The Structure of Proteins: Two Hydrogen-Bonded Helical Configurations of the Polypeptide Chain" in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 37, 1951, pp. 205-211 WITH "The Pleated Sheet, a New Layer Configuration of Polypeptide Chains" in PNAS, 37, 1951, pp. 251-256 WITH "Configurations of Polypeptide Chains with Equivalent CIS Amide Groups," PNAS, 38, 1952, pp. 86-93

FIRST EDITION OF THREE OF SEVEN PAPERS BY PAULING AND COREY ON THE MOLECULAR STRUCTURE OF PROTEINS. A decade before x-ray crystallography first revealed the structures of proteins, Pauling and Corey deduced their main structural features: the 'alpha-helix,' the 'gamma helix' and the 'beta sheet.' Their work had the same significance for proteins as the Watson and Crick papers (published two years later) had for the structure of DNA. "Instead of tackling the structure of an entire protein, the two scientists' efforts centered on discrete bits of proteins -- tiny crystals made up of repeating units called amino acids. When numberous amino acids link together to form chains, the chains assemble into one of several different configurations. Because an entire protein can encompass hundreds of these configurations folded into a tangled and sometimes impenetrable bundle, Pauling and Corey focused on elucidating the structure of each configuration one by one" (Brownlee, 'The Protein Papers,' on the PNAS at 100: Classics of the Scientific Literature, PNAS Website). "Pauling and Corey's research, now over a half-century old, guides today's biotechnology revolution and the search for hundreds of disease cures" (ibid). Linus Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954 "for his research into the nature of the chemical bond and its application to the elucidation of the structure of complex substances" (ibid). CONDITION & DETAILS: Easton, PA: Mack Printing. Two volume first edition Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 37 and 38, 1951. Entire volumes. Quarto. (10 x 7 inches; 250 x 175mm). Bound in dark tan buckram, gilt-lettered at the spine. Moderate surface rubbing and scuffing. Tightly and very solidly bound. Bright and very clean throughout. Very good condition.

        MARIA

[Queens, NY]: Salamander Editions [Joseph Cornell], (1954). First Edition. Wraps. Very good. Small 8vo. Original printed stapled wraps. Original blue tissue still present. Small collaged element to last page (postcard detail of skyline of lower Manhattan). Mild rubbing, toning. "From Joseph Cornell" neatly penned in green ink to front cover in an unknown contemporary hand. Very good. MARIA (1954) was privately printed by Cornell in an edition of about 100 copies and given away to his friends as presents. The work was inspired by nineteenth-century opera singer Maria Malibran-Garcia and was produced with the same precision and care Cornell brought to his other work. It is in many ways a Cornell work in book form, not only due to the collaged element present, but also in the appropriation of text, the use of a decorative headpiece from yet another book, and dealing with one of Cornell's signature obsessions. Rare when originally issued and altered by Cornell. A box of leftover copies of MARIA was discovered with Cornell's estate and are seen on the market with some regularity. These are identifiable, however, by a lack of any collage element in the rear of the book, no blue tissue, and their generally fine condition (having been stored in a box for years). Nonetheless, a genuinely scarce book, especially copies augmented and circulated by Cornell himself. OCLC locates one holding (Utah, though another lies among the Donald Windham and Sandy Campbell Papers at Yale) and we find only one additional among museum collections (the Smithsonian). A curious entry in a curious career and an early and under-appreciated artist's book.

        Exploration of the Moon

London: Frederick Muller Ltd,, 1954. Illustrations by R. A. Smith. Text by Arthur C. Clarke. Tall quarto. Original black boards, titles to spine and front board gilt. 45 plates of which 8 are in colour. Extremities faintly rubbed, free endpapers tanned, occasional minor mark to text. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to American playwright and screenwriter Howard E. Koch on the front free endpaper, "To Howard Koch, with all good wishes - Arthur Clark". Howard Koch conducted an interview with Arthur C. Clark as an introduction for The Panic Broadcast, his 1970 book on his experience collaborating with Orson Welles on the latter's legendary radio show The War of the Worlds (1938). Koch's book was adapted in 1975 into a TV film entitled The Night That Panicked America. Koch worked as a screenwriter on a plethora of Hollywood classics, most notably Casablanca, but was blacklisted by the House of Un-American Activities Committee in 1951 and moved to the UK where he worked under the pseudonyms "Peter Howard" and "Anne Rodney". An attractive association copy of this richly illustrated book on the future of space exploration as it stood in 1954, 14 years before the first landing on the moon.

