The Incredible Shrinking Man (Collection of 3 photographs from the 1957 film)

Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1957. Collection of three striking vintage black-and-white still photographs from the 1957 US film. The stills demonstrate the extraordinary sets constructed and employed in the making of the picture, at a time when the special effects needed to visualize the world of a man reduced to being only a few inches were essentially nonexistent. Especially intriguing are two shots, one a candid shot of the film's leads, Grant Williams and Randy Stuart, hanging around on the oversize set, the other a shot of Williams dragging a pair of scissors six times his size up a set of equally oversize concrete steps. A landmark science fiction film, adapted by Matheson from his own novel, about a man who begin shrinking after being exposed to a strange mist. 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Fine condition, with scene descriptions tipped on to the verso of eight of the nine stills. National Film Registry. Complete collation details available on request.

Manuscript annotations on his entry in Who's Who in Art (1958)

London: 1957. 1 page 8 x 10 inches. Manuscript annotations on his entry for the 9th edition of Who's Who in Art (1958), most likely to mislead the publisher, claiming he was born in 1924 and not 1926 and that he had abandoned art to grow "soft fruit", that he studied art in Moscow and not in London and that he signs his work "Bugger." Provenance: From a collection of letters and papers amassed by illustrator and painter Geoffrey Robinson during his years as a publisher with Rockliff, John Baker, Maclaren, et al. from TFP: "John Peter Berger is an English painter, art critic, essayist, prose writer and a fiction writer. His fictional work on the alienation of the English urban life, sociological writings on the migrant workers who left behind isolated rural communities after they turned to the contemporary economic lifestyle and fictional work on European farmers who are now displaced economically and politically has made him into an intellectually stimulating writer as well as a politically controversial one."

Hitchcock (First French Edition, inscribed by Rohmer and Chabrol)

Editions Universitaires, Paris 1957 - First French Edition, preceding the American by nearly 20 years. INSCRIBED on the half title page by Chabrol and Rohmer: "About a man who likes coffee, brandy, and cigars / vos confrères du Cahiers du Cinema / Chabrol / Eric Rohmer." Only the second copy we have seen signed by both authors, who in the years that followed would become flagship directors of the French New Wave. Also laid in is a small publisher's prospectus for this title, with a blurb and information about upcoming titles in the same series on Rene Clair, King Vidor and Eric von Stroheim. Eric Rohmer and Claude Chabrol wrote this book near the beginning of their respective careers, and would both go on to become highly individual and respected filmmakers in their own right. A classic study of Hitchcock's early-to-mid career films, one of the most important books on cinema printed in the twentieth century. A wonderful section of high-resolution stills from the Hitchcock films discussed ends the book, the last being the famous photo of Hitchcock crossing at the top of a steep stone stairway, from "I Confess." Very Good plus in wrappers. Bruise to the upper corner of the rear wrapper, with light rubbing to the edges. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

"Theron" sailed full speed ahead off coast of Antarctica. The Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition was the first overland crossing of Antarctica, succeeding in the 1950's what Sir Ernest Shackleton had attempted to do in his ill-fated expedition in 1914-1917. British Explorer Vivian Fuchs and New Zealander Edmund Hilary led the expedition. Previous to this expedition, George Lowe had been an important member of the the 1953 British expedition led by John Hunt that conquered Everest. For the Trans-Antarctic expedition, Lowe joined the 12-man party of the expedition leader, the British explorer Vivian Fuchs, which set out from Shackleton Base on one side of the continent, while Hillary led the support party from the Scott Base on the other side dropping supplies and establishing depots. Fuchs relied on Lowe's expertise to spot crevasses that were, Lowe later noted, "wider, deeper and harder to detect" than any he had previously encountered, and which posed a mortal threat to the tractors, dog-teams and snowmobiles they used to get around. In the event Hillary reached the Pole first, on January 3 1958. The teams met when Fuchs arrived on January 19, but while Hillary flew out, Fuchs continued on overland and arrived at Scott Base on March 2 after a journey of 2,158 miles. With other members of the Trans-Antarctic Expedition, Lowe received in 1958 the Polar Medal (with Antarctic clasp). He was also commemorated in Mount Lowe, a 3,000ft peak in the Shackleton Range.
