The Decisive Battles of the Western World and their influence upon history

London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, , 1957. 3 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edge purple. With the dust jackets. Ownership signature to front free endpaper. A superb set, with only a little fading to spine of Vol. III, in the bright jackets that have sunned spines, some nicks to extremities, and a chip to foot of spine of Vol. III. Second impressions. The volumes were originally issued yearly between 1954-6. Presentation copies, each volume inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "To Henry, with greetings from the author - Boney." The 1939-40, two-volume, first edition of this work was (so Fuller claims in his preface) destroyed in the Blitz - a piece of great good fortune for him, as the text has been described by Anthony Trythall, Fuller's first biographer and a far from hostile witness, as "shrill Fascist special pleading." This rewritten and expanded version became "the major work on which his reputation as a historian must rest… thenceforward he was able to bask in the sunshine of a prophet restored to honour in his own country…" (Michael Carver in DNB).

        Voltaire in Love

London: Hamish Hamilton, (1957).. First edition. 8vo. 288 pp. Publisher's deep pink cloth, gilt lettered blue panel to the spine, Cecil Beaton designed dust jacket, not price clipped, inscribed by the author on the half title: "Maudie with love from Nancy". Two short tears without loss to the base of the spine, a little wear to the corners and a little light spotting, a very good copy overall. Frontispiece and 12 pages of black and white illustrations. Lady Maud Harvey, wife of Sir Oliver, the British ambassador to Paris between 1948 and 1954. Nancy was initially scathing about the couple, describing him as "odious" and, in a letter to Lady Pamela Berry in 1949, nicknaming her as "Morgue Harvey". However, the couple went up in her estimations considerably and she became especially fond of Maud, as evidenced by the warm inscription.

New York: Random House, 1957. First edition. Fine/Fine. A Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. The book is clean and unmarked, sharp and square. In a brilliant dust jacket without chips or tears, and completely unfaded, with just one small scuff near the spine. The jacket retains the critical $6.95 and 10/57 date code, essential for the first issue jacket. A book that is readily available, but rarely seen in such beautiful condition. Rand's magnum opus, where she develops her objectivist theory and explores the question, "what if society's genius goes on strike?" Rand considered the book "not about the murder of man's body, but about the murder and rebirth of man's spirit." "Atlas Shrugged" has remained one of the most popular and influential books written in the twentieth century; one survey in 1991 finding it second only to the Bible in having the greatest impact upon its readers. The book would also place first on Modern Library Reader's Poll of the Top 100 novels of the 20th century. "...the reader will stay with this strange world, borne along by its story and eloquent flow of ideas." (Contemporary Newsweek Review). Fine in Fine. dust jacket.

        Son Of Mother Goose

Np [BBC], London 1957 - 45 mimeographed pp., secured with split pin to top left. A little edgewear, some age-toning, occasional markings throughout (mostly parentheses). First edition. NO RECORDING OF THIS SHOW HAS SURVIVED. Recorded at the RAF Depot, Uxbridge, and transmitted on Boxing Day 1957, Son Of Mother Goose was written by Terry Nation (in his pre-Doctor Who days) and John Junkin. It co-starred Shani Wallis, Gilbert Harding, Stanley Unwin, Ronnie Hilton and the prodigiously stacked Sabrina who, with measurements of 42-17-36, may have been a little wasted on the radio. Here she plays the Fairy Godmother, and on her first entrance has the following exchange: SABRINA: 'I've been having a nibble at Ronnie Hilton's hot meat pie' FRANKIE: 'Well, wipe the gravy off your chin.' We assume this was put in for the live RAF audience and cut before broadcast, but we'll never know, as no recording of the show has survived. However, a reading of the script shows that Nation and Junkin knew exactly how to write to Howerd's strengths. Both here and in Fine Goings On, a radio series they would write for him the following year, Howerd was given plenty of freedom to use the gossipy, straight-out-front style for which audiences would come to love him. An original typescript, of a lost show, co-written by the creator of the Daleks, and starring a legend of British comedy.

Meine Augen sind müde. Plakatmanifest und Ausstellungskatalog 'Malereien von Hundertwasser' 17. Okt. - 24. Nov. 1957.

Wien, Galerie St. Stephan 1957.. 31,5 x 89 cm. 1 Bogen, beidseitig bedruckt (Offset), gefaltet..

        Some Came Running

xii+1266 pages. Thick octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in half red cloth with black lettering to spine and cover. Inscribed to Davis Grubb. First edition. James Jones's second published novel, Some Came Running (1957), had its roots in the abandoned first effort. In contrast to Eternity, it was savaged by the critics. They were especially harsh with the frequently misspelled words and punctuation errors; they didn't recognize that such elements were a conscious style choice by Jones to evoke the provinciality of the novel's characters and setting. Jones apparently played around with this style in several short stories written at about the same time as Some Came Running (later collected in The Ice-Cream Headache and Other Stories), only to abandon it altogether by the time he finished The Thin Red Line in 1962, in favor of the blunt but more grammatically sound style most associated with Jones today. Some Came Running was immediately adapted as film starring Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Shirley MacLaine, which was critically acclaimed and nominated for several Oscars. Davis Grubb (July 23, 1919 - July 24, 1980) was an American novelist and short story writer. Born in Moundsville, West Virginia, Grubb wanted to combine his creative skills as a painter with writing and as such attended the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. However, his color blindness was a handicap he could not overcome and he gave up on painting to dedicate himself to writing fiction. He did, however, make a number of drawings and sketches during the course of his career, some of which were incorporated into his writings. In 1940, Grubb moved to New York City where he worked at NBC radio as a writer while using his free time to write short stories. In the mid 1940s he was successful in selling several short stories to major magazines and in the early 1950s he started writing a full length novel. Influenced by accounts of economic hardship by depression-era Americans that his mother had seen first hand as a social worker, Grubb produced a dark tale that mixed the plight of poor children and adults with that of the evil inflicted by others. The Night of the Hunter became an instant bestseller and was voted a finalist for the 1955 National Book Award. That same year, the book was made into a motion picture that is now regarded as a classic. Deemed "culturally significant" by the Library of Congress, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. Grubb went on to write a further nine novels and several collections of short stories. His 1969 novel Fools' Parade would also be made into a motion picture starring James Stewart. Some of Grubb's short stories were adapted for television by Alfred Hitchcock and by Rod Serling for his Night Gallery series. Grubb died in New York City in 1980. His novel Ancient Lights was published posthumously in 1982, and St. Martins Press published 18 of his short stories in a book collection titled You Never Believe Me and Other Stories.Condition:Inscribed by Jones on half title. Touch of rubbing to spine ends. Jacket spine ends lightly chipped with some rubbed, some light wear to edges with some small closed tears, price clipped else a near fine copy in like jacket.
