A History of the English Speaking Peoples. Volume I: The Birth of Britain; Volume II: The New World; Volume III: The Age of Revolution

New York: Dodd, Mead, 1957. First American Editions. 3 vols. 8vo. Each in a publisher's presentation binding of full blue morocco, upper covers with red morocco onlay stamped gilt lion rampant, spines lettered in gilt, each with 2 ornaments of red and gilt morocco onlays, turn-ins with double gilt fillets, t.e.g., by the Kingsport Press. Spines of first two volumes slightly faded. In original slipcases. First American Editions. 3 vols. 8vo. In Unique Presentation Bindings. These unique (as far as is known) copies of the First American Editions of Churchill's History were presented to the president of the Book-of-the-Month Club. The fact the the publisher did not present a copy of the fourth and final volume is not surprising: whereas the early volumes of the series were enormously successful, by the time the final volume was published (1958), interest had considerably dropped. According to Dodd, Volume I was published simultaneously in America (April 23, 1956); of Volume II , the English edition came out on Nov. 26, 1956, the American edition Dec. 3, 1956; of Volume III, the American edition on Sept. 23, 1957, appears to have preceded the English (on Oct. 14, 1957); oddly enough Dodds mentions no American edition of volume IV. Again, printings were enormous. Cohen, A267.3 (I); A267.3 (II); A267.3 (III)

4 autograph letters signed (one of which with a full-page drawing) and 1 autograph picture postcard signed.

Probably Villeneuve, 1955 to 1957. - 8vo and oblong 8vo. Altogether 8 pp. on 5 ff. With 4 autogr. envelopes. Intimate, longing missives to Antonia Mangelmann, probably a former model or student of Kokoschka's at his Salzburg Summer Academy: "You have proven to me a dedication, truly limitless for a mother, in this, your possibly finest letter; do not be angry if the Swan proves human in his desire to embrace you in thanks for all that you keep so close to my imagination that I was overjoyed all day, so very happy. How sweet are your two hearts, and how beautiful your two bodies, such harmony of earthly forms and divine souls was known only to Greek antiquity, and I confess frankly that I return to Salzburg on your behalf alone. To have to leave such wonderful sweetness! for soon I shall have to die, a fate which I find it hard to get used to! That there shall be a wall between the three of us, that the world of shadows shall remove me forever, while you and Inge strew like buds your charm and love beneath the sky, in the light of day and the star's nightly gleam, this hurts me as my love hurts me but still keeps alive / your Oskar" (translation). The reverse of this undated letter shows a sketch of three embracing persons, inscribed "for dear Antonia / variation on our theme / by OK". The persons depicted are apparently Antonia, her daughter Inge, and Kokoschka himself. - All letters with printed letterhead. Includes 11 pp. of responding letters.

        L'espèce humaine

        The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold

London: Chapman & Hall,, 1957. A Conversation Piece. Octavo. Original red cloth titled in gilt to the spine, bottom and fore edges uncut. A touch of fading to the spine. A near fine copy. First edition, large paper issue. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his friend and biographer Christopher Sykes, "Christopher with love. Look out. It might be you next. Evelyn" on the front free endpaper. Sykes first met Waugh in 1929 shortly after the collapse of Waugh's first marriage, and the pair became good friends. According to Waugh's son Auberon, he was chosen to be the author's official biographer "because he was the only one of Waugh's obituarists who caught something of the gaiety as well as the recklessness of the man" (ODNB), though his book, published in 1975, was inhibited by a respect for Waugh's widow "a decline in energy" (idem), and perhaps a delayed feeling of resentment at his friend's success.

Autograph Letter on her Calling Card, mentioning Traviata

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Autograph note to an unidentified recipient on both sides of her printed visiting card. Ca. 47 x 84 mm., with "Maria Meneghini Callas" printed to recto. One corner very slightly creased. "Dear friend â?? I am terribly sorry but Saturday is taken with my rehearsal of Traviata. Please call me and we will see each other if possible after the 6th. Thank you and best regards."<br><br><br />Maria Callas was the most famous and also the most glamorous opera singer of her time. Her fame was enhanced by her attractive physique, and her early death turned her into an almost mythical figure. Initially performing dramatic roles including most of Wagner's soprano parts, she later focused on the Italian belcanto repertory. "Of Callas's artistic pre-eminence there can be no doubt. Among her contemporaries she had the deepest comprehension of the Classical Italian style, the most musical instincts and the most intelligent approach. There was authority in all that she did on the stage and in every phrase that she uttered. Her voice, especially during the early 1950s, was in itself an impressive instrument, with its penetrating individual quality, its rich variety of colour and its great agility in florid music." (Grove Music Online)<br><br><br />Callas sang Violetta in La Traviata at the Metropolitan Opera on February 6, 1957.

