A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

London: Cassell and Company, 1956-1958.. First British editions, first printings of each of the four volumes of this set. Octavo, original cloth, 4 volumes. Near fine in the original dust jackets with light shelfwear. A very nice example of this set. "Churchill?'s last great work was published nearly 20 years after he penned its first draft in the late 1930s, just after wrapping up [the biography of] Marlborough. This enabled him to utilize the literary team he had assembled for the biography, to which he added dozens of outlines he had solicited from scholars In its final form the original single volume evolved to four, each of which was published simultaneously in Britain, the USA and Canada— a first for Churchill?'s works" (Langworth, 312).

Indian Camp (Original screenplay for an unproduced television episode of "Playwrights '56")

New York: Self published, 1956. Draft script for an unproduced episode of television series, "Playwrights '56 (1955-1956), produced by Fred Coe and based on stories by Ernest Hemingway. Written by two of the show's prominent writers, A.E. Hotchner and Sidney Carroll. A.E. Hotchner and Ernest Hemingway were friends and informal business partners, Hotchner often acting as a literary agent. The two corresponded with each other extensively throughout the 1950s, and their correspondence was collected in the 2005 book, "Dear Papa, Dear Hotch: The Correspondence of Ernest Hemingway and A.E. Hotchner, " edited by Albert J. DeFazio III, with a preface by Hotchner. Scripts for "The Battler" (season 1, episode 2) and "The Capital of the World" (unproduced) have also been seen, both based on Hemingway stories. Yul Brynner directed an adaptation of "The Capital of the World," as part of the "Omnibus" TV series in 1953. Carroll continued to write screenplays for films into the 1960s, including "The Hustler" (1961) and "Gambit" (1966), while Hotchner's only film credits include the screenplay for "Hemingway's Adventures of a Young Man" (1962), and the source memoir for "King of the Hill" (1993), as well as several TV movies. "Playwrights '56" aired on the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) in 1955 and ran for about one year. The show featured primarily small-scale dramas, often set in small towns or working-class city neighborhoods. Writers included Gore Vidal, Sumner Locke Elliott, and J.P. Miller. Notable performers included Frank Overton, Joan Blondell, Paul Douglas, Lillian Gish, Tom Evell, Edmond O'Brien, Conrad Nagel, Sylvia Sidney, Ethel Waters, Ralph Bellamy, and more. Most, if not all, of the episodes have been lost to audiences, with several kinescopes and videotapes of 14 episodes housed in the archives at the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research in Madison, Wisconsin. "The Battler" also appears to be the only episode with holdings in worldwide libraries, in visual formats only. Only the second copy of this adaptation we have handled, presumed to be the only adaptation of this Hemingway story. Gray wrappers with paper title label. Title page preset, undated, noted as "A three-part scenario," with credits for Hemingway and screenwriters Hotchner and Carroll. 26 leaves, typed, with the last leaf of text numbered 23. Near Fine overall, bound internally with three silver brads. Complete collation details available upon request.

A History of the English-Speaking Peoples

London: Cassell, 1956-58., 1956. A superb set of FIRST EDITIONS. 4 volumes. 8vo. Finely bound in recent green half morocco, gilt titles and decoration to spines with raised bands, blue cloth boards; top edges gilt. Published shortly after Sir Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, this is the author's last great work, only available some twenty years after he wrote the first draft, which then lay dormant whilst he attended to National and Parliamentary matters. In his preface he remarks that the book 'slumbered peacefully, until 1956, 'when things had quietened down'. Reading reports of the last decade of his life, one is struck by the central interest his history represented in his final years, and how rapidly he sank into decline and depression after the final volume was published.         Archive - British Architect for Foreign Aid Projects in Africa & Southeast Asia - Includes Detailed Design Plans & Specifications, Drawings, Photographs and Travel Journal

