HERE Is The SPECTACULAR 1958 CHEVROLET. A Car that Beautifully Captures the Flair of Contemporary Living. Lower and Longer, Wider and Stronger. Truly a Giant Step Forward in Motoring!

Chevrolet Motor Division, General Motors Corporation, Detroit, MI 1957 - 95, [5 (Chevrolet Specificiations)] pp. Fabric and Color Booklet unpaginated. Over 200 color illustrations, color plates (some double-page), text illustrations, diagrams; 28 printed colour paint sample combinations (5 x 8.75 in.) spiral bound bound side-by-side w/ 11 leaves on thick stock (6.25 x 8.75 in.), and 104 interior upholstery color samples and combinations spiral bound as well, both mounted on back pastedown to fold-out when opened. Oblong format: 10" x 13-3/8" A scarce Dealer?s showroom sample catalogue for the 1958 Chevrolet passenger cars. These included Corvettes, Impalas, Bel Airs, Biscaynes, Nomad Station Wagons, Brookwood Station Wagons, Delray models, and the Yeoman Station Wagons. The 1958 Chevrolet Bel Air, Chevrolet Delray, and Biscayne were better as well as bigger than the 1957 models, leaning more toward luxury. Quad headlights, the low silhouette which was nine inches longer and five inches lower, a stretched wheelbase, and heavier by 200 to 300 pounds. For the first time, the full size cars were offered with bigger engines than the Corvette, so the low-budget Delray could be powered with a 348, the forerunner to the iconic 409. The Impala was introduced in 1958 as a high-performance, high luxury trim option for the Bel Air, with big fins, quad headlights, and six tail lamps along with a lot of chrome. In 1959, the Impala was entirely redesigned, so the 1958 model year was unique. The 1958 Corvette featured hood louvers and twin trunk spears as well as a new steering wheel and dashboard. No institutional holdings located on OCLC. Rare. Significant wear and rubbing to binder, soiling to pastedowns on inside of binder covers, as well as a blue crayoned "#1" to inside front cover. Overall a Good+ example. Color illustrated, paper covered 19-ring binder. Graduated thumb tabs divide sections at fore-edge. Metal spiral notebook in rear of "Colors" for the automobiles (fabric sample notebook attached to binder). Stiff-stock color illustrated paper

Brief Authority: Excursions of a Common Man in an Uncommon World / Recollections of China and Thailand

Robert Hale Limited, London 1957 - Signed 290 pages. Index. Signed and inscribed by author upon half-title page. First printed in the US by Harper & Brothers in 1956. "Author was born in 1901 and in 1921 was appointed to the American Legation in Peiping - although his actual diplomatic career began in 1923 when he was named Vice-Consul at Mukden. For the next eighteen years he held various posts in many parts of China, until December 1941 - while he was American Counsul at Shanghai - when the Japanese captured the city and he was interned for several months. Named Consul General at Vancouver in 1945, he left the next year to become Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, later American Ambassador to Thailand, a post he held until his retirement in 1953. He saw China and Manchuria in chaos under the warlords. He witnessed the growth of Chinese nationalism, and China's suffering as first the Japanese and then the Communists struggled for ascendency." - from dust jacket. Average wear. Tanning to endpapers. Binding intact. Above-average wear to dust jacket now preserved in mylar. An important account of these pivotal years in China, as witnessed by an American diplomat.         Domaren. En tragisk komedi i sex scener.