        Vintage Bettie Page Contact Sheet

Miami: n.p., 1954. A vintage 8 by 10 silver gelatin contact sheet, circa 1954 and printed then or within a short time thereafter, by the great Bunny Yeager, from an early session with perhaps her most famous model, the mysterious and profoundly affecting Bettie Page. In near fine condition, with some minor edge wear and a few surface creases and minor imperfections to the print; then too, as a working document, it was not printed to publication or reproduction standards and so shows dust marks and the other small, common blemishes of a work print. However, it is a vintage print, with the distinct feature of a matte finsh that characterizes the photographer's work of that era. (Later printings of the contact sheets, if they happened, were on a glossier paper.) Additionally, the print is signed by Bunny on the reverse. There are few more influential, important and enduring associations betwen artist and model than the one between Bunny Yeager and Bettie Page; perhaps Bert Stern and Marilyn Monroe qualifies as well. It can be argued that Irving Klaw's role in establishing the Bettie Page mystique, while important, was not any more important than Bunny Yeager's; Ms. Yeager's photographs of Bettie had a sunnier, more optimistic aspect that balanced Klaw's darker, more overtly sexual work, and that the counterbalance of the two made Bettie what she was. Vintage prints of this era, either contact or release prints, are extremely uncommon, and vintage prints of Bettie Page are even more so. Price on request.

On Monday I asked Ruth and the boys to come in to see Mamie and me. I then told her of our idea and gave her the original of the enclosed letter, together with a check for more than $18,000. Fifty friends joined in this gift. It seemed a happier thing not to give Ruth the donors\' names and amounts. Needless to say, she was tremendously moved by the gift. Young Adam

Paris: The Olympia Press,, 1954. Octavo. Original card wrappers printed in orange and black. Backstrip a little cocked, some very minor soiling to wrappers, light spotting to edges of text block. An excellent copy. First edition, first impression. From the library of Trocchi's close friend Alex Neish and with the latter's pencil signature on the half-title. As editor of the Scottish magazine Jabberwock (he would later be the editor of Sidewalk) Alex Neish published the first chapter of William Burroughs's Naked Lunch in 1959, after Allen Ginsberg sent him the manuscript without Burroughs's approval. Although Neish never published Trocchi he was an early champion of his work and convinced John Calder to publish him. After Trocchi jumped bail in the US - where he had been prosecuted for selling heroin to a minor - and made his way back to Scotland Neish provided him with a roof at his flat in Edinburgh until Trocchi hit the drugs again and went to London. Neish is also known as one the world's foremost collectors of British pewter. Published one year after the Maurice Girodias founded the Olympia Press, the first edition of Young Adam is, at Girodias's request, a highly 'sexed-up' version of Trocchi's original text.

        OBSESSION [DOMANDA DI GRAZIA] (1954)

C.E.I.A.P. 1954 - Vintage original 54 ½ x 74" (139 x 188 cm.) quattro foglio poster, Italy. Michele Morgan, Raf Vallone, Marthe Mercadier, Jean Gaven, dir: Jean Delannoy; CEIAP. An absolutely stunning portrait of the great film actress Michele Morgan by Ballester. A film noir style based on the short story SILENT AS A GRAVE by Cornell Woolrich, and perhaps the best filmed version of this story. This version was set in a Parisian circus and told the story of how a woman attempts to save her husband, who is sentenced to death. French star Morgan enjoyed a successful run in Hollywood films during the 1940s and still lives today, in France. On linen, VERY GOOD-FINE.

Allen & Unwin, [1954]8vo., Second Impression, on laid paper, with a large folding map in red and black, neat contemporary inscription on front free endpaper; original red cloth, gilt back, red top (lightly faded as usual), a very good, bright, clean copy. BRIGHT, CLEAN COPY OF THE SECOND IMPRESSION OF THE FIRST PART OF THE LORD OF THE RINGS. The request for reprint after so short a time took the printer Jarrolds by surprise, for against instruction they had allowed the type of the first edition to be dispersed. This second impression had therefore to be reset swiftly to meet demand, and Tolkien was not asked to read a new proof. As a result, although four corrections were made to the text of the first edition, many new errors were introduced, several of which remained in place for many years. VERY SCARCE IN THIS CONDITION. Powder River Publishers, [1954]., 1954. First, unexpurgated edition. Cloth, 277pp., illustrated, index. "A thorough study of the trial and execution of Tom Horn...A threatened law suit required the author and publisher to rewrite and replace seven pages of illustrations and text after the volume had been printed and bound, but before it was released. These changes were made by cutting out the deletions and tipping in new sheets. The text pages of 13 and 54 were changed as well as several of the illustrations." Horn was famous as a scout against the Apaches, fought in Arizona's Pleasant Valley War and was a Pinkerton detective before he allegedly became a hired killer of rustlers and homesteaders for the big cattlemen of Wyoming. This is the definitive work on the subject. The rare unexpurgated edition. Fine in fine dust jacket. HERD 1287. SIX GUNS 1256. ADAMS 150 92.

Subsequently, Williams was awarded an honorary membership into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.. Signed by Author. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Exploration of the Moon. Illustrations by R. A. Smith. Text by Arthur C. Clarke.

London: Frederick Muller Ltd, 1954 - Tall quarto. Original black boards, titles to spine and front board gilt. Extremities faintly rubbed, free endpapers tanned, occasional minor mark to text. An excellent copy. 45 plates of which 8 are in colour. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy inscribed by the author to American playwright and screenwriter Howard E. Koch's book was adapted in 1975 into a TV film entitled The Night That Panicked America.