Nigeria, 1956. Nigeria, Algeria, Botswana, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Saudi Arabia, 1956-1992. Archive of senior architect K. T. Dean, featuring numerous documents, photographs and drawings for the planning and design of major projects, mainly of educational facilities for underprivileged communities in Africa and Southeast Asia, as well as one manuscript travel journal recollecting highlights of time spent abroad. The lot in very good condition. Kenneth Troughton Dean, born in England in 1926, worked on an international level with the Nigerian Government, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, and other powerful organizations, and specialized in Educational Planning and Design programs. A voluminous archive documenting long term construction projects for the betterment of educational welfare in underdeveloped countries, from inception to completion, by a British architect of high repute. Mr. Kenneth Troughton Dean concentrated his efforts, for the majority of his career, in Africa and in Southeast Asia. This material, preserved by him, commemorates and reveals details of important works in Nigeria, as well as Algeria, and Botswana, as well as Jakarta in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, and Thailand. The archive includes the following: "Tale Ends" - A Manuscript Travellogue with Photographs. 8vo. 61 pages in manuscript plus illustration in various formats including manuscript diagrams and original photographs. Entertaining and informative, with approximately 25 pages of text and several photographs devoted to travels to Nigeria, Mr. Dean recollects over three decades of travel to underdeveloped countries, having made 5 separate visits to Nigeria between the years 1956 and 1982. Fascinating advertisements, clipped articles, calling cards, and such miscellanea are also tipped in. The narrative begins by describing a journey made in 1980 for business purposes to Yanbu in Saudi Arabia, followed by a journey to El Asnam in Algeria, September 1981 with the Nottingham division of CLASP (Consortium of Local Authorities Special Programme). In June 1982 in Tunisia he met with notable architects. Two visits to Sri Lanka follow. From earlier travels, an excellent photo of Mokolo, Northern Cameroon, was taken in September 1973, followed by photographs and accounts of travels in Nigeria. Here he mentions Nigeria's NUCCON (National Universities Commission Consultants) and a civil engineering project in which he had an influential leadership role. The work was supported by the Nigerian Federal government which announced that several new universities would simultaneously be planned and constructed across the country. Neatly dividing his work by travel interest, a chapter is headed "How we lived" beginning in Indonesia and then Nigeria, revealing here that he was in Wudil as early as 1957 and was hosted by the resident architect. He digresses with an entertaining yet unsettling experience from Kaduna in 1977. The next chapter describes hotel accommodations, from most unique pesspective of an architect, of Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, and of course Nigeria (Ibadan, Onitsha, etc.) "I visited Onitsha several times while working on a World Bank schools project... introducing me to the joys of chewing cola nut...). Similarly he describes rest houses in Accra, Ghana, and in Eket, Eastern Nigeria, and then restaurants and clubs of the same regions. 34 manuscript drawings made on the spot whilst travelling through Northern Nigeria by Mr. Dean from 1975-1981 (plus 2 made in Jakarta), each captioned and dated, most initialled. A skilled sketch artist, Dean hand draws some of the places visited in the state of Kaduna including hut villages, praying grounds, irrigation, a cemetery, and a dam. In Ife he sketches the site of a future university. Drawings are also made of an old road to Zaria, a residential compound, a primary school between Zaria and Kaduna, St. Bartholomew's church in Wusasa, Zaria - the oldest church in Northern Nigeria which was established in 1922, and the road to Yakasai. He includes scenes near Gubi, at Mokolo, at Rhumsiki and the Calabar airport. Pencil and ink drawings, some coloured, varying in size from 21 x 15 cm to 29 x 19 cm, each protected in a clear plastic sleeve, the lot contained in a blue folder with manuscript label "Northern Nigeria Sketches." Volume of pertinent technical notes on construction projects mainly in Nigeria outlines construction standards, logistics, site assessment, and much more. These include African education projects undertaken in Nigeria and elsewhere with the International Development Association, the World Bank, CLASP, and NUCCON, including the University of Technology in Owerri which was established in 1980. 8vo. Coil binding over cardstock letterhead covers of Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall and Partners architect firm (RMJM) with whom he frequently partnered with. Excellent visual and data-rich portfolio of works undertaken with British architect firm RMJM (Robert Matthew, Johnson-Marshall and Partners) including documents, diagrams, letters, reports, development proposal plans and profuse with photographs. Pertaining to Nigeria, this volume features residential accommodations for Nigerian universities, and a technological university project in Ruduyausa, Gamjuwa, Bauchi, and the Bauchi State University. Among Southeast Asia projects, we find schematics and photographs of an ESL school in Bangkok. 8vo. Large green binder brimming with images and information, each item contained in a clear plastic sleeve for protection. Three file folders, titled "Draft Texts, Africa etc;" "Overseas Material;" and "Reflections - Another Work," respectively. Containing more documents and photographs, we further find newspaper clippings and other published articles, as well as Dean's personal notes, contemplations, and autobiographical summary. Subject matter herein includes, in part, work with British architect Robin Atkinson in Lagos, schools in Bahrain, World Bank involvement in Nigeria, and corruption. A large manuscript map measuring approximately 75 x 60 cm is titled "Peoples of Nigeria." Folio folders labelled in manuscript. CLASP (Consortium of Local Authorities Special Programme) is an unincorporated association made up of local authorities. It was established in 1957 at the instigation of the then Ministry of Education for the purpose of improving the construction and delivery of schools. The consortium addressed issues of skill and material short age together with a high demand. It turned to a systematic form of construction, one which relied on a high proportion of prefabricated elements and had the ability to be built on sites with poor ground conditions including mining subsidence. .         A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, Chartwell Edition

