Hilde Spiel (1911-1990). Portrait, Brustbild der vierzigjährigen Dichterin und Journalistin im Londoner Exil. Öl auf Leinen, signiert A. Purtscher 54, Keilrahmen, 61 x 51 cm.

(London 1954 - (London 1954). Presentation Copies to Ruth Tolman of : THE OPEN MIND and SCIENCE AND THE COMMON UNDERSTANDING [ together with ] a Handwritten Note

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1954. SCIENCE AND THE COMMON UNDERSTANDING, 1954, First Printing, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on front end page - "for Ruth in gratitude & love Robert May - June 1954". Laid in, a single page of typing paper titled "Errata in SCIENCE AND THE COMMON UNDERSTANDING" , denoting 6 errors and a suggested improvement. Also laid in a page torn from "The New Statesman and Nation", dated Dec. 26, 1953 and an undated newspaper clipping from the same period, both concerning Oppenheimer. THE OPEN MIND, 1955, First Printing, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on front end page - "for Ruth, with my love Robert Christmas 1955". Laid in, a single page , folded, 6 1/2" x 5 1/2", "The Institute for Advanced Study, Office of the Director, Princeton, New Jersey" letterhead, undated and unsigned, which reads - " Ruth Dear, Most of these you have seen at one time or another, but perhaps you would like to have them neat & tidy. The S F talk is still on its way, & I don't yet have it. There is a long letter in me crying to be written to you - it should reach you before this." Both books are Fine in Near Fine dust jackets, light rubbing and small chips at bottom edge of spine folds. Ruth Sherman Tolman was the wife of Richard C. Tolman, and she was Robert Oppenheimer's best friend and confidant. A brilliant psychologist in her own right, she helped lead the effort to make psychology a science, held a key post with the OSS, the forerunner of the CIA, and established some of the first treatments for battle fatigue, which we know today as PTSD. Robert Oppenheimer, the "Father of the Atomic Bomb", head of the Manhattan Project, and the founder of modern theoretical physics in America, became a friend of the Tolman's while in his 20s, staying at their guest house during his time spent going between Caltech and UC Berkeley. Robert and Ruth were rumored to have had a long-running affair, which was disavowed by those who knew them, but recent books have renewed that debate. It is known that Ruth destroyed many of his letters, although some have come to light. While this note doesn't settle that debate, it does, along with the inscription, indicate the intimacy that they shared. Books SIGNED AND INSCIBED by Oppenheimer are uncommon, and with the note to Ruth, the presenattion inscriptions and unique association, this collection of material is RARE. . SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR. First Editions. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Presentation Copy.

Stock Car Racing Photograph Album and Scrapbook from the 1950s

Ohio, 1954. Photograph Album. Very Good. Album is 12" x 13" and contains over 140 leaves with about 130 mounted photographs, 100 newspaper clippings, and scores of ephemeral pieces. The photos range in size from 3.5" x 3.5" to 8" x 10". Most of the photos are in black and white, however a few are in color. Most are affixed with mounting corners; some with tape or glue. They are in generally nice shape; some have creases or scuffs and most have minor toning at the border edges. The clippings and ephemera are mounted with glue or tape. Some of the tape has discolored with age. The album is in nice shape with some edge wear; itd has two small address labels for Joseph Thompson on the front cover. Thompson was a stock car builder, racer, and owner for over 50 years and served as the president of the Northern Ohio Stock Car Owners and Drivers Association. He was affiliated with the Moss Racing All-Stars and World of Outlaws Sprint Car Racing. He personally raced at all of the important Ohio raceways and tracks including Sandusky, Mansfield, Ashland Fair, Mt. Vernon, Attica, and Fremont. The album, which focuses on Modified Stock Car Racing, includes: Photographs and autographs of many drivers and their classic modified stock cars including Kaye Ammons, Joe Thompson, Bob Prosser, Richard Dickerson, Ray Delarwelle, Doug Armstutz, and more, Racing, trackside, garage, and crash photographs, Newspaper clippings reporting results, advertisements, crashes, deaths, upcoming races, track openings, etc., and Ephemera including racing permits/liability waivers for eight raceways, rules booklets for eight raceways, five purse payout envelopes, and a number of assorted raceway forms, notices and letters. I can't imagine that there is any better documentation of early Ohio stock car culture than found in this album.

