        Coup de Grâce

New York: Farrar, Strauss and Cudahy, 1957. 1st American edition. A contemporary, signed, inscription from Yourcenar, fills the front free endpaper with a long quotation. Fine in fine dustjacket. Marguerite Yourcenar is under appreciated but will ambush you like identity theft. In Coup de Grâce a Prussian officer murders the woman who loves him because he loves her brother, in line with the central figures throughout her fiction, men torn between their passions and society's demands, during key moments of history. After WW II, she lived in France and the U. S. with her partner, Grace Frick, who translated this book into English. In 1950 they moved to Maine, and in 1980 (go Margot) Yourcenar became the first woman elected to the Academie Française (all customs were once eccentricities), that elitist society, created by Cardinal Richelieu in 1634 (the very Richelieu from The Three Musketeers), limited to 40 constituents entrusted with guarding French culture and to which admission is only upon the death of a sitting member (you can write your own joke here)_______________. Fine / fine.

        On the Road.

New York: Viking Press,, 1957. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine and front cover in white, top edge red. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom blue morocco-backed black cloth folding-case. Minor wear at extremities; an excellent copy in the jacket with slight creasing to extremities and small chip to head of rear panel. First edition, first printing. A highly important presentation copy, inscribed by the author to John Montgomery with a drawing by Kerouac of the ghost of the Susquehanna, relating to both On the Road and The Dharma Bums. Montgomery was a Berkeley librarian who, according to Gerald Nocosial, "fascinated Jack with his scholarly non sequiturs." In October 1955, the poet Gary Snyder and Montgomery fitted Kerouac up with hiking gear and the three of them hiked up the 12,000-foot ridge of Matterhorn Mountain in Yosemite. This episode was to be transformed by Kerouac in to a key event in his celebrated novel, The Dharma Bums. In the novel, Montgomery is depicted as Henry Morley and Snyder, Japhy Ryder. Kerouac described the three men's expedition as "all completely serious, all completely hallucinated, all completely happy". Kerouac's evocative drawing depicts the Ghost of the Susquehanna, described in chapter 14 of part one of On the Road. "It was the night of the Ghost of the Susquehanna. The Ghost was a shrivelled little old man with a paper satchel who claimed he was headed for 'Canady.' He walked very fast, commanding me to follow, and said there was a bridge up ahead we could cross... as far as I could see he was just a semi-respectable walking hobo of some kind who had covered the entire Eastern Wilderness on foot... We were bums together. We walked seven miles along the mournful Susquehanna. It is a terrifying river. It has bushy cliffs on both sides that lean like hairy ghosts over the unknown waters. Inky night covers all... I thought all the wilderness of America was in the West till the Ghost of the Susquehanna showed me different..." While the Ghost undoubtedly has its origins in a hobo Kerouac encountered in western Pennsylvania, the vision is also inspired by a recurring nightmare, which Kerouac related to Allen Ginsburg and others in the late 1940s. He dreamed repeatedly of being pursued by a "Hooded Wayfarer without a Name." Kerouac came to believe that the hooded figure was merely his own self wearing a shroud. The first draft of On the Road to contain a scene approximating his dreams of the shrouded stranger was produced in 1951. Provenance: John McVey Montgomery (1919–1992); sold by him c.1988 via a Californian book dealer to Ken Lopez and Tom Congalton; subsequently in the noted Kerouac collection of Airick Kredell (1950–2004); sold in 2004 by Skyline Books to a private collector in London.

Cape: London, 1957. First printing. Black boards. Page edges very lightly yellowed, with light mottling to top page edges, tidy ink owner name on front free endpaper; else fine, corners sharp. The dust jacket spine is a bit yellowed, with a bit of rubbing to the folds and tiny nicks and chips to corners; yellowing to front flap fold; small tear to upper inner corner of front panel; rear panel is yellowed and rippled from damp, including a tide mark in bottom margin; in all VG minus, flap price (13s6d) intact. As there are no damp marks on the rear cover of the book, I feel sure this jacket was supplied from another copy. The fifth James Bond novel, the one in which he battles SMERSH. Basis of the 1964 film classic starring Sean Connery, Robert Shaw, and Lotte Leyna. Considered by many to be the best of Bond, movie and book. Also, the first of the Chopping dust jackets. An interesting footnote: the actual first printing sheets were found unsatisfactory by Cape, who sold them all to Foyle's Book Club. Thus, this Cape first was actually made from second printing sheets. But no matter, it is this edition everyone wants. Binding: Hardcover.

