        The Sweet Science.

London: Victor Gollancz Limited,, 1956. Octavo. Original red cloth, gilt lettered spine. With the dust jacket. Title page cartoon by Haro. Spine of price-clipped dust jacket toned and stained, a few chips (with loss). A very good copy. First UK edition, first impression. Presentation copy from the author, inscribed on the front free endpaper: "For Ellis and Edna Stanning, Joe (A. J. ) Liebling, Nov. 12, '57". This is a collection of Liebling's pieces for The New Yorker which in 2002 was hailed by Sports Illustrated as the No.1 Sports Book of all time: "Pound-for-pound the top boxing writer of all time, Liebling is at his bare-knuckled best here, bobbing and weaving between superb reporting and evocative prose. The fistic figures depicted in this timeless collection of New Yorker essays range from champs such as Rocky Marciano and Sugar Ray Robinson to endearing palookas and eccentric cornermen on the fringes of the squared circle. Liebling's writing is efficient yet stylish, acerbic yet soft and sympatheticÂ… He leavens these flourishes with an eye for detail worthy of Henry James. The one-two combination allows him to convey how boxing can at once be so repugnant and so alluring" (Sports Illustrated, Dec. 2002).

        Profiles in Courage.

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1956. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To my favorite God-mother with love and best wishes- John Kennedy." The recipient was John Kennedy's paternal aunt and godmother Loretta Connelly. An excellent example in a near fine dust jacket with some rubbing to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Familial association copies of Profiles In Courage seldom enter the marketplace. The Pulitzer Prize-winning book was written when Kennedy was the junior senator from Massachusetts, and it served as a clarion call to every American. The inspiring accounts of eight previous heroic acts by American patriots inspired the American public to remember the courage progress requires. Now, a half-century later, it remains a classic and a relevant testament to the national spirit that celebrates the most noble of human virtues. Kennedy relates these heroisms to sketches of American politicians who have risked their careers for principle. "A man does what he must," he wrote, "in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality."

Original 1956 Signed Blueprint of Frank Lloyd Wright’s design which is today the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center in Madison, Wisconsin

n.p., 1956. 28.5" x 5". "Printed Blueprint Signed “F Ll W / 56” in brown ink in a 1” x 1” brown ink square box shaded in red pencil in the lower left, 56.5” x 18”. Two 2.75” vertical lines have been drawn in red pencil at each end of the 28.5” x 5” architectural drawing in the lower half, captioned “Elevation From Lake Monona Scale: 1/32” = 1’-0”” Lightly printed. Minor soiling and mounting traces at perimeter easily matted over. Fine condition. In 1938, Frank Lloyd Wright proposed a design for a civic auditorium which would link Lake Monona, surrounded on three sides by the city of Madison, Wisconsin, with the State Capitol building two blocks away. Wright had a summer home at Spring Green, 35 miles from Madison. It was defeated at a County Board meeting by one vote. In 1954-1955, in the postwar economic boom, Madison voters approved a bond referendum for a civic center and Wright was chosen as project architect. The original signed blueprint here offered was accomplished in 1956. The Lake Monona project was effectively destroyed the next year by a state law reducing the height of a lakefront building to 20 feet; Wright’s building would have been 60 feet high. Madison’s Mayor called the signing of the bill into law by Republican Gov. Vernon Thomson on September 21, 1957, “a regrettable insult to Wisconsin’s most renowned living citizen.” Wright said that objectors to the civic auditorium had misrepresented the facts, saying that his proposal would not have interfered with the view of Lake Monona from the street above. “From the capitol two blocks away,” explained Wright, “there would be no change whatever from the view except a great fountain of gushing water where the unconscious objectors have shown a building.”On this blueprint, viewing the civic auditorium from Lake Monona, the fountain and the Madison State Capitol building can be seen in the distance. After the 1958 elections, in January 1959, Madison-area state legislators introduced a bill which was signed by new Democratic Gov. Gaylord Nelson, repealing the 1957 law. Wright completed his last rendering shortly before his death on April 9, 1959. In 1992, Madison voters narrowly approved the transformation of Wright’s civic center into a convention facility. Construction began in 1994 and in July 1997, the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center opened, 59 years after Frank Lloyd Wright’s inception of the project. “With interiors redesigned by Taliesin architect Tony Puttnam, Monona Terrace spans ninety feet out over shimmering waters, incorporating thoroughly modern technology and amenities with the architect´s signature organic design…” (from"