      - Stockholm; Bonniers, 1957. Originalupplaga. 19,5x13 cm. Ryggfoten lätt naggad. Svagt vikmärke vid främre omslagets övre hörn. Deltitelbladet något gulnat av ilagt tidningsurklipp. Fin inlaga. Dedikation: "Till Kristina med en innerlig julhälsning från hennes tillgivne Vilhelm". [?To Kristina with a heartfelt Christmas greeting from her affectionate Vilhelm?]. Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973), Swedish journalist, social critic, and one of Sweden?s foremost authors of the 20th century. He was born in Algutsboda in the province of Småland, where his father served as a soldier. Moberg worked in his youth with farming and forestry. After a few years of schooling, he worked as a journalist at different provincial newspapers, in which he also published his first short stories. His breakthrough as an author came in 1927 with the novel ?Raskens. The Story of a Soldier?s Family?, where he depicts the life of the tenant farmers in 19th century Småland. His foremost work, which has been widely translated and is considered one of the finest epic works in Swedish 20th century literature, is ?The Emigrant Novels? (1949-1959). In this tetralogy he describes the Swedish emigration to North America through the story of the farmer Karl Oskar Nilsson and his wife Kristina. Moberg was politically engaged and always fought for individual rights, and for the abolition of the monarchy and the State Church of Sweden. He intervened in affairs of corrupt legal practice and published the bestselling book ?Why I am a Republican? (1955). His political views were inspired by his visits to USA and by the Swiss constitution. Moberg had a love affair with a woman named Kristina, whose name he used for the main character Kristina from Duvemåla of ?The Emigrant Novels? This love affair has remained unknown for over half a century, until a collection of his novels, all inscribed by Moberg to Kristina [Odelberg/Hedenblad (1917-2005)], appeared on the market. Judging from the tone in the inscriptions, the relation between Moberg and Kristina was initially intimate and loving, and gradually devolving into affection. In the early inscriptions from the 1940s Moberg writes, for instance: ?To Kristina, my confidant and beloved!?, and in the play ?Chastity? he writes: ?Vilhelm Moberg?s chastity ? what is left of it is hereby dedicated to Kristina? The later in-scriptions from the 1960s contain phrases like: ?with a devout greeting? and ?from her affectionate Vilhelm? In the copy of ?The Emigrants? (?Utvandrarna?, 1949) Moberg writes: ?To Kristina, my be loved, who has lent her name to the female main character in this book, with gratitude and love from The Author.? In the last inscription, in the pocket edition of ?The Emigrant Novels? from 1969, he returns to the fact that she has given her name to Kristina from Duvemåla, which shows that the thought of her had occupied his mind during all these years, and it is also a sign of her probable influence on his writing from 1945 onwards. What further strengthens this opinion is the copy of ?Our Unborn Son?, a play from 1945, which deals with the issue of abortion. This is the only one of these books that has been bestowed with a fine leather binding, with a pocket at end of the volume where Kristina has collected newspaper cuttings on the book and its author, suggesting that the theme of this novel was essential to her. The book was translated into Danish in 1947, and in the collection there is a copy of the Danish edition which has been inscribed to Kristina by the translator thus: ?? This book, which is partly about you?? [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Plane gravitational waves in general relativity" in Nature 179, May 25, 1957, pp. 1072-1073

