        Eloise in Paris.

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1957. First edition. Quarto, original cloth. Signed by the illustrator, Hilary Knight on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light wear to the spine extremities. Eloise in Paris was first published in 1957, the second of the Eloise quartet, and an immediate bestseller. Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight traveled to Paris to research the book, and the illustrations are dotted with the celebrities they knew there: Richard Avedon takes Eloise's passport photograph; Christian Dior prods her tummy, while his young assistant, Yves Saint Laurent, looks on; Lena Horne sits at an outdoor café.

New York: Random House, 1957. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Ayn Rand on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket with 10/57 on the front flap. By 1984 more than five million copies of Atlas Shrugged had been sold, and in a 1991 Library of Congress survey Americans named it second only to the Bible as the book that had most influenced their lives. A very sharp example copy of this landmark work. The theme of Atlas Shrugged, as Rand described it, is "the role of man's mind in existence." The book explores a number of philosophical themes that Rand would subsequently develop into the philosophy of Objectivism.         A View From The Bridge (Signed By The Author)

The First UK printing published by Cresset Press in 1957.The BOOK is in near FINE condition.Mild offsetting to the end papers with a little spotting to the text block.Red cloth clean with sharp corners and bright gilt lettering.Free from inscriptions, erasures and markings. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near FINE condition.A little edge wear to the spine ends with a little rubbing at the rear upper spine fold.Small closed tear to the front upper spine fold.Colouring to the spine remains bright.Rear cover remains remarkably clean for its age.The wrapper looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been SIGNED by Arthur Miller to the half title (as was his custom). A View from the Bridge is a play by Pulitzer Prize winning american playwright Arthur Miller, first staged on September 29, 1955 as a one-act verse drama with A Memory of Two Mondays at the Coronet Theatre on Broadway. The play was unsuccessful and Miller subsequently revised the play to contain two acts; this version is the one with which audiences are most familiar today. The two-act version premièred in the New Watergate theatre club in London's West End under the direction of Peter Brook on October 11, 1956. The play is set in 1950s America, in an Italian American neighborhood near the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. It employs a chorus and narrator in the character of Alfieri. Eddie, the tragic protagonist, has an improper love of, and almost obsession with, Catherine.Miller's interest in writing about the world of the New York docks originated with an unproduced screenplay that he developed with Elia Kazan in the early 1950s (entitled The Hook) that addressed corruption on the Brooklyn docks.Kazan later directed 'On the Waterfront', which dealt with the same subject.Miller said that he heard the basic account that developed into the plot of 'A View from the Bridge' from a lawyer who worked with longshoremen, who related it to him as a true story. The 2015 London revival of this play landed two Laurence Olivier Awards and a transfer to Broadway.Very scarce to find as a signed title.Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.

New York: Spiral Press, 1957. 1st edition, original illustrated paperwraps (as issued). Published as Frost's Christmas greeting for 1957, with a new poem by Frost and wood engravings by Leonard Baskin. (Crane B29.) The present copy bears the author's (Robert Frost) personal imprint. On the present copy, Frost has personally changed the title by drawing a line through the word "My" and writing above "The" in blue fountain pen ink. Additionally, Frost has signed his name in full along the bottom of the title page using the same ink. Frost generally did not sign his Christmas cards, but would occasionally initial "R.F." to personalize. It is very scarce to see his name signed in full as it appears on the present offering.         Fin de partie. Suivi de Acte sans paroles.

Les Éditions des Minuits,, Paris, 1957 - Paris, Les Éditions des Minuits, 1957. 122 Seiten, 3 Bll. Original-Broschur. Jahrhundert.

        Atlas Shrugged

New York: Random House, 1957. First edition. Near Fine/Very Good. A Near Fine copy of the book with a contemporary gift inscription on the front end paper and the spine label a trifle rubbed, otherwise in excellent condition. In a Very Good dust jacket with a small chip and a one inch tear at the base of the spine, repair on the verso with tape. A few other little tears, without loss and a crease on the rear flap, otherwise a fairly bright, unfaded example. The jacket retains the critical $6.95 and 10/57 date code, essential for the first issue jacket. Rand's magnum opus, where she develops her objectivist theory and explores the question, "what if society's genius goes on strike?" Rand considered the book "not about the murder of man's body, but about the murder and rebirth of man's spirit." "Atlas Shrugged" has remained one of the most popular and influential books written in the twentieth century; one survey in 1991 finding it second only to the Bible in having the greatest impact upon its readers. The book would also place first on Modern Library Reader's Poll of the Top 100 novels of the 20th century. "...the reader will stay with this strange world, borne along by its story and eloquent flow of ideas." (Contemporary Newsweek Review). Near Fine in Very Good. dust jacket.

