leaves, mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between May 26, 1958 and June 2, 1958 Pages Very Good plus, wrapper Very Good plus, bound internally with three gold brads.         Power and Diplomacy

Cambridge: Harvard University Press 1958 - 8vo., yellow boards and black cloth lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket. First edition, first printing. A presentation copy, inscribed: "To Lois and Phil, who shared the experiences which shaped these views, Dean Acheson," on the front endpaper. ---- The recipient, Philip C. Jessup, a judge on the International Court of Justice at The Hague and veteran U.S. diplomat, was credited with playing a major role in ending the Soviet blockade of West Berlin. Jessup was a U.S. representative to the United Nations General Assembly, as well as a U.S. ambassador at large from 1949 until his resignation in 1953. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then-Secretary of State Dean Acheson. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," General Dwight D. Eisenhower heralded Jessup's "devotion to the principles of Americanism." McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year. Jessup's annotations appear throughout this volume. A significant presentation copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Our Man In Havana.

William Heinemann Ltd., London / Melbourne / Toronto 1958 - First Edition. [wikipedia] Sprache: English Excellent, FINE condition of the dustjacket and unusually FINE condition of the Volume itself.

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1958 10th Impression in Original Dustjacket with Custom Slipcase

London: Allen & Unwin, 1958. 2nd Edition. Original Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine. J.R.R. Tolkien. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
