Report on Montgomery, Alabama [together with a leaflet announcing a talk by Rustin]

New York: War Resisters League, 1956. 4p., brochure folded from a single sheet, near fine. Prefaced by an explanatory note by Roy Finch. OCLC lists two holdings as of January 2017. Also included is a 6.75x8.75 inch leaflet, with a faint vertical crease, announcing a talk by Rustin soon after his return to New York from Montgomery, with protest songs by Josh White, chaired by James Farmer. Finch states that "On February 20 the League's Executive Committee learned that a request had been received for Bayard Rustin to go to Montgomery, Alabama to consult with certain leaders of the bus boycott. A one-day protest demonstration had unexpectedly developed into a major experiment with non-violent resistance and was entering its eleventh week. Because tension was mounting, and because there was grave danger of violent racial conflict, the Executive Committee felt the League should do all in its power to help strengthen those forces in the Negro community which are exploring non-violence..." Rustin's report discusses the factors behind tension in Alabama and the importance of the Montgomery protest. This was the visit during which Rustin convinced Martin Luther King Jr. to firmly commit to nonviolence. Rustin notes of the young King that he "is developing a decidedly Gandhi-like view and recognizes there is a tremendous educational job to be done within the Negro community. He is eagerly learning all that he can about non-violence and evidence indicates that he is emerging as a regional symbol of non-violent resistance in the deep South." The fateful interaction between these two leaders in early 1956 set the course for the non-violent civil rights movement as it is commemorated today, and was the first of many collaborative efforts between King and Rustin. Rustin emerged as one of King's chief advisors.

        Untitled maquette

unpublished - PAULIN, FRANK. Photographs Taken at Belmont Racetrack in 1956, no publisher, 2007. Square quarto, photographer's maquette (or mock-up) of a book that was never published, unpaginated, light green cloth boards with a gelatin silver print of the jockey Eddie Arcaro mounted on front. No text except for Paulin's title page, which he signed and dated 2007. Mostly duotones with one mounted chromogenic print (signed and dated), 34 images in all, plus a silver gelatin print laid in -- duplicate of the cover print. The cover print is mounted on top of another print, which is not visible. Paulin, who died in 2016, made only one attempt at a genuine photobook, and this is it. Paulin was a great documentary and street photographer who made his living doing commercial jobs. Certainly no outsider, he studied under Moholy-Nagy and Harry Callahan at the New Bauhaus in Chicago and was exhibiting his photos before the New York art world accepted photos as worth exhibiting. His pioneering single-artist show at the Limelight coffeehouse and gallery in Greenwich Village in 1957 attracted favorable reviews, and he went on to do other shows and sell prints at auction. "Out of the Limelight," an exhibition catalog published by Silverstein Photography, includes the biggest published collection of Paulin photos and an essay by Max Kozloff explaining Paulin's relative obscurity: "New York in the 1950s attracted photographers who could reasonably expect to earn a living in media. Some of them, though, cordoned off their professional jobs from their compulsive personal work, which became their real vocation. . It was a joy for these effusive misfits to operate freely outside their assignments, so much so that they never gave a thought to advance their private work in the formation of a career." These Belmont photos are not what you would see on the sports page. Paulin lurked away from the actual track to show the full range of denizens inhabiting horse-racing environs -- the happy, the sad, the lame, and everybody colorful in their unique way.         [Photo-Archive:] Photographs of an Israeli Soldier and Israeli Defense Forces Operations in the Field, circa 1956-1973

[Israel. circa 1956-1973]. An archive consisting of 60 loose black & white snapshots and related photographs of an Israeli soldier and the military operations of an Israeli Defense Force (IDF) armored brigade in the field, spanning the years from 1959 through the mid-1970s. The collection includes images taken during the 1967 Six Day War and 1973 Yom Kippur War, and other IDF military operations. Also included are images of various bands of armed men dating back to 1959, most of whom are informally dressed and armed with rifles (rather than Uzi submachine guns which most Israeli soldiers were armed with). The collection contains an Israeli ID card of a young man issued in 1958, presumably the photographer, who served in an armored brigade, along with a snapshot of a woman in uniform dating from the same period, and 3 or 4 family photographs taken in Eastern Europe, one of which shows a young boy and father at a family grave in Poland. Although we have not be able to clearly identify the photographer, the image of the headstone in Poland records the name of one Josef Sadek who died in 1956.The collection is roughly divided into three lots, the first consisting of 21 prints dating from 1959 -- circa 1960; a second lot of 33 prints dating from the 1960s -- mid-1970s (including 1 color print of IDF soldiers assigned to a bulldozer); and a third lot of 6 personal prints (including the ID card). A few prints are captioned on the back in Hebrew, all in near fine condition. An intriguing collection featuring many compelling images of Israeli tank crews and individual soldiers, documenting in particular the ethnic diversity of the men, and their high morale. .

        Boat in Dry Dock Watercolor

Very Good. Painting. A watercolor painting from James Reynolds. From auction records, according to Reynolds' first wife, this was one of only two watercolors he painted sometime from 1956 to 1958, when the rest of his paintings were oil and tempura. A Hollywood studio artist at the time, Reynolds later became well-known for his depictions of the American West. This is one of two paintings of a boat in dry dock painted around the same time; the other is signed but this one isn't. The painting is in very good condition with an adhesive mark on a few millimeters of one edge from framing. ; Watercolor; 21" x 28" .