London: The Educational Book Company, Ltd., 1956. Illustrated Edition. Hardcover. This is a virtually pristine, collector-grade set of the first illustrated edition, bearing the original glassine wrappers. This first illustrated edition was published contemporaneously with the first edition and is known as "The Chartwell Edition." It is a lovely edition of Churchill?'s sweeping history and last great work. The first draft was completed just before the Second World War, but the work was not completed and published until after Churchill's second and final Premiership, nearly 20 years later. The work traces a great historical arc from Roman Britain through the end of the Nineteenth Century, ending with the death of Queen Victoria. Perhaps not coincidentally, this is the very year that saw Churchill conclude his first North American lecture tour, take his first seat in Parliament, and begin to make history himself. This edition is not only illustrated, but is also attractively bound in blue leatherette with red leather spine labels blocked in gilt, gilt ruled spine compartments, gilt volume title and vertical rule on each front cover, head and foot bands, and blue topstain. Each volume is profusely illustrated. This set is quite scarce thus, beautifully preserved beneath the original plain glassine wrappers. The bindings are virtually perfect, immaculately clean and bright, square, and tight with sharp corners, perfect spine labels, and no wear. The contents are likewise, clearly unread - crisp and bright with no previous ownership marks and vivid, unfaded topstain. We find no spotting and no previous ownership marks. The blue-stained top edges are clean and retain dark, wholly unfaded color. The fore and bottom page edges remain bright and clean. The only trivial blemish noted is a small indentation to the bottom edge of the Volume I text block. The original glassine wrappers show some wrinkling, tears, and a little loss, including some short,. horizontal tears to the spines, but are substantially complete and have done their job of protecting the magnificent set beneath. Please note that this large, heavy set may require additional postage. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A267.2, Woods/ICS A138(d). Langworth p.317.

Designs for a Nash Metropolitan Station Wagon

[New York, 1956. Pencil and pastel on paper, mildly soiled and creased. This drawing is attributed to Richard Arbib by a previous owner. There is a label on the back giving Arbib as the artist and the date of January 17, 1956. After working for Harley Earl in Detroit, Arbib opened his own studio in New York and ultimately developed designs for more than three hundred companies over the last 45 years of his career. This design for a Nash Metro station wagon was never developed, and Nash never pursued the idea of a compact station wagon. Arbib's drawing, which is unusually large, added some fins and sharp edges of the sort that American Motors generally seemed to resist, though they were among the defining characteristics of American car design for the next decade or so.

Erster Fünfjahrplan zur Entwicklung der Volkswirtschaft der Volksrepublik China (1953-1957) in Bildern und Zahlen (First five-year plan for the development of the economy of the People's Republic of China (1953-1957) in images and figures)

Verlag für Fremdsprachige Literatur, Peking 1956 - Oblong quarto. Unpaginated. [72]pp. Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over salmon cloth. Scarce German-language edition of this colorful and profusely illustrated work praising China's first five-year plan. Having restored a viable economic base, the leadership under Mao Zedong, Zhou Enlai, and other revolutionary veterans were prepared to embark on an intensive program of industrial growth and socialisation. For this purpose the administration adopted the Soviet economic model, based on state ownership in the modern sector, large collective units in agriculture, and centralized economic planning. The Soviet approach to economic development was manifested in the First Five-Year Plan (1953-1957). The key tasks highlighted in the Plan were to concentrate efforts on the construction of 694 large and medium-sized industrial projects, including 156 with the aid of the Soviet Union, so as to lay that the primary foundations for China's socialist industrialization; to develop agricultural producers' cooperatives to help in the socialist transformation of the agriculture and handicraft industries; to put capitalist industry and commerce on the track of state capitalism so as to facilitate the socialist transformation of private industry and commerce. This book is complete with its two folded plates at rear.Very scarce (not in Martin Parr's "The Chinese Photobook from the 1900s to the Present")Dust-jacket partly rubbed and creased along edges, with tiny chipping at corners. Text in German. DJ in overall good- to good, binding and interior in very good condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Toda Raba.

