THE BLACK FLAME: A Trilogy - The Ordeal of Mansart, Mansart Builds a School, and Worlds of Color

New York: Mainstream Publishers, 1957. Book. Hardcover. Inscribed by Author(s). First Edition. Three volume set. New York: Mainstream Publishers, 1957, 1959, and 1961. First editions. An epic trilogy, described by its author as a fiction of interpretation. Acting as a representative biography of African American history, The Black Flame follows one man, Manuel Mansart, from birth in 1876 until his death. William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963), an American sociologist and historian, was the most important black protest leader in the United States during the first half of the 20th century. He shared in the creation of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909 and edited The Crisis, its magazine, from 1910 to 1934. The United States' Civil Rights Act, embodying many of the reforms for which Du Bois had campaign his entire life, was enacted a year after his death. Presentation copy, inscribed and dated by Du Bois to "The Bells" on the front flyleaf in the first volume. In 1916, Thomas Bell, M.D., and his wife Pearl moved from Tennessee to Brooklyn, New York, where they shared a two family house with Du Bois and his family. Dr. Bell and Du Bois developed a strong friendship during this time and the families remained close for years. The Bells settled in Newark, New Jersey, in 1922. Du Bois remained a frequent guest in the Bells' house, and was godfather to the Bells' youngest daughter, Thomasina. The papers of the Bells' eldest daughter, Katherine Bell Banks, which document this friendship, are at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries. Octavo. Original green cloth bindings, with gilt titles. Light foxing to the endpapers and edges of the third volume. Mild wear to the corners and tips. The dust jacket of the second volume is price-clipped.         Gay Bar [Limited Edition, Signed]

Pan-Graphic Press, San Francisco 1957 - Memoir of gay bar owner Helen Branson, whose bar "Helen's" was a San Francisco institution and a crucible for the nascent Gay Rights movement. A valuable picture of gay life at a time when homosexuality was still a forbidden topic for discussion or publication in the United States. This was the first production of the Pan-Graphic Press, which also published the seminal gay journal Mattachine Review. In James T. Sears' history of the Mattachine Press, he mentions the first printing for Gay Bar consisting of 1600 copies, with 500 sold prior to publication; we suspect these were likely the "Author's Edition," which would likely have been sold to friends and patron's of Branson's bar. A genuinely scarce title; we find no copies in the trade (2014), and OCLC notes fewer than 2 dozen institutional holdings. YOUNG 295. Author's Limited Premiere Edition, this being copy no.410. Slim octavo (21.5cm); blue cloth, with titles stamped in lime green on spine and front panel; dustjacket; 89pp. Inscribed by Branson on the limitation page: "Regards, Helen P. Branson / Hollywood 1957." Contemporary owner's name and date to front endpaper, with faint trace of foxing to text edges; very Near Fine. Dustjacket is unclipped (priced $3.00), with light, scattered foxing and a few small stains to panels; Very Good+. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Statistical Theory of Equations of State and Phase Transitions. I. Theory of Condensation" and "Statistical Theory of Equations of State and Phase Transitions. II. Lattice Gas and Ising Model" in The Physical Review, Volume 87, Number 3, August 1, 1952, pp. 404-409, pp. 410-419

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of the first full version (both parts one and two) of the Lee-Yang theorem, two "seminal papers that became classics in the field of statistical mechanics" (Hu, Yang-Lee-Fisher Zeros). Yang and Lee state "that if partition functions of certain models in statistical field theory with ferromagnetic interactions are considered as functions of an external field, then all zeros are purely imaginary (or on the unit circle after a change of variable)" (Wikipedia). The first paper "proposed a general theory of phase transitions by studying the distribution of the roots of the grand partition function, thenceforth known as 'Yang-Lee zeroes.' The second paper applied the general theory to the lattice gas and the Ising model and obtained the famous 'Lee-Yang circle theorem'" (Hu).& & Lee and Yang's papers were "the dream of physicist's life-time accomplishment" (Zhu, Lee-Yang theorem, MIT). They provided a "new way of looking at the nature of phase transitions and suggested that... partition functions as functions of external fields (in the case of Ising model, this would be magnetic fields), whose domains can be extended to the complex plane" (ibid). & & Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen-Ning Franklin Yang are Chinese born American physicists. They were jointly awarded the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics for their theory that weak force interactions among elementary particles did not conserve parity (spatial symmetry). CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Institute of Physics. 4to. 10.5 x 7.75 inches (262 x 194mm). Bound in original wraps rebacked. Very faint library stamps on the front and rear wrap as well as the first page; literally the stamps are very difficult to even see. Otherwise fine condition in every way.

