        Vada'sz Kaland (Hunting Adventure)

(Hungary), 1957. Shadow theater toy, measuring 6 by 4 1/2 inches (150 x 110 mm). Color printed cardboard proscenium with transparent acetate screen behind which a long illustrated story strip is wound in either direction using metal cranks on either end, framed in a light wood that has been stained red. The lines in the acetate screen give the appearance of movement as the strip runs through. The story, in this case, is a cartoon of a hunting trip, and the main characters appear to be Mickey Mouse and Pluto. They are shown heading into the forest with a long gun, only to be pursued by a large bear. On either end, a little character is shown pulling a curtain, signalling the beginning and the end of the vignette. This theater was produced the year following the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, which saw the country attempt widespread reforms following the death of Stalin. These were violently suppressed, and Hungary remained a satellite state of the Soviet Union until 1989. The Soviet penchant for intellectual property piracy appears to have spread to its satellite states in this case, as it seems unlikely that Disney granted permission to use the likenesses of its most famous characters. An unusual survival, and, aside from a small split to one side and a minor abrasion on the rear panel, near fine and in good working condition.

        CURSE OF THE DEMON (1957)

Columbia Pictures 1957 - Vintage original 41 x 27" (103 x 68 cm.) one sheet poster, USA. Dana Andrews, Peggy Cummins, Niall MacGinnis, Maurice Denham, Athene Seyler, dir: Jacques Tourneur; Columbia. Dana Andrews plays a skeptical American psychologist who ventures to England to attend a symposium on paranormal psychology. Because he does not believe in the power of Julian Karswell, a devil cult leader, he attempts to expose her; when he is cursed by them, he must fight for his life. Shot on location in England, including at Stonehenge (present on this poster), the film delivered dark atmosphere -- the forte of filmmaker Jacques Tourneur. Poster is folded and unrestored. This poster was never used and except for minor shelf wear, a bit of soil to the pure white background and light crease to the top left corner, the condition is exceptional. ABOUT FINE

        "Kino-Erlebnisse". Eigenh. Manuskript (Fragment). O. O. u. D., [Januar 1957].

1957. 1 S. Gr.-4to.

        A View From The Bridge.

London: The Cresset Press, 1957.. FIRST UK EDITION, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. Publisher's hardback cloth binding in printed dustjacket; a lightly used copy showing a few minor chips and toning. Attractive. Miller's interest in writing about the world of the New York docks originated with an unproduced screenplay that he developed with Elia Kazan in the early 1950s, entitled "The Hook," dealing with corruption on the Brooklyn docks (Kazan would go on to direct "On the Waterfront," which dealt with exactly the same subject).         Contract signed

1957. FAULKNER, William. Typed contract signed. Beverly Hills: Twentieth Century-Fox, March 22, 1957. Eleven pages (contract) and one page of Notary's witness, with single rider on overslip on page 7. $18,500.Original typed movie contract between William Faulkner and 20th Century-Fox for the rights to The Sound and the Fury, signed by Faulkner.27 years after the publication of FaulknerÂ’s geat novel by Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, Hollywood was clearly interested in filming FaulknerÂ’s daring, controversial, and experimental novel. In this document Faulkner agreed to assign the movie rights to Twentieth Century Fox for a period of seven years. In 1959, FoxÂ’s movie The Sound and the Fury—which can only be called a loose adaptation of FaulknerÂ’s novel—was released, starring Joanne Wooward as Quentin Compson, and Yul Brynner as Jason. Interestingly, the contract specifically mention prior agreements (“of no further force or effect”) between Faulkner and Columbia Pictures in 1955. Holed punched in left margin. A unique signed item in excellent condition.

