[The Lord of the Rings:] The Fellowship of the Ring; The Two Towers; The Return of the King

London: George Allen and Unwin Ltd,, 1954?"5. 3 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spines gilt, top edbges stained red. With the dust jackets. A superb set in the uncommonly nice dust jackets lightly and evenly faded at the spines. A really pretty set. First editions, first impressions. The first edition was published in editions of 3,000 copies, 3,250 copies, and 7,000 copies respectively, so that there are no more than 3,000 sets in first impression throughout. The Return of the King is known in two states; the present copy is in the first state, page 49 with the signature mark "4" present and all lines of type sagging slightly in the middle. The three books together in first edition, first impression, first state are now increasingly scarce in the original printed dust jackets.

Live and Let Die - THE CORRECT FIRST STATE DUST WRAPPER - WITH AN ORIGINAL PIECE OF SIGNED - LIVE AND LET DIE - ARTWORK BY THE DUST WRAPPER DESIGNER - KENNETH LEWIS.

Jonathan Cape, London 1954 - HARDBACK - The book is in near fine condition. The outer black boards are unmarked. The gilt lettering to the spine is unfaded, as is the coin to the front board. The inner pages are very clean indeed, and free of foxing. The are no previous owner names or Inscriptions to the book. The book comes with an original piece of Live and Let Die artwork loosly laid in to the book by the artist Kenneth Lewis. The artwork shows the aqua marine blue designed dust wrapper, that was changed by Ian Fleming in favour of the burgandy wrapper that finally went to press.( It is rumoured that a few copies of the aqua marine dust wrapper were printed, but none have ever surfaced for sale ) The artwork has also been signed by the dust wrapper's artist. The dust wrapper is in very good or better condition. The dust wrapper is the correct first state with no Kenneth Lewis blurb to the front flap. This example features the text 'author'sskill' with the printed error within the Irish Times review. There is very light chipping to the spine tip, and a very small closed tear to the front panel. The wrapper's colours are fresh, with a little soiling to the rear panel. The book is correctly priced at 10s.6d.net to both the front and rear flap [Attributes: First Edition]

Possible Relation Between Deoxyribonucleic," WITH Huxley, H.; Hanson, J. "Structural changes in muscle during contraction: interference microscopy of living muscle fibres" WITH "Changes in the cross-striations of muscle during contraction and stretch and their structural interpretation" WITH Amaldi, E., C. D.Anderson, P. M. S.Blackett, W. B.Fretter, L. Leprince-Ringuet, B. Peters, C. F. Powell, C. D. Rochester, B. Rossi eB. W. Thompson. " Symbols for Fundamental Particles" inNature173, 1954, p. 123; pp. 318; pp. 971-973; 973-976

      - First edition of Gamow's highly significant discovery of four different kinds of amino-acids - nucleotides - that were capable of information storage and transfer within a living cell. Gamow here proposes the 'genetic code' and proves that "life is guided by information and inorganic processes are not" (Yockey, Information Theory, 8). "Gamow conjectured that DNA provided a direct template for proteins. When looked at in a certain way, Gamow contended, DNA could be seen to have twenty different cavities along its length, a number equal to that of the common amino acids" (The Francis Crick Papers, Defining the Genetic Coding Problem).Gamow's work was first printed in this volume of Nature in the form of a letter to Watson, ironically, the first positive response to the discovery of DNA that he and Crick had received. "In early 1954, less than a year after J. D. Watson and Francis Crick discovered the double helical structure of DNA, Gamow recognized that the information contained in the four different kinds of nucleotides (adenine, thymine, guanine, cytosine) constituting the DNA chains could be translated into the sequence of twenty amino acids which form protein molecules by counting all possible triplets one can form from four different quantities" (DSB). "The chemistry of life is controlled by digital sequences recorded in DNA, as Gamow [in this paper] was the first to realize. Life is guided by information and inorganic processes are not" (Yockey, 8). Sixty years later the focus remains on the 'double helix' and biochemistry, but it was also of great import to discover "that the life message is digital, linear, and segregated" (ibid). "Gamow's suggestion is that life is more than complicated chemistry and that the digital information in DNA sequences is set to the digital information in the proteome by means of a code. It was not until 2001 that Watson acknowledged the essential contribution made by George Gamow" (ibid, 10). Heretofore, Gamow had been a physicist and a cosmologist. "[The remarkable way in which Gamow could rapidly enter a more or less unfamiliar field at the forefront of its activity and make a highly creative contribution to it, often far more by intuition than by calculation, led Ulam to characterize his work as "perhaps the last example of amateurism in scientific work on a grand scale" (DSB). ALSO IN THIS VOLUME: the first edition of Huxley and Hanson's ground-breaking 'sliding filament' theory of how muscles function; their theory is "the foundation of modern understanding of muscle mechanics" (Wikipedia). ALSO: First edition of the nomenclature designed to provide symbols for the startling new developments in the field of fundamental particles. This nomenclature is largely still in use today. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Macmillian & Sons. Volume 173, complete volume. 4to (10.25.x 7.5 inches; 256 x 186mm). Ex-libris bearing only discrete stamps on the flyleaf, pastedown and title page; no spine markings whatsoever. Bound in blue cloth, gilt-lettered at the spine. Solidly and tightly bound; light rubbing at the edges. Very clean inside and out. Very good condition.