BOUND FIRST EDITION OF HERMANN BONDI'S 1957 THOUGH EXPERIMENT DEMONSTRATING THAT GRAVITATIONAL WAVES INDEED CARRY ENERGY, and furthermore that in order to carry energy (and momentum), gravitational waves must be nonlinear. Gravitational waves, or ripples in the fabric of spacetime, were first predicted by Einstein's 1916 general theory of relativity. Bondi's paper firmly established the physical reality of gravitational waves; his later work in the early 1960s (and in papers we also offer) would put "their physical properties such as energy and momentum flux on a rigorous mathematical footing" (Denef, Science, Feb. 2016). In February 2016, the September 2015 detection of gravitational waves - waves first predicted by Einstein over a hundred years ago - was announced. Inspired by conversations with and a presentation by British theoretical physicist Felix A. E. Pirani early in the same year, Bondi began to study gravitational radiation, "in particular the question of quantifying the energy and momentum carried off 'to infinity' by a radiating system" (Wikipedia). At his Chapel Hill conference presentation, Pirani had described the "mathematical properties of general relativity that led Feynman to propose a thought experiment called 'the sticky bead argument' for gravitational waves" (Wenner Collection). The sticky bead argument is a thought experiment presented at the same conference. It was designed by Feynman to illustrate that the gravitational radiation first predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity does in fact exist (see note below). The experiment envisions a gravitational wave causing beads on a stick to vibrate, resulting in frictional heating; Feynman believed that this evidence of physical effects demonstrated that a gravitational wave transports energy and is therefore measurable. Feynman "felt that any system which could be an absorber of waves could also be an emitter. For these reasons, he expected gravitational waves to exist" (Foenner, The Expanding Worlds of General Relativity, 220). The work of Feynman and Pirani convinced Bondi that two papers of significance published in the late 1930s, papers by Nathan Rosen needed to be refuted and he did so in the form of a letter printed in Nature - the document offered here. Writing in both an American and a Soviet journal, Rosen had argued "that plane gravitational waves were an impossibility due to the ineradicability of singularities in the metric" (ibid). Bondi's letter, "Plane gravitational waves in general relativity," is his refutation of Rosen's work and is his argument - using what he learned from Feynman and Pirani -- in favor of the existence of Einstein's gravitational waves. Over a hundred years later science would prove both Einstein and Rosen correct. Note: "Bondi supposedly learned of the sticky bead argument from Feynman at the Conference on the Role of Gravitation in Physics at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, March 1957, but there are conflicting versions of this story. Daniel Kennefick, in Traveling at the Speed of Thought (2007) reports that Bondi came up with the sticky bead idea independently at the meeting and suggests that Weber and Wheeler may have also done so" (Wenner). CONDITION & DETAILS: Full bound volume. (11 x 8 inches; 275 x 200mm). Ex-libris: Minor ghosting at spine from the removal of a spine label; two small stamps on rear pastedown; one pencil notation on front pastedown. Tightly bound in red cloth; gilt-lettered at the spine; very slight wear at the edges.

Across The Bridge (Original UK poster for the 1957 British film noir)

London: The Rank Organization, 1957. Original British quad poster for the 1957 British film noir A low budget British film noir that brought Rod Steiger across the ocean in order to put his formidable character acting skills into what became a critically praised film. Shot in Spain (but represented as Mexico), "Across the Bridge" expands on Graham Greene's short story, bringing more specifics to the author's intentionally empirical outline. Steiger plays a crooked businessman on the run who steals a man's passport in order to hide out in Mexico, only to discover that the passport belongs to a wanted political assassin. 30 x 40 inches.         Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch

New York: A New Directions Book, 1957. First edition. Hardcover. SIGNED. Octavo [21 cm] Orange cloth covered boards with a black ink stamped title on the spine. Very good. The extremities are slightly rubbed and bumped. The covers have small barely perceptible moisture stains, and the bottom edges of the covers are lightly damp stained. There is a little dark dot-like stain on the bottom edge of the front board. The spine is subtly rolled and darkened. There is a small soiled scuff mark on the bottom edge of the text block. The endsheets have large areas of discoloration. In a very good dust jacket. Mildly yellowed, soiled and rubbed. There are under a dozen very small, faint damp stains on the jacket. The creased edges have multiple chips, short closed tears and very small losses. The internal non-visible side is foxed. Overall, an attractive jacket. Miller entered into the writer's circle with Tropic of Cancer, which still proves to be Miller's most famous work. Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn depict Miller's lives and loves as an expatriate in Paris. They were first published in France by Jack Kahane at Obelisk Press in the mid-thirties. When the works were brought to the United States, they sparked a thirty year censorship debate that was eventually won by Miller. Inscribed by Miller in the year of publication on the front free endsheet.

A very upset Princess Grace writes her MGM agent ?Like a fool ? I signed this note which will give Gant Gaither permission to write what ever he likes ? He sent me the galleys. I nearly collapsed when I saw the cover. The Story of Grace Kelly. I just couldn?t believe it ? I found the whole thing so unbearably personal and in bad taste??

