        The Town

New York, NY: Rancom House, 1957. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Plus/No Jacket. Signed by Author(s). Number 438 of 450 inscribed, limited first edition copies; 371 pages; signed by William Faulkner. Professionally rebound in handsome Morocco with banded, gilt embossed spine, all edges gilt, marbled end papers, a bit of rubbing at extremities, especially along bottom edges of boards, internally clean and bright with sound binding. The Town is the second novel of the "Snopes" trilogy, following The Hamlet (1940) and completed by The Mansion (1959). Each chapter is narrated from the point of view of one of three characters: Chick Mallison, Gavin Stevens, or V.K. Ratliff. Set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha County, based on Lafayette County, Mississippi, where Faulkner spent most of his life. William Faulkner is one of the most celebrated writers in American literature specifically known for writing southern fiction. Though his work was published as early as 1919, and largely during the 1920s and 1930s, Faulkner was relatively unknown until receiving the 1949 Nobel Prize in Literature, for which he became the only Mississippi-born Nobel laureate. Two of his works, A Fable (1954) and his last novel The Reivers (1962), won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Well packaged. Ships insured.

England: Historical Section, Admiralty. Hardcover. 95 pages. Index. Thirteen fold-out plans.         Ihya' Ulum al-Din [ The Revival of the Religious Sciences, Arabic edition. Complete set in 4 volumes ].

Dar Ihya' al-Kutub al-Arabiyya, (1957). 4 vols. Half leather hardcovers. Text in Arabic. This is perhaps the best edition; it was published 'Isa al-Babi al-Halabi wa Awladahu and reprinted by Dar Ihya' al-Kutub al-'Arabiyya with an introduction by Dr. Badawi Tabana (kairo) in 1957; this was then known as the Tabana edition. (ex-libris stamp on endpapers, paper sl. browned) Although very good set, see picture. 'The Revival of the Religious Sciences is widely regarded as the greatest work of Muslim spirituality, and is perhaps the most read work in the Muslim world, after the Qur'an. - The Revival of the Religious Sciences is divided into four parts, each containing ten chapters. Part one deals with knowledge and the requirements of faith - ritual purity, prayer, charity, fasting, pilgrimage, recitation of the Qur'an, and so forth; part two concentrates on people and society - the manners related to eating, marriage, earning a living, and friendship; parts three and four are dedicated to the inner life of the soul and discuss first the vices that people must overcome in themselves and then the virtues that they must strive to achieve.'.

        A Winter's Love

Philadelphia and New York: J.B. Lippincott. (1957). First. First edition. Small remnant of a former owner's label on the front pastedown, else fine in near very good dustwrapper with the usual sunning to the spine-lettering, and some modest chipping, mostly at the crown. In our experience one of the author's scarcest titles. A novel for adults about a troubled marriage and an old friend who interjects himself into the middle of it, written before L'Engle became famous for her children's fantasies. .

Chronica Franciscana de las Provincias del Peru

Academy of American Franciscan History, Washington DC & Madrid 1957 - Large 8vo, xciii, 1195 pp. with facsimiles and photos in b/w. First published in 1651 this is the second edition, "with Notes and Introduction by Lino G. Canedo, O.F.M." and the first in the series Franciscan Historical Classics. Cordova Salinas was a native of Lima, from a distinguished family. His history comprehends all of the South American continent except Brazil, from Panama south. Because of the early and important role in South America of his order, which looked upon the native peoples in a benign manner, always eager to learn their languages and customs the better to evangelize them, and because of his completely free access to all the Franciscan archives of this huge province, Salina Cordova's history is of great importance. Virtually unobtainable for 300 years, this superb reprinting, with excellent notes and introduction, is particularly valuable. This is copy #94 of 100 numbered copies on special paper from a Limited Edition of 750 total. Beautifully bound in full Mexican tree calf with raised bands and red morocco spine labels with gilt rules and titles. Fine copy -- as new. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Remarks of Senator John F. Kennedy (Dem. Mass.), Chairman, Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on UN Affairs

Washington, D.C., 1957. A few pale stains, some light soiling. Mechanically reproduced typescript. 15 pages on 8 leaves, 4to, letterhead of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations. Stapled. Kennedy opens his remarks to the President: "The most powerful single force in the world today is neither Communism nor capitalism, neither the H-Bomb nor the guided missile -- it is man's eternal desire to be free and independent. The great enemy of that tremendous force of freedom is called, for want of a more precise term, imperialism -- and today that means Soviet imperialism and, whether we like it or not, and though they are not to be equaled, Western imperialism." From this he makes his argument that the U.S. support Algeria's effort to gain independence from France.

