Promotional Booklet for Jamie and Mardi-Gras Records. Circa 1960

[No place]. Near Fine. Bradbound printed wrappers. 12.5" x 12.5". Light wear on the wrappers, very good or better; internally fine. Contains 27 inserts that consist of high gloss album cover art and the sleeve art for a few 7" records for music produced by Jamie Records and their "bargain" label Mardi-Gras Records (the cover lists several other small independent companies including Gone Records, Gone Latin, Goldisc, and End Records, most of which were owned or founded by George Goldner between 1957-1962). The first four inserts in the book are for the Duane Eddy album "Have Twangy Guitar Will Travel" and the sleeve art for three 7" records by Eddy, "Detour" (both mono and stereo) and "Yep!" Aside for one more Eddy album, and a few "easy listening" albums, almost all - certainly way more than half - consists of the art for Latin music, almost always identified in the title as "cha cha cha" music, including Joe Cuba and Orchestra, Sonny Rossi and the Concord Hotel Orchestra, La Playa Sextet, Al Castellanos, Johnny Conquet and Orchestra, and Emilio Reyes. Certainly rare, and probably unique documentation and an interesting evocation of Latin music in the early 1960s.

Letter from a Master Addict to Dangerous Drugs

(N.-pl.): The British Journal of Addiction, [1957]. First Edition. Trade Paperback Trade Paperback. Fine. Pp. 119-131 (plus a final blank page). Stapled sheets. A letterpress off-print from the British Journal of Addiction, vol. 53, no. 2. Burrough's second separate publication, one of the most widely cited first-hand accounts of drug use. In this letter, written in response to a request from a physician, Burroughs describes the effects of opiates of all sorts, cocaine, marijuana, benzedrene, peyote, Yage, nutmeg, and scopolomine. He also describes various methods used by addicts to break the opiate habit. One of the scarcest and most desireable Burroughs items, often reported to have had a print run of 50 copies, although your humble cataloguer could find no factual basis for this claim. First edition. Stapled very slightly rusted, else fine.

        The Sound of Waves

Secker & Warburg, London., 1957. First U.K. edition. Translated by Meredith Weatherby. Octavo. pp [iv], 183. Inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author to Angus Wilson: "To Angus with the author's best wishes Yukio - 23 March 1965". Mishima was a friend of Wilson and stayed at his Suffolk cottage on one of his visits to England. In the bottom margin of the last page is a public library sale stamp which presumably indicates how Wilson came to own the book in the first place. The inscription was no doubt made at the time of the Suffolk visit.Several page corners turned down. Stain to top edge. Very good in good, nicked and slightly rubbed dustwrapper a bit faded at the spine and with a fingernail-size chip at top of front panel.

        On Poetry and Poets

London: Faber and Faber, 1957. 8vo. [8], 262 pp. Original blue cloth; printed dust jacket. Closed tear at top of front panel, some light chipping at ends of spine panel. FIRST EDITION. A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY, WITH A REVEALING LETTER BY ELIOT. Louis Untermeyer's copy, with newspaper clippings neatly pinned and laid-in at front and with a TLS from Eliot mounted on the pastedown, 16 August 1961. Eliot replies to the author-editor's request for a submission of a 6-10 page typescript, with an advance of $1,000, intended for children. "I am afraid I cannot run to that length for a script intended for children of 6 to 8. Nor do I believe I could or should try to compose a children's story limited to a vocabulary of 250 words laid down in advance. I have only written verse for children, and I have always maintainted the view, judging from the children of my acquaintance, is correct, that children like long and euphonious words, without understanding them. Indeed, for me as a child, and I am sure for any intelligent child who likes reading the new and unknown words are part of the fun. They may even be words that the child would not use until it is grown up. So I am afraid I cannot be one of your distinguished contributors." Untermeyer and his wife Bryna Ivens Untermeyer created a number of books for young people in the series Golden Treasury of Children's Literature. He edited for the Crowell-Collier Press the Modern Masters for Children Series in the 1960s. It is most likely for this that he solicited a submission from Eliot. Eliot's most famous work for children was 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats' [1939]. Gallup A69.

