The Vikings [Only Existing Copy; Typewritten Manuscript; JOHN STEINBECK'S PERSONAL COPY; Unpublished] [Author of: The Grapes of Wrath; Of Mice and Men; East of Eden; In Dubious Battle; Cup of Gold; Pastures of Heaven; Travels with Charley; Tortilla Flat; The Long Valley; In Dubious Battle; Cannery Row; The Winter of Our Discontent; The Red Pony; Sea of Cortez; The Moon is Down; The Pearl; and others]

New York: John Steinbeck, 1954. First edition. Stapled sheets.. Near Fine. A RARE, UNPUBLISHED STEINBECK MANUSCRIPT; the ONLY KNOWN COPY. John Steinbeck's personal copy of "The Vikings", being the typewritten carbon Manuscript of Steinbeck's draft filmscript. The Manuscript came directly from John Steinbeck's Upper East Side apartment in New York having, remained there in Steinbeck's personal files for decades. (Steinbeck died in 1968 and we purchased the Manuscript earlier this year -2010.) Housed in John Steinbeck's manila file and Forty-nine (49) pages long, the Manuscript is in excellent condition, with a small staple at the upper left corner, some wrinkling around the staple, and some vertical creases near the center of the early and last pages. Steinbeck has written "Envelope" in pencil at the upper right corner of the first page and the Manuscript itself bears a few black ink corrections in Steinbeck's hand. Steinbeck based the filmscript on Henrik Ibsen's play "The Vikings of Helgeland" and had Ingrid Bergman in mind to play the female lead in his movie adaptation. He wrote to Bergman to see if she would be interested in taking the role and, in response, Bergman stated: "Thou art minded I play a woman as mighty as Hjordas? Set thy hand to work....." (Norway's Henrik Ibsen was one of the great playwrights and theater directors of his age, considered by many to be the father of modern drama. Written in 1857, "The Vikings of Helgeland" was Ibsen's seventh Play.) Steinbeck's film adaptation was never produced and is rarely mentioned in discussions on Steinbeck. (He began the work in 1954 but ultimately abandoned it. We presume the work would have been longer had he finished the project.) WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO LOCATE ANY OTHER COPY OF THIS FILMSCRIPT IN EXISTENCE ANYWHERE, IN ANY FORM and so, as best we can determine, THIS IS THE ONLY COPY IN EXISTENCE. John Steinbeck won the 1962 Nobel Prize for Literature. A unique and collection-distinguishing item for the Steinbeck collector, as well as for any collector of modern literature. EXCEEDINGLY RARE.

Phyllis in Peril [Complete set on 20 chapters on original sheets of glossy photographic paper]

Bondage cartoon serial. One of the earliest bondage work of Stanton for the Nutrix Corporation (Irbving Klaw). Original and complete set of 20 chapters of the cartoon serial Phyllis in Peril. First publication on sheets of 8'' x 10'' glossy photographic paper. Good conditions Très bon couverture souple Edition originale

THE ARABIAN NIGHTS ENTERTAINMENTS [CT IN 4 VOLS]

