        The Lord of the Rings

London: George Allen and Unwin, 1954-55 - Three volumes. Folding map in each volume. Return of the King is second state with sig. 4 and slipped type on p. 49 (this was formerly Hammond’s first state, but the bibliographer has revised his opinion). Original red cloth and printed dust jackets. Bookplate. Fine in very good fine dust jackets with slight wear, minor stains, tanning to the spines. An attractive set. FIRST EDITIONS, FIRST PRINTINGS. This is a very attractive set of the celebrated Lord of the Rings trilogy. The size of the edition was small: The Fellowship of the Ring (3000 copies), The Two Towers (3250 copies), and The Return of the King (7000 copies). Tolkien worked on this epic, not so much a trilogy as a long novel, from the publication of The Hobbit (1937) until the early 1950s. Beginning with the appearance of the second edition of 1966 and the nearly simultaneous appearance of the paperback edition in America, The Lord of the Rings became one of the best-selling works of fiction of the century. This is the “paradigmatic work of modern heroic fantasy. . . . Its success was not immediate, but its publication in paperback was an event sufficiently momentous to transform completely the market situation of heroic fantasy, and hence bring about a new era in its history. The Lord of the Rings made fantasy a significant publishing category and inspired a deluge of new works. The astonishing reception and influence of this work qualify it as one of the most remarkable literary phenomena of the 20th century” (Barron, ed., Fantasy Literature).         V-2

New York: The Viking Press, 1954. First American Edition, 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good +/good +. Octavo, 281pp., illustrated. A good or better copy, gently soiled with mild wear at the spine ends. In a good or perhaps better dust jacket ($5.00 price intact) with some creasing and mild chipping along the extremities. Spine less sunned than usually seen on this title. A marvelous copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Dornberger to Hans-Georg Clamann, a fellow German scientist who was (along with Dornberger) brought to the US in Operation Paperclip. The three-line inscription is in German and in a rather cryptic hand, but it is easy to read his note below the inscription: "Randolph Field, der 16 Juni 1955." Randolph Field is an Air Force base near San Antonio, which is appropriate, as both of these scientists were brought to the US in the custody of the Air Force just a few years earlier. Signed copies of this book are scarce, and the association makes this an even more desirable example. On a rear free blank there is a somewhat unexpected (considering the book's subject) pencil inscription in French, also dated 1955, with two pasted-in stickers: "Pour mon cheri Valentine 1955 de ta femme qui t'aime." It's unclear how, or if, this relates to the association above. Images of such available upon request.

The Lord of the Rings. Being: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King.

London: George Allen and Unwin, 1954, 1954, 1955. [Fantasy classic]. FIRST EDITIONS, First impressions; signature '4' and 'sagging' type on p.49 of 'The Return', folding maps at rear of each volume. 3 volumes. Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles to spines, red tint to top edges, in original dust-wrappers. No inscriptions, bookplates or ownership marks, all prices present. Some toning/spotting to endpapers otherwise clean within, cloth lightly handled, red topstain unfaded. Jackets with uniform wear, a little toned to spines, lightly chipped/frayed to extremities, some discreet archival strips to reverse side simply to stabilise tears at folds (not in-filled, touched-up or re-coloured). Overall a natural, used set with a most respectable appearance. Following the hugely successful children's book 'The Hobbit' (1937), Tolkien found himself under intense pressure to produce a sequel, despite wanting to publish different stories from the vast mythological landscape he had been creating since encountering the 'Kalevala' in his teenage years. Eventually these two forces came together to produce the long-expected sequel, set amidst momentous events at the end of the Third Age of Middle Earth, together with many details of the languages, legends and pedigrees he had created from scratch in order fill what he considered a great hole in England's mythological past. Possibly the greatest Fantasy Novel the English-speaking world has yet seen. Hammond and Anderson [A5], listed in Time Magazine; 100 Best Modern Novels. Book Collector No.274, p58-9.
