Strange Concept Car with Beautiful Woman

1954. Mixed media on charcoal gray composition board. Signed "R. Arbib '54". Framed. Highly imaginative concept car by Richard Arbib This unusual, bird-like front design was conceived of and drawn by Richard Arbib. It is clearly a notion derived from something other than other cars and represents an invitation to a world of creature-like vehicles that car manufacturers turned down. It is enticingly odd, and the beautiful, laughing woman leaning against it seems to be there to reassure the fearful viewer. If someone that beautiful and well-dressed is comfortable with it, why shouldn't I?

The Woman Who Was No More

Rinehart and Company New York: Rinehart and Company. (1954). First. First American edition. Page edges very slightly browned, still fine in fine dustwrapper. An exceptionally uncommon title, the first book by this French team to be published in the U.S. Basis for the classic Henri-Georges Clouzot film Les Diaboliques, with Simone Signoret and the director's wife Vera Clouzot, in which the two women conspire to murder their sadistic husband/lover. The film is arguably the best psychological thriller of all time, and one from which many of the conventions of the genre stem. Alfred Hitchcock, already well-established as the "Master of Suspense," was upset at having missed the film rights to this book and took special care to acquire the rights to Boileau and Narcejac's follow-up, which became Vertigo. Later remade several times, including a 1994 version with Sharon Stone and Isabelle Adjani. Translated from the French and published before the film was released, this had a very small print run, perhaps as few as a thousand copies. Considering the cheap leftover wartime materials employed, it is unlikely to have survived in any numbers. This is the nicest copy we've seen. .

        In-Band Single-Frequency Signaling. [Manuscript received June 7, 1954].

New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1954. 8vo. The entire volume XXXIII (Part I-II), 1954 of The Bell System Technical Journal bound in a nice full green cloth. Library stamp to free front end-paper and title page. Minor discolouring to extremities. Binding tight, clean and fresh. Also internally very nice and clean. Pp. 1309-1330. [Entire volume: 1400 pp.]. First edition of this famous and influential paper, which described the process used for routing telephone calls over trunk lines. The article revealed the internal operation of the long distance switching system in use at that time. This information caused hackers and phone phreaks to develop the Blue Box which enabled them to make free long-distance calls. Among the more famous phreaks can be found the two Apple founders Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs. The use of the Blue Box developed into a sub-culture and many of its users ended up with jail sentences for hacking. The article is now widely regarded as being the most infamous article in The Bell System Techinal Journal

Original Painting: "Man With A Cane

1954. Oil on Masonite board. 16-1/4" x 12"; signed lower left. In original hand-made frame with ACA Gallery label on reverse, just above Gropper's ink hand-stamp. Provenance: estate of American philosopher, author and civil libertarian Corliss Lamont; his name added in pencil to the gallery label, presumably to note his purchase of the painting. Surface scratches to masonite; mild wear to frame; image undisturbed. Gropper, whose fame as an illustrator and political caricaturist was established in the 1930's, held one man shows at ACA Gallery (New York) in 1954, 1956, & 1958, where he exhibited many of the paintings inspired by his visit to the Warsaw ghetto in the late 1940s. This image, of a rabbinical figure holding a cane and looking to the heavens, though undated, is likely from that period.