        CAT IN THE HAT

      - SEUSS,DR. THE CAT IN THE HAT. NY: Random Hse. (1957). 8vo, flat paper over boards (not glazed paper), 61p., small old offset marks on endpapers and name erased from free endpaper else near fine in VG dust wrapper that has some fraying at spine ends. 1st edition of Seuss's first reader (correct binding paper) in dust wrapper with price. Illustrated in bright color throughout. The importance of this book cannot be overstated. In addition to becoming a household name, the Cat In The Hat is extremely important in the history of education and children's literature. At the same time that it was amusing, it was bringing the basic concepts of reading to tens of thousands of little children who were learning without being "taught". It was a marked departure from the boring Dick and Jane type reader. The challenge of writing an entire book using only 220 different words and making the book enjoyable was enormous. Teachers began to use this book in their classrooms and it was not long before the Cat In The Hat became an American icon. First editions of this title are extremely scarce.         Kay Thompson's Eloise In Paris Drawings by Hilary Knight - SIGNED BY THOMPSON AND KNIGHT

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1957. First edition (2nd printing). Used; Like New/Used; Like New. A rare double signed copy of Thompson's second Eloise book, with whimsical illustrations by Hilary Knight. Slim quarto, original illustrated red cloth.  Signed by the author on the title page "Kay Thompson" and some years later, by the illustrator Hilary Knight, who adds above in a darker black ink "Hilary Knight / 2000." Wear to ends of spinein the original dust jacket, with small losses to the spine ends and rear upper edge.  A very good copy of a classic title rarely found signed by both of the creators. This second Eloise book details the comic adventures of the young heroine on a trip to the French capitol, accompanied by her nanny, her faithful pug Weenie, and her turtle Skipperdee. <br style="">Maurice Sendak called Eloise a "brazen, loose-limbed little monster" and anyone who has been introduced to the eccentric 6-year-old who spends her days at large in New York's Plaza Hotel pouring water down the mail chute and managing her self-imposed responsibilities can't help but be fascinated. "Eloise's birth was unexpected. At rehearsals of her act with the Williams Brothers, Thompson [who was a professional singer] prized punctuality. Then one day she was late. In a high, childish voice that she had never used before, she made her apology. One of her co-workers said, 'Who are you, little girl?' Thompson replied, 'I am Eloise. I am six.' The others joined in the game, each assuming a juvenile identity, and it became a regular rehearsal pastime" (New York Times). That pastime became a book, with three more to follow in Thompson's lifetime. "Eloise became an alternative persona for Kay Thompson, much as the dummy Charlie McCarthy was for Edgar Bergen? [allowing] Thompson to express contrarian thoughts and ideas. Eloise took form as a lonely and whimsical child who created her own world" (Marie Brenner).<br style=""><br style="">

        O MISTÉRIO DOS PAINÉIS.

      - Volume I. O Cardeal D. Jaime de Portugal. Volume II. O 'Judeu', o seu Livro e a Crítica. Volume III. As Personagens e a Armaria. Volume IV. Os Pintores. Volume V. Os Príncipes. Últimas Páginas. Lisboa. Il Dottor Zivago; [with:] Doctor Zhivago [in Cyrillic].

Milan: Feltrinelli Editore,, 1957 & [1959]. 2 volumes, octavo. Original pale green boards, titles to spines and front boards in black. With the dust jackets. Il Dottor Zivago with scarce yellow wraparound band, torn into two pieces and loosely inserted. An excellent, bright set. Hinges of Il Dottor Zivago split but holding (not affecting endpapers but gauze visible at gutter of title page and final page of text); in the jacket with laminate lifting slightly; front hinge of Russian edition split but holding (not affecting front endpaper but gauze visible at gutter of title page); in the bright jacket with some nicks and rubbing to spine ends. The first edition of Pasternak's masterpiece and the third edition in Russian (the first published by Feltrinelli). Doctor Zhivago was deemed unfit for publication within the Soviet Union due to certain passages that were perceived as anti-Soviet. It was therefore first published in Italian by Feltrinelli in 1957 after Pasternak signed a contract with him on 30 June 1956, granting the Italian publisher the copyright for translation. The history of the book's publication in Russian is somewhat tangled: the first edition in Russian was printed by the Dutch publisher Mouton without Feltrinelli's permission, as part of a covert CIA publishing and propaganda program. In January 1958 the CIA accepted through British Intelligence microfilm copies of the Russian manuscript which Feltrinelli had received from Pasternak; the book was ready for distribution by early September 1958. Feltrinelli, with Pasternak's support, had discussed the publication of a Russian edition in 1957 in collaboration with Mouton, but had not signed a contract. Unaware of the CIA's involvement, Feltrinelli saw Mouton's publication as outright fraud and considered legal action, though he later settled. A planned US edition in Russian was to be likewise published without acknowledgement of Feltrinelli's copyright. However, after the legal furore surrounding the publication of the Dutch edition, that decision was reversed, and the US edition, published in Michigan, was subsequently published with Feltrinelli's full consent and collaboration. Feltrinelli intended to publish his Russian edition concurrently with the US publication, but due to printing delays his book was not published in Italy until four months after it appeared in the US. The book earned Pasternak the Nobel Prize for literature. The award was offered in mid-October 1958, but before the end of the month, under intense pressure from the Soviet authorities, Pasternak was forced to reject it.