[Switzerland], Thursday, [Aug 29/Sep 1957]. 8.25" x 10.5". "Typed Letter Signed ?Grace,? 2p, 8.25? x 10.5?, separate sheets. [Switzerland], Thursday [August 29 / September 1957]. To her MGM press agent, Morgan [Hudgins]. Lightweight paper. Fine condition. On July 3, 1957, Princess Grace and Prince Rainier began a two month vacation in a chalet in Schonreid, Switzerland. ?Princess of Monaco: The Story of Grace Kelly? by Gant Gaither was published by Henry Holt & Company in New York on August 26,1957. Gant Gaither had known Grace Kelly since she was an apprentice actress in Bucks County Playhouse, in New Hope, Pennsylvania. In 1949, at the age of 19, she made her stage debut there in ?The Torchbearers? written by her uncle, 1926 Pulitzer Prize winning playwright George Kelly. In full, ?Just received your letter concerning the Imperial Ball. Please tell them for me that we very much appreciate their kind invitation but it is impossible for us to be there at that date. Conrad Hilton asked us to the same affair last year. It is just too far for one evening and November is a very busy time for us in Monaco. Thanks so much for your very newsy letter of July 24th. The statement of Mr. Vogel was quite something. What a pity there is so much confusion and jealousy it makes it so much more difficult.?Gant is very amusing and great fun to be around and he was always so sweet and such a good friend to me. That is why I was so hurt and disappointed when he chose [next five words are handwritten] the loyaltie (& royalties) of Henry Holt instead of considering a friendship. I was a bit embarrassed when Gant first asked me if he could write a book (that would be mostly photographs) of the wedding and Monaco. It was an odd thing for a friend to want to do but because he was a friend I said yes. He felt I had doubts and assured me that it would be done with great taste and I would certainly be pleased. He also said if I wasn?t that he wouldn?t do it. You know how I hate personal things printed and Gant knows that too.?In New York he told me that a few changes were being made and I begged to see any part of it as I was getting anxious as to how the story was being changed. Gant always said that it was in such a rough state that he couldn?t show it. Finally in March or the end of Feb. He sent me the galleys. I nearly collapsed when I saw the cover. The Story of Grace Kelly. I just couldn?t believe it. Gant has an amusing way of tell-[ing] a story but in print it loses the humour and I found the whole thing so unbearably personal and in bad taste and the few things I asked him to take out - from what I have seen quoted in columns were never taken out. I should have learned that lesson long ago but I don?t know why I am such a sucker to go on believing people. No writer yet has ever kept his word about cuts. Gant has me saying things that I have never uttered and that is the most infuriating part. Anything a person has said that I have been in the same room with is always attributed to me. I should be used to it but I guess I never will.?On the Constitution before landing in Monaco [for her April 19, 1956 wedding] Gant asked me to write him a letter or note saying that I approved of the project. Like a fool I did without mentioning a title or anything. I didn?t fully realise what it was about and what exactly the note was for (As I was not really at my mental best at the time) So I signed this note which will give Gant Gaither permission to write what ever he likes and as long as he likes about me. I am stuck.?The fact that the book is boring and full of slop is not the point and with all of the other slop that has been written I am really beyond caring very much but the principle of the thing annoys hell out of me, that I could have been such a sucker and that a friend took advantage of me. I don?t believe Gant would have change the idea of the book if Henry Holt co. hadn?t asked him to but he considered them and everyone else before me. Besides a friend?s job above all is discretion. Enough about that. It is something I would like to forget.?We have had a wonderful summer here in Switzerland and I hate the thought of going home. Our Baby has a tooth and Oliver is the father of six beautiful puppies. I am not looking forward to the trip to Monaco with nine dogs, not to mention baby and equipment, two days of driving. Burt Lancaster would be wonderful as Ben Hur. When you?re in Italy you must stop by in Monaco at some point. It would be so nice to see you. Give my best to all. Fondly.?"

