Staff Report No. 4 - Summary of Activities of the Carnegie Corporation of New York, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, The Rockefeller Foundation,The Rockefeller Gen'l Education Board

USA: Special Committee to Investigate Tax-Exempt Foundations - House of Representatives, H. Res. 217 (The Reece Committee). Stapled. A document which should have rocked the USA to its core but was squelched by the very powers it exposed. In the course of her duties as legal analyst for the Committee, Kathryn Casey was granted access to the archived minutes of the board of directors of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. According to the Committee's Research Director Norman Dodd, it was here that Ms. Casey discovered the board's conclusion that the best way to create world government, and permanent peace, was to involve the United States in a terrible war. The Reece Committee and its findings came to prominence decades later when Norman Dodd, Research Director for the Committee, came forward with stunning revelations of the Committee's findings. Printed for the use of the committee, this booklet contains pages 627-665b from the printed hearings. Includes 20 tables, 12 charts and 10 data sheets. Moderate wear. Unmarked. Crease to lower corner. A sound copy of this powerful document. . Good. 1954. First Edition Thus.

        Talking About Fashion

New York: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1954. First American edition. Hardcover. Very good in a just about very good unclipped dust jacket, with the jacket showing light to moderate edgewear, a closed tear and slight snag to the upper front jacket panel at mid, light overall soiling and some light foxing to jacket verso. This copy inscribed and signed by the designer on the front free endpaper: "To my dear Mrs. --------, whom I am always so happy to see. With my warm regards, Christian Dior." For all his reknown, popularity and stature, Dior's signature is not particularly common, which is also true of inscribed copies of this title.

New York: New York: Macmillan, 1954, 1954. Dust jacket on this copy of the first American edition of the first James Bond thriller is still bright and quite pleasing. Jacket of predominantly green and red is still basically intact although with flaws and some losses. Losses do not affect any of the design elements. Most serious flaw resulted from a prior owner deciding to stabilize a couple of closed tears to the front cover of the jacket with scotch tape. The tape is only slightly yellowed and thus just a little bit visible on the white field of the playing card design. The tape blends in with the red field at top of jacket. Part of the two pieces of tape used extend onto the front inside flap where they are the most evident. Price of $2.75 on front inside flap at top, and corners of flap are clipped. Book itself is square and tight and very clean inside and out. First Printing stated on copyright page with 1954 date on title page. Small wear spot on front cloth cover and a bit of edge and corner wear but these points of wear not serious. Lettering in red on the green cloth is still bold. Only real flaw to book is a wear spot on the half title page caused by a small piece of that page having stuck to the opposite blank endpaper and now adhering on top of that blank endpaper. This causes a thinness to the paper at that spot on the half title page. Wear spot is about a half inch by half inch but the spot has not completely worn through. It does not affect any of the type on the half title page or the type on the other side of the half title. Small areas of chipping to jacket with some closed tears, but no loss to design of the jacket. Front side chip at head of spine a half inch vertical along joint, and this chip extends slightly into the top left corner of the front cover of the jacket. Similar but less of a problem on back side joint at head of spine. One closed tear at bottom of front cover of jacket was not taped, and there is a crease line extending diagonally from the top of that closed tear to middle bottom edge of the cover. A few shorter crease lines with small amount of corresponding chipping at edges of the crease lines. Spine of jacket shows a couple of crease lines with slight losses along the lines. The most serious crease line goes through the N in IAN affecting the N a bit. See photo for best indication of the condition of the jacket, which is now protected in mylar. Back of jacket now shown in photo has some smudging from the print. The jacket presents as better than just average considering the average jacket for this would probalby be quite tattered. Thus a grade of Good plus assigned to the jacket. The tape on jacket not evident at first glance. Book itself is a quite nice copy on the whole which does not really appear to have been read. If so, it was read lightly and carefully. Very scarce Bond first edition even in the first American edition, and more scarce yet in a jacket that is anywhere near presentable. The first British edition in its jacket is now basically out of reach price-wise. The first British edition came out a year earlier than this American first edition.. First American Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Good+. Octavo, 176pp.

25 Cats Name[d] Sam and One Blue Pussy

New York: Self-published, [1954]. Near fine in leatherette boards, with the original hand-colored lithograph mounted to the front cover (slightly soiled and with tiny losses at one edge, but far better than usual). An exceptional copy, vibrantly colored, of a book that sadly often winds up broken with the illustrations removed. One of the great typological artists' books of the 20th century, predating Ruscha's 26 Gasoline Stations, and Various Small Fires and Milk, for which "Sam" would appear a likely antecedent. Housed in a custom-made slipcase.. First Edition. Octavo. Number 110 of a limited edition of 190 numbered copies, SIGNED by Andy Warhol. (According to the printer, Seymour Berlin, about 150 copies were actually printed.) One of Warhol's earliest, rarest, and most beautiful artists' books, made up of 17 hand-colored lithograph plates printed on Arches paper, with an additional hand-colored lithograph mounted to the front cover. Accompanied by a typed letter, SIGNED by Warhol on his letterhead (Andy Warhol Enterprises), sent to Kirby's department store in Salt Lake City along with two copies of the book, and inquiring how the store had learned of the book's publication, as most copies had been given away.

Stated one of 100 copies. Because of its provocative content (a tubercular dandy dies while his ex-prostitute wife and his Cherokee half-brother ignore his pleas for help and instead have passionate sex in the next room), Williams was advised to remove the story from the collection *Hard Candy*. It did appear in much later collections, and he later adapted the story into both a play of the same name, and ultimately the longer play *The Seven Descents of Myrtle* (in which the half-brother is African-American rather than Native American).         Golda Meir Stresses the Need to Settle New Immigrants

Jerusalem 1954 - Typed Letter Signed "Golda Meyerson" as Minister of Labour, to Yaakov Hazan. Jerusalem, October 23, 1954. 1 p., 6 x 8 in. In Hebrew on Ministry of Labour letterhead. Golda Meyerson (she would change her name to Meir in 1956), promotes the idea of Mapam (the Marxist United Workers' Party) joining Sharett's Mapai (Workers' Party) government. Hazan, the recipient, was one of Mapam's co-founders. Transcript"It is of highest importance that Mapam join the Government headed by [Moshe] Sharett. As I see it, the magnitude of this moment must overcome all the differences of opinion between us. It is incumbent upon Mapam to take part in and contribute to the settling of the new immigrants who have just arrived, according to the same philosophy which inspired us in Merhavia and Mishmar Ha-Emek in the 1920's, and which will motivate the cooperation between us in the 1950's. As a result, you will never be able to forgive yourselves for standing idly by in the face of the obvious challenges."

Bericht von Jesus aus Nazareth. Tatsachen von gestern und heute.

Berlin, Evangelische Haupt-Bibelgesellschaft, 1954.. [1.

        Temple Song

Stuttgardt: (Frederic Prokosch). 1954. First. First edition. Marbled paper self-wrappers with printed gold foil label. 24mo. Faint vertical bend to the right hand extremities, else fine. Out of a total edition of 44 copies, this is copy "2" of 10 numbered copies in paper from Hannover. Inscribed by the author. Extra label tipped-in. A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books". Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions", which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. Additionally he reprinted some of the books between 1978-1980, but the provenance of this book, and the owner's notes that accompany the book indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. Additionally he reprinted some of the books between 1978-1980, but the provenance of this book, and the owner's notes that accompany the book indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. Rare. OCLC locates four copies in institutions. .
