        Piedra de Sol

Mexico: Tezontle [Fondo de Cultura Econ?a], 1957. Mexico: Tezontle [Fondo de Cultura Económica],, 1957. Octavo. Original pale buff wraps, printed in red and black. Housed in a black quarter leather on matching linen folding case, with title in single fillet gilt longitudinal panel to the spine. Two illustrations to the text. Wraps a little rubbed, and slightly rippled, light toning, else very good. First edition limited to 300 signed copies, this number 163. Original edition of the Mexican Nobel Prize winner's early masterpiece, the poem which represents the summation of his art at that point, the first clear expression of his uniquely Mexican voice, which has been variously described as "a high point of Mexican learned poetry"; "probably one of the best-known [poems] of Latin America in the second half of the 20th century" (Smith, Encyclopaedia of Latin American Literature); "a magnum opus of seismic dimensions with a lyrical exploration of eros, history, Meso-american/Hindu/and Greek symbols" (Hydra); and the poem "that definitively established Paz as a major international figure" (Sagetrieb). Composed as a single 584-line sentence, paralleling the 584-day synodic period of Venus as expressed on the Aztec stone calendars which give the piece its title, the last six lines loop back to the beginning suggesting a cyclical structure, but "this esoteric correlative design … does not circumscribe its subject. [It is] a lyrically discursive exploration of time and memory, of erotic love, or art and writing". Well represented institutionally, but no copy traced at auction.

New York: Random House, 1957. New York: Random House, 1957. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A first printing copy of Dr. Seuss' famous Christmas story. Book Near Fine with light wear at the spine ends and a previous owner's address label on the front end paper, otherwise unmarked and very attractive. First issue dust jacket retains original price code of 250/250, has 14 titles on rear flap and advertises "The Cat in the Hat" at $2.00 on the rear panel. Jacket also Near Fine with the spine lightly faded and a little worn at the extremities and with a faint ring from a glass on the front panel. A much nicer example than typically encountered. & & Named one of the Top 100 Picture Books of all time by "School Library Journal," it';s the time-honored story of discovering the true joy of Christmas. Considered one of his best, Dr. Seuss wrote the book in 1957 and managed to complete in it in only a few weeks, with his wife acting as editor. The book would be adapted into a fondly remembered television special in 1966 and a feature film in 2000. "His peculiar and original genius in line and word is always the same, yet, so rich are the variations he plays on his themes, always fresh and amusing." (Contemporary New York Herald Tribune Review). Near Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket.

The King Ranch. Research Holland McCombs. Annotations Francis L. Fugate

Kingsville, Texas: Printed for the King Ranch, 1957. Kingsville, Texas: Printed for the King Ranch, 1957. Small 4to. Map and Drawings by the Author. Typography by Carl Hertzog of El Paso, chapter titles by the author. [xii], [469]- 838, [4] pp. Original bound in a facsimile of the saddle blankets woven and used on the King Ranch cloth by Universal of San Antonio. Fine. Herd 1318; Jenkins "Basic Texas Books" 121, "The best account of the most famous ranch in the world. " Reese Six-Score 69 . "This book was designed, printed and bound in Texas by photo-offset process, plates and presswork by Guynes Printing Company. Binding by Universal of San Antonio." Basic Texas Books 121A: "This is the best account of the most famous ranch in the world." Campbell, My Favorite 101 Books about the Cattle Industry 56. CBC 2785 (plus 3 additional entries). Adams, Herd 1319. Dykes, Collecting Range Life Literature, p. 16; Fifty Great Western Illustrators (Lea 65); Western High Spots, p. 79 ("A Range Man's Library"): "Belongs in any range man's library"; p. 102 ("The Texas Ranch Today"). Hinshaw & Lovelace, Lea 114. King, Women on the Cattle Trail and in the Roundup, p. 17: "This ranch history includes substantial information about Henrietta King." Lowman, Printer at the Pass 99n: "This book was originally planned as a 250-300 page private edition to be published on the occasion of the ranch centennial in 1953, but it grew steadily for the next four years.... The project grew from a modest private edition to a two-volume, 838-page trade book. The physical dimensions of the books itself, the 16-point Centaur type of the text, the ample page margins, and the expansive chapter head designs all suggest the vastness of the ranch. Typesetting was inspected page by page to insure that bad spacing and bad breaks were avoided. An original color technique was developed for color separation in the four, five, and seven-color illustrations.... The special edition was printed on all rag paper made especially for this book by the Curtis Paper Company. It is bound in heavy crush linen resembling the King Ranch saddle blanket with the running 'W' brand"; Printing Arts in Texas, p. 54: "Tom Lea's history of the King Ranch is one of the most important books ever to emerge from a Texas background. Its typographical achievement is equally distinguished." Reese, Six Score 69: "Perhaps the most exhaustive ranch history ever written, and a tremendous account of the cattle industry of south Texas." In 1885 Henrietta King inherited the debt-ridden ranch 500,000-acre ranch from her visionary but impractical husband. She ran the ranch until her death in 1925, developing important and early scientific techniques for beef production. The Santa Gertrudis breed, for which the King Ranch is now renowned, started under her direction. At her death, the ranch had grown to well over a million acres and she had cleared all debts, leaving an estate of over $5 million