Hitchcock (First French Edition, Signed by Alfred Hitchcock)

Paris: Editions Universitaires, 1957. First French Edition. True first edition, preceding the American by nearly 20 years. INSCRIBED by Alfred Hitchcock on the half-title page ("To Peter, Alfred Hitchcock") followed by a large drawing of his well-known self-caricature. Eric Rohmer and Claude Chabrol wrote this book near the beginning of their respective careers, and would both go on to become highly individual and respected filmmakers in their own right. A classic study of Hitchcock's early-to-mid career films, one of the most important books on cinema printed in the twentieth century. A wonderful section of high-resolution stills from the Hitchcock films discussed ends the book, the last being the famous photo of Hitchcock crossing at the top of a steep stone stairway, from "I Confess." Very Good plus in photo illustrated wrappers, with a small tear at one corner of the crown. The only copy signed by Hitchcock we have ever encountered.

A FAREWELL TO ARMS (Original 1957 custom-bound final draft film script inscribed by David O Selznick to his son L Jeffrey Selznick)

Los Angeles: Selznick Company, 1957. Hemingway, Ernest. A FAREWELL TO ARMS. Los Angeles: Selznick Studios, 1957. Original studio-mimeographed 173pp. final draft screenplay, a dark-red leather-bound monogrammed presentation copy given by producer David O. Selznick to his son L. Jeffrey Selznick (1932-1997) who served as 2nd Assistant Director on the 1957 Charles Vidor adaptation of Hemingway's famous novel. "For Jeff, this souvenir of our first creative collaboration - Dad, 1957." Ben Hecht wrote the screenplay to A FAREWELL TO ARMS which turned out to be Selznick's last major film production after a legendary career which included adaptations of GONE WITH THE WIND and REBECCA, both of which won Best Picture Oscars. Jeffrey Selznick himself had a long career in show biz, both as director and producer. The attractive gold-ruled leather is a little scuffed but has not faded and retains eye appeal. An intimate association, and an exciting and unique item for the Hemingway collector.. Signed. Decorative Boards. Near Fine.

        On the Road

New York: Viking, (1957). The tiniest of spots to the front board, else a sharp, fine copy with vibrant top stain, in as close to a fine jacket as I have seen, itself with a tiny corresponding spot at the verso, a hint of wear to the spine head and front flap fold, and a few tiny handling creases. There might be a nicer copy out there, but I haven't seen it.. First Edition. Octavo. The seminal novel, travelogue, blueprint, and treatise of the Beat movement in American literature; not to mention the defining book of its era.

        Autograph letter signed.

Tel Aviv, 14. XII. 1957. - 8vo. 2 pp. To Jewish Swiss-Austrian translator, feature writer, and at one time assistant to Max Reinhardt, Fritz Bondy (1888-1980), thanking for making the acquaitance with the Milich couple possible, for sending him his book on Lady Hamilton, whom Brod had always admired in his "mature youth", "and whom I had intended to celebrate as the heroine in a novel; only in the sense of 'Tosca': 'a heroine of love' [.] That I had success in America with my Jesus novel 'The Master' may be already known to you. You will stand above the toil of translating the book into German [.] The Tschudy publishing house asked me to send you my new Kafka book [.]". Brod concludes with thoughts an present day Israel and writer Arthur Koestler. "You think too highly of Koestler. He is thoroughly without a heart. And without heart, one realizes nothing. The state of Israel cannot exist without the Jews in the Diaspora, neither can the Diaspora survive without the state of Israel. History, which usually doesn't repeat itself, makes an exception here for a change and presents up with a new edition of Philo of Alexandria's times [.]" (transl.). - With stamped address.