ZORRO: Two Original Shooting Scripts (Two Original Propmaster-Annotated Scripts from the Original 1957 Television Series)

Burbank, CA: Walt Disney Productions, 1957. McCulley, Johnston (Walt Disney). ZORRO: Two original shooting scripts from the 1957 Zorro television series (Episodes #2 and #22) starring Guy Williams. Burbank, CA: Walt Disney Productions, 1957-8. Each 35+ pages long (including revised pages), each mimeographed and bound in blue studio wrappers; further, instead of being brad-bound, they are held together by rawhide ties, unusual and delightfully in keeping with the show's theme. These scripts (credited to Antony Ellis and H. B. Stone) were owned by the show's prop-master (a close friend of Guy Williams) and come with a detailed letter of provenance indicating that they were in his possession until sold in 1995 to a collector -- along with Guy Williams' best fighting sword (not included here, alas). The letter is quite worth reading as it gives excellent background material re: provenance. The two scripts are both heavily annotated with dozens of pages marked up in different colored pens by ZORRO's prop-master. There were 78 Zorro episodes produced during 1957-1958 yet few original scripts have survived; one reason suggested by research is that during the 1950s, script distribution for TV programs was far more limited and kept in-house than widely distributed as are the TV scripts of today. These scripts are entitled "Zorro's Secret Passage" (the 2nd episode ever filmed) and "The Unmasking of Zorro" (the 22nd episode). Despite Disney's ZORRO being an iconic character with timeless popularity, there are few opportunities for the collector to obtain genuine original pop cultural artifacts with this kind of importance and direct connection to the source. . Signed. First Edition. Printed Wrappers. Near Fine.

No. 4 of an unknown number of Author Presentation Proofs, this copy Inscribed to legendary bookseller John Scopazzi ("Dear John Scopazzi: Before you call the wagon, I can explain everything. This book sneaked up on me. Nobody can be more surprised than I was when it dribbled out on paper. I think it was imps. Yours, John Steinbeck"), and no one was more surprised than his editors and publisher when this book became a book-of-the-month selection as it is generally considered the least of all his published works, these unrevised galley proofs were printed on rectos only, two publisher labels are affixed to front cover, the first is numbered as #4 and includes publication information (with March crossed out under publication date with April written in), below it is another label with three paragraphs about the book (the $2.95 price has been marked out with $3 substituted), the proof has none of the preliminaries set in type nor any of the William Penn DuBois illustrations, not recorded by Goldstone & Payne, Morrow 240, now housed in a custom folding case.         Studio portrait by Dorothy Wilding, signed by both subject and photographer, 1938; together with a copy of Hutton's privately-printed book of poems, The Wayfarer.

Westerham, Kent: Westerham Press Limited, 1957 - Together, 3 items. Photograph (223 × 294 mm) in elaborate gilt frame, glazed. Book in original white vellum lettered and decorated in gilt, printed on art vellum paper, frontispiece portrait by Dulac, gilt edges; original blue-green card slipcase. Together with a print of the frontispiece portrait with additional floral border, framed (by Greville Rhodes, Hambledon, with his ticket). Fine condition. A fine studio portrait of the richest woman in the world, the Woolworth heiress Barbara Hutton (1912–1979), the "poor little rich girl" of Noël Coward's song, who was married seven times, but suffered spousal abuse, anorexia, addiction problems, and died virtually penniless; together with a copy of Hutton's privately-printed book of poems, The Wayfarer, and a separate framed print of the Edmund Dulac frontispiece portrait from it. The photograph was one of several different poses from a sitting for Dorothy Wilding in her London studio at 22 Old Bond Street in 1938. Wilding was then at the peak of her renown, having taken a series of royal portraits, including the official coronation portrait of George VI in 1937; she opened a second studio in New York the same year. Hutton was in London frequently at this time, having her villa in Regent's Park rebuilt at huge expense and renamed Winfield Mansion (now the official residence of the US ambassador). The portrait is presented by Wilding in her characteristic stylish manner: the photograph, mounted on different layers of tinted card, is framed by tissue paper; a thick crayon outline surrounds the photograph and her signature is added at the foot. The Wilding art nouveau logo sticker is on the back. The photograph is inscribed by the sitter to her god-daughter Diana Kennerley, "To my favorite little girl Diana, with much love, Auntie Barbara". The book and framed portrait are also from the Kennerley family estate, although without gift inscription. The Wayfarer is a book of her poems privately published and given by her to friends and relatives, with a colour frontispiece portrait by Edmund Dulac (d. 1953), depicting her about the time of her marriage to Cary Grant in 1942. A number of the poems in the book were clearly written at, or inspired by, Sidi Hosni, her palace in Tangier, where she held legendary parties. Also included is a framed print of the Dulac frontispiece portrait, the scalloped oval of the book version embellished with an outer floral border.