        Race Rock [Inscribed Association Copy]

NY: Harper & Brothers. (1954). His first novel, published just after he returned from Paris, where he helped found the Paris Review. Inscribed by Matthiessen to his brother-in-law, Kennett Love. The book is dedicated to Deborah Love; she and Matthiessen were married from 1963 until her death in 1972. Kennett Love was a former New York Times reporter, specializing in Middle Eastern affairs. His book Suez: The Twice-Fought War is considered the standard work on the subject. This is the issue in blue cloth and black boards; the priority has not been determined. Love's ownership signature on front flyleaf (and his hunting license inserted at page 112); offsetting from laid in review on pp. 42-43; spine cloth faded. Still about near fine in a supplied, very good dust jacket rubbed along the folds and with a replaced chip at the spine base. Also laid in is a postcard from a bookstore, quoting the book to Love for $5.00, in 1967. An excellent association copy, being inscribed to the brother of the dedicatee. First Edition. Hardcover.

Manuscript - Lie Detection and Criminal Interrogation

California, 1954. Instructional Criminology Document Discloses Detailed Techniques For Lie Detection and Interrogation for Confession 1954 California, circa 1954. Lie detection and criminal interrogation manuscript, being the personal notes of skilled California police detective, Felix Nicdao Capili, compiled for the purpose of training others in crime solving through discerning deception and truth, as well as extracting a confession from felons and accomplices. Folio. 185 pages typed, with in-text polygraph illustrations mounted within, bound in red cloth boards titled in gilt. Ownership signature to a blank leaf preceding Part II. Volume measures approximately 12.5 x 8 inches. Fraying and wear to boards, especially spine, otherwise in Very Good condition, internally sound, a highly informative document. Felix Nicdao Capili (1926 - 2010) was a police detective for California's Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Evidently proficient and commensurably experienced in criminal interrogation, Capili draws from Inbau and Reid's authoritative techniques used worldwide. He further examines high profile cases which set precedents and served to establish laws and standards of conduct for interrogation in the United States of America. The first part of the document forms a most comprehensive dissertation on the polygraph, 119 pages, beginning with a diagram and history of its development, and including instructions for utilizing the instrument effectively, followed by illustrations which demonstrate physiological factors and responses detected in test readings. Numerous polygraph results from actual criminal cases are presented as examples. The second part, 66 pages, deals not with an instrument, but with the delicate and skilful art of one-on-one interrogation, presenting various psychological principles on the questioning procedure, differentiating between Emotional and Non-Emotional Offenders, and touching upon profiling, for example. Superbly detailed and specific, such tactics as appealing to the suspect's pride, pointing out the futility of resistance, condemning the victim, the use of exaggeration, and the so-called "Friend and Enemy Act" are explained. Remarks on ethical interrogation, incriminating statements, the suspect's constitutional rights, and questions of admissibility of confessions in court, conclude this most unusual work. Important interrogations and trials which have affected and helped to shape the justice system are mentioned in large number. Some of these include: McNabb v. United States, 318 U.S. 332 (1943) - a prominent murder case addressing confession admissibility where the Supreme Court determined that confessions can be excluded if obtained after "unnecessary delay" in arraigning suspects Ward v. The State of Texas, 316 U.S. 547 (1942) - a highly controversial case involving unlawful coercion to obtain a confession, in which an African American man was accused of murder and allegedly incarcerated in several county jails, persistently questioned and physically abused, a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment. Ashcraft vs The State of Tenessee, 322 U.S. 143 (1944) - a murder case in which one of the two petitioners was interrogated for 38 hours with only one 5 minute break, both claiming that a confession was extorted from them, and after the jury's Supreme Court of Tennessee determined that the defendants' confessions were voluntary, the United States Supreme Court ruled for the defendants. The Reid Polygraph: John E. Reid and Associates began developing interview and interrogation techniques in 1947, forming the system which is now the most widely used approach to question subjects in the world. John E. Reid was first taught the polygraph technique by Fred Inbau, who at the time was the director of the Chicago Police Scientific Crime Detection Laboratory. The polygraph technique was at the time unstructured and relied extensively on interrogation techniques. By made several significant contributions to the polygraph technique, which culminated in a clinical procedure of diagnosing truth and deception without reliance on interrogation. As his business grew, he trained additional staff members, who continued to refine the procedures through their observations and experiences. Specifically, Reid and his associates developed a systematic interviewing format that permitted evaluation of a person's truthfulness independent from a polygraph examination. This procedure, termed a Behavior Analysis Interview, has become a standard investigative technique. John Reid was a very successful interrogator, largely influenced by Fred Inbau. Applying accepted psychological principles, together Inbau and Reid developed a structured approach to the interrogation process that, in no way, relied on coercion or intimidation to elicit the truth. This technique evolved into "The Reid Nine Steps of Interrogation" which comprises factual analysis, interviewing, and interrogation. "Lie Detection and Criminal Interrogation" by Professor Fred Inbau and John Reid, is the leading police manual on the subject, the best known and most influential work in the United States, and used to train thousands of police officers each year. American detectives also employ Inbau and Reid's tactics and techniques in practice. First published in 1942 by Williams & Wilkins Co., expanded and revised editions released in 1948 and 1953, the work is divided into two parts - first describing the polygraph, then the methods of criminal investigation and laws surrounding it Fred E. Inbau (1909-1998) was an early criminologist who helped elevate trickery and deceit to a refined art of police interrogation by the police and by prosecutors alike. Inbau was a law professor and criminal law specialist who championed the use of the polygraph test as an investigative tool. Inbau was instrumental in developing a structured approach to the interrogation process built around sound psychological principles. In the 1930s, the "third-degree" was commonly employed to obtain confessions and Inbau, with his background as an attorney and law professor, recognized that an interrogator's use of intimidation and coercion could cause an innocent person to confess. At a time in the 1960s when it was unfashionable to do so, Fred Inbau often was a lone voice advocating for the police and prosecution. He was an outspoken critic of the Supreme Court's 1966 Miranda decision, which requires the police to notify a suspect of his rights before interrogation. The Northwestern University Library, where he taught, holds a large collection of Inbau's papers. McNabb v. United States, 318 U.S. 332 (1943) was a prominent case addressing confession admissibility, where the Supreme Court determined that confessions can be excluded if obtained after "unnecessary delay" in arraigning suspects. The McNabb petitioners confessed to killing a federal officer, but were never brought before a magistrate upon arrest, though federal legislation required prompt arraignment. Relying on the congressional statute, the Court excluded the confessions, holding that they were made during unlawful detentions. McNabb was reaffirmed by Mallory v. United States, 354 U.S. 449 (1957). Accordingly, the McNabb-Mallory doctrine prohibits "undue delay" in arraignment and invalidates confessions derived from lengthy delays. . Very Good.

