The Corfu Trilogy - All three first printings

Rupert Hart-Davis/Collins, 1956 A first edition, first printing published by Rupert Hart-Davis and Collins between 1956-79. Comprising: 'My Family and Other Animals': A first edition, first printing published by Rupert Hart-Davis in 1956. A fine book without inscriptions in a very good+ (or better) dust wrapper with a little loss to the head of the spine and to corners. Some light internal tape repairs. 'Birds, Beasts and Relatives': A very good+ book with some spotting to the page edges (thin stain to the rear endpaper), in a near fine clipped wrapper. 'The Garden of the Gods': A near fine book, in a very good unclipped wrapper with some light chipping to the top edge. A nice set of the three books which make up Durrell's 'Corfu Trilogy', the basis for the (now) popular ITV drama.

        Mr. Arkadin.

8vo., original cloth with dust wrapper. A little rubbing and creasing to head of spine of wrapper, a little spotting to prelims, otherwise a very good copy. First UK edition, inscribed by Welles "To Keith Burns best regards Orson Welles." Kevin Johnson, author of The Dark Page. Books that Inspired American Film Noir, notes that this is the only signed copy of this English edition that is thus far known. The basis of the 1955 film noir of the same name directed by and starring Welles as the title character. The film was released in England under the title "Confidential Report". "It is perhaps surprising that Orson Welles, so phenomenally active and versatile in the arts, has not written a novel before. Mr Arkadin finds Mr Welles in what may perhaps be described as his "Third Man" mood". Welles was unhappy with the film and indeed denied authorship of the novel, although it was confirmed as his work by many others. Collector Keith Burns, a former NBC News editor and son-in-law of RKO Pictures assistant director Samuel Ruman sold off some of his Welles-related treasures in 2015. Burns met Welles on the sets of The Dean Martin Show and The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson. The two men shared an interest in magic. (Burns has authored books on magician Dai Vernon). "Welles liked me because I was an editor," Burns said. "I was a fan, but not a fawning fan." Burns' collection includes items given to him by Welles and Ruman and collectibles he purchased from "directors and producers who fell on hard times in the 1970s."

The Chronicles of Narnia:] The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe; Prince Caspian; The Voyage of the Dawn Treader; The Silver Chair; The Horse and His Boy; The Magician's Nephew; The Last Battle.

London: Geoffrey Bles, [The Bodley Head] 1950-1956 - 7 volumes, octavo. Recent burgundy morocco, raised bands to spines, titles and extra decoration to spines gilt, single rule to boards gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a matching cloth slipcase. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent set. With colour frontispieces and black and white illustrations by Pauline Baynes. First editions, first impressions throughout this complete set of the beloved Narnia series. 'The immediate inspiration for "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" was a series of nightmares that Lewis had had about Lions. More seriously, he was concerned to do for children what he had done for an adult readership in his science fiction trilogy. The Narnia novels are not allegorical; they are entirely in keeping with the belief, shared by Lewis and his close friend and Oxford colleague Tolkien, that stories in themselves, especially of the mythical type, can give spiritual nourishment without imparting abstract meaning. As Naomi Lewis has written, the books are 'intoxicating' to all but the most relentlessly unimaginative readers, and must be judged the most sustained achievement in fantasy for children by a 20th century author'. Oxford Companion to Children Literature, p.370. [Attributes: First Edition]

An Illustrated Ethnography of Formosan Aborigines. Vol. 1 - The Yami Tribe.

Seikatsusha, Tokyo, 1956. - 2. Aufl. Kultur an. Daraus entstand dieses einmalige Werk, in seiner Art vergleichbar mit dem Klassiker von Bateson/Mead: The Balinese Character. "Cultural Anthropologists who use photographic documentation in research or teaching, will learn much from this monumental attempt to provide acomprehensive, illustrated "natural history" of a marginal contemporary Malaysian Society." (American Anthropologist, Vol. 61, Dec.1959, S. 1133). "This first edition was largely destroyed by fire during the air-raids and was soon out of print."(Zitat von Segawa aus dem Vorwort der einzigen und ebenfalls äußerst seltenen Neuauflage von 1956)

        Rotkäppchen.

