Paris: Denoël, 1954. First French Edition. First Printing of the French crime fiction duo's third novel, preceding the British edition by two years and the American by three. Octavo; blue photo-illustrated wrappers printed in black and white; 222pp, [1]. Wrappers lightly rubbed at extremities and joints, mild erasure to faint pencil notation at upper left corner of rear wrapper, a few minor stress creases to covers and several vertical ridges along the spine (practically unavoidable with Denoël titles, in our experience); a solid Very Good+ copy. Basis for the iconic 1958 film noir 'Vertigo' directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and Barbara Bel Geddes. Not only is 'Vertigo' is widely recognized as Hitchcock's masterpiece, it is also routinely cited by AFI and Sight and Sound as one of the greatest films ever made. A title that is rarely offered in commerce, and for such an important film source book, it is surprisingly underrepresented institutionally; OCLC locates just four holdings in American institutions. An attractive copy of a fragile volume and cornerstone film source title.

The folding map shows the plan of the harbor.

        Casino Royale Signed Ian Fleming

UK: Jonathan Cape, 1954. 1st Edition 3rd Printing. Hardcover. Near Fine/Very Good+. Casino Royale by Ian Fleming Signed First Edition Jonathan Cape 1954. Third impression. No inscriptions, no foxing to edges, light spotting to early pages. Black cloth boards with heart motif near fine in the original dust jacket which has benefited from light restoration. Not price clipped and displaying 10/6 to front and back flaps. SIGNED BY IAN FLEMING on loosely inserted hand written invitation whilst aboard the RMS Mauretania. Typed and hand signed pre dinner drinks invitation (in French) from Ian Fleming to legendary fashion designer Christian Dior on 'RMS Mauretania' letter head - undated but believed to be circa 1948. There is a mention of Fleming travelling on the RMS Mauretania, along with rumours of his affair with fellow traveller Viscountess Rothermere, in the diaries of Sir Raymond Streat. The below is taken from 'The Diary of Sir Raymond Streat, Volume 2 1948: "Monday, January 5th On board R.M.S Mauretania. One day is much the same as another on board a great liner. There is consequently very little to add. Two evenings I have played bridge in the Captain's cabin with the Captain as my partner and Viscountess Rothermere and Ian Fleming as opponents. The gossip-mongers suspect an affair between these two, but it is no business of mine and they play bridge entertainingly."         Zoo Quest to Guiana [with] Zoo Quest for a Dragon [with] Zoo Quest in Paraguay [with] Quest in Paradise [with] Zoo Quest to Madagascar [with] Quest under Capricorn. THE 'ZOO QUEST' SERIES COMPLETE IN DUSTWRAPPERS

6 vols., 8vo., First Edition, with coloured frontispieces and very numerous coloured and monochrome plates throughout; original cloth (green / red / green / red / blue / green respectively), gilt backs, a very good, bright, clean set in dustwrapper. A remarkably bright, fresh set in the original colourful wrappers of Attenborough's earliest books, recording his 'Zoo Quest' animal - foraging expeditions in many different territories. Well - illustrated and delightfully written, these early titles display much of the talent and infectious charm that has since made their author a naturalist, broadcaster and presenter of world renown. The series captures well the appeal of his first - ever television series 'Zoo Quest' that ran on the BBC from 1954 - 1964. It also gave rise, incidentally (in those far - off pre - computer days), to a highly popular board game! The sequence comprises 'Zoo Quest to Guiana' (1956), 'Zoo Quest for a Dragon' (1957), 'Zoo Quest to Paraguay' (1959), 'Quest in Paradise' (1960), 'Zoo Quest to Madagascar' (1961) and 'Quest under Capricorn' (1963). Two omnibus volumes of extracts were published for a new generation of readers in the 1980s. COMPLETE SETS IN THIS CONDITION ARE SELDOM OFFERED FOR SALE.

