The Blind Owl (INSCRIBED by Henry Miller to fourth wife Eve McClure)

London: John Calder, 1957. 1st. Hard Cover. Very Good copy in worn dust jacket with loss at extemities.. Octavo; 134 pages. Inscribed "To/Eve/from/Henry/Berlin/10/24/62" (their divorce had just become final that June). McClure used the verso of ffep and half title to schedule and make her gift and 'to-do' lists for Christmas week, 1962, which include her sister Louise, Miller's sister Lauretta and children Barbara, Val and Tone (sic) as well as many of the couple's Big Sur and Carmel friends and associates, reminding herself to 'Finish moving out old studio,' ''Wash H.M. studio window - make up beds,' etc. Miller was taken with Iranian Hedayat's cult classic 'The Blind Owl' and was convinced a movie should be made of it ('I never stop talking about Hedayat's book, and certainly not with cinema people...' - from a 1964 letter in which he urged Hedayat's French publisher Jose Corti to reissue it in softcover). A fascinating - personal - glimpse of the Partington Ridge world Miller himself later described thus: 'It's almost as if, in quitting Big Sur, I walked out of my true paradise - and now, like the hero of "Lost Horizon," I am fucked!'.

        Dandelion Wine: A Novel

Garden City, NY: Doubleday and Company, 1957 First edition. Inscribed by Bradbury on the front free endpaper: "For Stu! / Very late in / the day - many / years after you / bought this - but / with fervent good / wishes from / Ray Bradbury / [rule] / July 26, 1970". Publisher's bright yellow cloth, lettered in gilt and pale blue; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Robert Vickrey, with an illustration of a dandelion field to the front panel and spine, lettered in white and pale blue. Very good, with some light wear to the extremities, a hint of toning to the spine and board edges, faint tape stains to the otherwise clean boards, bright and fresh interior; unclipped dust jacket, with some wear and rubbing to the spine ends, a hint of faint soiling to the rear panel, short closed tear with tape to the rear panel. Overall, tight and attractive copy, inscribed by the author. Bradbury inscribed this copy of Dandelion Wine to Stuart Oderman, a pianist best known for his musical accompaniments for silent films. Although the origin of their friendship is unclear, Bradbury and Oderman were long-time friends and maintained a steady written correspondence from the early 1960s through Bradbury's death in 2012. In a 2008 interview with The Star Ledger, Oderman cited Bradbury as one of his favorite authors. Dandelion Wine is a semi-autobiographical novel that tells the story of Douglas Spaulding, a resident of Green Town, Illinois, a fictional small town based on Bradbury's hometown of Waukegan. Specifically it follows Spaulding's episodic adventures during "three months of unguessed wonders." Notably, Dandelion Wine is the first in a series of four books set in Green Town and is followed by its companion text Something Wicked This Way Comes (1962); while Dandelion Wine is a the story of two 12 year old boys during one blissful summer, Something Wicked This Way Comes is about two 13 year old boys during one hauntingly terrifying autumn.. Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

A fine copy in nearly fine dust jacket with light wear to upper spine. end and front corner tips, short closed tear at top edge of front. panel, and just a touch of dust soiling on front and rear panels. A. nice copy of an elusive book rarely found in superior condition.. (#105678). First edition. The second novel featuring detective Elijah Bailey and his robot partner R. Daneel Olivaw by "the writer who virtually invented the science fiction mystery. In his novels THE CAVES OF STEEL (1954) and THE NAKED SUN (1957) and in the stories collected as ASIMOV'S MYSTERIES (1968), he masterfully bridged the gap between the two genres and proved that genuine detective fiction could be set in the future as well as in the present or past." - Pronzini and Muller, 1001 Midnights, p. 29. The human/robot detective team solve another murder, this one committed on Solaris, an Outer World with a robot-run economy, where the twenty thousand Solarians, thinly spread out over the surface of the planet, live in near total isolation from each other, and the presence or touch of another Solarian produces incapacitating physical repugnance. Bailey, from an underground Earth city, must overcome his fear of open spaces to solve the crime. "In its setting, it's a sort of inversion of THE CAVES OF STEEL, and it's equally cleverly plotted." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), p. [249]. ARTHUR HENRY, PIERPONT FULLER JR., ARTHUR K. UNDERWOOD, STEPHEN H. HART, GEORGE R. DAY, JOSEPH G. HODGES, WHITMAN BEST.Summary:Twelfth Night; or, What You Will is a comedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written around 1601?"02 as a Twelfth Night's entertainment for the close of the Christmas season. The play centers on the twins Viola and Sebastian, who are separated in a shipwreck. The play focuses on the Countess Olivia falling in love with Viola (who is disguised as a boy), and Sebastian in turn falling in love with Olivia. The play expanded on the musical interludes and riotous disorder expected of the occasion, with plot elements drawn from the short story "Of Apollonius and Silla" by Barnabe Rich, based on a story by Matteo Bandello. The first recorded performance was on 2 February 1602, at Candlemas, the formal end of Christmastide in the year's calendar. The play was not published until its inclusion in the 1623 First Folio. Background:William Shakespeare (26 April 1564 (baptized) ?" 23 April 1616) was an English poet, playwright, and actor, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. His plays have been translated into every major living language and are performed more often than those of any other playwright.1897 - As part of Commencement ceremonies, graduating seniors perform a Shakespeare play under the direction of the Professor of Oratory and Dramatic Expression, a practice that extends until 19161919 - George F.         Across the Bridge. Collection of 47 stills from the 1957 British film noir.

