        How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Random House, New York 1957 - Dr. Seuss' famous Christmas story. Book Near Fine with soiling to the inner board edges, otherwise unmarked and very attractive. First issue dust jacket is price-clipped, but has 14 titles on rear flap and advertises "The Cat in the Hat" at $2.00 on the rear panel. Jacket also Near Fine with a touch of wear at the spine ends and a short (half inch) closed tear at the crown. A much nicer example than typically encountered. Named one of the Top 100 Picture Books of all time by "School Library Journal," it's the time-honored story of discovering the true joy of Christmas. Considered one of his best, Dr. Seuss wrote the book in 1957 and managed to complete in it in only a few weeks, with his wife acting as editor. The book would be adapted into a fondly remembered television special in 1966 and a feature film in 2000. "His peculiar and original genius in line and word is always the same, yet, so rich are the variations he plays on his themes, always fresh and amusing." (Contemporary New York Herald Tribune Review). Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition]

Autograph Letter Mentioning Lady Be Good, Foggy Day and Funny Face

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Autograph letter from the American lyricist dated April 22, 1957 to a Miss [Madge] Rogers, mentioning the Gershwin brothers' 1924 musical Lady Be Good, their song A Foggy Day, and the new Audrey Hepburn film Funny Face, featuring several Gershwin songs. Writing on his Beverly Hills letterhead, Gershwin also mentions the ongoing renovation of his house there.  2pp. (recto/verso). In fine condition and sold together with the original transmissal envelope.<br>Text, in part: "Thank you for the photographs of your charming town; also for the interesting review of 'Lady Be Good.' I'd heard vaguely that a company had revived that show but have had no official confirmation. However, when you tell me they've had difficulty finding a London theatre, I imagine it wasn't too commercial a project and the show has probably closed by now - although I hope, of course, that it's still around somewhere... I'm surprised that 'A Foggy Day' is rarely, if ever, played - since you say you've never heard it. There have been many recordings. As for 'Funny Face': The film doesn't use the original story (just as well) but does include six of our songs. It received unanimously good notices in New York and is a big hit there. I imagine London will see it shortly and should you get to see it, I'm sure you'll find it enjoyable."

The Rank Organization, London 1957 - Original British quad poster for the 1957 British film noirA low budget British film noir that brought Rod Steiger across the ocean in order to put his formidable character acting skills into what became a critically praised film.         The Hawk in the Rain.

New York: Harper & Brothers,, 1957. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles gilt to spine. With the dust jacket. The gatherings slightly loosened at the cords, the jacket tanned at the spine, but an excellent copy. First US edition, first printing, presentation copy of Hughes's first book inscribed to the poet and actress Isabella Gardner on the title page, "To Isabella Gardner with good wishes Ted Hughes." Gardner (1915-1981) was the Massachusetts-born great-niece of the important Boston art collector Isabella Stuart Gardner (1840-1924) and the cousin of the poet Robert Lowell. She studied acting at the Leighton Rollins School of Acting and the Embassy School of Acting in London, before moving to Chicago, where she edited the Poetry magazine from 1952 to 1956 under Karl Shapiro. Her fourth husband was the poet Allen Tate. She published four poetry collections in her lifetime, Birthdays from the Ocean (1955), The Looking Glass (1961), West of Childhood (1965) and That Was Then (1980). Here biography, Not at All What Once is used To: The Life and Time of Isabella Gardner, by Marian Janssen, was published in 2010. Sylvia Plath herself is noted to have considered Gardner a rival to the title "Poetess of America" (Journals, ed. Hughes & McCullough, p.211). Somewhat suggestively, Hughes has added, in pencil, his address while staying in Boston to the rear free endpaper, "Ted Hughes, Suite 61, 9 Willow St, Boston 8 -".
