n.p. (NY), n.p. (Viking Press), n.d. (April 1957 - n.p. (NY), n.p. (Viking Press), n.d. (April 1957), first edition, spiral-bound wrappers. Softcover. No. 4 of an unknown number of Author Presentation Proofs, this copy Inscribed to legendary bookseller John Scopazzi ("Dear John Scopazzi: Before you call the wagon, I can explain everything. This book sneaked up on me. Nobody can be more surprised than I was when it dribbled out on paper. I think it was imps. Yours, John Steinbeck"), and no one was more surprised than his editors and publisher when this book became a book-of-the-month selection as it is generally considered the least of all his published works, these unrevised galley proofs were printed on rectos only, two publisher labels are affixed to front cover, the first is numbered as #4 and includes publication information (with March crossed out under publication date with April written in), below it is another label with three paragraphs about the book (the $2.95 price has been marked out with $3 substituted), the proof has none of the preliminaries set in type nor any of the William Penn DuBois illustrations, not recorded by Goldstone & Payne, Morrow 240, now housed in a custom folding case.         Hitchcock (First French Edition, Signed by Alfred Hitchcock)

Editions Universitaires, Paris 1957 - First French Edition. True first edition, preceding the American by nearly 20 years. INSCRIBED by Alfred Hitchcock on the half-title page ("To Peter, Alfred Hitchcock") followed by a large drawing of his well-known self-caricature. Eric Rohmer and Claude Chabrol wrote this book near the beginning of their respective careers, and would both go on to become highly individual and respected filmmakers in their own right. A classic study of Hitchcock's early-to-mid career films, one of the most important books on cinema printed in the twentieth century. A wonderful section of high-resolution stills from the Hitchcock films discussed ends the book, the last being the famous photo of Hitchcock crossing at the top of a steep stone stairway, from "I Confess." Very Good plus in photo illustrated wrappers, with a small tear at one corner of the crown. The only copy signed by Hitchcock we have ever encountered.       Yale University Press, New Haven 1957 - Poet's very scarce first book, part of the Yale Series of Younger Poets, with an introduction by W. H. Auden. This copy belonged to Wright's wife, Liberty, with her SIGNATURE at the top of the front free endpaper and below that a SIGNED INSCRIPTION by the poet quoting two lines from a poem in the book, "Eleutheria," and adding a bittersweet, revealing commentary: "for Lib,/and the ground's deliberate/riches, the fallen pears, the/bewildered apples blown to/mounds of shade, and mainly/for the poison ivy, which I kept/out of the poem, not because/it didn't scan or rhyme, but/because it was the sweet/and secret root from which/the poem came./Love and grief,/Jim." Liberty Kardules was Wright's high school sweetheart and the mother of his sons Franz and Marshall. Wright left Liberty two years after publication of this book and divorced her in 1962. Franz Wright is now an accomplished poet. He and his father are the only parent/child pair to have won a Pulitzer Prize in the same category. Near Fine in a Good dustwrapper, worn but complete but for small chips at the spine tips and corners and a long closed split between the front panel and inside flap.         Seventy Original Fashion Drawings

[circa 1957?]. Original artwork. Measuring approximately 7" x 10". Goauche on stiff paper. Fine. A collection of 70 full-color drawings of women's summer apparel and swim wear from an unknown 1950s fashion designer likely used for either reference during production or for use in a fashion catalog. The majority of the images consist of the sketched outlines of women with their garments painted in gauche; most in great detail with stripes, fabric textures, and the popular step-and-repeat motifs of the times, such as sail boats, flowers, fish, etc. The clothing styles and one particular design featuring flags suggest a European fashion house, possibly in Austria or Monaco. A number of the drawings include background details, some in color, and one example is fully painted. Of additional note are an illustration of a woman modeling an early bikini and another showing a man in a two-piece swimsuit. All the paintings are skillfully done, though a slight variation in style suggests they may have been created by more than one artist. A beautiful collection of original, full-color fashion illustrations from mid-20th Century Europe. .

        My Baseball Diary

New York: A.S. Barnes. (1957). First. First edition. Early gift inscription dated in 1959, boards a bit soiled, a very good only copy in a price-clipped, good or better dustwrapper with small chips and tears. Engaging reminiscences of the game by the creator of Studs Lonigan. This copy is Inscribed at a later date to Joe DiMaggio: "To Joe DiMaggio with kind regards. James T. Farrell. Aug. 17, 1978 N.Y." DiMaggio, who is mentioned in the text, as any book about baseball from this era would, must have been forced to seek out a used copy to have it signed, and this copy has an old bookseller's price in it. Several of the books from DiMaggio's library had receipts from his hometown used bookstore, Moe's, in San Francisco. With a letter of provenance signed by DiMaggio's two granddaughters. Cleckley to his first wife Louise Martin Cleckley: "12 Jan 1957 For: Louise" and unsigned. He has however made 12 pencil notations in the text. The long printed dedication reads: "To Louise Martin Cleckley / Who was often called into service as psychiatrist to both of us through the bewildering years while we were treating this patient. Often the effort of two men seemed not quite adequate to deal with the three faces of this problem. For the contribution of a woman's understanding to our work and for true collaboration in presenting this study we are immeasurably grateful." [With]: A second copy of the book, this copy a fifth printing, near fine in near fine dustwrapper. This copy Inscribed by Cleckley in 1976 to his second wife Emily S. Cleckley: "Pour ma chere Emilie...," with a quote from A.E. Housman, and Initialed "H." Cleckley was an important psychiatrist and pioneer in the field of psychopathy. His book The Mask of Sanity, originally published in 1941, provided the most influential clinical description of psychopathy in the 20th Century. Cleckley and Thigpen's important case study of a victim of multiple personality disorder that, along with the faithful Nunnally Johnson film adaptation, brought widespread awareness of the illness. Johnson wrote, produced, and directed the film, featuring Oscar-winner Joanne Woodward, David Wayne, and Lee J. Cobb. .