Tall, thick 8vo's: [10],467,[3]; [10],469-838,[4]pp, illustrated with numerous plates, vignettes, facsimiles of documents, and maps (many in color, printed with special inks) after drawings by Tom Lea. Very Fine and apparently unread, both volumes and slipcase virtually pristine. Adams Herd 1318. Basic Texas Books 121. Reese Six-score 69. & ¶ The sought-after Saddle Blanket Edition (never intended for sale, but only as presentation copies) of Tom Lea's voluminous account of the most famous of Texas ranches. Jenkins notes that this is the "best account," while William Reese calls it "perhaps the most exhaustive ranch history ever written." Frank Goodwyn adds that "in addition to being an encyclopedic compendium of information on the ranch, the book is also a work of art." The King Ranch, located in south Texas between Corpus Christi and Brownsville, is one of the largest ranches in the world. (The world's largest is the 6,000,000-acre Anna Creek station in Australia, and the largest contiguous U.S. ranch is the Waggoner Ranch near Vernon, Texas.) The King Ranch comprises 825,000 acres and was founded in 1853 by Captain Richard King and Gideon K. Lewis. It comprises portions of six Texas counties, in four largely discontinuous sections called divisions. (Only the first two divisions border each other, and that border is relatively short.) The ranch was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1961. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition.         The 8 million dollar girl Marlowe is going to be married to" - Superb original picture postcard written and sent by Chandler from Palms Springs to his publisher Hamish Hamilton in London

Palm Springs: No Publisher 1957 - Superb original picture postcard written and sent by Chandler from Palms Springs to his publisher Hamish Hamilton in London. Postmarked Palm Springs: 24th December 1957. A "Giant Post Card" with "Greetings from Palm Springs" printed on the front over a picture of Palm Springs Plaza sent by Chandler to his publisher in London. In fine condition apart from some slight creasing and two punch holes, only affecting the letters "ut" in "but" and the first "l" in "alcoholic" in the second last line. This gem is as good as it gets: Address ("Hamish Hamilton, Esq., / 90(50?) Great Russell St., / London, W.C. 1, / England.") and text written entirely in Chandler's hand. The text reads as follows: "Dear Jamie: Here are so few of these oversized nonsenses that I may have sent you this one before. But don't kick me, I'm old and weak. Thanks for letter which I shall answer very soon. Went to a party last night at a home which is the ideal setting for the 8 million dollar girl Marlowe is going to be married to in my next after the one I am finishing up. They'll have a hell of a time squabbling. The party was elaborate but the same old thing. Elaborate catering and decorations, but the same loud empty alcoholic voices. Love to all. Ray." Note that "Jamie" is how friends called Hamish (Hamilton). At the time and as mentioned in the text, Chandler was putting the finishing touches on his novel Playback, which ends with Linda Loring ("the 8 million dollar girl" of The Long Good-Bye fame) calling Marlowe and asking him to marry her. This is the first time Chandler mentions marriage and the setting for the beginning of his last novel The Poodle Springs Story. This is the only time we have ever seen Marlowe's name in Chandler's handwriting. Also, we know of no other text of this length and content entirely in Chandler's hand.
