London: Jonathan Cape. 1954 - FIRST IMPRESSION, FIRST ISSUE. Octavo, pp.240. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards, stamped in gilt, with purple dust-wrapper. An attractive copy, housed in a custom-made clamshell box. .Beautiful, fortune-telling Solitaire is the prisoner (and tool) of Mr. Big - master of fear, artist in crime, and Voodoo Baron of Death. James Bond has no time for superstition - he knows that Big is also a top SMERSH operative and a real threat. More than that, after tracking him through the jazz joints of Harlem to the Everglades and on the Caribbean, 007 has realized that Mr. Big is one of the most dangerous men he has ever faced, and nobody, not even the enigmatic Solitaire, can be sure how their battle of wills is going to end. David Ben-Gurion

October 13, 1954. Autograph Letter Signed “D. Ben-Gurion” in Hebrew, one page, 4.5” x 8.25”. Lightweight paper; numbered “42” from Ben-Gurion’s writing pad. Sdeh Boker, Israel, October 13, 1954. To Ze’ev Zanfet, Kfar Hayarok. Rough edges. Very good condition.

In full, “The many troubles here prevented me from replying to your letter immediately. I will not be able to write a special critical article on the subject. There is nothing to be critical about – rather a call for a settlement mission. You should act so that the newspaper participates. Preparing a large settlement operation of young people and discharging soldiers. In approximately one month, there will be a convention of the candidates for this settlement.” With original envelope addressed in another hand to Zanfet in Hebrew, postmarked Israeli postage stamp, Ben-Gurion’s name and kibbutz penned on verso, not by Ben-Gurion.

“Haaretz” is Israel’s oldest daily newspaper. From a 2009 story by Amos Harel on Haaretz.com, in part, “An educational presentation about the 1954 Lavon affair prepared by the Military Intelligence history and heritage division found that MI had not sufficiently trained the members of the sabotage unit, who were mostly amateurs and included several Egyptian Jews, and had failed to give them cover stories, plan escape routes or otherwise plan for the possibility that they would be caught … The Lavon affair … was a plan to discredit Egypt’s government, then headed by Gamal Abdel Nasser, by bombing theaters, post offices and U.S. and British institutions, and making it seem as though Egypt was behind the bombings. The thinking in Israel at the time was that if the British were to give up control of the Suez Canal, it would be left in Egypt’s hands, putting Cairo in a better position to exert pressure on Israel. The agents were told ‘to undermine the West’s trust in the [Egyptian] government by causing public insecurity’ while concealing Israel’s role in the sabotage. However, the agents were caught. One committed suicide in prison, two were hanged and four got long prison terms…”

The bombings and capture of the Israeli agents took place in July 1954. In a Commission of Inquiry into the Affair published in December 1960, Pinhas Lavon, the Defense Minister at the time of the capture of the spies in 1954, was declared not guilty of authorizing the operation. Motke Ben-Tzur, head of a section of Military Intelligence in 1954, had been dismissed in October 1954, at the time Ben-Gurion wrote this letter. Pinhas Lavon resigned from the post of Defense Minister on January 2, 1955 and was succeeded by Ben-Gurion himself. Binyamin Gibli, the Director of Military Intelligence, was also replaced. By the end of 1955, Ben-Gurion was again Prime Minister.

防空常識挂图.[Fang kong chang shi gua tu].[Chinese Propaganda Poster Set (Incomplete) - Air Defence Common Knowledge].

[北京].[Beijing].: No publication details.. (circa1970).. Coloured Chinese Air Defence broken run of 5 posters. Each poster in this small collection is numbered. The collection is made up of poster numbers 10, 11, 12, 13 and 16. The posters are in secondhand condition. Two are poorer condition than the others as there is loss along a margin of each, although this loss does not affecting the images themselves. There is creasing and wear and tear particularly at edges and one poster is damp stained. There are some tape repairs on the reverse, one Text in Chinese. Poster sheets measure appoximately 54 x 77.5 cm. Poster no. 10 shows 3 images which demonstrate the methods which could be used to fire at enemy aeroplanes. The images are accompanied by detailed instructions. The speed and size of the aeroplane, and the angle from which the shot is taken and the distance from the target are all taken into consideration. A chart in the centre gives details of how to prepare in advance for shooting an enemy aircraft. The chart gives details of how to calculate the plane's length taking into account its size and distance to make sure of an accurate shot. Poster no. 11 shows 3 images which demonstrate methods to fire at enemy paratroopers, again with detailed instructions of how to do this. A chart in the centre gives details of how to prepare in advance for shooting an enemy aircraft. The chart gives details of how to calculate the plane's length taking into account its size and distance to make sure of an accurate shot. Poster no. 12 depicts 5 images showing various anti-aircraft firing positions. They are: position for one person to lift and stabilise the rifle while the other person aims; position aided by fortification; position aided by tree branches; position aided by walls; and kneeling position. Poster no. 13 includes 5 images showing two squads (rifle shooting squad and machine gun shooting squad) who are in charge of the anti-aircraft placement and the three main targeted aircraft (bomber, military cargo aircraft and helicopter) which these squads wish to shoot. Poster no. 16 includes 6 images showing plans and the actions required to rescue, perform urgent repairs, and maintain law and order. Each with detailed instructions. It suggests: to report to the relevant government agency and evacuate nearby civilians unexploded bombs are discovered; during air strikes, lay down perimeters around shops to prevent from looting; to restore transportation by clearing roads immediately after air raids; to urgently repair damaged electric wires and water pipes; the major patrol sites: factories, shops, warehouses, dams, bridges and the power station, and to arrest suspects if necessary; to put out fire immediately and to make sure the safety of the civilians are the most important. 中國人民解放軍總參謀部動員部[Mobilization Division of People's Liberation Army General Staff Department] was first formed in 1954 and later joined with 中国人民解放军总参谋部军务部 [Military Division of People's Liberation Army General Staff Department] to form a joint division in 1969. The Division returned to its original name in 1975. .