Stanbrook Abbey Press, Worcester 1957 - 197 x 143 mm (7 3/4 x 5 5/8"). 3 p.l., 30 pp. Edited and modernized from the original versions by the Benedictines of Stanbrook Abbey. ONE OF 400 COPIES of the second impression. Publisher's flexible vellum with green silk ribbons. In the original (tape-repaired) cardboard slipcase. With calligraphic initials by Margaret Adams, one in burnished gold. Printed in Perpetua type by Dame Hildelith Cumming. "The Stanbrook Abbey Press: Ninety-Two Years of its History," pp. 68-69. In immaculate condition. This is an impeccable copy of the initial "fine printing" production of the revival of the Stanbrook Abbey Press after the death of its founder, the scholarly Roman Catholic nun, Lady Abbess Laurentia McLachlan (1866-1953). Established in 1876 at Stanbrook Abbey in Worcestershire, the press was one of the first modern hand-presses in England. According to DNB, Sir Sydney Cockerell "placed his connoisseurship and knowledge of fine book production at the disposal of this learned Benedictine house with its printing press, and his friendship with its abbess withstood even an imprudent introduction to another of his friends, George Bernard Shaw." Under printer Dame Hildelith Cumming, the Stanbrook Abbey Press became "renowned for the quality of its book design and press work. She initially sought advice from printers and typographers, notably Jan van Krimpen, whose types were used in the majority of fine books from 1958 onwards. The combination of handmade papers and distinguished types, with the calligraphy and decorations of Margaret Adams, characterized much of Stanbrook's output. The press produced some eighty titles between 1956 and 1988." (DNB) With a binding inspired by the Ashendene Press books in the abbey's library, "Christmas Lyrics" features Medieval hymns transcribed from manuscripts held by the British Museum and the libraries of Oxford and Cambridge Universities.         The Variorum Edition of the Poems of W. B. Yeats

The Macmillan Company, NY, 1957. Very Good with no dust jacket. Limited Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover Signed, Limited edition (No. 642 of 825). Signed by W. B. Yeats on the limitation page. Quarter bound in publisher's red cloth over gray cloth, gilt lettering on spine, top edge blue. Includes Preface, Introduction, Bibliography, Collations, Appendices, Index to Titles, and Index to First Lines. In the 1930's, W. B. Yeats signed 825 unbound pages, and his publisher, The Macmillan Company, held them. In 1939 Yeats died. In 1957 the signed sheets were bound into the first 825 copies of the Variorum Edition. Each copy was then wrapped for mailing. Somehow, 250 copies were misplaced in the Macmillan warehouse in New York. They turned up in the summer of 1963 when the contents of the warhouse were moved to New Jersey. All 250 copies were purchased by Kroch's & Brentano's for the members of the First Edition Circle. This is the definitive variorum edition of Yeats' poems. It was the editors' intention to note all of the changes that Yeats made to his poems in the course of their successive printings. The record begins in 1885 with the edition of The Dublin University Review which contained first two published poems; it ends with the two-volume definitive edition of his poetry in 1949, the proofs of which he had corrected shortly before his death in 1939. Poems that he published separately, in either periodical or book, but that he did not include in the definitive edition are included here in the section entitled "Poems Not Included in the Definitive Edition." . This is an extremely clean, little-used copy, unmarked, tight and square; the final page (only) is lightly creased, with a couple of small, closed tears, else as new. The scarce original slipcase is mildly worn along the fore-edges only, and lightly sunned, but structurally sound. VERY GOOD/VERY GOOD (slipcase). Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall. xxxv, 884 pp. Signed by Author

JONATHAN CAPE 1957 - First Edition, First Printing of FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE by Ian Fleming. Published by Jonathan Cape of London 1957. Only 15,000 copies of the first edition, first printing of this title were published, making this title far more rare than Dr. No or Goldfinger, both of which had between 20,000-24,000 first editions printed. The book comes with an original stunning bright first edition dust jacket. Original crisp black covered boards with a silver gun and red rose to the front of the boards. Unusually bright unfaded red titles to spine. Book is in great condition with crisp, square boards with sharp corners with one very tiny tip bump. The boards are clean with no edgewear. The book has a tight and square binding. The title is still bright red with no fading or oxidation which is quite unusual for this title as the title is often found faded or the red/orange tones have turned to brown. The end papers are clean with no book plates, no book store stamps, no owner names and no inscriptions. A few very faded small spot dots to front end paper, and outside of page block. The internal pages and end papers are bright, clean and flat with No marks, No inscriptions, No stains, No bent pages and No foxing. Beautiful bright clean book. Please see images for details. The original first edition dust jacket is in beautiful, bright condition for this title having benefited from very slight restoration by an expert paper conservationist to the spine tips and as such presents as a near fine example. This jacket is usually found in poor condition with large chips, and badly damaged and sunned (darkened) spines, and often large chunks of the spine completely missing. The colors tones of this jacket are usually bright with no toning or darkening to the spine as is otherwise common with this jacket. The jacket has No rips, No tears, No edgewear, No stains, but slight to inner flaps. Otherwise No chips, No rubbing, No foxing and No stains. Beautiful bright jacket which presents the book very nicely. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our Abe store for additional first edition Fleming listings [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