        Scanno

, , 1957. Ottimo (Fine). Fotografia originale in bianco e nero firmata a penna dall'Artista, timbrata e titolata al verso (''Scanno'', Mario Giacomelli, Via Mastai 24, 60019 Senigallia, An). Pubblicata in Enzo Carli, ''Giacomelli.

        Document signed (concert program)

1957 - (ARMSTRONG, Louis). (MIDDLETON, Velma). Document signed (concert program). No place: No publisher, no date [1957]. Quarto, original stiff glossy photographic wrappers, staple-bound as issued; pp. 16. $1650.Vintage concert program booklet, illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs, signed in green ink on the front cover “Satchmo, Louis Armstrong,” further signed by singer Velma Middleton at her photograph.“Louis Armstrong and but three or four others are preeminent in the history of jazz. His importance in the development of this art form has gained greater, almost universal, recognition in the years since his death as scholars and musicians reevaluate his contributions as a soloist, composer, band leader and role model. The measure of his impact on the social history of 20th-century America also seems to be greater now as he gains recognition for his contributions to the Harlem Renaissance, for his actions as a thoughtful spokesman for black Americans, as a significant writer of autobiography, as an entertainer of stature and as a singer responsible for the development of major trends in American popular and jazz singing” (ANB). “Satchmo” signed the cover of this souvenir program booklet, obtained at a September 21, 1957 concert near Sioux City, Iowa. The cover depicts the trumpeter with his horn under his arm and its case in his hand; the booklet features numerous black-and-white images of Armstrong and his fellow musicians. Armstrong’s long-time singer Velma Middleton has signed the booklet at her photograph on page [14]. Concert seating ticket laid in. Previous owner’s ink annotation to front cover, affecting neither Armstrong’s image nor signature.Interior with slight marginal soiling to page [3]. Only light soiling to wrappers. A very nearly fine piece of jazz memorabilia, desirable signed by Middleton and Armstrong. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

The importance of his graphic work, continuous renewal and enrichment of his style show the high value which the artist attached to this medium of expression.Miro uses black ink with a range of values and refined tones, reaching wild and playful effects.         [The] Desk Set (Original screenplay for the 1957 film, master copy with profuse annotations to dialogue)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1957. Final Shooting script for the 1957 film. Master copy, with numerous paste-ups and holograph pencil corrections throughout, with stock varying from onionskin to eye-rest green office paper. Corrections are mostly to dialogue, but include notations regarding direction, deletions, and a few notations in shorthand. The penultimate Hepburn and Tracy film, and a significant script in that dialogue--which sees many changes here--was always at the heart of the pair's nine on-screen collaborations. Also significant in that it was one of the first major motion pictures to address computing: when IBM introduced its state-of-the-art computer SSEC in 1948, it was called a computational machine because the term "computer" then referred to people involved in computation, and IBM founder Thomas Watson worried its use would feed public fears of machines replacing workers. Still sensitive to the issue in 1956, IBM assisted in the production of "The Desk Set," in which Tracy plays an engineer who brings havoc into an office with the introduction of EMMARAC (Electro-Magnetic Memory and Research Arithmetical Calculator). Goldenrod studio wrappers, noted as SHOOTING FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 684, dated January 7, 1957. Title page present, with credits for screenwriters Phoebe and Henry Ephron. 154 leaves, mimeograph. Pages Very Good Plus, wrapper Very Good, internally bound with three gold brads.         Theory and History: An Interpretation of Social and Economic Evolution.

New Haven: Yale University Press, 1957. First edition. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by Ludwig Von Mises on the half title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light toning to the spine. Theory and History discusses the theory of economics, the study of purposive human action, and with history, the record of the past actions of individuals. All actions are determined by ideas. Thoughts and ideas are "real things," Mises writes. "Although intangible and immaterial, they are factors in bringing about changes in the realm, of tangible and material things." Rather than rejecting the study of historical change as a "useless pastime," Mises considers it of the utmost practical importance. "History looks backward into the past, but the lesson it teaches concerns things to come."
