A FAREWELL TO ARMS (Original 1957 custom-bound final draft film script inscribed by David O Selznick to his son L Jeffrey Selznick)

Los Angeles: Selznick Company, 1957. Hemingway, Ernest. A FAREWELL TO ARMS. Los Angeles: Selznick Studios, 1957. Original studio-mimeographed 173pp. final draft screenplay, a dark-red leather-bound monogrammed presentation copy given by producer David O. Selznick to his son L. Jeffrey Selznick (1932-1997) who served as 2nd Assistant Director on the 1957 Charles Vidor adaptation of Hemingway's famous novel. "For Jeff, this souvenir of our first creative collaboration - Dad, 1957." Ben Hecht wrote the screenplay to A FAREWELL TO ARMS which turned out to be Selznick's last major film production after a legendary career which included adaptations of GONE WITH THE WIND and REBECCA, both of which won Best Picture Oscars. Jeffrey Selznick himself had a long career in show biz, both as director and producer. The attractive gold-ruled leather is a little scuffed but has not faded and retains eye appeal. An intimate association, and an exciting and unique item for the Hemingway collector.. Signed. Decorative Boards. Near Fine.

        On the Road

New York: Viking, (1957). The tiniest of spots to the front board, else a sharp, fine copy with vibrant top stain, in as close to a fine jacket as I have seen, itself with a tiny corresponding spot at the verso, a hint of wear to the spine head and front flap fold, and a few tiny handling creases. There might be a nicer copy out there, but I haven't seen it.. First Edition. Octavo. The seminal novel, travelogue, blueprint, and treatise of the Beat movement in American literature; not to mention the defining book of its era.

        Autograph letter signed.

Tel Aviv, 14. XII. 1957. - 8vo. 2 pp. To Jewish Swiss-Austrian translator, feature writer, and at one time assistant to Max Reinhardt, Fritz Bondy (1888-1980), thanking for making the acquaitance with the Milich couple possible, for sending him his book on Lady Hamilton, whom Brod had always admired in his "mature youth", "and whom I had intended to celebrate as the heroine in a novel; only in the sense of 'Tosca': 'a heroine of love' [.] That I had success in America with my Jesus novel 'The Master' may be already known to you. You will stand above the toil of translating the book into German [.] The Tschudy publishing house asked me to send you my new Kafka book [.]". Brod concludes with thoughts an present day Israel and writer Arthur Koestler. "You think too highly of Koestler. He is thoroughly without a heart. And without heart, one realizes nothing. The state of Israel cannot exist without the Jews in the Diaspora, neither can the Diaspora survive without the state of Israel. History, which usually doesn't repeat itself, makes an exception here for a change and presents up with a new edition of Philo of Alexandria's times [.]" (transl.). - With stamped address.

The rare second issue of Wallace Berman's periodical. 'Berman's hand-printed, personally distributed literary journal, Semina, stands as an iconic document of its time... an eccentric and lyrical primer of the early counterculture, assembled against the grain of conformist Eisenhower-era America, it circumscribes a world of self-exploration, cultural alienation, esthetic indulgence, communal comforts, and spiritual trancendence'--Michael Duncan, Semina Culture, p. 9. Most of the poems are printed letterpress, in a variety of typefaces. The writers represented include Charles Bukowski ('Mine'), Herman Hesse, Paul Eluard, Jean Cocteau, Michael (as Mike) McClure, Zack Walsh, J.B. May, Charles Baudelaire, Lynn Trocchi, and Pantale Xantos (a pseudonym of Berman). The images include two reproductions of photographs by Berman of Robert Alexander shooting heroin, manipulated photographs by Lewis Carroll, and Walter Hopps' image of a dead shark. The cover is a portrait of Suzi Hicks by Charles Brittin. See Duncan and McKenna, Semina Culture: Wallace Berman and His Circle, pp. 52-54.       Milan: Movimento Arte Nucleare, 1957. 1st. Original Wraps. Collectible; Very Good. The 1957 Arte Nucleare manifesto (the second one issued following the original 1952 manifesto). Essentially a triptych, with one thick cardboard sheet folded in three. On the front side, the manifesto is printed with a dark backdrop in Italian, French and English. On the flip side, to a light green/gray backdrop, the manifesto is once again artfully printed. Sandwiching the cardboard manifesto is printed, light-blue onion-skin paper, which serves as both the title and copyright page. Both the onion-skin title/copyright page and the card manifesto are bright and VG+, with just a bit of creasing at their bases. A significant piece, ephemeral and uncommon.

        From Russia, With Love

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1957. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine and revolver and rose motif to front board in metallic red and silver. With the dust jacket. Some spotting to contents, rear board lightly creased, very good in the little worn dust jacket. First edition, first impression. With the author's signed presentation inscription to the front free endpaper, "To R. Singleton-Ward In (I hope) Gratitude. Ian Fleming 1957". The recipient was the writer and physiotherapist Richard Singleton-Ward. The anticipation of gratitude expressed in the inscription is most likely in anticipation of a successful chiropractic treatment but it is perhaps no coincidence that Fleming included a quite detailed description of such therapies in Thunderball on which he was working at that time. Presentation copies of From Russia With Love are very scarce indeed.

Spine rolled, edges and endpapers foxed and spotted. A very good copy in the lightly toned and foxed jacket, with some small chips to extremities. First edition, first impression.