The Passport ****** An extraordinary specimen with an elegant Saul Steinberg presentation for Paul Rand, "To Paul, Saul 1954". Two later additions are laid-in by Rand including two juxtaposed, connected Paul Rand original pen & ink drawings, done with visual wit on a 161 x 215 mm sheet of ordinary copy paper in black & white with touches of red and green. On the rear are three pen & ink notes in Rand's clearest handwriting on modern formalism. The 'mental geographies', full of space and incident, are the work of a brilliant, mature artist and beautifully complement Saul Steinberg's drawings for "Passport". Like Paul Rand's other private drawings done for pleasure, they are unsigned and undated. ******

Harper & Brothers, New York 1954 - SECOND ADDITION: The stapled booklet with checklist for the first museum retrospective for Saul Steinberg, held at the Whitney Museum of American Art (1978), a color reproduction of "Dancing Couple" (a 1965 mixed media work) on the wrappers' upper side, complete, as 15 pages, with introduction by Harold Rosenberg and a 257 items checklist. PRESENTATION: carefully done on the half title page, three spaced short lines in dark gray ink. CONDITION: Presentation: Excellent, half title page with trace top edge wear. / Original Drawings: Good: inks bright, vertical center fold line with slight soiling, scattered stain spots, all-over fingering, tips with trace wear, a gentle bottom corner crease. / Exhibition Checklist: Near Fine, wrappers lightly bowed at fore-edge. / Book: Pages: Excellent. / Boards: lower side with light soiling, crown and foot lightly bumped. / Binding: solid and reliable. / Endpapers: front with toning in gutter. / Jacket: Upper side with light soiling, a top edge crease with tiny chip, slight corner wear; lower side with some soiling, residue near head, top and bottom edges with slight wear; spine with slight crown & foot wear. SIZE: 311 X 233mm (12.25 x 9.17 inches). PAGINATION: Complete, pages not numbered but 224 pages with 350 drawings, double-page and full-page, selected by Steinberg from works made 1949-54, 240 published for the first time, (110 previously appeared in magazine issues, 79 in New Yorker), some with color, one in sepia, and featuring several remarkable mixed media works with photographs re-worked with a drawing. FORMAT: Publisher's putty cloth boards, upper side stamped with a Steinberg black line drawing; pictorial jacket with different Steinberg works reproduced in color on each side; book quarto sewn with endpapers reproducing in color a double-page Steinberg drawing. PAUL RAND DRAWINGS: While both drawings have their own visual syntax, they share a method of using juxtaposition as a narrative technique and establishing a multiplicity of connections between the edges of the picture and the center. The 2nd drawing is rotated 90 degrees clockwise in the visual plane from the viewer, emphasizing that two very different worlds are portrayed. The first drawing is a world-out-of-dream, really, the mapping of a dream in which the dreamer, lying on a couch, as in analysis, has his dream recorded and projected by an Alfred Hitchcock head using an optic device. The narrative in the dream is dichotomy, sexual dichotomy-the two genders and their history-and includes the Edenic metaphor of the apple. The further the distance from the dreamer, the freer the images become. The second drawing is a view of the world of commerce and requires the viewer to turn towards it. Unlike the dream drawing, the drawing of the world of commerce can be viewed from 3 sides, signified by a staring figure or head at 3 of the corners. The composition roots itself in position and direction, a number series, 1,2,3,4, a compass, a figure pointing to an automobile leaving the picture frame, atlas repeated twice, the number 2 repeated 5 times along 2 diagonals, headed by the number 5. The commerce drawing is an urban geography: automobiles move past and through the frame: an advertisement for Starkist Tuna appears like a billboard. At the center of the sheet is the only shared imagery, the word-Acquavella, e.g. Acquavella Galleries in New York City (est. 1921); the art gallery as an intersection or convergence of commerce and dream.         Reach For The Sky

London: Collins,, 1954. The Story of Douglas Bader D.S.O., D.F.C. Octavo. Original blue boards, gilt lettered spine. With the dust jacket. Portrait frontispiece and 12 other plates. Jacket stained at head of back panel, otherwise a nice copy. First edition, first impression. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper: "Douglas Bader, 29/2/56". Above Bader's signature is the pencilled ownership inscription of "Jean Blackall, March 15th 1954" and a picturesque anecdote in her hand: "He [Bader] was one of our patients at Mr Mordaunt's in New Cavendish St in London. He swung a leg over the chair while signing my book". We believe that "Mr Mordaunt's" was a West End dental practice. Pasted to the rear free endpaper is a home made pocket containing newspaper clippings on Bader and the film of the book (including a cinema programme from the Odeon Bromley). Lewis Gilbert's film starring Kenneth More was released to enormous success in the same year as the book, and established the Bader legend. It is nice to find a signed first edition, most signed copies being later impressions.

