Il Dottor Zivago; [with:] Doctor Zhivago [in Cyrillic].

Milan: Feltrinelli Editore,, 1957 & [1959]. 2 volumes, octavo. Original pale green boards, titles to spines and front boards in black. With the dust jackets. Il Dottor Zivago with scarce yellow wraparound band, torn into two pieces and loosely inserted. An excellent, bright set. Hinges of Il Dottor Zivago split but holding (not affecting endpapers but gauze visible at gutter of title page and final page of text); in the jacket with laminate lifting slightly; front hinge of Russian edition split but holding (not affecting front endpaper but gauze visible at gutter of title page); in the bright jacket with some nicks and rubbing to spine ends. The first edition of Pasternak's masterpiece and the third edition in Russian (the first published by Feltrinelli). Doctor Zhivago was deemed unfit for publication within the Soviet Union due to certain passages that were perceived as anti-Soviet. It was therefore first published in Italian by Feltrinelli in 1957 after Pasternak signed a contract with him on 30 June 1956, granting the Italian publisher the copyright for translation. The history of the book's publication in Russian is somewhat tangled: the first edition in Russian was printed by the Dutch publisher Mouton without Feltrinelli's permission, as part of a covert CIA publishing and propaganda program. In January 1958 the CIA accepted through British Intelligence microfilm copies of the Russian manuscript which Feltrinelli had received from Pasternak; the book was ready for distribution by early September 1958. Feltrinelli, with Pasternak's support, had discussed the publication of a Russian edition in 1957 in collaboration with Mouton, but had not signed a contract. Unaware of the CIA's involvement, Feltrinelli saw Mouton's publication as outright fraud and considered legal action, though he later settled. A planned US edition in Russian was to be likewise published without acknowledgement of Feltrinelli's copyright. However, after the legal furore surrounding the publication of the Dutch edition, that decision was reversed, and the US edition, published in Michigan, was subsequently published with Feltrinelli's full consent and collaboration. Feltrinelli intended to publish his Russian edition concurrently with the US publication, but due to printing delays his book was not published in Italy until four months after it appeared in the US. The book earned Pasternak the Nobel Prize for literature. The award was offered in mid-October 1958, but before the end of the month, under intense pressure from the Soviet authorities, Pasternak was forced to reject it.

        DANDELION WINE

Garden City: Doubleday, 1957. Canary yellow cloth. Very, very faint darkening along endsheet gutters, otherwise a fine copy in near fine dust jacket with a hint of tanning to spine and edges, and minor dust soiling to the lower panel. First edition of this central work in the Bradbury canon, and in many ways, a work which is in a class by itself for its generation. "A bucolic evocation of Bradbury's youth through rose-colored glasses. Though not strictly fantastic, this poetic blend of nostalgia and ever-so- slightly macabre happenings defines the author's view of the past as a country of the bizarre and the wonderful, and is central to Bradbury's fantasy world" - Barron.         L'exile et le royaume [Exile and the Kingdom]

Paris: Gallimard. First edition. original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF CAMUS'S MAJOR WORKS, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY CAMUS on half-title: ''a Madame Francoise Perret / en [???] hommage / Albert Camus''. "The loneliness of the individual, the sense of foreigners in one's own land and of isolation in one's own society, is the underlying theme of the six short stories that make up Camus's Exile and the Kingdom (1957), in which 'exile' is treated in a variety of ways depending on whether it is geographical or moral in character. In this mature work, Camus appears for the most part to have left behind the darkness and violence of the war and postwar years, and to acknowledge at least a possibility of transcending the crippling limitations of everyday life…" (Alba Amoia, "Albert Camus's 'Exile' and 'The Kingdom'). The recipient, Francoise Perret (1919-1986), was an influential Swiss journalist and politician. First edition, first printing ("4 Mars 1957"), "service de press" issue. Paris: Gallimard, 1957. Octavo, original wrappers; glassine; custom box. Some toning to spine, otherwise fine. Rare signed and inscribed.

Gr. 8 (25 x 18 cm). Orig.-Leinenbände mit Goldprägung und Original-Schutzumschlag in Orig.-Pappschubern. [Hardcover / fest gebunden]. (...)" - Mit einigen Bleistiftanstreichungen in Band 1 und 7. - Insgesamt nahezu tadellos erhaltenes Exemplar.
