Typed Contract signed between William Faulkner and Twentieth-Century Fox, assigning the motion picture rights to THE SOUND AND THE FURY

Beverly Hills, Calif: Twentieth Century-Fox, March 22, 1957. 8-1/2 x 11 inches. 11 pages (contract) + one page of Notary's witness (Bertha L. Dannay, Notary Public, State of New York); with single rider on overslip on page 7, initialled by Faulkner. In all, 12 pages. Holes punched in the left margin. In original typed blue paper folder. Excellent condition . 27 years after the publication of Faulkner's daring, controversial, and experimental novel, Hollywood was clearly interested in adapting the now-famous writer's book to the screen. In this contract Faulkner agrees to assign the movie rights to Twentieth Century Fox for a period of 7 years. In 1959, Fox's version of The Sound and The Fury -- which can at best only be called a loose adaptation of Faulkner's text -- was released, starring Joanne Wooward as Quentin Compson, and Yul Brynner as Jason. Interestingly, the contract specifically mentions prior agreements ("of no further force or effect") between Faulkner and Columbia Pictures in 1955

The Reefs of Taprobane: Underwater Adventures Around Ceylon

New York: Harper & Brothers. (1957). First. First American edition. Spine slightly faded, else near fine without dustwrapper. Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley, who was the dedicatee of his first hardcover novel (Islands in the Sky): "To Ian and Elsa, with my very best wishes for your future happiness - and hoping that you'll be able to visit us here one day. Arthur, 13 March '59." Macauley was an award-winning New York Times journalist, who also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood's End while visiting Macauley in Atlanta in 1952, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A splendid association copy, and not a book one usually finds signed by Clarke. .

Rosalind Franklin, whose X-ray photographs of DNA were crucial to Watson and Crick's discovery of the molecule's double helix structure in 1953, began researching the molecular structure of selected plant viruses after moving from King's College to Birkbeck College in mid-1953. She was aided in this work by Aaron Klug, who would later win the 1982 Nobel Prize in chemistry for developing crystallographic electron microscopy and for elucidating the structure of biologically important nucleic acid-protein complexes. The two began investigating the structure of tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), making several important discoveries regarding the arrangement of the virus's protein subunits and RNA strand; later in their researches Klug and Franklin agreed to divide the work, with Franklin taking on TMV and other rod-shaped plant viruses, and Klug concentrating on spherical plant viruses such as turnip yellow mosaic virus (TYMV). Klug continued his virus researches after Franklin's death, first at Birkbeck and later at Cambridge University's MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, which he joined in 1962.The present papers report "the early stages of an X-ray diffraction study of crystals of turnip yellow mosaic virus (TYMV). This has shown that the virus particle has cubic symmetry, with a strong pseudo-symmetry higher than that of the cubic unit cell of the crystal, and has given an indication of what the actual arrangement of the protein sub-units might be" ("The structure of turnip yellow mosaic virus: X-ray diffraction studies," p. 242). Klug, Franklin and Finch briefly announced their findings in Nature (no. [1] above), following up with a longer paper published in Biochimica et biophysica acta (no. [2] above). Fine, square and tight with lightly dust-soiled top edge; better than Near Fine jacket (priced-clipped), lightly dust-soiled and rubbed to ends of spine-panel. Burgess 99. "The Alexandria Quartet is one of those works that seem to draw upon and sum up a multitude of works and writers and bodies of knowledge that have come before. Sources specific to Egypt include Constantine Cavafy's poetry and E. M. Forster's Alexandria: A History and a Guide. Other sources range from The Arabian Nights to accounts of the life of occult philosopher Paracelsus, from the obsessive erotic catalogues of the Marquis de Sade (who wrote his own Justine and who provides three of the volumes with epigraphs) to the thrillers of John Buchan. Freud is here (providing a psychological framework and yet another epigraph), as well as his student Georg Groddeck. Durrell also utilizes Einstein's theory of relativity, recounting the same events from multiple viewpoints within the first three volumes, then advancing the characters and situations through the fourth dimension, time, in the fourth and final volume. . . . Whatever the merits of the works his contemporaries were producing in the 1950s, most of those seemed cautious and provincial compared to Durrell's unabashedly romantic and experimental novels." With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

An archive of 6 autograph letters signed to book illustrator and friend Don Freeman, 1956-1957, and academic Frank Stirling

N.p., N.p. 1957 - An archive of 6 autograph letters signed by Kenneth Millar (a.k.a. Ross Macdonald), 4 to book illustrator, longtime friend, and Santa Barbara neighbor Don Freeman, and 2 to an old professor and mentor from Ontario, Frank Stirling.A fascinating and unique collection of correspondence from Millar, full of personal inquiries, casual observations, and progress reports on children and mutual friends. Important, however, is a subtext regarding the author's ongoing psychoanalysis and the effect it was having on his life and work: "Heavens, you'd think from that remark that I was being analyzed. [I am] rediscovering the country of my childhood which isn't so very different from adult country, as Salinger people like you would be the first to agree. I'd say I'm well on through into the middle of it, too, and just wrote a good book ["The Galton Case"] quite fast by way of proving it." And again, "I suppose my best personal news is that the effect of analysis (I'm approaching termination) has been to reawaken, by some of the most extraordinary experiences, my interest in writing poetry, and I've come back after twenty years not with a whimper but a bang." The 2 letters to Frank Stirling come just before and just after a trip that reunited Millar with his old friend, respectively, and say much about the author's frustrations over trying to express himself in a literary fashion within the restrictions of the crime fiction genre.More than 2500 words in all, with each letter signed, "Ken." An intimate set of documents revealing much about a very private man, today a legend in the pantheon of literary crime fiction. Near Fine, onionskin stock, each letter dated with the author's address in Menlo Park. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