        Atlas Shrugged

New York: Random House, 1957. FIRST EDITION OF RAND'S MASTERPIECE; AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY RAND TO HER LITERARY AGENT ANN WATKINS. Inscribed in ink on the front free endpaper: "To Ann Watkins - / - Cordially - / Ayn Rand / 12/21/61".Ann Watkins was Rand's literary agent during her long search for a publisher for The Fountainhead. Initially Watkins was enthusiastic about the quality of The Fountainhead and the prospects for publication, but "after rejection by eight publishers, Watkins's evaluation of the novel had changed, and she began to tell Rand what was wrong with it. Watkins thought the central character (Howard Roark) was 'unsympathetic.' Rand obviously disagreed... [and] after Rand dispensed with specific objections, Watkins explained that she could not give reasons for not liking the book; it was just her 'feelings.' Rand never simply let a comment like that go by, and the result was the end of their business relationship with respect to The Fountainhead."As Rand explained in her impassioned letter dismissing Watkins as her agent:"When I asked you whether you wished to continue with the novel, you told me you did not. You said that you did not want to handle the novel further because I made it impossible for you to sell it. When I asked 'Why?' you answered -- here are your exact words, Ann, I remember them because they made a deep impression on me and I'll remember them all my life -- 'Why? Why? You always ask me why. I can't answer you. I don't go by reasons, I act upon instinct.' That, Ann, was the epitaph on our relations. There was nothing I could say after that. Words are an instrument of reason and instincts are unanswerable..." (Robert Mayhew, Essays on Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead). The Fountainhead went on to become a best-seller, and it is interesting to imagine the thoughts Rand had in inscribing this copy of the first edition of her next novel, Atlas Shrugged, to the agent who had lost faith in her work.New York: Random House, 1957. Thick octavo, original green cloth, original dust jacket; custom half-morocco box. Book near-fine, dust jacket with light edgewear and a little toning to spine. A fascinating and historically important association copy. Very Good / Very Good.

1957. First Edition . Signed. FAULKNER, William. The Town. New York: Random House, (1957). Octavo, original tan cloth, original acetate dust jacket. Housed in a custom slipcase. $3000.Signed limited first edition, number 227 of 450 copies signed by Faulkner. The second novel in FaulknerÂ’s celebrated Snopes trilogy—which began with The Hamlet (1940) and ended with The Mansion (1959)—emerges as a study in contrast: while there are “lots of narrative eddies, many of them swirling with good humor,” passages such as EulaÂ’s suicide are “wrenching, and one understands why the author told Jean Stein that he had been reduced to tears while writing it. He was saying good-bye to his fantasies” (Parini, 394-96). While the book received many negative reviews, “reviewers in the main missedÂ… the grandeur of the scheme, the size of the enterprise, the attemptÂ… to write the epic not only of Yoknapatawpha but of the SouthÂ… [Faulkner] had not completely forsaken the adventurousness of his earlier work” (Karl, 959).       1957. Signed. (ARMSTRONG, Louis). (MIDDLETON, Velma). Document signed (concert program). No place: No publisher, no date [1957]. Quarto, original stiff glossy photographic wrappers, staple-bound as issued; pp. 16. $1650.Vintage concert program booklet, illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs, signed in green ink on the front cover “Satchmo, Louis Armstrong,” further signed by singer Velma Middleton at her photograph.“Louis Armstrong and but three or four others are preeminent in the history of jazz. His importance in the development of this art form has gained greater, almost universal, recognition in the years since his death as scholars and musicians reevaluate his contributions as a soloist, composer, band leader and role model. The measure of his impact on the social history of 20th-century America also seems to be greater now as he gains recognition for his contributions to the Harlem Renaissance, for his actions as a thoughtful spokesman for black Americans, as a significant writer of autobiography, as an entertainer of stature and as a singer responsible for the development of major trends in American popular and jazz singing” (ANB). “Satchmo” signed the cover of this souvenir program booklet, obtained at a September 21, 1957 concert near Sioux City, Iowa. The cover depicts the trumpeter with his horn under his arm and its case in his hand; the booklet features numerous black-and-white images of Armstrong and his fellow musicians. ArmstrongÂ’s long-time singer Velma Middleton has signed the booklet at her photograph on page [14]. Concert seating ticket laid in. Previous ownerÂ’s ink annotation to front cover, affecting neither ArmstrongÂ’s image nor signature.Interior with slight marginal soiling to page [3]. Only light soiling to wrappers.         Autograph manuscript leaf from Stride Toward Freedom