        Atlas Shrugged

New York: Random House, 1957. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A Near Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. Both the book and the jacket suffer from a faint dampstain to the lower rear panel and board (only visible from the verso). End papers have faint tape-ghosts from an old jacket protector and the spine is very slightly skewed, otherwise a very tidy copy. The jacket retains it's deep, rich colors as well as the critical $6.95 and 10/57 date code, essential for the first issue jacket. Rand's magnum opus, where she develops her objectivist theory and explores the question, "what if society's genius goes on strike?" Rand considered the book "not about the murder of man's body, but about the murder and rebirth of man's spirit." "Atlas Shrugged" has remained one of the most popular and influential books written in the twentieth century; one survey in 1991 finding it second only to the Bible in having the greatest impact upon its readers. The book would also place first on Modern Library Reader's Poll of the Top 100 novels of the 20th century. "...the reader will stay with this strange world, borne along by its story and eloquent flow of ideas." (Contemporary Newsweek Review). Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

IL DOTTOR ZIVAGO Traduzione dal russo di Pietro Zveteremich.

Milano, Feltrinelli, 1957. in-16 gr., cartonato edit., sovracoperta (lieviss. mancanze margin.), pp. 710,(2). Esemplare molto ben conservato.

COLLAGE IN AMERICA: December 18th thru [sic] January 4th, 1958 [Exhibition Poster]

New York: Zabriskie Gallery, [1957]. First Edition. Very good. 14" x 9.75" approx. posted printed recto only green on white. Folded twice, in quarters - likely as issued. A couple of clean tears at folds. Very good. Poster for the ground-breaking exhibition COLLAGE IN AMERICA, which included early work from Ray Johnson, Robert Rauschenberg, Allen Kaprow, and Jasper Johns -- only his third exhibition overall and predating his 1958 Castelli solo debut. COLLAGE featured what (according to Virginia Zabriski) "...may have been the first time Johns ever showed one of his flag pieces. I remember the price was $300 and nobody bought it, including me" (ZABRISKIE: Fifty Years p. 15). A prescient exhibition Zabriskie herself frequently mentioned as her favorite and one that helped distill many of the most important artistic developments of the coming 1960s: from Happenings and performance art (Kaprow & Beck) to mail art (Johnson) and pop (Johns & Rauschenberg). Other artists included in the show include: Arthur Dove, Alfred Leslie, Franz Kline, Vincent Longo, Lee Krasner, and Robert Motherwell, among many others. A striking promotional poster for a influential event. [See reproduction in ZABRISKIE: Fifty Years p. 87].

Jacket price-clipped with an overprice sticker, and very slightly rubbed at the ends and corners only, but an exceptional copy in excellent condition. First edition, first impression, scarce in such smart condition. The novel relates the publishing successes of a disturbingly unreflective and romantic young girl, based in part on late-Victorian novelist Marie Corelli. Matthew Walther observed (in a Spectator review of the recent reissue of Angel with an introduction by Hilary Mantel) how Angel, "convinced of her own genius. writes tawdry bestseller after tawdry bestseller and torments everyone around her. The book is not really a roman à clef so much as it is a kind of horrifying anti-memoir, Taylor's sounding of her own experience and dredging up her worst fears as a young female writer: mawkishness, philistinism, naïveté, stupidity, solipsism."         To Save a World

      - Signed drawing. Ink on board. Image measures 16 x 10" This image confronts the present with a future where science and technology have put Earth in peril. A large crowd of protesters gathered around a pontificating politician holds signs that read "Bring Down the Sats" and "Shake Off the Yoke of Science," presumably referring to the Space Race with the Soviet Union and the accompanying build-up of the American satellite program in the mid-1950s. Above the speaker, a fantastical break in the stormy skies shows a futuristic vision of Earth under attack by satellites, a fear put into the minds of Americans ever since the launch of Sputnik in 1957. A man in the immediate foreground, perhaps the drawing's protagonist, looks back from the speaker and off the page at an unseen but potentially even more alarming sight. The drawing is in good condition with overall toning. Some wear to lower right corner. Artist's notations in pen and pencil on verso. Paul Orban (1896-1974) was a Hungarian-born artist who got his start as a staff illustrator for the Chicago Sunday Tribune. After moving to New York, he found his calling in pulp magazines and illustrated novels and produced drawings for a wide range of popular print media. Orban is best known for his work in the science-fiction genre, and particularly with regards to space, which in the period of his career in the 1950s, was a salient topic in reality and fantasy alike. Late in life, he redirected his talents toward educational filmstrips and books, harnessing the emotional quality of his work to help children. This original drawing dates from the height of his career and exemplifies the Cold War anxieties of the Space Race.

From Russia, With Love (a James Bond novel).

London: Jonathan Cape, 1957.. First Impression, Binding A. Publisher's hardback binding in pictorial dust-jacket by Richard Chopping, correctly priced at 13/6. Book has no inscriptions, a couple of marks to edges. Jacket correctly priced at 13/6, benefitted from some light and accomplished restoration chiefly to an area of the spine which was worn (some impressions remain to cloth beneath). Shows well. An inexpensive and attractive copy of the first printing. This entry in the legendary James Bond series is an absolute classic; 007 does battle with SMERSH, the Soviet organisation of vengeance, interrogation, torture and death, and in particular their fearsome executioner Red Grant.