1957 - Collection of 47 vintage black-and-white single weight reference photographs (4 images duplicated) from the UK release of the 1957 British film noir, most with mimeograph description leaves and studio stamps on the verso. Accompanying the set is a 2-page press release (1 leaf ditto-style mimeograph, the other a carbon). Included are 32 photos sized 8 x 10 inches, 8 photos sized 7.5 x 9.5 inches, 3 photos sized 8.5 x 7.5 inches, 1 photo sized 8.75 x 7.25 inches, one photo sized 9 x 7.5 inches, and one photo sized 9.25 x 7.25 inches. 11 of the photographs have a rubber stamp at the verso reading "Copyright Pictorial Press"; 10 have a blue "Pictorial Press" stamp along with a ditto-style mimeograph description on a leaf affixed to the verso; 2 have the blue stamp, the mimeo description leaf, plus a new yellow "Pictorial Press" sticker; 2 have the blue stamp, the mimeo description leaf, plus a second "Atlantic Press" rubber stamp; finally, 22 2 have the blue stamp, the mimeo description leaf, and a second red stamp reading "Copyright pour la suisse par Len Sirman." An excellent set of reference stills for this low budget British noir, a film that brought Rod Steiger across the ocean in order to put his formidable character acting skills into what became a critically praised film. Shot in Spain (but represented as Mexico), "Across the Bridge" expands on Graham Greene's short story, bringing more specifics to the author's intentionally empirical outline. Steiger plays a crooked businessman on the run who steals a man's passport in order to hide out in Mexico, only to discover that the passport belongs to a wanted political assassin.

        The Cat in the Hat

New York: Random House, 1957. First U.S. edition, first printing. This is the first edition, first printing, in dust jacket of one of the most iconic books by one of the world's most iconic children's authors, Dr. Suess.  Born in Springfield, Massachusetts, Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904-1991), later known to the world as Dr. Seuss, was "probably the best-loved and certainly the best-selling children's book writer of all time" (New York Times Book Review).  Geisel started out as a freelance cartoonist and then, perhaps improbably, an advertising department employee of Standard Oil, where he spent 15 years.  His first children's book, And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, was conceived aboard a ship returning from a European vacation with his wife, where it was the rhythm of the ship's engine that inspired the story's signature rhyme.  The book was rejected 27 times before being published by Vanguard Press.  Geisel's illustration style, with the addition of his signature rhymes, would become the basis for his 44 children's books.  The Cat in the Hat, published in 1957, was the result of a joint venture between Houghton Mifflin and Random House. While Geisel was under contract with Random House, Houghton Mifflin approached him to write a children's book using only vocabulary from a list of 225 words for early readers. Due to his contract, Random House retained the trade publication rights while Houghton Mifflin obtained the school rights.  By all accounts, Geisel underestimated the challenge of working within the confines of the word list.  "Seuss was used to inventing words when he needed them, so to stick to a word list was a huge challenge for him," and it reportedly took him a year and a half to write the book.  Intended by the publisher as a children's primer, the book vastly exceed expectations, and its huge success made "Dr. Suess" a household name.  The Cat in the Hat also revolutionized the conventional approach to children's primers.  The book was so successful that Random House created a special division, Beginner Books, with the Cat in the Hat as the logo and Dr. Suess as president of the division.  Here is the first edition, first printing in the rare first edition dust jacket.  All of the first edition points are present; "200/200" on the dust jacket upper front flap, unglazed binding, and contents comprised of a single signature. Condition of both the dust jacket and volume is very good plus.  The binding remains square and tight with bright color, showing only minor wear and slight toning and soiling to extremities.  The contents remain clean and bright with no previous ownership marks or spotting noted.  The dust jacket is notably bright and complete, with light wear primarily confined to the hinges, spine ends and corners, a 1.25 inch closed tear at the lower front flap hinge, and light soiling, mainly to the rear panel.  The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.