The Worship of Love: A Study of Nature Worship Throughout the World [Signed by Longworth; Signed by George Seferis]

Torchstream Books, 1954, Hardcover, Book Condition: Fine, Dust Jacket Condition: very good +, First editionAn about Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original dark brown cloth (mildly canted, some pushing at the spine ends and board corners, bare traces of wear, a bit of wrinkling to the first plate, spine label sharp and crisp), in a Very Good + example of the scarce dust jacket which matches the free endpapers and pastedowns (small chips with tears at the spine panel's upper corners, tape repairs to the inside of the jacket, tiny wear at upper panel corner turns to the spine flaps, mild wear and tiny chip to the spine label that does not affect the lettering, portions of some signatures are unopened); copy 298 from a Limited Edition of 975 copies, SIGNED BY T. CLIFTON LONGWORTH on the title page and FURTHER SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the front free endpaper to British author Rex Warner, his friend and the translator of some of Seferis' works. Seferis also has inscribed the front free endpaper with a single line in Greek which he has underscored and under which he has drawn a series of arrows. Translated to English, the line written by Seferis appears to read "worship of sensual love on island of Cyprus" or "praise to worship of love on Cyprus" (We are seeking a more precise translation.) T. Clifton Longworth was deeply interested in the origins of religious belief and wrote extensively on the topic. In his studies of both ancient religions and present day tribal religions, Longworth determined the worship of love, that is, the adoration of reproductive organs as the symbol of the creative power, to be a common theme, running through the very first religions and constituting the first and most universal form of religious expression. This book presents an extensive study of the topic and, notably, the half-title carries the following printed statement: "The sale of this book is restricted to members of the Medical and Legal Professions, Anthropologists, Psychologists, Sociologists, Ethnologists and Students of Comparative Religion". In his research, Longworth visited Cyprus where he viewed the the sacred Cone of Aphrodite. He discusses it and the marvelous Greek statuary that evolved from it in his Introduction and in the book's first Chapter. George Seferis, a Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, was the first Greek ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Both he and British author Rex Warner - to whom Seferis presented the book - were deeply interested in all things related to Cyprus, thus explaining both the giving of the book by Seferis to Warner and the single line written by Seferis under his signature. Copies of Longworth's books signed by him are quite scarce (this Limited Edition was not called to be signed), as are books signed by George Seferis. This copy, of course, carries both signatures and also constitutes a nice association between two noted authors, the Nobel Laureate George Seferis and the noted author and translator Rex Warner. But something happened to make Prosen change his mind. The Library of Congress, ASCAP and B.M.I. have no entries for this composition and it was never recorded. A rare opportunity to acquire a composition written by a major songwriter while it was still a work in progress. Fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Historically important archive pertaining to the song "Tularosa

1954. unbound. This song was written in 1954 at the very height of Jerry Livingston's success, tracking the project from a simple concept to a copyrighted and published song. The archive includes: Livingston's original signed rough-draft music score for the song "Tularosa" in pencil, with the title crossed out; a second draft, most likely in the hand of Sid Prosen, who has tidied-up Livingston's original score, readying it for publication, the title becoming "Tularosa (Valley Of Roses)." The next step: the creation of the solicitation edition, consisting of the completed work, including lyrics. These copies were mailed to various record companies and vocalists, a solicitation for them to record the song. Also included is the retail edition of the sheet music which was sold in stores. This edition bears the photograph of vocalist Dolores Hawkins of the cover. Once the song was completed, the parties had to secure the proper copyrights. The archive includes an original letter from Hometown Music to the Register of Copyrights, Library of Congress, enclosing the application for registration; a carbon copy of the letter to ASCAP informing them that Hometown Music has the World Rights, with the original ASCAP index card attached; Jerry Livingston's original U.S. government Certificate for the Copyright and Ownership in the Musical Composition "Tularosa (Valley of Roses)" with the embossed seal from the Copyright Office (not valid without it); the original signed publisher-composer contract between Hometown Music and Jerry Livingston / Bill Anson, 4 pages, elephant folio, March 16, 1954, whereby Livingston accepted $1.00 (as an advance against royalties), and agreed to accept 5 cents...but no less than 3 cents per sheet music sold, signed "Jerry Livingston" / "Bill Anson" / "Sidney Prosen," with the original cover sheet from the Songwriters Protective Association sanctioning the agreement. A most impressive archive pertaining to one of the most successful songwriters of the 20th century. All items are in fine condition and are housed in the original manila folder. American iconic songwriter best known for writing the words and music to Walt Disney%u2019s animated features "Cinderella" and "Alice in Wonderland," including the Academy Award-winning songs "A Wish Is A Dream Your Heart Makes" and "Bibbidi - Bobbidi - Boo." In the pop market, he wrote "Mairzy Doats" and "Blue And Sentimental." In motion pictures he wrote the Oscar-nominated songs "The Hanging Tree" and "The Ballad Of Cat Ballou." And for children of all ages, he wrote "Casper The Friendly Ghost" and the theme song for "The Bugs Bunny Show." Provenance: from the vaults of Hometown-Village Music, a New York City music publishing company (1930s - 1960s) owned by Sid Prosen.

