Photo taken in Korea where Marilyn went to entertain the troops during her honeymoon with Joe DiMaggio

[Korea] "Original probably unpublished photograph, black & white, 3.75? x 5?. Tape remnant on verso. Minor dings. Fine condition. In February 1954, Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio were newlyweds on a trip to Japan, when the bride took a detour to Korea to entertain the troops. She performed ten shows in four days, February 16-19, 1954, in front of audiences that totaled more than 100,000 soldiers. Later Monroe recalled that the trip ?was the best thing that ever happened to me. I never felt like a star before in my heart. It was so wonderful to look down and see a fellow smiling at me.?This photograph depicts Marilyn Monroe the day she performed before the 7th Infantry Division in Korea on February 16, 1954. She is wearing her purple cocktail gown and long-sleeve jacket. With an 8.5? x 11? reproduction of page 3 of the February 18, 1954 edition of the ?Los Angeles Times.? In the upper right is a 2.5? x 3.25? photograph captioned ??Anything Goes? ?" Curvaceous Marilyn Monroe, wearing her famous purple cocktail gown, entertains 7th Division troops in Korea in show ?Anything Goes.??Included is a photocopy of a 10? x 8? signed photograph (?Love and Kisses / Marilyn Monroe?). Photocopy of verso is also present with caption by Corporal Fishman: ?L. to R. me! Marilyn Monroe. My Photo Officer Lt. Belche. Vic Congeloso & Julio Andajar. we where [sic] shooting Picture of her at the Generals Mess after a USO Show she put on for the troops Feb, 1954 ?" over my Right Shoulder is Lefty O?Douls wife. of the N.Y. Yankees.? With a photocopy of another 10? x 8? photograph depicting Marilyn Monroe, someone seemingly adjusting something on her left shoulder, and Corporal Joseph Fishman, with camera in hand, which Fishman identified on verso (photocopy included) as ?that?s me working! Korea Feb 1954?.Also present are photocopies of five other 3.75? x 5? photographs taken on February 16, 1954. Three depict Marilyn Monroe alone (two performing in her purple cocktail gown), one is with Major General Lionel Charles McGarr who was commander of the 7th Infantry Division from October 1953 to May 1954, and one is with Maj. Gen. McGarr and Mrs. Lefty O?Doul."

        Temple Song

Stuttgardt: (Frederic Prokosch). 1954. First. First edition. Marbled paper self-wrappers with printed gold foil label. 24mo. Faint vertical bend to the right hand extremities, else fine. Out of a total edition of 44 copies, this is copy "2" of 10 numbered copies in paper from Hannover. Inscribed by the author. Extra label tipped-in. A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books". Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions", which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. Additionally he reprinted some of the books between 1978-1980, but the provenance of this book, and the owner's notes that accompany the book indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. Additionally he reprinted some of the books between 1978-1980, but the provenance of this book, and the owner's notes that accompany the book indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. Rare. OCLC locates four copies in institutions. .

Hjalmar Schacht For and Against Hitler - a Political-Economic Study of Germany 1923-1945

The Christopher Publishing House, Boston, 1954, Hard Cover, Book Condition: Good+, First EditionSize: 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall, 416 pages. Bibliography. Footnotes. "The purpose here is to re-examine the record, in order better to appreciate the past and present problems of Europe, political and economic. The career of this man happens to be an excellent mirror for those problems: why democracy fell in Germany (as it had in much of the world); why the unspeakable Nazi came to despotic power over one of the most cultured and civilized nations of the world; whether dictatorships are better qualified to deal with the complexities of industrial life; why foreign trade in the post-war world departed so far from the cherished principles of the nineteenth century; how and why war came to Europe and the world in 1939; how the citizen can react to the modern police state; what can be done to remove a modern dictator or whether it is possible at all; whether one major trend of the modern world, class struggle, can be replaced by the other, nationalism; whether 'strong-man-rule' is the proper solution to the 'Bolshevik Danger'; what action can be taken to curb the dominant trend in the economy toward inflation; how should peace-loving powers treat a fanatical dictator - with force or with conciliation. It is a study of these basic problems of modern civilization rather than merely as the study of an individual who sought and obtained world-wide fame that this work was attempted." - from Foreward. Light wear. Sunning to spine. Clean and unmarked. Binding sound. A quality copy.