        On The Road

New York: The Viking Press, 1957. First edition of Kerouac's classic novel. Octavo, original black cloth. Fine in an excellent dust jacket with light rubbing and wear. Jacket design by Bill English. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The raucous, exuberant, often wildly funny account of a journey through America and Mexico, Jack Kerouac's On the Road instantly defined a generation on its publication in 1957: it was, in the words of a New York Times reviewer, "the clearest and most important utterance yet made by the generation Kerouac himself named years ago as 'beat.'" Written in the mode of ecstatic improvisation that Allen Ginsberg described as "spontaneous bop prosody," Kerouac's novel remains electrifying in its thirst for experience and its defiant rebuke of American conformity. In his portrayal of the fervent relationship between the writer Sal Paradise and his outrageous, exasperating, and inimitable friend Dean Moriarty, Kerouac created one of the great friendships in American literature; and his rendering of the cities and highways and wildernesses that his characters restlessly explore are a hallucinatory travelogue of a nation he both mourns and celebrates. "On the Road has become a classic of the Beat Movement with its stream-of-consciousness depiction of the rejection of mainstream American values set in a physical and metaphysical journey across America" (Book in America, 136). It is the basis for the 2012 film featuring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kristen Stewart, Alice Braga, Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge, Danny Morgan, Elisabeth Moss, Kirsten Dunst, and Viggo Mortensen. The executive producers were Francis Ford Coppola, Patrick Batteux, Jerry Leider, and Tessa Ross.

"Synthesis of the Elements in Stars"

First edition in the original wrappers of this key work of 20th-century cosmology which showed that most of the elements that make up the universe are formed by nuclear reactions in the interiors of stars. This copy with the ownership signature of Stanford University high-energy physicist Herbert Conrad de Staebler on the cover. Margaret Burbidge was a pioneering astronomer whose did important work on quasars and distant galaxies; the masses and rotation of galaxies (supervising Vera Rubin in this subject early in her career); and instrumentation for the Hubble Space Telescope. She was the first woman to serve as Director of the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, though the customary honorary title of Astronomer Royal was denied to her. This magisterial, 100-page paper has been described as "one of the most authoritative and comprehensive works of modern science" (Oxford Dictionary of Scientists, p. 268). It explains in detail how heavier elements like carbon and iron are produced in stars from lighter ones such as hydrogen and helium; posits the chemical evolution of the universe from the activity of stars; and provides observational evidence from stellar spectral line emulsions. It is now taken for granted by the general public, as well as by scientists, that the universe as we know it exists thanks to the synthesis of elements in the early stars. As Carl Sagan famously put it, "We are all star stuff". A beautiful copy of this important work. ...in Reviews of Modern Physics volume 29, number 4. Lancaster PA & New York: American Physical Society, October 1957. Quarto. Original orange wrappers printed in black. Ownership signature "De Staebler" to the upper wrapper. Professionally rebacked to style. Minor bump to head of spine, minor creasing to the lower corner, spine and adjacent edges of wrappers faded, wrappers and contents overall fresh. An excellent copy.

        From Russia, With Love.

Jonathan Cape, London 1957 - First edition of the fifth novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Octavo, original cloth. An excellent example in a very good dust jacket with light rubbing to the extremities. Signed by Sean Connery on the title page, who played James Bond in the film. Jacket design by Richard Chopping. "Described in the Times Literary Supplement as ‘most brilliant,’ the book was a great commercial success and helped to launch Fleming as a best-selling novelist It ended with Bond seriously wounded and nearly killed by fugu poison from the sex organs of the Japanese globe-fish While the ending was not quite Sherlock Holmes and his apparently fatal last struggle with evil at the Reichenbach Falls, Fleming had provided himself with an opportunity to remove his hero. He was not, however, to take it. There was public agitation when 007 was reported dead. Bond was irreplaceable" (Black, 27, 30). "This is a very highly sought after title, as it is generally considered the best novel in the series and the best of the movies, as well" (Biondi & Pickard, 44). Made into the 1964 film of the same title with Sean Connery as Bond and Lotte Lenya as ex-KGB agent Rosa Klebb. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Angel.