        Live and Let Die

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1954. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine and roundel to front board gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box. Front board very gently bowed. Otherwise a fine copy in a bright jacket with lightly rubbed rear panel, slight toning to top edges of flaps, and mildly rubbed and nicked spine ends and corners. First edition, first impression, in the first issue jacket without the design credit slug to the front flap. The earliest dust jackets issued made no mention of Kenneth Lewis and at some point the need was recognised to credit his work. A stamp was made and as a stopgap existing jackets were overstamped beneath the blurb on the front flap. This slightly amateurish solution was swiftly abandoned and the jacket was reset and reprinted to include the Lewis credit. Copies of the first impression exist with all three states though we note that the third state dust jacket may readily be found on reprints and ought therefore be regarded with some suspicion. Copies of the first issue in such condition as the present example are increasingly hard to find.

Living the Good Life [Inscribed in the Year of Publication]

Harborside: Social Science Institute. (1954). An account of the authors' homestead in Vermont, which they described as a 20-year project in self-subsistent living and subtitled this volume (in part) "How to Live Sanely and Simply in a Troubled World." The Nearings were radical pacifists who essentially "dropped out" of most aspects of contemporary American society after World War II, and set about making their Vermont farm self-sustaining. In the Vietnam War era this book became the Bible of the back-to-the-land movement, and that, in turn, led to the movement toward revitalizing small farms, the "slow food" movement, and the "locavore" phenomenon -- which are pervasive cultural influences in the U.S. and western Europe today. Inscribed by the authors in the year of publication: "To Eva & Hans & their good life in Yonkers/ Helen & Scott/ Oct 12 1954." All written in Helen's hand but for Scott's name, which Scott has written. From what we've been able to discern, Hans [Simons] was Dean of the School of Politics of the New School for Social Research. Foxing to the spine cloth; a very good copy in patterned boards, lacking the dust jacket. First Edition. Hardcover.

        Signed Playbill -- "The Immoralist

New York, 1954. paperback. near fine. Exceedingly rare and possibly unique signed Playbill for James Dean's appearance in the Broadway play "The Immoralist" at the Royale Theatre, February 1954. Signed "James Dean" on the front cover, along with "Geraldine Page" and "Louis Jourdan." The Playbill grades near fine condition, retaining much of its milk white surface with no rusting at the staples. The signatures are all executed in pencil with excellent contrast. Accompanied by the even rarer ticket envelope from the Royale Theatre box office containing the original ticket stub for the February 6, 1954 matinee performance. The Balcony seat (Row F Seat 5) cost the attendee $1.80. Note: "The Immoralist" opened for New York previews on February 6, 1954 at the Royale Theatre, a most unusual circumstance at the time; audiences could attend, but critics were not invited. Dean's behavior was erratic and several members of the cast described him as a distraction. On February 7th the producers of the play contacted playwright Paul Osborne. He was working on an adaption of John Steinbeck's "East of Eden" and called director Elia Kazan to recommend the fellow playing the Arab houseboy as a possibility for the leading role. Knowing Dean's work, Kazan jumped at the idea and Dean tendered his resignation the next day -- which happened to be opening night -- before the reviews came in. In essence, Dean appeared in only a handful of preview performances and in the opening night presentation, and then he was gone. This is without doubt one of the most important James Dean items to come to market in the last 25 years. American actor best known for his roles in three 1950s screen classics:" East of Eden," "Rebel Without A Cause," and "Giant." His untimely death in a high-speed car crash elevated him to the status of Hollywood legend.
