Sunset Blvd [Boulevard] [Bulwar Zachodzacego Slonca] (Original Polish poster)

Warsaw: Dom Slowa Polskiego, 1957. Original Polish one sheet for the 1950 film "Sunset Boulevard," directed by Billy Wilder and starring Gloria Swanson, William Holden, and Erich von Stroheim, released there in 1957 as "Bulwar Zachodzacego Slonca." The poster, with it's striking image of Gloria Swanson, was designed by Waldemar Swierzy, one of the foremost artists working during the Golden Age of Polish poster design, a period during the 50's and 60s, where, far removed from the constraints of Hollywood and supported directly by the state through The School of Polish Posters, artists were given free reign with their designs, creating some of the most radical and breathtaking commercial art of the twentieth century. Polish posters, and Swierzy in particular, have been the subject of numerous exhibitions in both Europe and the US in recent years. This poster in particular is considered one of the most important and sought-after examples of all the great mid-century Polish film posters. Bright, Near Fine condition, with subtle restoration and repair. 24.5" x 35" inches, linen backed and rolled. Not to be confused with the late 1980s reissue, often mistakenly sold as the original, this is the true 1957 issue, in the correct shades of red and blue. National Film Registry. Hardy, The BFI Companion to Crime, p. 315. Selby (1984), p. 408. Silver, p. 288. Spicer, p. 420.

Autograph manuscript leaf from Stride Toward Freedom

1957 - KING Jr., Martin Luther. Autograph manuscript leaf from Stride Toward Freedom. Montgomery, Alabama, circa 1957. One leaf of Montgomery Improvement Association letterhead, measuring 8-1/2 by 11 inches, inscribed in pencil on the verso. With a first edition of Stride Toward Freedom. Housed together in custom chemise and a clamshell box. $19,500.Exceptional original autograph manuscript leaf entirely in Martin Luther King Jr.'s hand for his book Stride Toward Freedom, discussing the natural relationship between the Labor movement and the Civil Rights Movement.King's first book presented a full and personal account of the bus strike in Montgomery, Alabama. Sparked by Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her seat to a white man, it was the first successful large-scale application of non-violent resistance to segregation in the United States. This leaf, from a late draft of the work, reads: ".of whom have been active in white citizens councils. The existence of these conditions within the ranks of labor reveals that the job is a continuing one. The AFL-CIO must use all of the powerful forces at its command to enforce the principles it has professed. Labor leaders must continue to recognize that labor has a great stake in the struggle for civil rights, if only because the forces that are anti-Negro are usually anti-labor too. The current attacks on organized labor because of the misdeed of a few malefactors should not blind us to to labor's essential role in the present crisis." These words appear virtually unchanged on pages 204-05 in Chapter XI, titled "Where Do We Go From Here?""also the title of King's last work. (The sentences immediately preceding these in the final work are "The AFL-CIO drive to organize the South has been virtually abandoned because of the massive resistance of a significant portion of the organized labor oligarchy, many of whom have been active in white citizen's councils." The sentence after it is "The church too must face its historic obligation in the crisis.") That King should direct his attention to the labor movement is not in the least surprising: the March of Washington in 1963 began as a protest from the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, and one of the movement's main strategists was labor organizer Bayard Rustin. Indeed, in his later years, King increasingly saw his struggle as one for greater economic justice for all; King's assassination in 1968 occurred during the bitter Memphis Sanitation Worker's Strike, with which he was centrally involved. With eight pages of black-and-white photographs. Included with this leaf is a copy of the first edition of Stride Toward Freedom. Blockson 4119. An extraordinary Martin Luther King Jr. autograph manuscript with exceptional content. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Contract signed

1957 - FAULKNER, William. Typed contract signed. Beverly Hills: Twentieth Century-Fox, March 22, 1957. Eleven pages (contract) and one page of Notary's witness, with single rider on overslip on page 7. $18,500.Original typed movie contract between William Faulkner and 20th Century-Fox for the rights to The Sound and the Fury, signed by Faulkner.27 years after the publication of Faulkner's geat novel by Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, Hollywood was clearly interested in filming Faulkner's daring, controversial, and experimental novel. In this document Faulkner agreed to assign the movie rights to Twentieth Century Fox for a period of seven years. In 1959, Fox's movie The Sound and the Fury""which can only be called a loose adaptation of Faulkner's novel""was released, starring Joanne Wooward as Quentin Compson, and Yul Brynner as Jason. Interestingly, the contract specifically mention prior agreements ("of no further force or effect") between Faulkner and Columbia Pictures in 1955. Holed punched in left margin.         Kenya Diary 1902-1906

