First Edition. 8vo., 749pp. "It seems to me that our three basic needs, for food and security and love, are so mixed and mingled and entwined that we cannot straightly think of one without the others. So it happens that when I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the love of it and the hunger for it . . . and then the warmth and richness and fine reality of hunger satisfied . . . and it is all one." Publisher's quarter beige backed brown paper covered boards stamped in gilt & maroon on the upper board & spine. A fine copy [a bit of bottom shelf rubbing] in a near fine dustwrapper. Warmly inscribed on the ffe to Fisher's good friend Avis DeVoto: "To Avis DeVoto, with / admiration and thanks - / Mary Francis / MFK Fisher / Cambridge 3.VIII.66". Fisher's good friend Avis MacVicar DeVoto, [1904 - 1989] was perhaps best known for her friendship with Julia Child & lengthy correspondence tracing the evolution of Volume I of Mastering the Art of French Cooking from its inception to its publication.         The Lord Of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of The King

London: George Allen and Unwin, 1954-1955 First editions, first printings of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, with the terminal fold-out maps tipped in to each volume. The Return of the King with "4" and "sagging" type to page 49, originally designated as first state by Hammond/Anderson, later corrected by Wayne Hammond and noted as a third variant [The Tolkien Collector, Issue 11]. Publisher's red cloth, spines lettered in gilt, red topstains; in the original pictorial dust jackets (Fellowship and Two Towers without blurbs to the rear flap, Return with Observer and Guardian review notices to the rear flap), with illustrations of the Eye of Sauron, the One Ring and its Elvish inscription to the front panels. About near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, a hint of dimming to the spine gilt on Two Towers, minor offsetting to the free endpapers of Fellowship and Two Towers, otherwise bright and fresh pages; unclipped dust jackets, with some light wear and a few nicks to the extremities, a few faint spots to the otherwise bright panels, light rubbing to the hinges, Fellowship with some discreet internal archival repairs to the spine ends and the heads of the flap folds and some rubbing to spine, Two Towers with a short chip to the spine tail and a hint of toning, Return with some rubbing to the spine. Overall, a tight and pleasing set of the epic trilogy. Housed in a custom clamshell box by The Heritage Bindery, with black morocco spine with five raised bands and gilt lettering over marbled boards. The Lord of the Rings is a fantasy trilogy, written as the sequel to Tolkien's 1937 novel The Hobbit. It tells the story of the second attempt of the men, elves, and dwarves of Middle Earth to destroy the Dark Lord Sauron, the "Lord of the Rings." In The Hobbit, set almost 2,000 years after Sauron was initially vanquished, Hobbit Bilbo Baggins discovers Sauron's lost ring, which he used to control the inhabitants of Middle Earth vis-à-vis corrupt leaders whom he gave lesser rings to in order to gain power over them. In The Fellowship of the Ring, Bilbo leaves the ring to his nephew Frodo, who joins with a group of men, hobbits, dwarves, and elves on a quest to destroy it. In The Two Towers, Frodo and Sam continue alone on their increasingly perilous journey to destroy the ring while the remaining members of the Fellowship try to protect the realms of Middle Earth from the troops of Sauron, who continues to gain strength as Frodo brings the Ring closer. The Return of the King concludes the trilogy with the final destruction of Sauron and the reestablishment of proper order in the worlds of men and hobbits. Each volume is divided into two books and contains chapters narrated by different characters.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

The Woman Who Was No More

New York: Rinehart and Company. (1954). First. First American edition. Page edges very slightly browned, still fine in fine dustwrapper. An exceptionally uncommon title, the first book by this French team to be published in the U.S. Basis for the classic Henri-Georges Clouzot film Les Diaboliques, with Simone Signoret and the director's wife Vera Clouzot, in which the two women conspire to murder their sadistic husband/lover. The film is arguably the best psychological thriller of all time, and one from which many of the conventions of the genre stem. Alfred Hitchcock, already well-established as the "Master of Suspense," was upset at having missed the film rights to this book and took special care to acquire the rights to Boileau and Narcejac's follow-up, which became Vertigo. Later remade several times, including a 1994 version with Sharon Stone and Isabelle Adjani. Translated from the French and published before the film was released, this had a very small print run, perhaps as few as a thousand copies. Considering the cheap leftover wartime materials employed, it is unlikely to have survived in any numbers. This is the nicest copy we've seen. .