Prag: Artia, (1956). Oblong small quarto. (16)pp. First edition. A pop-up rendition of Little Red Riding Hood by Jirí Trnka, in full color, with four foldable figurines of the characters that interact with the pop-up scenes. Illustrated with portraits of Red and the Wolf to the title page, and two vignettes of the picnic Red is bringing to her Grandmother. Only the introduction and epilogue pages bear text. The rest of the story is represented by four pop-up spreads, printed in rich colors. Each spread shows one of the settings of our story--Red's home, the forest, the inside of Grandmother's cottage, and the backyard well. These settings serve as backgrounds for the foldable figurines of Red, Grandmother, the Wolf, and the Hunter, allowing the reader to act out the story for him or herself. Accompanying the book is a pamphlet that shows how to fold the characters, and provides the full text of the story, which could be read aloud to narrate the action "on stage." Bound in illustrated paper over boards with a cloth spine and decorative endpapers. Book shows light edgewear and one creased corner to the flyleaf, else fine. All pieces of the figurines present and in fine condition. Scarcely found complete.

Spectacular Marilyn Monroe hand written screen notes for a scene from a play, approximately 132 words in her hand

n.p., ca. 1956. 8" x 12.25". "Single sheet of handwritten notes on lined paper, 8"" x 12.25"". Fully scripted in graphite in Monroe's hand on recto with verso left blank. The moniker of MMM located to the left margin, with a word count of 132 words. Edgewear to paper, with small intact tears outside of margins, except one 1"" intact tear along top edge outside of margins. Faint smudging and overall lightly toned. Excellent condition. One full page scripted entirely in Monroe's hand with her famous Moniker ""MMM"" (Marilyn Monroe Miller) boldly placed to the left margin, which she began to use after her marriage to Arthur Miller in 1956. Marilyn was frequently taking acting classes. Earlier in her career while still under contract to Fox, Marilyn had begun taking acting lessons at the Actors Lab in the early 1940's, a practice she continued after she was dropped by the studio. She paid for her lessons with occasional modeling jobs, though the Lab allowed her some leeway in paying her bill. However the moniker of MMM most likely dates her handwritten notes to about 1956, a highly influential period of her life, when she went to the New York actors studio shortly after her enormous success in 1955 with ""The Seven Year Itch"". It was at this time of her life that she wanted serious acting to replace her sexpot image, an image she struggled to grapple with (yet originally had promoted extensively to the point of being known to shave an inch off a heel on her shoe to perfect her trademark wiggle). In her real life, Actor Eli Wallach has remarked how she could walk through the streets of New York City and not be noticed and then, in a moment's time, make some inner adjustment to transform herself into the beautiful, breathy, and sensual movie star that everyone recognized. Heads turned, traffic stopped, and fans came running. ""I just felt like being Marilyn for a moment,"" she would say. But Marilyn's roots were from a very different place. A place where she perhaps directly related to the character Lorna, from the very scene she was practicing for in this script for the play ""Golden Boy"". Lorna, the ""tough broad"", Lorna the broad with huge vulnerability, Lorna who was born a ""butterfly"". In a twist of ultimate irony, Marilyn Monroe in real life was just Norma Jeane Mortenson, born to a single parent and placed in a foster home early in her life. Marilyn also was a fighter, Marilyn also was known for her full vulnerability (in fact it was this allusion of herself as a vulnerable childlike woman that made her famous), and Marilyn also had a tough past but was born a ""butterfly"".Marilyn's handwritten pages depict the dialogue for the character of Lorna, from Act 1, Scene 4 of the play performed in 1937, Golden Boy by Clifford Odet. One can almost feel Marilyn practicing her lines. This play in particular is highly solicited and extensively practiced in acting classes. It is a huge favorite of actors due to the wonderful and complex characters and the incredible lines. The play has been described by others as: ""The plot itself kind of creaks along, it’s not natural, BUT … despite all of that: there is some dialogue in this play that would knock you on your ass. Odets at his very best. Oh, and Lorna Moon is the tough broad who is the girlfriend/gun moll of Joe Bonaparte’s boxing manager (Tom Moody). Lorna’s had a tough life, and the broad is HARD. At least seemingly so. She is a fantastic part. Because, of course, she has HUGE vulnerability beneath that tough exterior. Actresses are known to have a great time with this character.""Marylyn's handwritten scripted lines are in part:""Success and fame or just a lousy living – your lucky you won't have to worry about those thingsUnless Tom Moody's a liar I like himNo I never did – thats the Carousel that music. Did you ever ride on one of those weren't you ever a kid for God's sakeWhyI wouldn’t have taken that too seriousLot of horses trot around here-the rich know how to live-You'll be richWhats thatNo when I came out of the cocoon I was a butterfly and butterflies don't workHe goes up to see his kid on Tuesday night-Is a sick kid, a girl. His wife leaves it at her mothers house. What are you hinting atWhy think about it I don't why should you""As one reads her lines, one can only imagine how Monroe must have connected with her role as Lorna. References to wishing for a childhood lost, a wish to live rich as ""the rich know how to live"" , a belief in you can be anything you want, and the drive and ambition to make your way to the top, and do whatever it takes, all would have resonated with her.A wonderful piece of Marilyn Monroe memorabilia with absolutely great content"

