        On The Road

New York: Viking Press, 1957.. New York: Viking Press, 1957. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Very good in the original dust jacket which has had some profesional restoration. What makes this copy interesting, is that it is from Columbia University Library Lending Service. It was taken out between Sep 11, 57 and ended Dec 3, 1957. The slip on the reverse is the only library mark. Kerouac came to Columbia on a football scholarship. In reality, though, he had been recruited by more football-friendly Boston College, and chose Columbia for its New York literary connections instead. He turned fully to writing after a broken leg in 1940, his first year"(New York Times). He enjoyed Professors Mark Van Doren and Raymond Weaver, and got an A in Van Doren's Shakespeare class. The raucous, exuberant, often wildly funny account of a journey through America and Mexico, Jack Kerouac's On the Road instantly defined a generation on its publication in 1957: it was, in the words of a New York Times reviewer, "the clearest and most important utterance yet made by the generation Kerouac himself named years ago as 'beat.'" Written in the mode of ecstatic improvisation that Allen Ginsberg described as "spontaneous bop prosody," Kerouac's novel remains electrifying in its thirst for experience and its defiant rebuke of American conformity. In his portrayal of the fervent relationship between the writer Sal Paradise and his outrageous, exasperating, and inimitable friend Dean Moriarty, Kerouac created one of the great friendships in American literature; and his rendering of the cities and highways and wildernesses that his characters restlessly explore are a hallucinatory travelogue of a nation he both mourns and celebrates. "On the Road has become a classic of the Beat Movement with its stream-of-consciousness depiction of the rejection of mainstream American values set in a physical and metaphysical journey across America" (Book in America, 136).

        The Chinese Puzzle

Collins/The Crime Club, 1957. Collins/The Crime Club, 1957. 1st edition. Hardcover. Bright red boards with black lettering. Slight offsetting on the endpapers, with a surname on the fep. The pages have some small, very occasional spots, slightly more so on the first and last few leaves; the front and lower text blocks are slightly spotted. The dustjacket is not price-clipped, has a few tiny rubs, and a crease along the lower edge, but is generally near fine - and quite scarce. Overall, a nice copy of a late crime novel by the author (aka John Rhode).

London - Chapman and Hall, 1957. London - Chapman and Hall, 1957 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold is a novel first published in 1957 by Evelyn Waugh. In fact, Waugh later admitted that 'Mr Pinfolds experiences were almost exactly my own', referring to this period in his life as 'my late lunacy'. He was advised to write the book by the then head of the psychiatric department at St Bartholomew's Hospital who interpreted the voices Waugh heard as hallucinations consequential to prolonged overconsumption of a mix of phenobarbitone and alcohol. Arthur Evelyn St. John Waugh (1903 - 1966), known as Evelyn Waugh, was an English writer of novels, travel books and biographies. He was also a prolific journalist and reviewer. Condition: In a cloth binding with unclipped dustwrapper. Externally, in excellent condition with onlyminor wear to extremities and the odd mark.         Theory and History: An Interpretation of Social and Economic Evolution

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1957.. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1957. First edition. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by Von Mises on the half title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light shelf wear. Theory and History discusses the theory of economics, the study of purposive human action, and with history, the record of the past actions of individuals. All actions are determined by ideas. Thoughts and ideas are "real things," Mises writes. "Although intangible and immaterial, they are factors in bringing about changes in the realm, of tangible and material things." Rather than rejecting the study of historical change as a "useless pastime," Mises considers it of the utmost practical importance. "History looks backward into the past, but the lesson it teaches concerns things to come.

Synthesis of the Elements in Stars" in Reviews of Modern Physics 29, October 1957, pp. 547-650

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of a seminal 100+ page paper that "describes hydrogen and helium are formed in the interior of stars" (Daintith, Oxford Dictionary of Scientists, 268). This paper, widely considered "one of the most authoritative and comprehensive works of modern science" is so famous that it is commonly referred to simply as B2FH after the initials of its authors (ibid). B2FH is credited with originating what is now known as the theory of stellar nucleosynthesis. An often quoted statement of Carl Sagan, "We are all star stuff," is simply his paraphrase of this review paper's thesis (ibid). B2FH predicted the chemical evolution of the universe testable through stellar spectral line emulsions, using this to illustrate the possibility that all heavy earth elements in face originate from the furnace-like cores of nearby extinct solar phenomena. CONDITION & DETAILS: "Synthesis of the Elements in Stars" in Reviews of Modern Physics 29, October 1957, pp. 547-650. Quarto (1.5 x 7.75 inches; 263 x 194mm). Original wraps. Bears the ownership signature of Herbert Conrad 'Hobey' De Staebler at the head of the front wrap. De Staebler was an important member of the experimental program at High Energy Physics Laboratory at Stanford. Additionally, Energies of Nuclei is written on the spine. Slightly faded at the spine. Withal, very good condition.& &

A THEORY OF THE CONSUMPTION FUNCTION

Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1957.. Princeton:: Princeton University Press,. 1957. First edition. A study for the National Bureau of Economic Research, where Friedman worked at the time. He set forth the permanent income hypothesis, a theory of consumption that assumes rational behavior by agents. In its simplest form, the hypothesis states that a change in permanent income, rather than a change in temporary income, affects the choices that determine a consumer's consumption patterns. The key conclusion of this theory is that transitory, temporary changes in income have little effect on consumer spending behavior, whereas permanent changes can have large effects on consumer spending behavior. 243 pages, including an index. 36 Figures and tables. Dark blue cloth, gilt-lettered spine. Small stamp on front endpaper ("Industrial Relations Department 1957"), otherwise bright and fine in a bright, near fine dust jacket with just one small tear, a few tiny marks and the spine slightly sunned. A very nice copy of a relatively scarce book by a recipient of the 1976 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, who was known for his research on consumption analysis, monetary history and theory, and the complexity of stabilization policy. The Economist described him as "the most influential economist of the second half of the 20th century ... possibly of all of it."

3 eigenh. Briefe mit U. ("Boni").

      O. O. bzw. [Paris], 8. Oktober 1957 bzw. o. D..