1957. First Edition . KING Jr., Martin Luther. Autograph manuscript leaf from Stride Toward Freedom. Montgomery, Alabama, circa 1957. One leaf of Montgomery Improvement Association letterhead, measuring 8-1/2 by 11 inches, inscribed in pencil on the verso. With a first edition of Stride Toward Freedom. Housed together in custom chemise and a clamshell box. $19,500.Exceptional original autograph manuscript leaf entirely in Martin Luther King Jr.'s hand for his book Stride Toward Freedom, discussing the natural relationship between the Labor movement and the Civil Rights Movement.King's first book presented a full and personal account of the bus strike in Montgomery, Alabama. Sparked by Rosa Parks' refusal to give up her seat to a white man, it was the first successful large-scale application of non-violent resistance to segregation in the United States. This leaf, from a late draft of the work, reads: ""…of whom have been active in white citizens councils. The existence of these conditions within the ranks of labor reveals that the job is a continuing one. The AFL-CIO must use all of the powerful forces at its command to enforce the principles it has professed. Labor leaders must continue to recognize that labor has a great stake in the struggle for civil rights, if only because the forces that are anti-Negro are usually anti-labor too. The current attacks on organized labor because of the misdeed of a few malefactors should not blind us to labor's essential role in the present crisis."" These words appear virtually unchanged on pages 204-05 in Chapter XI, titled ""Where Do We Go From Here?""—also the title of King's last work. (The sentences immediately preceding these in the final work are ""The AFL-CIO drive to organize the South has been virtually abandoned because of the massive resistance of a significant portion of the organized labor oligarchy, many of whom have been active in white citizen's councils."" The sentence after it is ""The church too must face its historic obligation in the crisis."") That King should direct his attention to the labor movement is not in the least surprising: the March on Washington in 1963 began as a protest by the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, and one of the movement's main strategists was labor organizer Bayard Rustin. Indeed, in his later years, King increasingly saw his struggle as one for greater economic justice for all; King's assassination in 1968 occurred during the bitter Memphis Sanitation Worker's Strike, with which he was centrally involved. Included with this leaf is a copy of the first edition of Stride Toward Freedom. With eight pages of black-and-white photographs. Blockson 4119. An extraordinary Martin Luther King Jr. autograph manuscript with exceptional content.

        Typed letter signed ("Oskar").

Frankfurt am Main, 8. X. 1957. - 4to (290 x 205 mm). 2 pp. With franked airmail envelope addressed to Emilie Schindler in Buenos Aires. In 1949, Oskar Schindler and his wife, Emilie, emigrated to Argentina and invested in a chicken and nutria farming business. However, when the business failed in 1958, Schindler left Argentina and Emilie, returning alone to Germany, where he lived until his death in 1974. This letter is written to Emilie from Germany (in German) in 1957, where Schindler had travelled to seek restitution money for his factory and equipment. In the fifth paragraph of the letter, Schindler discusses these proceedings: "My affairs have gone well, I hope in 6 weeks to be able to request the money for the object." (At the time, Schindler had hoped he could claim 2 million DM, but only received DM 46,000). From the letter, it is clear that money was a struggle, with Schindler writing: "Above all, I have no money for a coat, it will soon become quite cold, so that I must wait until the end of the month, somehow I will pull through." Details of Oskar Schindler's acquaintances are also discussed. For example, Schindler writes: "Joel Brand, about whom I wrote to you in my last letter, mentioning that he had had a heart attack, is still in the university hospital and his wife has arrived from Israel. (Brand is the benificiary and publisher of the book in the matter of Dr. Kastner, also a friend of Dr. Sedlatschek)." These men are known for their efforts in saving Hungarian Jews from deportation to concentration camps, and similarly important figures are mentioned throughout the letter. - Folded with some wrinkling. One text correction and signed in red ballpoint. Provenance: From the estate of Emilie Schindler and thence by descent. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Cat in the Hat

1957. First Edition . SEUSS, Dr. The Cat in the Hat. New York: Random House, (1957). Octavo, original pictorial paper boards, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket. $8200.First edition of this rare and important children's classic—a beautiful copy in the scarce original dust jacket.""A turning point, not only in the career of Dr. Seuss but in the reading habits of American children, occurred in the late 1950's. Inspired by a thoughtful article by John Hersey in Life magazine, entitled 'Why do Students Bog Down on the First R?,' Seuss began to address the problem, which has since entered the popular parlance as the why-Johnny-can't-read syndrome. Hersey's contention was that the schools were filled with 'pallid primers' such as Fun with Dick and Jane, featuring 'abnormally courteous, unnaturally clean boys and girls,' that real children found them uninspiring, and that many bookstores displayed more attractive alternatives, the 'jaunty juveniles' with 'strange and wonderful animals and children who behave naturally, i.e., sometimes misbehave.' Seuss' answer was The Cat in the Hat. By enhancing everyday situations with irresistible imaginary characters and telling the tales with cleverly rhymed, easily recognizable words, Seuss gave control of learning to read back to children, while providing wit, charm, comic verse, and a surprise on every page. The Cat in the Hat was so successful that Random House, publisher of all the Dr. Seuss books since 1937, created a special division, Beginner Books, with the Cat in the Hat as the logo and Dr. Seuss as president of the division"" (Dr. Seuss from Then to Now, 45). ""This extraordinary writer has done more to foster literacy in children than most because he manages to combine lunacy with sanity, fun with learning, and quality with exuberant readability"" (Joseph Connolly). First edition, with 200/200 on the inside flap of dust jacket and all other first edition points. Younger & Hirsch 7. A very nearly fine copy.