The Lord of the Rings. The Fellowship of the Rings-The Two Towers- The Return of the King.

London George Allen and Unwin -5 1954 - First editions, 3 volumes, 8vo., first editions, publisher's uniform red cloth, spines lettered and stamped in gilt; top edges stained red, comprising: The Fellowship of the Ring, 423, [1, colophon] pp., signature mark "4" at the bottom of page 49; map tipped to rear endpaper, ownership signature, light offsetting to endpapers and rear hinge just starting, [together with:] The Two Towers, 352 pp., map tipped to rear endpaper, over-opened at pages 64-65 and pages 144-145, causing a couple sprung gatherings, with light foxing on preliminary and terminal leaves [and] The Return of the King, variant three with signature mark '4' present on page forty-nine and lines 'sagging' in the middle, originally designated as first state by Hammond/Anderson, later corrected by Wayne Hammond [The Tolkien Collector, Issue 11], 416 pp., map attached to rear endpaper, boards slightly bowed, page edges lightly foxed, occasional minor over-opening, topstain faded, crease along upper edge of page 415/416, professionally restored original dust-jackets, upper corners of first softly bumped, the third title in second state with reviewer blurbs for the first two titles on the rear flap, price clipped, all three with light fading to spine panels, still an attractive, very good set. At first, Tolkien intended The Lord of the Rings to be a children's tale in the style of The Hobbit, but it quickly grew darker and more serious in the writing. Though a direct sequel to The Hobbit, it addressed an older audience, drawing on the immense back-story of Beleriand that Tolkien had constructed in previous years, and which eventually saw posthumous publication in The Silmarillion and other volumes. Tolkien's influence weighs heavily on the fantasy genre that grew following the success of The Lord of the Rings. Hammond and Anderson A5 i, ii, iii. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Lord of the Rings Being: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King

London: George Allen and Unwin, 1954, 1954, 1955.. [Fantasy classic]. FIRST EDITIONS, First impressions; signature '4' and 'sagging' type on p.49 of 'The Return', folding maps at rear of each volume. 3 volumes. Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles to spines, red tint to top edges, in original dust-wrappers. No inscriptions, bookplates or ownership marks, all prices present. Some toning/spotting to endpapers otherwise clean within, cloth lightly handled, red topstain unfaded. Jackets with uniform wear, a little toned to spines, lightly chipped/frayed to extremities, some discreet archival strips to reverse side simply to stabilise tears at folds (not in-filled, touched-up or re-coloured). Overall a natural, used set with a most respectable appearance. Following the hugely successful children's book 'The Hobbit' (1937), Tolkien found himself under intense pressure to produce a sequel, despite wanting to publish different stories from the vast mythological landscape he had been creating since encountering the 'Kalevala' in his teenage years. Eventually these two forces came together to produce the long-expected sequel, set amidst momentous events at the end of the Third Age of Middle Earth, together with many details of the languages, legends and pedigrees he had created from scratch in order fill what he considered a great hole in England's mythological past. Possibly the greatest Fantasy Novel the English-speaking world has yet seen.

        The Lord of the Rings

London: George Allen and Unwin, 1954-55 - Three volumes. Folding map in each volume. Return of the King is second state with sig. 4 and slipped type on p. 49 (this was formerly Hammond’s first state, but the bibliographer has revised his opinion). Original red cloth and printed dust jackets. Bookplate. Fine in very good fine dust jackets with slight wear, minor stains, tanning to the spines. An attractive set. FIRST EDITIONS, FIRST PRINTINGS. This is a very attractive set of the celebrated Lord of the Rings trilogy. The size of the edition was small: The Fellowship of the Ring (3000 copies), The Two Towers (3250 copies), and The Return of the King (7000 copies). Tolkien worked on this epic, not so much a trilogy as a long novel, from the publication of The Hobbit (1937) until the early 1950s. Beginning with the appearance of the second edition of 1966 and the nearly simultaneous appearance of the paperback edition in America, The Lord of the Rings became one of the best-selling works of fiction of the century. This is the “paradigmatic work of modern heroic fantasy. . . . Its success was not immediate, but its publication in paperback was an event sufficiently momentous to transform completely the market situation of heroic fantasy, and hence bring about a new era in its history. The Lord of the Rings made fantasy a significant publishing category and inspired a deluge of new works. The astonishing reception and influence of this work qualify it as one of the most remarkable literary phenomena of the 20th century” (Barron, ed., Fantasy Literature). V-2

New York: The Viking Press, 1954. First American Edition, 1st Printing. Hardcover. Good +/good +. Octavo, 281pp., illustrated. A good or better copy, gently soiled with mild wear at the spine ends. In a good or perhaps better dust jacket ($5.00 price intact) with some creasing and mild chipping along the extremities. Spine less sunned than usually seen on this title. A marvelous copy, SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Dornberger to Hans-Georg Clamann, a fellow German scientist who was (along with Dornberger) brought to the US in Operation Paperclip. The three-line inscription is in German and in a rather cryptic hand, but it is easy to read his note below the inscription: "Randolph Field, der 16 Juni 1955." Randolph Field is an Air Force base near San Antonio, which is appropriate, as both of these scientists were brought to the US in the custody of the Air Force just a few years earlier. Signed copies of this book are scarce, and the association makes this an even more desirable example. On a rear free blank there is a somewhat unexpected (considering the book's subject) pencil inscription in French, also dated 1955, with two pasted-in stickers: "Pour mon cheri Valentine 1955 de ta femme qui t'aime." It's unclear how, or if, this relates to the association above. Images of such available upon request.