This being his first, both were FIRST & ONLY LIMITED NUMBERD EDITION OF 100 ONLY COPIES, printed on hand made Japanese paper, privately printed. * This study covers the years of residency of Dr. John T. Comerford, in Japan: 1864-1865, who was physician and surgeon. He was stationed on the HMS Beacon, an English ship. It is also the primary account of the British naval bombardment of Shimonoseki and of the strong resistance put up by the Japanese defenders who were armed with bows and arrows against ship board cannon. Comerford was appointed Assistant Surgeon of the "Conqueror" and recorded British operations at Shimonoseki, the attack on the fort, the town and a fascinating description of the Japanese, customs, dress &c. * Issued in an edition of only one-hundred copies, this work remains elusive. * The book was finely printed on lovely hand-made Washi paper with deckle edges, by the Kawakita Co. in Kyoto. There is a Japanese colophon at the back stating the limitation and with a red hand-written number of copy. Beautifully executed with much care. There is one facsimilie of Comerford's diary page, adding realism to this gem. * The condition of as issued, with a few tiny rubs to the boards, and the dustjacket, otherwise a fine copy. * NUC locates six copies. * Color scans can be sent by email.         Nash Palomino Concept Art

1954. Mixed media on paper. Signed and dated "Arbib '54" "A great automotive designer..." (Coachbuilt) 1954 was the year the Hudson and Nash-Kelvinator Corporations merged to form American Motors, with Nash as the predominating partner. The design demonstrates the somewhat prosaic virtues of Nash but also one of the waves of the future: Compact cars. Sturdy and practical, Arbib's "Palomino" rejects both the pretentiousness and the sexiness of much car design of the period. This design, features of which were incorporated into designs of the next 30 years, has a "good American citizen" quality that has always had an audience, though oddly enough it was commandeered by Volkswagen and later Toyota and Honda. Richard Arbib was a tireless industrial designer whose work ranged from watches to yachts, and included many lasting automotive innovations. Born in Gloversville, New York of Egyptian parentage, he attended Pratt. He worked on GM's exhibition at the 1939 World's Fair and then various automotive designers until he set up his own firm in the 1960's, having taken time during World War II to work on bomber design. Scharf, Richard H. Arbib 1917-1995 Visionary American Designer . 2006.

Strange Concept Car with Beautiful Woman

1954. Mixed media on charcoal gray composition board. Signed "R. Arbib '54" Highly imaginative concept car by Richard Arbib This unusual, bird-like front design was conceived of and drawn by Richard Arbib. It is clearly a notion derived from something other than other cars and represents an invitation to a world of creature-like vehicles that car manufacturers turned down. It is enticingly odd, and the beautiful, laughing woman leaning against it seems to be there to reassure the fearful viewer. If someone that beautiful and well-dressed is comfortable with it, why shouldn't I?

Concept Design for the Lincoln Continental (?)

1954. Mixed media on brown composition board with gum arabic. Signed and dated "Hammond 6 - 8- 54" A beautiful concept for a large, two door luxury car The name and logo on the car are so vague that it is not clear whether this beautifully drawn concept is for the Lincoln Continental or not, but it certainly could be. A long, slightly downward sloping line runs from the headlight to the backlight, similar to the Ford Fairlane, but this a larger, more aggressive car with a long hood that comes to a point over a pointed front bumper. The roof is a small missile-like figure. The chrome back fenders and hubcaps add to the richness, as does the two-tone, cappuccino and brown coloring.

Autograph Letter Signed By Harry S. Truman to Dean Acheson.

Kansas City, Missouri, 1954. Autograph letter signed by Harry S. Truman to Dean Acheson. Five pages, with 2 page transcription of Acheson's 19 October response Truman recounts his near death from an infected gall bladder that required emergency, life-saving surgery, and reflects on his changing popular reputation. "Went to our outdoor theater [on June 19] in Swope Park to see 'Call Me Madam,' which I've never seen (and don't want to)." Truman, in fact, was going to appear in a cameo at the end of the play. But he never made it. While waiting to come on "A pain overtook me which I couldn't stop with all the will power I could exercise and the 'Boss' drove me home." Admitted into the hospital, the "Doc told me that the white corpuscles were increasing at the rate of 1000 an hour and that a little butchering would be necessary. I wrote a codicil to my will and went out - I mean out. They gave me about five or ten gallons of anti-biotics by sticking needles in veins. But they just couldn't kill me." His wife Bess "says I'm worse than a Bridge Club Lady--talk about my operation and bore people to death." He also talks about the difficult task of getting his memoirs published, with an impatient publisher waiting for the promised 300,000 words by the spring of 1954. But the hospital was flooded with flowers during his convalescence and Truman was touched by the genuine concerns expressed for "this still controversial former President." No one, he tells Acheson, "knew the travails of what we went through in those years from Apr. 12, 1945 to Jan. 20, 1953 as did you, Gen. Marshall, [Treasury Secretary] John Snyder and [Secretary of Agriculture] Charlie Brannan." A lengthy, revealing letter about Truman's near death experience.

Gilt to binding is not dulled (as often found), edges clean, without the usual toning. Jacket shows a little edgewear and the mildest of toning to rear panel. James Bond has no time for superstition - he knows that Big is also a top SMERSH operative and a real threat. More than that, after tracking him through the jazz joints of Harlem to the Everglades and on the Caribbean, 007 has realized that Mr. Big is one of the most dangerous men he has ever faced, and nobody, not even the enigmatic Solitaire, can be sure how their battle of wills is going to end.