        Golda Meir

      c. 1957-1965. Exceedingly rare Autograph Letter Signed <i>"<b>Golda</b>"</i> as Israeli Foreign Minister, on her 3.75" x 2" business card imprinted in Hebrew <i>"Golda Meir/Foreign Minister."</i> In Hebrew, translated. To Baruch (Zuckerman). In full <i>"<b>Dear Baruch, I am very sorry that I will not be able to attend your birthday, along with your whole family. A thrombosis in my leg has put me in the hospital. Had I come I would have asked for permission to say what is in my heart. I will wait for another opportunity and for now I will only send you my best wishes and many returns. I send my love to you, Nina and the girls.</b>"</i> <br><br>As Golda Meir served as Israeli Foreign Minister from July 1956 to January 1966 and Baruch Zuckerman's birthday was June 26th, this letter must have been written between 1957 and 1965. When she announced her retirement as Foreign Minister, Meir cited her health problems as part of the reason, so the letter, penned from her hospital bed, was most probably written in the early 1960s. It is in fine condition with an indiscernible mid-vertical fold. <br><br>Autograph Letters Signed of Golda Meir are virtually unobtainable. In the last 27 years, while Meir Typed Letters Signed have appeared at major auction houses from time to time, not one ALS has ever been offered for sale. This one, written to an early Zionist leader, is one of exceptional Israeli historical association.<br><br>Baruch Zuckerman (1887-1970) emigrated from Poland to the United States in 1904 and, inspired by Herzl, founded the Poale Zion Publishing Association in New York which published the works of leading Zionists who sought to establish a Jewish homeland in Palestine. Poale Zion (Hebrew for Workers of Zion) was a movement of Marxist Zionist workers circles founded in various Russian cities around 1900 and in New York City in 1903. He was executive director of the People's Relief Committee from 1915 to 1924 when it disbanded, and accompanied Herbert Hoover and investment banker Herbert Lehman to Poland to bring food and clothing to those in need. <br><br>After World War I, Poale Zion in Palestine was merged by David Ben-Gurion into the Achdut Ha'avoda party which eventually became Mapai of which Golda Meir was a member and later secretary-general. Zuckerman, leader of the American Poale Zion, was one of the founders and officers of the American Jewish Congress and president of the Labor Zionist Organization of America which Meir joined in 1915. After Nina and Baruch Zuckerman and their daughters moved to Jerusalem in 1932, their house became a meeting place for the leaders of the Zionist Movement. Golda Meir had to go back to America with her two children because her daughter Sara had kidney trouble for which suitable treatment was not available in Palestine. Her husband Morris Meyerson, who stayed behind, moved in with the Zuckermans. "Everyone thought Morris Meyerson was our father because our father was never home," recalls Baruch's younger daughter Nomi. In 1937, Nomi Zuckerman graduated high school and went to study at a teacher's seminary in Tel Aviv. Golda Meir had already returned so Nomi moved in with Golda's family and helped to run the household, "although," recalled Nomi, "Golda baked the Shabbat cake." While his wife and daughters remained in Palestine, Baruch Zuckerman's many activities as an emissary precluded him from residing in Israel until his retirement in 1956. <br><br>

Promotional Booklet for Jamie and Mardi-Gras Records. Circa 1960

[No place]. Near Fine. Bradbound printed wrappers. 12.5" x 12.5". Light wear on the wrappers, very good or better; internally fine. Contains 27 inserts that consist of high gloss album cover art and the sleeve art for a few 7" records for music produced by Jamie Records and their "bargain" label Mardi-Gras Records (the cover lists several other small independent companies including Gone Records, Gone Latin, Goldisc, and End Records, most of which were owned or founded by George Goldner between 1957-1962). The first four inserts in the book are for the Duane Eddy album "Have Twangy Guitar Will Travel" and the sleeve art for three 7" records by Eddy, "Detour" (both mono and stereo) and "Yep!" Aside for one more Eddy album, and a few "easy listening" albums, almost all - certainly way more than half - consists of the art for Latin music, almost always identified in the title as "cha cha cha" music, including Joe Cuba and Orchestra, Sonny Rossi and the Concord Hotel Orchestra, La Playa Sextet, Al Castellanos, Johnny Conquet and Orchestra, and Emilio Reyes. Certainly rare, and probably unique documentation and an interesting evocation of Latin music in the early 1960s.