NY: The Limited Editions Club. Fine with no dust jacket. 1954. First Trade Edition. Hardcover. Fine Press; Art; Arabic; Color Illustrations; 4to 11" - 13" tall; Richard Burton - Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton KCMG FRGS was a British geographer, explorer, translator, writer, soldier, orientalist, cartographer, ethnologist, spy, linguist, poet, fencer and diplomat. He was known for his travels and explorations within Asia, Africa and the Americas as well as his extraordinary knowledge of languages and cultures. According to one count, he spoke 29 European, Asian and African languages. Burton's best-known achievements include travelling in disguise to Mecca, an unexpurgated translation of "One Thousand and One Nights" (also commonly called "The Arabian Nights" in English after Andrew Lang's abridgement) , bringing the "Kama Sutra" to publication in English, and journeying with John Hanning Speke as the first Europeans led by Africa's greatest explorer guide, Sidi Mubarak Bombay, utilizing route information by Indian and Omani merchants who traded in the region, to visit the Great Lakes of Africa in search of the source of the Nile. Burton extensively criticized colonial policies (to the detriment of his career) in his works and letters. He was a prolific and erudite author and wrote numerous books and scholarly articles about subjects including human behaviour, travel, falconry, fencing, sexual practices and ethnography. A unique feature of his books is the copious footnotes and appendices containing remarkable observations and unexpurgated information. He was a captain in the army of the East India Company serving in India (and later, briefly, in the Crimean War). Following this he was engaged by the Royal Geographical Society to explore the east coast of Africa and led an expedition guided by the locals and was the first European to see Lake Tanganyika. In later life he served as British consul in Fernando Po, Santos, Damascus and, finally, Trieste. He was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and was awarded a knighthood (KCMG) in 1886.         The Lord Of The Rings [; The Fellowship Of The Ring; The Two Towers; The Return Of The King] - 1st Edition

George Allen & Unwin, Ltd. 1954,1954,1955 8vo A most attractive set of Tolkien's three Landmark Books: (1) The Fellowship of the Ring, one of 2,500 first impression/first state copies bound by Jarrold and Sons, very Nearly Fine condition in alike dust-wrapper; (2) The Two Towers, 3,250 first impressions, faded top-stain, light foxing of page edges, in about Fine dust-wrapper; (3) The Return of the King, one of 7,000 First Edition/First Printings, Near Fine with light foxing to page edges in about Fine, second state dustjacket with reviewer comments to first two titles on back-flap, variant three with signature mark '4' present on page 49 and lines 'sagging' in the middle, originally designated as first state by Hammond/Anderson, later corrected by Wayne Hammond [The Tolkien Collector, Issue 11]. All volumes complete with folded maps of Middle Earth tipped in onto recto, back free endpaper with minor professional paper restoration. Dust-wrappers with original prices, free of prior owner inscriptions or markings. Rather scarce in this condition; Tolkien began The Lord of the Rings between 16 and 19 December 1937, three months after The Hobbit was published and George Allen & Unwin were encouraging Tolkien, against his inclination, to write a sequel. The rest is history. As C. S. Lewis commented (from the dust-jacket) : "If Ariosto rivalled it in invention (in fact he does not) he would still lack its heroic seriousness. No imaginary world has been projected which is at once so multifarious and so true to its own inner laws; none so seemingly objective, so disinfected from the taint of the author's merely individual psychology, no so relevant to the actual human situation yet so free from allegory. And what fine shading there is in the variations of style to meet the almost endless diversity of scenes and characters - comic, homely, epic, monstrous, or diabolic."

Hare, 1904. Drengeportræt (kunstnerens ældste søn), 1905. Havlit, 1913. Hjejlen II. Lærken I. Syngende lærke, set fra siden. Hejren. Stenpikker, 1930. Rødhals, 1920. Krabbedykker, 1920. Syngende lærke, 1920. Dåhjort, vignet, 1921. To ederfugle, vignet, 1921. Pelikan, 1921. To sortspætter I, 1921. Tjurer I, 1921. En rype, 1921. Gejrfugle, 1921. Forarbejde til skovsneppen, 1926. Troldand, 1938. Klukflaske II, 1944. (Viggo Naae)

Strange Concept Car with Beautiful Woman

1954. Mixed media on charcoal gray composition board. Signed "R. Arbib '54". Framed. Highly imaginative concept car by Richard Arbib This unusual, bird-like front design was conceived of and drawn by Richard Arbib. It is clearly a notion derived from something other than other cars and represents an invitation to a world of creature-like vehicles that car manufacturers turned down. It is enticingly odd, and the beautiful, laughing woman leaning against it seems to be there to reassure the fearful viewer. If someone that beautiful and well-dressed is comfortable with it, why shouldn't I?