FIRST EDITIONS OF ALL THREE PAPERS DEVELOPING MAX BORN'S REVOLUTIONARY STATISTICAL INTERPRETATION OF QUANTUM MECHANICS, also known as the probability interpretation of the wave function, or the probabilistic interpretation of the Schrodinger wave function. Born argues - an argument that would lead directly to Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle -- that quantum mechanics "could be understood as a probability without any causal explanation" (Wikipedia), prompting Einstein to reply in a letter to Born that "He [God] does not throw dice". Born came to his decisive breakthrough in understanding wave function when, "in a paper on the scattering of electrons from atoms, [he] observed that the most obvious interpretation of the wave function is that it represents the probability of finding the electron at a given location. More precisely, he added almost off-handedly in a footnote, its square represents probability, and this observation is now called the Born Rule" (Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 58). In his "precise and very detailed" second paper, "Quantenmechanik der Stossvorgange," Born"states that matrix mechanics started out from the assumption that it is impossible in principle to exactly describe a process in space and time… In wave mechanics Schrödinger had tried to construct 'wave groups' [now called wave packets], which have small dimensions in all directions and obviously are supposed to represent the moving particle'. Instead, he proposes to try a third interpretation and to test its usefulness on scattering processes" (Brandt, The Harvest of the Century, 170). Born summarizes his interpretation with "The motion of a particle follows probability laws but the probability propagates according to the laws of causality." The third paper, "Das Adiabatenprinzip in der Quantenmechanik," is Born's further development on the statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics; here introducing the concept of quantum tunneling. Born won the Nobel prize in 1954 for "his fundamental research in quantum mechanics, especially for the statistical interpretation of the wave function" (Nobel Committee). ALSO INCLUDED: In Volume 37, O. Klein, "Quantentheorie und fünfdimensionale Relativitätstheorie" ZfP 37 (1926) pp. 895 [Kline's part of Klein-Gordon equation] + Bothe, Walther (1926). "Über die Kopplung zwischen elementaren Strahlungsvorgängen." ZfP 37, 547-567. ("On the coupling between elementary radiation processes"). In Volume 40, "Zur Deutung der Molekülspektren " by Friedrich Hund (ZfP 40 pp. 742-764, 1927) introduces the concept of quantum tunneling. "Über nicht kombinierende Terme in der neueren Quantentheorie" by Eugene Wigner (ZfP 40 pp. 492-500 and 883-892, 1926) introduced Hamiltonian invariance and its implications for quantum transitions. and "Der Comptoneffekt nach der Schrödingerschen Theorie" by Walter Gordon (ZfP 40 pp. 117, 1926) presents Gordon's part of Klein-Gordon equation. CONDITION & DETAILS: 4to. (9.25 x 6.25 inches; 231 x 156mm). Three volumes uniformly bound in a bluish, dark grey buckram; gilt-lettered at the spine; tightly and very solidly bound. Bears no library markings whatsoever; NOT ex-libris. Minor age toning throughout each. Volume 37: [vii], 929pp. Volume 38: [vii], 950pp. Volume 40: [viii], 911pp. Very good condition.

This Island Earth (Original screenplay for the 1955 film)

Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1954. Final script for the 1955 film, based on the story "The Alien Machine" by Raymond F. Jones, later expanded into a novel with the same title as the film. Along with "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (1951) and "Forbidden Planet" (1956), "This Island Earth" stands as one of the most intelligent and elaborate science fiction films of the 1950s, and indeed holds up today as one of the great genre films of the twentieth century, most especially on the basis of speculative fiction--a dimension that most science fiction films fail to penetrate. Peach studio wrappers, noted as FINAL SCREENPLAY on the front wrapper, and dated January 21, 1954. Holograph pencil notation "Director Joe Newman" is present on the front wrapper in an unknown hand. Several leaves precede the title page, including a cast list (meaning that this script was likely the very last revision), and two subsequent leaves noting name changes of characters. Title page present, with a credit for screenwriter Coen. 109 leaves, mimeograph, with blue and pink revision pages throughout, dated variously between 1/28/54 and 2/11/54. Pages and wrapper about Near Fine, bound with two gold brads.

        Live and Let Die.

London: Jonathan Cape, 1954., 1954. First Issue, Second State. SIGNED by the illustrator Kenneth Lewis, with added inscription 'the dust jacket artist'. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper-covered boards, titled and decorated in gilt, with original dustwrapper crediting artist Kenneth Lewis to the front flap. The jacket is in the final proof-state with unclipped corners and correct spacing within the Irish Times quote on the rear panel. The front flap features a portion of the printer's guide colour marker-dot. This is the second state of the first issue, with Lewis' credit appearing 27mm below the final line of blurb on the front flap immediately below the blurb on the front flap, about two-thirds down. A very good copy; both book and jacket exhibiting some acceptable general wear, gilt to the covers remains bright, bumped at crown, jacket with a few small chips to extremities, clean rear panel. A very good example with impeccable provenance; I was fortunate enough to make the acquanitance of illustrator Ken Lewis whilst researching the bibliographical nuances of Ian Fleming.
