Montreal: McGill Poetry Series,, 1956. Drawings by Freda Guttman. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine silver. With the dust jacket. Illustrated plates. Very slight rubbing to ends, a very good copy though the dust jacket split along the front joint, loss to spine ends and the upper outer corner of front panel. First edition, first printing, presentation copy of Cohen's first book, inscribed "For Gretchen and Ive, wishing you all good things, Leonard Cohen, January 1957". This collection of mostly teenage and student poetry was printed in small numbers as the first instalment of the McGill Poetry Series, edited by Cohen's professor Louis Dudek, advertised in the book as "the first venture of its kind in Canada... Its purpose is to present to the university community and the public the work of young writers at McGill of outstanding ability." Cohen dedicated himself to poetry in the first ten years of his adult life. It was only in 1967 that he moved to the United States to pursue his career as a folk singer.

The Chronicles of Narnia:] The Lion the Witch and The Wardrobe; Prince Caspian; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; The Horse and His Boy; The Magician's Nephew; The Last Battle.

London: Geoffrey Bles [and] The Bodley Head, 1950-1956 - 7 volumes, octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in full morocco, various colours, titles and pictorial centre tools to spines gilt, rule to boards gilt, twin rule to turn-ins gilt, floral endpapers, gilt edges. Housed in a dark blue leather entry slipcase. An excellent set. With colour frontispieces and black and white illustrations by Pauline Baynes. All first editions, first impressions. A complete set of the much acclaimed Narnia series. "The immediate inspiration for 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' was a series of nightmares that Lewis had had about Lions. More seriously, he was concerned to do for children what he had done for an adult readership in his science fiction trilogy. The Narnia novels are not allegorical; they are entirely in keeping with the belief, shared by Lewis and his close friend and Oxford colleague Tolkien, that stories in themselves, especially of the mythical type, can give spiritual nourishment without imparting abstract meaning. As Naomi Lewis has written, the books are 'intoxicating' to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th century author".         [Bi-weekly Newspapers]: Incomplete Run of Caisson (29 issues)

Camp Younghans, Japan: 1st Cavalry Division Artillary, 1956. Very Good. Mimeographed magazine. Stapled wrappers. 29 issues: 16-42; 44, 46, [47] (designated as Vol. 4, no. 1). Variant and irregular pagination ranging between 18 to 58 pages. The first 22 issues are crudely mimeographed and mostly illustrated with amateur drawings; the last seven are slickly printed and heavily illustrated with photographs. Age-toning, a few pages detached but they appear complete, some issues with punch holes in the upper margins, overall very good. The newspaper covers current events, new orders, camp sports, movies and music, book reviews, etc., and is heavy on sophomoric Army-themed cartoons. After service in Korea, and then as part of a blocking force to dissuade the Soviet's desire to annex Hokkeido, the 1st Cavalry Division Artillery moved to Camp Younghans, a former Japanese Army Camp near the town of Jinmachi in Yamagata Prefecture on the island of Honshu.         Zeichnungen - Drawings. (Mit einem Text von Max Bill).

Bern, Sprial Press und New York, Wittenborn and Company. (1956). (Eugen Gomringer in: Das Werk. Jahrgang 44, Heft 9, 1957).