Klasszikus Összhangzattan. Segédkönyv. (Classical harmony. Reference Book.)

Zenem?kiadó Vállalat, Budapest 1954 - First edition of Ligeti's first book. In original paper. 97, (3) p. Ligeti's theoretical writings are important to understand his thoughts about composition, and also to interpret his pieces. As in the 1950s he was not allowed to publish any theoretical books, this work is rather important to trace his ideas of composing. For instance, the last example that Ligeti uses in this reference book and also in his second reference book in 1956 (the detail of the first movement of the coda of Beethoven's Les Adieux sonata - Piano Sonata No. 26., Op. 81a), is the same melody that appears 30 years later in his Trio for Horn, Violin and Piano (Hommage à Brahms) in 1982. György Ligeti (1923-2006) was a Hungarian (Transylvanian) born composer. Studied at the Music Academy of Cluj and Budapest. After his graduation he started to collect folk music in Romania and taught composing and counterpointing at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He left Hungary after the revolution in 1956, and started to work at the radio station in Cologne where he made acquaintance with Karlheinz Stockhausen who had a major influence on his art. In 1959 settled down in Vienna and became citizen in 1967. Taught at the Universities of Darmstadt, Stockholm, Stanford and Hamburg. Under the influence of Stockhausen he started to compose music for electronic instruments like Artikulation and Atmosphères. This gave him reputation in the Western European music scene. After these works he gave up composing electronic music but his experiences with such instruments made and effect on his later compositions. His music could be characterised as a mixture of Western avant-garde music and Hungarian folk music combined with sense of humour and absurd. Ligeti's pieces (Lontano, Lux Aeterna, Requiem) were used as film music - among others - in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut also in Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island.       S. Fischer, (Frankfurt am Main) 1954 - True first edition. In original orange paper. 441, (1), [6] p. Thomas Mann's last, unfinished picaresque novel, that he "wrote" throughout almost his entire life, about Felix Krull, the confidence man. A parody of Goethe's autobiography "Dichtung und Wahrheit" (Poetry and Truth), embellished with Mann's ironic autobiographical allusions. Mann started to plan the book in 1905 and finished the first chapters already in 1911 than he ceased writing it for about four decades to continue it in the early 50s, between 1950 and 1954. The first part published first in the collection of short stories in 1920, titled "Das Wunderkind" (The Infant Prodigy), the first separate edition was published in 1922. This one is the very first edition of the entire (but still unfinished) work. "Leseexemplars" were printed in limited number, not for the market, handed to booksellers and journalist weeks before the date of the proper publication. We could not trace any copies in libraries, found only one copy in Hans-Peter Haack's collection. [Haack, Hans-Peter: Erstausgaben Thomas Mann; 91.3.]. Spine somewhat worn, author and title written in ink. [Attributes: First Edition]