Athens: Thipros, 1956. First Greek edition. Octavo. Signed by Nikos Kanzantzakis. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with a chip to the foot of the spine and some small closed tears. The English translation was not published until 1964. Uncommon, especially in the original dust jacket. Most of the early apologists for the Russian Revolution scribbled down their dreams and enthusiasms and glossed over the cruelties they saw with their own eyes. One who did not was the great Greek novelist Nikos Kazantzakis, who toured Soviet Russia in the 1920s and put down his impressions in novelistic form. Translated for the first time into English, Toda Raba shows that Kazantzakis overlooked nothing: the ruthless exploitation, the sterile wrangling over doctrine, the starvation, the basement executions.

Elena et les Hommes [Paris Does Strange Things] (Original French Film Program)

Franco London Films, 1956. Original French program for the 1956 film, "Elena et les Hommes," the third of a trilogy of films directed by Jean Renoir (the others being "The Golden Coach" and "French Cancan"), starring Ingrid Bergman at the peak of her career, in which the director envisioned a very lush and stylized version of eighteenth-century France. A rare program from Jean Renoir's brief and fascinating exploration of historical drama. A beautiful and interestingly designed program, with a lovely illustration of "Elena" (Ingrid Bergman) with her "men" hanging from the ties of her bodice. Two-color informational leaves are interspersed with pairs of bound-in, full-color matte stills from the film, with a clear Mylar protector (as issued) on the front panel and a gold comb binding.         ADVENTURES OF HUCKLEBERRY FINN

London and New York: J. M. Dent & Sons and E. P. Dutton, 1956. First reprint of the Children's Illustrated Classics edition. Illustrated by C. Walter Hodges with 4 finely produced plates in colour and fourteen black and white drawings within the text. 8vo, very finely bound in full forest green morocco by Bayntun-Riviere, the spine with tall raised bands blind ruled, two compartments with gilt lettering, fine marbled endpapers and a.e.g. viii, 388 pp. A very fine copy of this very attractive printing, the binding very handsome and beautifully preserved. CHOICELY BOUND, and the great classic of American literature is nicely brought even more to life by Greenaway Medal winning C. Walter Hodges' illustrations. Though English, Hodges had no trouble capturing the uniquely American characters and settings. Along with TOM SAWYER, HUCKLEBERRY FINN is considered the stepping stone to modern American literature. And along with TOM SAWYER, for the first time, the hero of the novel was a boy.

        Le goût de notre temps

Albert Skira, Genf 1956 - O.-Leinen mit OU im O.-Schuber. Vorsatz mit Zeichnung lavierte Tusche (lavis d'encre sur papier, 24 x 17 cm) von Marc Chagall. Handsigniert und datiert von Marc Chagall (signed and with an original drawing by Marc Chagall): "Pour Karl Georg Hemmerich. Marc Chagall 1956 Geneve." Hoffmann. Seeburg 2008. In diesem Band ist die Zeichnung Chagalls auf Seite 62 abgebildet. Wolfram Lambrecht verwaltet den Nachlass von Karl Georg Hemmerich. - Beilage: Lionello Venturi: Chagall. Biographisch-kritische Studie. Übersetzt von Karl Georg Hemmerich. Mit zahlreichen montierten Farbabbildungen.         A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.

London: Cassell and Company, 1956-1958.. First British editions of each of the four volumes of this set. Octavo, original cloth, 4 volumes. Volumes one and four are signed by Winston Churchill on the title page. Some scattered foxing, as usual with this set, near fine in the original dust jackets that show some toning and light wear.

Small 4to, [11 inc. the first blank]pp. 18 b/w plates printed on Japan vellum with a title-sheet printed in red on plain paper preceding each image. Six copies are recorded on WorldCat to which add Toronto (Fisher Library) and Essick (CA). Leonard Baskin?s note, from the Bibliography: ?This was the last book which was made with my hands, that cessation a benefaction since I was a compositor & pressman of no distinction. This book is an homage to Blake & the dear youths who plied him with honour in his late age. My increased skill in woodengraving is here made manifest & a pattern for a kind of Gehenna Press book makes its beginning here; an introduction succeeded by a series of prints. The title-page reveals the novice?s poking into historical sources & exemplars.?

