[Culver City: Selznick Studios], 1954.. 149 leaves. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only of white, green, yellow and pink paper. Bradbound in stencil-printed wrappers. Upper wrapper a bit sunned and with small scuff, script number at top fore-corner, small nick to one edge of upper wrapper, but very good or better. Hecht wrote the script, featuring adaptations from stories and other material by Steinbeck ("The Leader of the People"), Robert Benchley, Irwin Shaw, Max Shulman, Samuel Clemens, et al, interspersed with interludes and sketches relevant to the spirit of invention, scientific and technological advancement, and the challenges of the modern age. The stars included Judith Anderson, Lauren Bacall, Walter Brennan, Joseph Cotten, Helen Hayes, Robert Benchley, David Niven, Brandon De Wilde, and others, and closed with an address to the audience by the President. King Vidor directed the film sequences, William Wellman the Presidential sequence, Arthur Handley the live staged sequences, with other directors assigned to different components. The telecast was scheduled for 24 October 1954. Very scarce.

        Bonjour Tristesse

Paris: Rene Julliard. [1954]. One of 200 copies printed hors commerce on corvol l'orgueilleux paper, for the author's use, from a total of 230 of the author's first book, inscribed by the author on the half title, "A Max Ph. Delette / avec toute sympathie / Francoise Sagan", which is after the initial March 5, 1954 printing. Small 8vo; 188pp; original tan wrappers printed in black, fine. Francoise Sagan (1935-), wrote BONJOUR TRISTESSE, her first novel when she was just nineteen. Her youth combined with the sophistication of the novel's subject matter and language caused the book to become an international literary event. Masterpieces of Women's Literature remarks, "If Sagan had deliberately set out to write the book that would bring the greatest amount of fame in the shortest amount of time, she need not have done anything differently." It was an immediate bestseller and made its author famous in France and abroad. Since its appearance, Sagan's private life, with her addiction to painkillers, her penchant for fast cars and fast driving resulting in a near fatal crash in 1957, has fascinated the French public. Her work as an author, playwright and filmmaker has won her a quiet respect among her peers. In particular, her first two novels, with their evocation of an almost existential boredom in a middle-class milieu, using the vocabulary of polite everyday speech to describe nuances of emotion, evoking an apparently simple and transparent world, deserve critical attention. Taking her name from a character in Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu (in what is a not so subtle call to attention of her style of analysis of emotion contrasted with his) and the title of her first book from a poem by Paul Eluard, Sagan sought to put herself squarely on the French literary map - and beyond. Using literature to achieve the cult status of Elvis Presley and Andy Warhol, her work is, nonetheless, a strong commentary on popular culture. Although Sagan has publicly allied herself with some feminist causes, it is her work that speaks volumes in this area. Her character, Cecile, in BONJOUR TRISTESSE, transgresses all of the societal norms for women (at that time) and set the pattern for many of her subsequent characters. Yet these characters cannot be reduced to the "vamp" stereotype. Selected by John Updike a one of The New Yorker 50, this novel also won the Prix de critiques for 1954.         AMANTE DES FONTAINES. By Paul Leclère

Paris: [Chez l'auteur], 1954.. Paris: [Chez l'auteur], 1954.. Small octavo. Loose signatures laid into pictorial wrappers. Fine, in lightly worn birch paper board and cloth chemise and slipcase. First edition. Illustrated with nine original engravings by Jacques Houplain. From a total edition of 101 copies (including ten copies hors commerce), this is one of only twelve deluxe copies printed on Japon Nacre, with an additional suite of the engravings on China paper (before letters, and including an additional three planches refusées), and a second suite of the engravings in their final state printed on Japon ancien, one of the original copperplates, one of the original drawings preliminary to the same etching as the copperplate, and a manuscript poem by the author. Houplain is best known for his masterful illustrations for Lautréamont's MALDOROR (1947), but his delightfully sensual engravings in this work result in a polished gem of an entirely different nature, particularly in this enhanced deluxe issue. Houplain's work as illustrator comes in for frequent praise by Strachan. MONOD 6997.

After winning the award, she founded the PEN/Faulkner Award, which is judged by other writers rather than publishing insiders.         Sweet Thursday

New York: Viking Press, 1954. New York: Viking Press, 1954. Second printing. A near fine copy in dust jacket. An excellent presentation copy; inscribed on the front free endpaper by the author, ?For Gene Kelley [sic] one of the blowed in the glass ?bums? John Steinbeck, New Haven. 1 day before opening 1955.? Pipe Dreams, based on Cannery Row, was a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical that opened on Broadway late in 1955 and lasted for eight months, considered a failure for this team. Broadway shows usually ran out-of-town tryouts in Boston, Philadelphia, and New Haven. Kelly, a director and choreographer as well as a dancer and actor, was presumably either a guest or consultant at the New Haven production. In a custom clamshell box.
