        Oeuvres complètes I-XXIII *

H.L.Mermod, (Lausanne) 1940-1954.

        A Proper Marriage

London:: Michael Joseph,, 1954. London: Michael Joseph, 1954. First Edition of the author's second novel in her acclaimed Martha Quest series. Octavo. Original cloth. An excellent near fine copy in a very good dustjacket which contains the rare yellow wraparound band stating that Lessing has won the Somerset Maugham Award. Signed by the author on the title page. Rather uncommon with the band present.Doris Lessing has been awarded copiously, most recently including the 2001 David Cohen Prize, 2001 Premio Príncipe de Asturias, and the 2007 Nobel Prize in Literature. A Proper Marriage contributed to her perception as an able writer. It is "[v]ery impressive....Portrays modern woman in all her complexity" (Literary Horizons). "A totally modern work. Martha Quest is, above all, ironically percieved by the author in whose hands irony is an instrument of compassion" (New Republic). "I read the Children of Violence novels and began to understand how a person could write about the problems of the world in a compelling and beautiful way. And it seems to me that as the most important thing I could ever do" (Barbara Kingsolver).

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: The Fellowship of the Ring / The Two Towers / The Return of the King

Boston:: Houghton Mifflin and Company,, 1954-1955.. Boston:: Houghton Mifflin and Company,. 1954-1955. First editions, three volumes. A lovely set overall. The first volume shows a little darkening to the endpapers along the hinge, but is otherwise fine in dust jacket very slightly tanned at spine with just a touch of light soiling and very faint staining. The second volume is bright and fine in a dust jacket showing only very light soiling and a very slight tanning to the spine. The third volume is the first state (Hammond and Anderson A.5iii) and is near fine to fine in bright dust jacket with a few light pen marks, faint staining to rear panel, and shallow chipping to base of spine. Quite an attractive set.

WAR AND PEACE: Translated by Louise and Aylmer Maude with a Foreword by Clifton Fadiman

New York:: Simon & Schuster,, 1954.. New York:: Simon & Schuster,. 1954. The 11th printing of The Inner Sanctum Edition, SPECIALLY BOUND FOR PRESENTATION in full brown leather with page top edges gilt, ribbon place marker and front cover stamped in gilt: "To: Sylvester Weaver . . . with our Compliments / Robert E. Sherwood / Fred Zinnemann / Michael Todd"; printed note from Robert E. Sherwood tipped in reading, "I started reading this book in 1923 and finished in it in 1943, when another would-be world conqueror was bogged down and beaten in the Russian winter. There is material here for hundreds of motion pictures; the problem confronting Mike Todd, Fred Zinnemann and me is to determine which is the best and the most faithful to the immortal spirit of Tolstoi." Special pocket at rear houses a 12-page "Reader's Guide and Bookmark" with list of characters, etc. Hinge darkening where front leaf inserted, rear hinge starting but still tight, few small edge bumps, otherwise near fine. A similar copy, stamped "To Marlon Brando" was sold at Christie's in 2005 for a few thousand dollars. According to Time Magazine (Newsreel, Feb. 14, 1955), before the Dino de Laurentis film came out in 1956, there was a tight race to film WAR AND PEACE -- de Laurentis had his film crew ready but no script when Broadway producer Mike Todd signed Zinnemann on to direct his version and playwright Sherwood to write the script -- of course de Laurentis won, making this just an interesting piece of cinematic history.

        The Book of Beasts

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1954. London: Jonathan Cape,, 1954. Being a translation from a Latin Bestiary of the Twelfth Century made and edited by... Octavo. Original sage cloth, device to upper board and titles to spine in red, top edge red, pictorial endpapers. With the dust jacket. Illustrations in the text throughout. Excellent copy in the dust jacket. First edition, first impression, advance review copy (with a typed note from the publisher tipped in giving notice of misprints etc.), of White's charming mediaeval bestiary. White's chosen epigraphs for the book are wonderfully characteristic in application to the present text, the first from T. H. Huxley (Victorian biologist, grandfather of Aldous), "Ancient traditions, when tested by the severe processes of modern investigation, commonly enough fade away into mere dreams: but it is singular how often the dream turns out to have been a half-waking one, presaging a reality", and the second from the final sentence of 17th-century author Alexander Ross's Arcana Microcosmi: "And as dutiful Children let us cover the Nakednesse of our Fathers with the Cloke of a favourable Interpretation".

        Madame de Pompadour

London: Hamish Hamilton,, 1954. Octavo. Original blue boards, titles to spine in silver, top edge dyed red. With the supplied dust jacket. Illustrated frontispiece and plates. Slight fading to spine and around board edges, very minor rubbing to extremities, faint spotting to edges and endpapers. A very good copy indeed, attractive, in the slightly spine-faded supplied jacket with a few minor marks and tears, and small chips to corners. First edition, first impression, of Mitford's first biography, and one of her best regarded works. This is a presentation copy, inscribed on the half-title to Mitford's close friend and fellow "Bright Young Thing" Anthony Powell and his wife, "To Tony and Violet, with love from, Nancy", with his armorial ex-libris bookplate to the front pastedown. Mitford's background and temperament (which Powell shared) made her perfectly suited to describe the courtly and aristocratic world of pre-Revolutionary France; indeed, her interest in Madame de Pompadour, famous mistress of Louis XV who was notorious for her wit, was probably more than a little autobiographical.

ALIEN MINDS [novel]. TYPED MANUSCRIPT (TMs). 245 leaves, top copy typed on standard-size bond paper with numerous autograph corrections by the author and by his wife. Together with TYPED NOTE SIGNED [TNS] by Evans commenting on this draft

A bit of minor rumpling to a few sheets, one or two edge-tears, but. generally in excellent condition. In an old stationery box. (#118298). The typescript is foliated [1]-13 13-17 17 1/2 18-236 [237: missing] 238- 244 (two consecutive and different pages are numbered "13"; page 237 is missing). The note from Evans states, "This is the draft from which the final draft of this book was made. 'ALIEN MINDS' is the follow-up to 'MAN OF MANY MINDS', and will also be published by Fantasy Press, of Reading, Pa., the end of this year 1954. In addition to my own corrections and changes, you will notice from time to time penciled notes. These were made by my wife, who writes under the name of T. D. Hamm. There were other changes made in the final typing, of course, but the story is essentially as it stands here." The author's assertion notwithstanding, a spot check reveals numerous and in some cases wide divergences between the printed text and the present one. Despite the missing page, a textually significant variant.

The Long Wait (Original Film Poster)

United Artists / Parklane Productions Los Angeles: United Artists / Parklane Productions, 1954. Original one sheet poster for the 1954 film noir. One of the best psychological B-noirs of the 1950s, beautifully photographed by Franz Planer and tightly directed, with a plot strain that is kin to "Somewhere in the Night" (1946) and "Impact" (1949): a newly-minted amnesiac struggling to piece together just exactly how much trouble he's in. In this case, he finds out pretty quickly that he's a murder suspect--the problem is that he doesn't know whether or not he's guilty. A striking illustrated design, bold and immediate. 27 x 41 inches, linen-backed. Near Fine. Selby (1984) 238. Silver and Ward, pp. 176-177.