        World of Chance

Rich & Cowan, 1956. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. Published by Rich & Cowan, 1956. First edition, first printing, with first issue dust jacket. Incredibly rare in any condition. Hardcover, in jacket. First issue price of 9s. 6d. intact on jacket flap. Ex-library copy. Library sticker on jacket spine, top and bottom edge of jacket previously had a thin strip clipped by the library to enable it to fit into the old style jacket protector used by libraries at that time. Light edge wear, light glue residue on front flap. Otherwise jacket remains bright and is now in fresh Mylar. Book itself has blue boards, with silver lettering. Boards and lettering are bright and clean. Page edges show soiling and aging. Interior has a few library stamps and markings, glue residue to end pages. Rear hinge beginning to crack, rest of binding strong. Light slant to spine. Text is unmarked, however the book shows typical signs of a well read library book, periodic soiling here and there on the interior pages, some pages dog eared. A good copy, in good jacket. Additional photos available upon request. All first edition points met: Price of 9s. 6d. on jacket flap, silver space ship logo on spine, "First published 1956" on copyright page, no date on title page. World of Chance is Philip K. Dick's first published novel. It was first published as a paperback original called Solar Lottery in 1955. This UK edition, the first hardcover edition, was put out a year later by Rich & Cowan and retitled World of Chance. The texts of Solar Lottery and World of Chance differ considerably. World of Chance reportedly having entire passages included that are missing form Solar Lottery, however World of Chance also contains heavy editing to cut down on the novels overall length. The first hardcover edition of Philip K. Dick's first novel. Extremely rare and very hard to find.

        Straight and Narrow Path

1956 - TRACY, Honor. The Straight and Narrow Path. New York: Random House, (1956). Octavo, original half white cloth, original dust jacket. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $1600.Early American issue, inscribed by Lyndon Johnson to Thomas Corcoran, a New Deal "Brain Trust" advisor to FDR who was instrumental in negotiating Johnson's place on the 1960 Democratic ticket, "To Tommy Corcoran, who has made me understand why someday the Irish will inherit the earth, from his grateful friend Lyndon B. Johnson. USS Texas May 29, 1957."Honor Tracy was an English writer best known for her travel writing; she eventually settled in Ireland, converted to Catholicism, and wrote a number of novels set in Ireland, as here. First published in London the same year. The recipient of this copy, Thomas Gardiner Corcoran, was a member of FDR's inner circle, the "Brain Trust" whose advice the president relied on. After falling out with FDR over what the Irish Catholic Corcoran considered FDR's excessively pro-British policies, Corcoran returned to private practice, but retained enormous political influence. It was FDR who forged the initial alliance between Corcoran and Johnson. When Johnson first arrived in Washington he immediately impressed Roosevelt. "The President himself telephoned Corcoran: 'I've just met the most remarkable young man. Now I like this boy, and you're going to help him with anything you can'" (Dallek, Lyndon B. Johnson: Portrait of a President, 38). Corcoran later served as the intermediary between Kennedy and Johnson when negotiating Johnson's presence on the Democratic ticket in 1960 as the vice presidential candidate, and remained a confidante of Johnson throughout his time in office.Book fine, light soiling to white dust jacket.         The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1956 UK 8th Impression in Dustjacket

London: Allen & Unwin, 1956. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/Very Good Plus. J.R.R. Tolkien. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. Published by Allen & Unwin in 1956. The book is in Very Good Plus condition. The covers show a bit of fading to the edges and where the white areas of the dustjacket didn't protect from fading as well. Previous owners name and 1956 date to 2nd blank page, no other names or writing noted. The dustjacket is price clipped front and rear, with the publishers new price printed to the front flap. Two months into production of the 7th Impression of the Hobbits, along with the remaining original 7th Impression dustjackets, Allen & Unwin changed the price as found on this true UK 7th impression dustjacket. The jackets were price clipped -- both front and rear flap -- by Allen & Unwin publishing company itself, with their new price of 12s.6d overprinted below the impression notation on the front flap. So this copy is one with the overprinted price of 12s 6d. A bit of foxing to the flap edges and to the white areas of the dustjacket, with the spine considerably darkened. The verso of the dustjacket also shows the darkening, but does not seem to have transferred to the book itself. Some edgewear and chips with color loss at the top of the spine, and almost none to the bottom. Tips of the flap folds show some loss, mainly to the top folds, but none to the bottom. The original green cloth features dark blue stamping of Tolkien's own design, the iconic Mountains and Dragon. The title verso has the full printing history up to this 8th impression of 1956. Colors are bright and the white areas are soiled, with the darkening of the all areas of the spine. Edges of the text block are clean and unfoxed, with the topstain faded but still evident. A beautiful copy, of an early printing, of this much sought after children's classic. Additional digital images are available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus.
