Little Richard, Original, Vintage, 1957, Boxing-Style Concert Poster

1957. Little Richard Original Vintage 1957 Concert Poster, Thursday, August 8, [1957], Memorial Auditorium, Chattanooga [Tenn.], produced by Globe Posters of Baltimore with their imprint to the bottom margin. A striking, red and black boxing-style poster, 28.25" by 22", (71.8 cm. by 55.9 cm.), about near fine, on the original card stock, with a touch of soiling and age toning, short closed tears to margins and bottom left corner, with archival tape repair to verso. The poster is stored and will ship flat. The top billing for this all-star touring show belonged to Little Richard, who was riding high in 1957, with seven hit records on the charts, he had also starred in three movies, and in fact only Elvis Presley was enjoying similar success in these early days of rock ‘n’ roll. But this revue also included a formidable line- up of blues and r & b performers many of whom were influential rock ‘n’ roll pioneers. The great soul singer Bobby Bland was enjoying his first #1 hit, Farther Up The Road, in 1957, accompanied by his constant touring partner, Junior Parker, whose Mystery Train had been a hit for Sun Records and had been covered by Elvis in 1955 to even greater acclaim; while currently, Big Maybelle’s, Whole Lotta Shaking Goin’ On, which she first recorded in 1955, was a hit for Jerry Lee Lewis. The revue also included The Five Royales, featuring Lowman Pauling, whose combination of doo-wap, gospel and jump blues would be instrumental in shaping the 50’s soul sound; and the great bluesman Jimmy Reed, a pioneer of electric blues whose vocal style, and harmonica and guitar playing were major influences on several generations of rock musicians. A very scarce and historically significant early rock poster in collectible condition. J1760 . First Printing. About Near Fine.

        Meditations in an Emergency

NY: Grove Press, (1957). First edition of O'Hara's second and, arguably, best-known book. One of 75 copies, signed by O'Hara. Presentation copy, inscribed by O'Hara on front endpaper to Morris Golde: "For Morris, from one islander to another." The reference is to Fire Island, where Golde had a summer beach house, and where O'Hara composed "For James Dean," after learning of Dean's death in 1955. In an ironic twist of fate, it was at this same location where, in 1966, O'Hara was struck by a dune buggy and killed. A fine copy in green cloth, the spine of which is far less toned than is usually encountered, housed in publisher's slipcase, which shows light wear and toning.

Three Hundred Masterpieces of Chinese Painting in the Palace Museum

Taiching, Taiwan: National Palace Museum and National Central Museum,, 1957. Selected and Compiled by an Editorial Committee of the Joint Board of Directors of the National Palace Museum and the National Central Museum, Taichung, Taiwan. 6 volumes folio (440 × 315 mm). Bound Chinese-style, silk cord-tied golden brown brocade covered wraps, mounted silk title-panel with title in calligraphic style to the upper panels, silk paper liners, the volumes housed three each in two blue cloth folding portfolio- cases with bone toggle closures, paper labels to the upper panel. This set retaining the original corrugated card tray mailing-cases with paper labels to the lids, containing the original tissue wrapping. 300 plates, either collotype or tipped in colour plates, tissue-guards captioned in English and Mandarin. Mailing cases a little worn, cloth portfolios just a touch dusty and with very minor insect damage to the lining paper, the separate volumes in excellent state, a very good set indeed. First edition, limited to just 1500 sets. Publication was announced in Taiwan Today in August 1959; "Six folios of famous Chinese classical painting, printed by silk screen process on hand-made Japanese paper, have just been published by the Joint Board of Directors of the National Palace Museum and the National Central Museum of the Republic of China … the handsomely bound volumes contain the reproduction of paintings, many of them in exquisite colour, systematically selected from the old masters through a period of 1,100 years, beginning with Yen Li-pen (active 650 A.D.) down to Wang Yuan-ch'i (1642-1715 A.D.) The Joint Board was formed in 1949, when more than 3,800 crates of Chinese art treasures belonging to the National Palace Museum of Peiping and the National Central Museum of Nanking were moved to Taiwan with the government. The thousands of pieces in the collections were classified and catalogued, and properly stored in a warehouse adjoining a cave dug into the hill near Wu-feng, in central Taiwan. Since 1957, a display room was built with the assistance of the Asis Foundation, and the treasures were partly open to the public, the items on display being changed at regular intervals … However, the most significant achievement of the Joint Board so far is undoubtedly their successful completion of this publishing project, which may rank with the International Exhibition of Chinese Art held in London in 1935 as a major event in Chinese art history". An excellently preserved set of this superbly produced, uncommon, and highly desirable work.

Domestic Manners of the Americans [Association copy Signed by Sadleir]

London: Routledge, 1957. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing thus, of this report on American manners, the first edition with an introduction by famed bibliographer and man of letters Michael Sadleir (some pushing at the spine ends, tiny rubs at spine ends and board corners, foxing to the closed page block's edge, offsetting to the free endpapers), in a Very Good dust jacket (showing foxing and with an irregular leading edge to the front flap -- presumably a production flaw and a closed diagonal tear to the rear panel near the spine head and repaired by a piece of tape to the jacket's verso), SIGNED BY MICHAEL SADLEIR on the half-title and THERE PRESENTED TO HIS VALUED ASSISTANT MARTHA SMITH as follows: "for Martha Smith from / (on behalf of Frances Trollope) / Michael Sadleir." Anthony Trollope's father was a lawyer whose law practice suffered from the elder Trollope's habit of yelling at his Clients. Ultimately, the father took up farming, at which he also was a miserable failure. In 1827, Frances moved to America, living first in Fanny Wright's utopian community in Tennessee and, when that community failed, removing to Cincinnati, a frontier town at the time, to open a general store. As Frances Trollope had no experience in that line of work, the store was a miserable failure as well, adding to the family's financial stress. However, after her return to England, the indomitable Mrs. Trollope, having observed the cultural peculiarities of the Americans first-hand, wrote "Domestic Manners of the Americans" (1832), in which she presented a caustic view of the Americans, presenting them as uneducated and lacking in proper manners, and in which she described America's appalling middle-class egalitarianism. Acerbic and witty, the book was an instant sensation in England and brought her from the brink of financial ruin to prosperity and fame. Of course, the book was not well received in America and of it Mark Twain said "Mrs. Trollope was so handsomely cursed and reviled by this nation [for] telling the truth... she was painting a state of things which did not change at once. ... I remember it." Frances Trollope went on to further literary success and fame by authoring numerous well-received novels. Without doubt her experiences shaped her the careers of her two most literary sons, Thomas Adolphus Trollope, and the more famous Anthony Trollope. A Very Good copy, WITH A WONDERFUL PRESENTATION FROM MICHAEL SADLEIR TO MARTHA SMITH.
