Maria

New York: Salamander Editions, 1954. 4to (5½ x 4¼ inches). Engraved vignette, small color image of the Manhattan skyline mounted on last page; original blue tissue preserved. Stapled in original printed wraps. A virtually untouched example. Provenance: Sylvia Pedlar (1900-1972), American fashion designer. A SUPERB COPY OF CORNELL'S SCARCE ARTIST'S BOOK, printed in an edition of 100 copies, this one of those with an original image Cornell mounted in personalized copies, and accompanied by a letter presenting the pamphlet to American fashion designer Sylvia Pedlar (1902-1982). [With:] CORNELL, Joseph. Typed letter signed ("Joseph Cornell") to Sylvia Pedlar, 3708 Utopia Parkway, Flushing, NY, 27 May 1956. One page, 4to, on Valley Onion Skin. Reading: "Long before the EGAN GALLERY suspended operation I have thought back to the pleasant occasion of meeting you there with Mr. [Bradley Walker] Tomlin. It is hard to take, - the news of his passing. Enclosed something more nostalgic than the WEATHER PROPHET [his 1954 assemblage], a little private printing of an aspect of 'exploration' which I hope to have more news of one of these days." Cornell had his first show at the Charles Egan Gallery in 1949. By 1956, when Cornell presented this book, Sylvia Pedlar was a leading designer of lingerie, having studied at Cooper Union and the Art, Students League. She launched her business, Iris Lingerie, in 1929. Though she hated the term, she is credited with creating the super short "baby doll" nighties - a clever response to the fabric shortage during the Second World War. She is also known for adapting the Roman toga to the American nightgown. Cornell refers to the New York Abstract Expressionist Bradley Walker Tomlin, who had died in May 1953 having had a heart attack after visiting Jackson Pollack in Long Island. 'Maria', an appropriated text translated by Cornell from Elise Polko's original prose-poem, reflects Cornell's obsession with opera, and with Maria Malibran in particular. A cache of the pamphlets were found in Cornell's estate after his death, all lacking the blue tissue guard and the mounted image at end. This early example is among those Cornell specially personalized for notable friends. Lynda Roscoe Hartigan proposes that Cornell turned to other creative activities in the 1950s due to his ambivalent attitude towards his constructions. He was periodically expanding his 'Portrait of Ondine, GC44' from 1951 on, filling it with printed matter, notes, and excerpts in the manner of Duchamp's Valises. He published 'Maria' and 'Bel Canto Pet' (1955) at his own expense, in the manner of the French feuilletons (see Hartigan, "Joseph Cornell: A Biography" in 'Joseph Cornell,' ed. Kynaston McShine, New York: MOMA, 1980, pp. 108-109).

        A Fable

New York: Random House, 1954. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. 1st edition, the deluxe limited issue. 1 of 1,000 numbered, signed by Faulkner. Fine in near fine original tissue dustjacket and slipcase. A common issue of a common book, with 2 dozen copies of this limited, signed state always out there for sale, some of them at 3 times our price, and yet, they are in inferior condition or lacking the tissue dustjacket, so it isn't so common that you can buy one like this. The reasons vary why a particular book's supply overwhelms its demand, but in this case it's simply because everybody else's copies are overpriced. Compare our fine one, in the often missing jacket (also fine), and its fine slipcase. So excuse the redundancy, but all the books in this catalog are priced so that nobody has a finer copy at our price and nobody has an equal copy for less. In May, 1918 German and French troops faced each other at dawn from trenches on the Western Front but the French refused to attack and the Germans (who were expected to take advantage of this mutiny) did not move either. At noon the whole sector stopped firing and soon the rest of the front came to a standstill. French General Gragnon demanded his own arrest and the execution of all 3,000 members of his regiment. 2 days later the troops arrived in Chaulnesmont where the dishonor perceived to have been brought on the town, roused the people to near riot. Insiders knew that a corporal and his squad of 12, moving mysteriously behind the lines, had succeeded in spreading among the soldiers, seditious ideas about peace on earth and good will toward men. So begins Faulkner's amazing juxtaposition of World War I and the Passion of Christ, a gigantically ambitious novel, 9 years in the writing, that combines 2 different types of narrative, an allegorical fable based on parallels between the events in his novel and events in the original myth, and a realist tale of war, politics and personal relationships. One of few Faulkner novels not set in Yoknapatawpha County, under appreciated but as heavy as novels get. It's filled with power, provocation, stimulation, and abstract concepts, and our copy seems to be the only one for sale, with all 3 of its pieces in nice condition and fairly priced, so you are going to be the only kid who buys one of these who doesn't get ripped off.