        Quiet Days In Clichy

First Edition Paris The Olympia Press, 8, Rue de Nesle 1956 First Impression ("First and original edition" on title page). Small 8vo: 171,[1]pp, with 29 full-page plates photogravures (recto and verso, of which one verso only and one double-page photomontage of Paris after dark) by Brassai (pseudonym of Gyula Halász), printed from the negatives on glossy photographic stock (the only printing in which the plates were so produced). Original stiff wrappers designed by T. Tajiri, printed in grey, yellow and black; grey end papers; custom clamshell box covered with canary-yellow vintage cloth, printed paper spine label. Just about Fine copy (slight color loss to spine folds and crown) of this small, fragile volume, which is becoming less common in collectible condition. Provenance: decorative period book plate to first blank. Fine- A short novel, celebrating love, art, and the Bohemian life, that contains a second story, "Mara-Marignan," both dating from the same period as Tropic of Cancer, when Miller was an obscure, penniless young writer in Paris. A few months after Miller returned to New York, in 1940, he was, as usual, flat-broke. A quick moneymaking opportunity arose when a man named Barnet Runer arranged for Miller to write pornography at a dollar a page for an Oklahoma erotica collector named Roy M. Johnson. Early drafts of "Mara-Marignan" and "Quiet Days in Clichy" were the result. Johnson was not impressed; he found them to be "too poetic," and the manuscripts for both stories went missing?"lost for over ten years," Miller wrote in 1956?then "turned up miraculously?where I won't say now"?after which Miller rewrote both stories, in Big Sur, in May of that year, for publication a few months later. This first edition was published in Paris, in June 1956, with photographs of 1930s Paris (street-scenes of prostitutes; sailors fondling women in cafes, young people flirting, kissing, dancing, and drinking) by Brassai. "In 1933 Miller wrote to a friend of his intention 'to make a niche for him (Brassai) in this present book.' The illustrations Miller obtained from Brassai never went into "Tropic Cancer'," but were used instead in "Quiet Days in Clichy" twenty-three years later, "because one of the principal themes of my book is the street'" and "to show, rather than hide, the erotic aspects of the city."         Flight from the Enchanter, The

First Edition London Chatto & Windus 1956 A superb First Impression of Murdoch's second novel, following Under the Net. 8vo: 316,[2]pp. Publisher's cinnamon-colored cloth, spine lettered in gilt; pictorial dust jacket (price-clipped) illustrated by Edward Bawden. Fine, square, tight binding, pages crisp and fresh, in a Fine, bright, completely unfaded example of the magnificent jacket. Fine Murdoch denied putting friends into her novels, but the model for the enchanter Mischa Fox was the Bulgarian-born, Nobel Prize-winning writer Elias Canetti, Murdoch's lover from January 1953 until late 1955. According to Murdoch's biographer, Peter Conradi, Canetti, the "god-monster of Hampstead . . . represented the artist-as-manipulative-and-sadistic-mythomaniac" in her imagination. He was a cruel and controlling lover who dominated a coterie of enthralled "disciples" and mistresses, a role he reenacts in several of Murdoch's early novels, particularly Flight from the Enchanter, which she dedicated to him. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         A History of the English-Speaking Peoples.

London: Cassell, 1956-58. FIRST EDITIONS. 4 volumes, octavo. Handsomely bound in burgundy half morocco with gilt titles and decoration to spines, raised bands, matching cloth boards, top edges gilt. Internally clean, externally unmarked. A fine copy of this monumental multi-volume book. Published shortly after Sir Winston Churchill was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, this is the author's last great work, only available some twenty years after he wrote the first draft, which then lay dormant whilst he attended to National and Parliamentary matters. In his preface he remarks that the book 'slumbered peacefully, until 1956, 'when things had quietened down'. Reading reports of the last decade of his life, one is struck by the central interest his history represented in his final years, and how rapidly he sank into decline and depression after the final volume was published. Woods A138(a). Langworth 315.

        Watercolor drawing of Madeline.

      (c. 1956). Watercolor and ink on paper, measuring 11 by 8 1/2 inches (28x22cm). Matted and framed. Signed by Bemelmans. This shoulder-length portrait of Bemelmans's most enduring character is done in the later, bold style encountered in Madeline and the Bad Hat, and it shows red-headed Madeline wearing her characteristic wide-brimmed hat trimmed with a blue ribbon and high-collared shirt with a blue neckpiece. Although Bemelmans was quite prolific, original drawings of Madeline seldom appear on the market. Slight mat burn, else fine in a lightly worn wood frame, painted pink to complement the color of Madeline's rosy cheeks.