        The Chemical Basis of Morphogenesis

London and New York: Cambridge University Press, 1954. First Edition. Cloth. Near Fine. First Edition. vii, 605 pages. 4to. Publisher's original red cloth with gilt spine lettering and simple square embossed edge decorations on boards. A beautiful copy with corner tips bumped, and a bit of wear to the spine panel. In Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London, Series B, Volume 237, Biological Sciences. Entire volume offered. The Turing paper is found on pages 37-72. Cloth. "Morphogenesis is the biological process that causes an organism to develop its shape. It is one of three fundamental aspects of developmental biology along with the control of cell growth and cellular differentiation." (wikipedia)"Alan Turing's paper, 'The chemical basis of morphogenesis' ... has been hugely influential in a number of areas. In this paper, Turing proposed that biological pattern formation arises in response to a chemical pre-pattern, which, in turn, is set up by a process which is now known as diffusion-driven instability. The genius of this work was that he considered a system which was stable in the absence of diffusion and then showed that the addition of diffusion, which is naturally stabilizing, actually caused an instability. Thus, it was the integration of the parts that was as crucial to the understanding of embrylogical development as the parts themselves - patterns emerged or self-organized as a result of the individual parts interacting. To see how far ahead of his time he was, one has to note that it is only now in the post-genomic era of systems biology that the majority of the scientific community has arrived at the conclusion he came to some 60 years ago." "Applications of Turing's work to developmental biology are too numerous to list but include limb development, pigmentation patterning, hair and feather germ formation, tooth morphogenesis, phyllotaxis, hydra patterning and regeneration. Moreover, ideas of self-organisation now abound in biology, chemistry, and ecology. The stimulus for a lot of this work stems from Turing's original ideas. Thus, his paper has significantly advanced the field and the paper is being cited almost everyday." Surprisingly rare in the marketplace. We have found only one copy of this paper offered in recent history, the offprint issue which sold at Christies in 2013 for nearly $20,000. Perhaps it's rarity comes from the fact that it was little known or accepted (unlike Watson and Crick and their work in the same time period) and so didn't end up in everyone's filing cabinet. (Cooper and van Leeuwen, Alan Turing his work and impact, p684-5).

My Flight to Venus / Signed Presentation/Association Copy to Max Miller

San Gabriel, CA: Willing Publishing Company, 1954 San Gabriel, CA: Willing Publishing Company, 1954. First edition. Signed by Dana Howard and inscribed to UFOlogist Max Miller on the ffep verso. Illustrated wrappers; 89 pp. Cover illustration by Norman Yeckley. Small scare edgewear, primarily at top edge; faint soiling on portion of front cover; marginal age-toning. Very good plus or better; very handsome condition. Dana Howard's first book about Venus as she claimed it actually is. Pursuant to a seance with medium Beatrice Lilly Candler in April of 1955, Howard became the third well-know claimed alien contactee, after Albert Coe in the twenties and George Adamski in 1952. A spiritualist sort from childhood - along the lines of a new-agey person today - she differed from other contactees in that she was not impressed with what was to her a faddish the notion of UFOs, and was not contacted that way herself. Later books by Howard include Diane: She Came From Venus, Over the Threshold, Vesta, the Earthborn Venusian, Up Rainbow Hill, The Keys to the Citadel of Space, The Strange Case of T.Lobsang Rampa, and The Kingdom of Space. Extraordinarily scarce Contactee collectible; with the inscription and presentation to Miller, essentially unique. L103

Staff Report No. 4 - Summary of Activities of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, The Rockefeller Foundation,The Rockefeller Gen'l Education Board

USA: Special Committee to Investigate Tax-Exempt Foundations - House of Representatives, H. Res. 217 (The Reece Committee). Stapled. A document which should have rocked the USA to its core but was squelched by the very powers it exposed. In the course of her duties as legal analyst for the Committee, Kathryn Casey was granted access to the archived minutes of the board of directors of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. According to the Committee's Research Director Norman Dodd, it was here that Ms. Casey discovered the board's conclusion that the best way to create world government, and permanent peace, was to involve the United States in a terrible war. The Reece Committee and its findings came to prominence decades later when Norman Dodd, Research Director for the Committee, came forward with stunning revelations of the Committee's findings. Printed for the use of the committee, this booklet contains pages 627-665b from the printed hearings. Includes 20 tables, 12 charts and 10 data sheets. Moderate wear. Unmarked. Crease to lower corner. A sound copy of this powerful document. . Good. 1954. First Edition Thus.