A letterpress off-print from the British Journal of Addiction, vol. 53, no. 2. Burrough's second separate publication, one of the most widely cited first-hand accounts of drug use. In this letter, written in response to a request from a physician, Burroughs describes the effects of opiates of all sorts, cocaine, marijuana, benzedrene, peyote, Yage, nutmeg, and scopolomine. He also describes various methods used by addicts to break the opiate habit. One of the scarcest and most desireable Burroughs items, often reported to have had a print run of 50 copies, although your humble cataloguer could find no factual basis for this claim. Mishima was a friend of Wilson and stayed at his Suffolk cottage on one of his visits to England. In the bottom margin of the last page is a public library sale stamp which presumably indicates how Wilson came to own the book in the first place.         On Poetry and Poets

London: Faber and Faber, 1957. 8vo. [8], 262 pp. Original blue cloth; printed dust jacket. Closed tear at top of front panel, some light chipping at ends of spine panel. FIRST EDITION. A FINE ASSOCIATION COPY, WITH A REVEALING LETTER BY ELIOT. Louis Untermeyer's copy, with newspaper clippings neatly pinned and laid-in at front and with a TLS from Eliot mounted on the pastedown, 16 August 1961. Eliot replies to the author-editor's request for a submission of a 6-10 page typescript, with an advance of $1,000, intended for children. "I am afraid I cannot run to that length for a script intended for children of 6 to 8. Nor do I believe I could or should try to compose a children's story limited to a vocabulary of 250 words laid down in advance. I have only written verse for children, and I have always maintainted the view, judging from the children of my acquaintance, is correct, that children like long and euphonious words, without understanding them. Indeed, for me as a child, and I am sure for any intelligent child who likes reading the new and unknown words are part of the fun. They may even be words that the child would not use until it is grown up. So I am afraid I cannot be one of your distinguished contributors." Untermeyer and his wife Bryna Ivens Untermeyer created a number of books for young people in the series Golden Treasury of Children's Literature. He edited for the Crowell-Collier Press the Modern Masters for Children Series in the 1960s. It is most likely for this that he solicited a submission from Eliot. Eliot's most famous work for children was 'Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats' [1939]. Gallup A69.

Random House, NY 1957 - 61 pages bound in one signature. Contents very clean without any names nor marks. There are no creases or tears or soil to any of the pages. The hinges are film with no sign of cracks The matte paper over boards cover is sharp, bright, clean & square. The tips are gently rubbed; slight rubbing to top & bottom of spine. The spine has a couple of dings to the paper & a few tiny dings to the spine's edge. The scarce book is in exceptional condition, a conservative VG+, well above other copies I've seen available. The very uncommon first issue dustjacket has the $2.00 price (unclipped) and is very bright, clean, sharp, without tears. Corners gently rubbed. Top & bottom of spine has slight creasing covering 1/2" to 1 inch. Its unfortunate defect is a jagged piece of paper measuring 3 1/2" by 1/3" that is missing along the spine. It has taken out the "Dr. Seuss" and the "RAN" (in Random House). There is a tiny piece that obscures the "T" in "Hat". A professional paper conservator could reproduce the missing piece and marry it to the rest of the jacket. If not for the missing piece of spine paper, the jacket is very bright, VG+. The photo scans of the jacket are taken without the mylar cover. With the Brodart, the jacket looks even better. Please "Ask Bookseller" if this is available before ordering. Size: 8vo [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        On The Road

New York: The Viking Press, 1957. First edition of Kerouac's classic novel. Octavo, original black cloth. Fine in an excellent dust jacket with light rubbing and wear. Jacket design by Bill English. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The raucous, exuberant, often wildly funny account of a journey through America and Mexico, Jack Kerouac's On the Road instantly defined a generation on its publication in 1957: it was, in the words of a New York Times reviewer, "the clearest and most important utterance yet made by the generation Kerouac himself named years ago as 'beat.'" Written in the mode of ecstatic improvisation that Allen Ginsberg described as "spontaneous bop prosody," Kerouac's novel remains electrifying in its thirst for experience and its defiant rebuke of American conformity. In his portrayal of the fervent relationship between the writer Sal Paradise and his outrageous, exasperating, and inimitable friend Dean Moriarty, Kerouac created one of the great friendships in American literature; and his rendering of the cities and highways and wildernesses that his characters restlessly explore are a hallucinatory travelogue of a nation he both mourns and celebrates. "On the Road has become a classic of the Beat Movement with its stream-of-consciousness depiction of the rejection of mainstream American values set in a physical and metaphysical journey across America" (Book in America, 136). It is the basis for the 2012 film featuring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kristen Stewart, Alice Braga, Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge, Danny Morgan, Elisabeth Moss, Kirsten Dunst, and Viggo Mortensen. The executive producers were Francis Ford Coppola, Patrick Batteux, Jerry Leider, and Tessa Ross.
