Alexander The Great - Volume One & Two Complete

      - This unique and utterly classic two volume library binding was commissioned from The Government Printing Office, in Mauritius, for the bibliophile Sir Robert Scott. Sir Robert was the Governor of Mauritius from March 1954 until July 1959. He had books especially bound for him, and they are exemplary. Such elegant and beautifully crafted works are always expensive, and to commission this standard today would be at least four times the price of this one. Fine bindings are highly sought after collectables. For those seeking unique books, built to last, such books impart a refined impression to a home. If the book is also a timeless classic it becomes a permanent keepsake. These gorgeous books are made to last for centuries. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        The Lord of the Rings

George Allen & Unwin, London 1954 - 3 vol (1st/2nd/1st impressions). 'The Fellowship of the Ring' is a 1st impression. 'The Two Towers' is a 2nd impression. 'The Return of the King' is a 1st impression. All three volumes are firmly and squarely bound in the original red cloth, there is minor bumping and rubbing to the edges, there are some very minor marks to the boards, the gilt lettering to the spine of the 'Two Towers' has tarnished slightly and there is slight rubbing to the edge of the rear board on the 'Fellowship'. The text blocks are slightly age toned, the endpapers more so, with scattered foxing, the topstains are faded, there is a neatly written gift inscription to the front endpaper of 'The Fellowship' dated 1954. A very nice set indeed, particularly 'The Fellowship of the Ring', which with a print run of only 3000 copies is a genuine rarity, it is also pleasing to have them in their original cloth.         Concept Design for the Lincoln Continental (?)

1954. Mixed media on brown composition board with gum arabic. Signed and dated "Hammond 6 - 8- 54". 9 1/2 x 24 3/4 inches. Framed. 21 x 30 7/8 inches. A beautiful concept for a large, two door luxury car The name and logo on the car are so vague that it is not clear whether this beautifully drawn concept is for the Lincoln Continental or not, but it certainly could be. A long, slightly downward sloping line runs from the headlight to the backlight, similar to the Ford Fairlane, but this a larger, more aggressive car with a long hood that comes to a point over a pointed front bumper. The roof is a small missile-like figure. The chrome back fenders and hubcaps add to the richness, as does the two-tone, cappuccino and brown coloring.

Portfolio, 31,5 x 42 cm, 3rd Series. Numbered edition no. 5082. Tunhuang (Dunhuang) is situated in the western part of Kansu Province in Northwest China. It is there that we find the world-famous Thousand-Buddha Caves, a store-house of cultural and art treasures. These caves are really the world's greatest art gallery. From A.D. 366 when the caves were first built, through the Northern Wey dynasty (386 -534), Western Wie dynasty (535-557), Sui dynasty (581-618), Tang dynasty (618-907), the Five dynasties period (907-960), and down to the Sung (960-1270) and Mongol (1279-1368) dynasties-a period of some one thousand years-important works of art have been executed and preserved here. The caves which contain mural paintings now number 469. They range up and down the mountain slopes over a length of 2 1/2 miles. The mural paintings are of large size and deal with many different subjects, fully reflecting the condition of social life in China during many centuries. They are a precious art legacy from the working people of ancient China. The reproductions in this portfolio (12 numbered sheets) show only a tiny part of the mural paintings in the caves.         The Long Ships [Signed Advance Review Copy; Ingraverat] [Rode Orm]

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1954 - A Very Good copy of the first American edition, first printing (mild toning to spine extremities, some corner bumping, a few light spots to the boards), in a Very Good dust jacket (spine toned, some moderate edge wear to the panels, some chipping to the spine ends), SIGNED [INGRAVERAT] BY FRANS G. BENGTSSON on the half-title and with the Publisher's ADVANCE REVIEW SLIP loosely laid in. Set in the tenth Century, the novel centers on Orm, son of a famous pirate who, once shanghaied the Vikings, became a noted warrior himself and took part in raids on Ireland, England, France, and Scandinavia, fighting in battles both on land and at sea. The novel also recreates the coming of Christianity to Scandinavia. Bengtsson's intent in writing the novel was, as he stated, ".to write a story that people could enjoy reading, like The Three Musketeers or the Odyssey." Originally published in Sweden, in two volumes, as "Rode Orm" (1941 and 1945), an English translation of the first volume was published in 1942 as "Red Orm". The most popular of Bengtsson's novels, and one of the most widely-read books in Sweden, the tale has been translated to at least 23 languages. The volume herein described constitutes the first full translation of the entire tale to English. The tale inspired the 1964 movie starring Richard Widmark, Sidney Poitier, and Russ Tamblyn. Signed books by Frans Bengtsson in any language are not at all common to the market and signed copies of the "The Long Ships" in English translation are absolute hen's teeth. A Very Good ADVANCE REVIEW COPY, SIGNED BY FRANS G. BENGTSSON. QUITE SCARCE. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