Oliver & Boyd, Edinburg 1957 - 347 pp, ill. A vivid picture of the life of a young officer in Kenya at a time when settlers were just beginning to arrive in the country that was still inhabited by primitive tribes and wild animals. Col. Meinertzhagen servied with the KAR (King's African Rifles), was responsible for the founding of Nyeri and spent much time in the Nandi country. He met with many well known political men as well as with the noted slave trader Tippo Tib. Here is a man who knew how to deal ruthlessly with the situations that presented themselves, but who also understood the African native. Scarce and sought after. A fine copy in near fine jacket. One of the nicest we've ever seen. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Kenya Diary, 1902-1906

Oliver and Boyd, Edinburgh; (1957) - Octavo. 347pages, illustrations. A fine copy of one of the most fascinating accounts of a member of British aristocracy whose horrendous love of killing even shocked his contemporaries though the British ruling class considered them necessary. He was commissioned in the Royal Fusiliers in 1899 and served in India but in 1902 became a part of the King's African Rifles in Kenya where he was a major part of the three punitive expeditions which are described in often in bloody detail. While he enjoyed hunting, he took pleasure in murdering the Africans of Kenya which he saw as merely another aspect of hunting. When he came upon a Kikuyu village he gave orders that every living thing except child should be killed "without mercy". When a baboon murdered his pet terrier he murdered every baboon within the area to "teach them a lesson". In spite of his murder of the Laibon, the leader of the Nandi, against the wishes of the African administrators, he was given the Victoria Cross. The diary seldom has been preserved in such fine condition since it was readable for those who took delight in the carefully described day-to-day accounts of his murders of the peoples of Kenya. In spite of its horror to the sensitive reader, his personal account of his meetings with the slave raider Tippoo Tib and the major architects of the British exploitation of Kenya remains one of the most important accounts of those violent years. Bound in brown cloth, spine lettering gilt, one corner bumped, in beautiful unclipped pictorial dust jacket showing only very minute wear.

The internal non-visible side is foxed. Overall, an attractive jacket. Miller entered into the writer's circle with Tropic of Cancer, which still proves to be Miller's most famous work. Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn depict Miller's lives and loves as an expatriate in Paris. They were first published in France by Jack Kahane at Obelisk Press in the mid-thirties. When the works were brought to the United States, they sparked a thirty year censorship debate that was eventually won by Miller. Inscribed by Miller in the year of publication on the front free endsheet. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        From Russia, With Love

London: Jonathan Cape, 1957 First edition, first impression of the fifth novel in the James Bond series. Publisher's black cloth, with a revolver and rose illustration to the front board in metallic silver and red, lettered in silver; in the original pictorial dust jacket designed by Richard Chopping, with an illustration of a Smith & Wesson revolver with a rose to the front panel, lettered in black. Near fine, with a hint of light rubbing to the spine, else bright and clean; price-clipped dust jacket, with a few minor chips and some light offsetting to the spine ends, some rubbing to the folds, bright and unfaded spine, light soiling to the otherwise clean wrappers. Overall, a very fresh and sturdy copy. Gilbert A5a 1.1 From Russia with Love has an archetypal Cold War plotline in which the democratic West must defend itself from the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. In this novel, Bond faces SMERSH, the Russian counterintelligence agency whose acronymic name stems from the Russian phrase "Death to Spies!" SMERSH seeks to undermine the British intelligence service by killing one of their 00 agents, and they have chosen James Bond as their target victim. From Russia with Love introduces two of the most memorable female Russian spies: the glamorous seductress Tatiana Romanova, who baited womanizer 007 into SMERSH'S clutches, and Rosa Klebb, the Head of SMERSH's department of operations. Klebb possesses one of the more unique weapons in the Bond series: poison-dipped daggers that shoot out from her shoes. From Russia with Love is largely considered to mark the turning point in Fleming's career as a successful writer.. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        Kenya Diary, 1902-1906

Edinburgh; (1957): Oliver and Boyd. Octavo.
