The titles of each volume are written in pencil on the spines of the dust wrappers. The Prospectus announcing the publication of the set is placed at the front of the first volume. This is often missing. To accompany this set the following 4 books are included. "Mapping the Transmississippi West, 1540-1861: An Index to the Cartobibliography" by Charles A.         Studio portrait by Dorothy Wilding, signed by both subject and photographer, 1938; together with a copy of Hutton's privately-printed book of poems, The Wayfarer

Westerham, Kent: Westerham Press Limited,, 1957. Together, 3 items. Photograph (223 × 294 mm) in elaborate gilt frame, glazed. Book in original white vellum lettered and decorated in gilt, printed on art vellum paper, frontispiece portrait by Dulac, gilt edges; original blue-green card slipcase. Together with a print of the frontispiece portrait with additional floral border, framed (by Greville Rhodes, Hambledon, with his ticket). Fine condition. A fine studio portrait of the richest woman in the world, the Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton (1912–1979), the "poor little rich girl" of Noël Coward's song, who was married seven times, but suffered spousal abuse, anorexia, addiction problems, and died virtually penniless; together with a copy of Hutton's privately-printed book of poems, The Wayfarer, and a separate framed print of the Edmund Dulac frontispiece portrait from it. The photograph was one of several different poses from a sitting for Dorothy Wilding in her London studio at 22 Old Bond Street in 1938. Wilding was then at the peak of her renown, having taken a series of royal portraits, including the official coronation portrait of George VI in 1937; she opened a second studio in New York the same year. Hutton was in London frequently at this time, having her villa in Regent's Park rebuilt at huge expense and renamed Winfield Mansion (now the official residence of the US ambassador). The portrait is presented by Wilding in her characteristic stylish manner: the photograph, mounted on different layers of tinted card, is framed by tissue paper; a thick crayon outline surrounds the photograph and her signature is added at the foot. The Wilding art nouveau logo sticker is on the back. The photograph is inscribed by the sitter to her god-daughter Diana Kennerley, "To my favorite little girl Diana, with much love, Auntie Barbara". The book and framed portrait are also from the Kennerley family estate, although without gift inscription. The Wayfarer is a book of her poems privately published and given by her to friends and relatives, with a colour frontispiece portrait by Edmund Dulac (d. 1953), depicting her about the time of her marriage to Cary Grant in 1942. A number of the poems in the book were clearly written at, or inspired by, Sidi Hosni, her palace in Tangier, where she held legendary parties. Also included is a framed print of the Dulac frontispiece portrait, the scalloped oval of the book version embellished with an outer floral border.

In original mailing envelope hand-addressed by Prokosch (on which an old ink bookseller's description and price appears). A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books". Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions", which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. Additionally he reprinted some of the books between 1978-1980, but the provenance of this book, and the owner's notes that accompany the book indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. OCLC locates five copies. .

        CAT IN THE HAT

      - SEUSS,DR. THE CAT IN THE HAT. NY:Random Hse. (1957). 8vo, flat paper over boards (not glazed paper), 61p., slightest of rubbing on edges else fine in sl. frayed dw that is not price clipped but never had a printed price, however it is inscribed by the original owner June 1957 and this title was issued in the Spring of 1957! The original price of this book is the cause of considerable confusion. This first reader was originally published at $2.00. When the publishers decided to make a series of beginning readers, they priced all of them at $1.95 and lowered the price of this title to conform, thus the price of this book went down instead of up as time went by. However there are copies like this one with no printed price at all that were issued after the 200/200 price but before the 195/195 price. They are considered first editions, later issues, Illustrated in bright color throughout. The importance of this book cannot be overstated. In addition to becoming a household name, the Cat In The Hat is extremely important in the history of education and children's literature. At the same time that it was amusing, it was bringing the basic concepts of reading to tens of thousands of little children who were learning without being "taught". It was a marked departure from the boring Dick and Jane type reader. The challenge of writing an entire book using only 220 different words and making the book enjoyable was enormous. Teachers began to use this book in their classrooms and it was not long before the Cat In The Hat became an American icon. First editions of this title are extremely scarce. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Murnau, 3. III. 1950 bis 7. III. 1957. - 22 SS. Meist folio und die Karte. Gelocht. An den Kunsthändler Alex Vömel in Düsseldorf wegen Ausstellungen ihrer Werke. „[.]