London: Peter Davies,, 1957. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine silver. With the dust jacket. Some faint marks to cloth, light spotting to edges and a strip of tanning to endpapers, a very good copy in the jacket rubbed at the extremities with small chips to the ends and corners and with a faint ring to front panel. First edition, first impression. The novel relates the publishing successes of a disturbingly unreflective and romantic young girl, based in part on late-Victorian novelist Marie Corelli. Matthew Walther observed (in a Spectator review of the recent reissue of Angel with an introduction by Hilary Mantel) how Angel, "convinced of her own genius... writes tawdry bestseller after tawdry bestseller and torments everyone around her... The book is not really a roman à clef so much as it is a kind of horrifying anti-memoir, Taylor's sounding of her own experience and dredging up her worst fears as a young female writer: mawkishness, philistinism, naïveté, stupidity, solipsism.

        Atlas Shrugged

New York: Random House(1957). 1st edition/1st printing, Random House, 1957. NF+/NF+. Stated First Printing with all the correct points met for book and dustjacket. A lovely copy of this bulky book and fragile dustjacket. The Near Fine+ book (really close to Fine) is clean, straight and tightly bound with no soiling and no previous owner marks or names, the binding gilt on the front panel and spine is bright, unscratched and unfaded, binding edges and corners are unworn, and the dark green upper page edges are unfaded and rich in color. The only faults I can see is the usual tiny bit of faint smuding to the extreme outer corners of the bottom page edges from the weight of the book causing them to touch shelving at some point in its life, and an extremely tiny (less than sharpened pencil point sized) ink mark also on the lower page edges. The Near Fine+ price intact dustjacket has the correct '10/57' on the bottom of the front flap, the publisher's name/address on the bottom of the back flap, and the striking colors and design of this famous Salter-designed dustjacket are bright and unfaded. There has been a very small amount of extremely well done professional paper conservationist work that's hard to even see in little areas of the edges near the spine folds and a couple of the flap fold ends, there's just a touch of surface rubbing to the back panel, a mere hint of edge wear to a small portion of the lower back panel edge, and a couple of tiny very slightly toned spots in the white area of the back panel. Beautiful book and dustjacket that presents very near perfectly. This one needs no content synopsis - the author's opus, probably the all-time best selling fiction book with, it seems, never-ending relevance for good or bad as to what's happening in our world well over half a century after the book was published.; 8-11/16" x 6"; 1168 pages, 20, NF/NF, LOC: 5710033

An excellent copy in a nicked dust jacket, with a little loss to spine ends, tape repairs to verso. First edition, first impression.         From Russia, With Love (a James Bond novel)

London: Jonathan Cape, 1957.. First Impression, Binding A. Publisher's hardback binding in pictorial dust-jacket by Richard Chopping, correctly priced at 13/6. No inscriptions; edges a little dusty, jacket worn with some chips and nicks, browned to extremities. A very good, used copy. This entry in the legendary James Bond series is an absolute classic; 007 does battle with SMERSH, the Soviet organisation of vengeance, interrogation, torture and death, and in particular their fearsome executioner Red Grant.

AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT POEM SIGNED: "A Nearly Next to Naught Song"

[@1957] - Fair copy AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT of a complete poem of 29 lines titled "A Nearly Next to Naught Song," completely in Frost's hand and SIGNED by him at the conclusion with the dedication "For Richard Hocking/once the author's pupil for/a lesson or two at Shady Hill/or rather on the porch on/Irving Street" on a 6-1/8" x 7-3/4" piece of paper. In the upper right corner in pencil Hocking has written "1957." The text is the poem published as "A Never Naught Song" in the 1962 volume IN THE CLEARING. In this version Frost has eliminated two lines--"Out of coming-in/Into having been!"--and made various other changes in words and punctuation. The Houghton Library at Harvard has a Frost notebook, undated, containing this poem titled as "A Next to Nearly Naught Song." It is one of two poems by Frost along with "All Revelations" (1938) concerned with descriptions of the quantum nature of atoms. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