Original Vintage German Theatre Poster Advertising Der Kaukasische Kreidekreis (The Caucasian Chalk Circle) The Berliner Ensemble

Printed First German Production 1954. 1954., 1954. 47'' x 32'' original one sheet lobby or outside advertisement poster for Der Kaukasische Kreidekreis (The Caucasian Chalk Circle). The Berliner Ensemble gathered some of the greatest cultural and artistic talent in Germany and commissioned Karl Von Appen to design this poster. The play is by the German modernist playwright Bertolt Brecht. An example of Brecht's epic theatre, the play is a parable about a peasant girl who rescues a baby and becomes a better mother than its wealthy natural parents. It was written in 1944 while Brecht was living in the United States. It was translated into English by Brecht's friend and admirer Eric Bentley and its world premiere was a student production at Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota, in 1948. Its first professional production was at the Hedgerow Theatre, Philadelphia, directed by Bentley. This very rare poster represents the German premiere by the Berliner Ensemble on October 7, 1954, at the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in Berlin, and is dated 1954. The Berliner Ensemble is a German theatre company established by Bertolt Brecht and his wife, Helene Weigel in January 1949 in East Berlin. 100 mm x 50 mm piece of paper missing to the top left hand corner, repaired tears to the reverse edges. Sent rolled in a tube with end caps. We currently hold in stock over 100 other English and foreign theatre and cinema posters. Member of the P.B.F.A.

        David Ben-Gurion

October 13, 1954. Autograph Letter Signed “D. Ben-Gurion” in Hebrew, one page, 4.5” x 8.25”. Lightweight paper; numbered “42” from Ben-Gurion’s writing pad. Sdeh Boker, Israel, October 13, 1954. To Ze’ev Zanfet, Kfar Hayarok. Rough edges. Very good condition.

In full, “The many troubles here prevented me from replying to your letter immediately. I will not be able to write a special critical article on the subject. There is nothing to be critical about – rather a call for a settlement mission. You should act so that the newspaper participates. Preparing a large settlement operation of young people and discharging soldiers. In approximately one month, there will be a convention of the candidates for this settlement.” With original envelope addressed in another hand to Zanfet in Hebrew, postmarked Israeli postage stamp, Ben-Gurion’s name and kibbutz penned on verso, not by Ben-Gurion.

“Haaretz” is Israel’s oldest daily newspaper. From a 2009 story by Amos Harel on Haaretz.com, in part, “An educational presentation about the 1954 Lavon affair prepared by the Military Intelligence history and heritage division found that MI had not sufficiently trained the members of the sabotage unit, who were mostly amateurs and included several Egyptian Jews, and had failed to give them cover stories, plan escape routes or otherwise plan for the possibility that they would be caught … The Lavon affair … was a plan to discredit Egypt’s government, then headed by Gamal Abdel Nasser, by bombing theaters, post offices and U.S. and British institutions, and making it seem as though Egypt was behind the bombings. The thinking in Israel at the time was that if the British were to give up control of the Suez Canal, it would be left in Egypt’s hands, putting Cairo in a better position to exert pressure on Israel. The agents were told ‘to undermine the West’s trust in the [Egyptian] government by causing public insecurity’ while concealing Israel’s role in the sabotage. However, the agents were caught. One committed suicide in prison, two were hanged and four got long prison terms…”

The bombings and capture of the Israeli agents took place in July 1954. In a Commission of Inquiry into the Affair published in December 1960, Pinhas Lavon, the Defense Minister at the time of the capture of the spies in 1954, was declared not guilty of authorizing the operation. Motke Ben-Tzur, head of a section of Military Intelligence in 1954, had been dismissed in October 1954, at the time Ben-Gurion wrote this letter. Pinhas Lavon resigned from the post of Defense Minister on January 2, 1955 and was succeeded by Ben-Gurion himself. Binyamin Gibli, the Director of Military Intelligence, was also replaced. By the end of 1955, Ben-Gurion was again Prime Minister.