First edition, stated, Very good or better in a very good unclipped first issue dust jacket, with the price of $4.00 on the upper front flap, and the code of 7825A on the lower rear flap. This copy inscribed, signed and dated 10/16/ 57 by Bill Wilson in his distinctive, instantly recognizable hand on the front free endpaper. A library pocket and card on the rear endpaper, although unmarked and apparently uncirculated, and in all truth a minor blemish which does not diminish from the attractive and desirable qualities of this copy.         Relative state formulation of quantum mechanics," in Reviews of Modern Physics, 29, 1957, 454-462

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of Hugh Everett's famous "many-world interpretation" of quantum mechanics, an interpretation in which (to use Schrodinger's thought experiment) the universe splits in two: in one view we see a cat, in another we see ourselves seeing the cat. Though Everett's ideas remain controversial, they have been accepted in some form by many prominent physicists, among them Hawking and Feynman. Everett was fascinated by many of the paradoxes seemingly inherent in traditional quantum theory (Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 152). He did not accept Bohr's "collapse of the wave-function;" whereas Schrodinger's thought experiment posited a cat both alive and dead until the opening of a box. Everett's theory splits the universe into two states: in one we see a cat; in another we see ourselves seeing the cat. "In 1957, working under the direction of his Ph.D. supervisor John A. Wheeler, Everett produced a novel solution to the measurement problem of quantum mechanics. This problem is to explain how it is that quantum states in superpositions appear to experimenters who interact with them as if they have definite classical outcomes. Like many physicists, Everett was unhappy with the von Neumann collapse postulate and the arbitrary quantum classical divide, and he proposed that the simplest way to resolve the measurement problem was to suppose that reality is nothing more than a quantum wave function, and that wave function does not collapse. As Schrodinger emphasized, if classical measuring device interacts with a system that is in a superposition, the wave function of the measuring device (and the experimenter who runs it) becomes correlated with each component of the superposition. What bothered Schrodinger is that real observers do not see superpositions, but only definite results (such as either a definitely alive cat or a definitely dead cat). Everett's answer was simplicity itself: the observer together with his or her apparatus actually does split into two components (one who perceives a dead cat, the other who perceives a living cat) - but each version of the observer is correlated with the corresponding component of the cat. That is, the new state is a superposition of two states, one with an observer perceiving a live cat, and one with an observer perceiving a dead cat. Each observer seems to perceive a definite cat-state and not a superposition. However, these two components do not interact with each other in any way. It is exactly as if the universe has split in two. Every time one system becomes correlated with another system that is in a superposition, the world splits into as many versions as there are components of the observed system, and so on, ad infinitum. "Everett at first called his theory the relative state formulation of quantum mechanics. By this he meant that every observer could be in a number of different states, each one defined relative to a state of the system being measured. This later became known as the Many-Worlds Interpretation of quantum mechanics; [in] this view there literally is a colossal multiplicity of universes, multiplying exponentially or faster into more universes, with each universe playing out every possibility that is consistent with the laws of physics" (ibid, 152-153). CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Physical Society. Volume 29, Number 3, July 1957. Very small ex-libris stamp on the front wrap. 4to.