Go Tell It on the Mountain [and] Giovanni's Room

London [and] New York: Michael Joseph [and] The Dial Press. (1954) [and] (1956). First. First English edition of Go Tell It on the Mountain and first edition of Giovanni's Room. Each book is fine in fine dustwrapper. Housed together in a custom cloth clamshell case with morocco spine label gilt. Each book is very warmly Inscribed to Beauford Delaney, the celebrated African-American artist who Baldwin often referred to as his "spiritual mentor." Both Delaney and Baldwin were the sons of preachers and struggled with coming to terms with their homosexuality. The 40-year-old Delaney painted the 16-year-old Baldwin in the nude, and though there is no evidence they were lovers, they remained devoted to each other, first when they both moved to Paris in the 1950s, until Delany's death in a mental institution in 1977. The Inscription in Go Tell It on the Mountain (which also has a publisher's presentation slip laid in) reads: "For Beauford - With all my love, and with my gratitude - Jimmy '54, Paris." The Inscription in Giovanni's Room reads: ""For Beauford - With my love, Jimmy. Nov. '56, Corsica. Praise God for trials past." A spectacular and meaningful association, Baldwin's first book, a coming-of-age novel, and his second book, one of the most important, and perhaps the most influential gay novel, about an American man living in Paris and his relationships with the men he meets in a Paris gay bar. .

Abelard - Schuman, [1954]., 1954. First edition of this scarce title by Evan Hunter under this pseudonym, less well-known than his Ed McBain nom de plume. Fine in dust jacket with light wear to the spine ends and corners, with small crease and closed tear to top edge of front cover. Josh Blake is a literary agent who, on arriving at his office one Monday morning, finds his partner dead in front of the unlocked safe. Was his partner murdered because of the movie agreement the agency had with the best-selling author of Westerns? Or was it his beautiful wife who grew tired of his philandering? Or could it have been his jealous mistress? The lucrative agreement is missing and the agency can't survive without it, so Josh Blake sets out to find it.

Autograph Letter Signed to Composer Daniel Jones about Erich Fried translating Dylan Thomas.

Edith Sitwell, London 1954 - Sitwell, Edith [Dylan Thomas], [Daniel Jones]. Autograph Letter Signed to Composer Daniel Jones about Erich Fried translating Dylan Thomas. London: 22 March 1954. 8vo., 4pp. A very chatty letter. "I have of course been meaning to write to you to tell you how much I liked your songs.I believe that Erich Fried a friend of mine, has written to you about his translation of Under Milk Wood. Dearest Dan, do please see that Erich gets the rights as it is really a service to Dylan too. I spoke to Dylan about his translations of his poems which were quite uncannily good. In fact the only ones that were. He has a really great gift and above all an unusual talent for words, in fact he is the only person writing in German who comes near to Dylan's way of using words. Please ring when you are in town. You can always stay with us you know. / All my best love to you & / Irene. / Yours Edith". An excellent letter in fine condition. Thomas' closest & oldest friend was Dr. Daniel Jones. Dan Jones edited Dylan Thomas's POEMS in addition to writing the preface & all of the original music for 'Under Milk Wood' & publishing: "My Friend Dylan Thomas". $1775 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Autograph music manuscript, "Ossity Hongroise, op. trente"

n.p. [Paris?], n.d [ca. 1920-1954] - A lyrical piece in A minor, with a central section in A major, composed for the piano and inscribed by Lionel Barrymore to his sister: "Dédieé à Mlle. Ethel Barrymore." Barrymore composed a variety of music, from solo pieces to large orchestral works, and received performances by the New York Philharmonic and the Philadelphia Orchestra. The meaning of the title ("Eccentric Hungarian"?) is not clear to us, but in any case this is a wonderful association between two of the greatest American actors of the first half of the 20th century 4to. 3 pp. pen and ink, 68 bars, piano score on printed music staff paper. Toned, small closed tears and edgewear; still a playable fair copy
