The Dolmen Chapbook. A Miscellany in Twelve Parts

Dolmen Press, November 1954-1960. One of very few complete sets. Twelve parts in the extremely rare original loose folded wrapper with an illustration by Eric Patton in red on the cover and titling in black, our folder is rather torn up the spine but still connected. One of very few complete sets. With the barely noticeable blindstamp of the Library of T.M. Ramsay on the folder. It is very rare to see all 12 chapbooks together, some issues being extremely rare and most being published in editions of only 250. The idea behind them was to reprint short texts with illustrations using various type formats and techniques within a uniform page size. Gibbings wrote expressing an interest in the work and sent his County Cork fable The Perfect Wife which was printed with his wood engravings. Miller writes: "The series gives a fair picture of the very personal interests which informed the Press at this time". Several of the chapbooks were issued later in special forms. The titles are as follows: 1. The Ballad of Jane Shore by Donagh Mac Donagh. Handcoloured cut by Eric Patton. In Polyphilus type. Nov. 1954. 2. A Wexford Carol. With a handcoloured design by Leslie MacWeeney. In Polyphilus type. Dec. 1954. 3. The Perfect Wifeby Robert Gibbings with wood engravings by the author. 240 ordinary copies. June 1955. 4. Thirty Three Triads by Thomas Kinsella, decorated by Pauline Bewick. In Caslon type. August 1955. 5. Death of a Queen by Thomas Kinsella, drawings by Bridget Swinton. In Poliphilus type. April 1956. 6. The Mines of Siberiay by Arland Ussher, designs by Nelson Paine. In Caslon type. May 1956. 7. The Loves of Bregog and Mullaby Edmund Spenser, handcoloured monotypes by Leslie MacWeeney. In Poliphilus type. Sept. 1956. 8. O'Reilly by Richard Weber, typographic decorations by Liam Miller.         LE TARTUFFE [and] DON JUAN

Nice and Paris: l'Imprimerie Nationale de Monaco, 1954. No. IX of XXV COPIES reserved for the collaborators and the friends of the artist (in addition to 700 regular copies) n. Hardcover. One of 25 Specials, with an Extra Suite of the Plates and an Original Watercolor. 241 x 191 mm (9 1/2 x 7 1/2"). 4 p.l. 11-247, [1] pp., [1] leaf (colophon). No. IX of XXV COPIES reserved for the collaborators and the friends of the artist (in addition to 700 regular copies). Contemporary green crushed morocco by Jean Santin (stamp-signed on front turn-in), smooth spine with gilt titling, gilt-ruled turn-ins, pale green watered silk endleaves, all edges gilt. With title page vignettes, frontispiece at the beginning of each work, and numerous illustrations in the text by Jean Gradassi, all hand-colored by the atelier of Edmond Vairel using the pochoir technique, WITH AN EXTRA SUITE OF THE 45 ILLUSTRATIONS bound after the text, and with AN ORIGINAL VERSION of an illustration from Don Juan INSCRIBED BY THE ARTIST to "Madame Hicks" and identified by him on the verso, bound in at front. Pages ruled in red, two half titles printed in red. Joints a little rubbed, spine uniformly sunned, just a hint of soiling to the covers, otherwise very fine, the binding lustrous and the text immaculate. Done on high quality Japanese vellum, this is an especially pleasing deluxe edition--with richly colored pochoir illustrations--of two of Molière's great comedies. Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, known as Molière (1622-73), is generally credited with having "created modern French comedy by giving it a serious basis, where there had previously been little but farces and comedies of intrigue on Italian or Spanish models." ("Oxford Companion") Both works here caused great controversy upon their theatrical premieres. "Le Tartuffe" is one of the playwright's great masterpieces, telling the story of a religious hypocrite who uses his false piety to insinuate himself into the home of a benefactor and take over all of his property. It was decried for its calumnies against religion and was banned by the king from public performance in 1664. The libertine title character in "Don Juan" also mocks religion, primarily by his promiscuity and adultery, and this play, though popular, was suppressed by the authorities as well. The illustrations by Jean Gradassi (1907-89) capture the lascivious Tartuffe and swashbuckling Don Juan perfectly. The rich coloring was done by Edmond Vairel, known for the pochoir stencilling of one of the great livres d'artistes of the 20th century, Henri Matisse's "Jazz."

        Live and Let Die

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1954. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine and roundel to front board gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box made by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine gently rolled, a little foxing to edges. An excellent copy in the bright jacket that has some minor nicks to extremities. First edition, first impression, in the first issue jacket without the design credit slug to the front flap. The earliest dust jackets issued made no mention of Kenneth Lewis and at some point the need was recognised to credit his work. A stamp was made and as a stopgap existing jackets were overstepped beneath the blurb on the front flap. This slightly amateurish solution was swiftly abandoned and the jacket was reset and reprinted to include the Lewis credit. Copies of the first impression exist with all three states though we note that the third state dust jacket may readily be found on reprints and must be regarded with some suspicion. What remains palpable is that copies of the first issue in such condition as the present example are increasingly hard to find.

Photo Albums and Scrapbooks from an American Family's Trip to Europe. "Holiday Abroad: Dec. 13, 1954 - Jan. 18, 1955" (Two Volumes)

Wisconsin, England, Scotland, Germany, France, et al, 1954-1955. Hardcover. Fine. Leatherette with ornate gilt-stamped border; two volumes, folio (390x285mm); contains about 300 original photographs (silver prints, various sizes, but average about 115x75mm) and as many (or more) ephemeral items, mounted to the recto and verso of pale grey leaves, much of it with handwritten captions beneath; interspersed with 30 typed diaristic essays (usually 2 to 5 pages, on the recto only, 215x330mm), each with an original ink sketch in color. Also includes 6 small cyanotypes. Photographs are nicely composed, exposed, printed, and arranged, and include landmarks and landscapes, airports and airplanes, cars, skiing, interiors, and candid snapshots of family and friends (tho these are in the minority -- and dad, Fred, who continued to work throughout the trip, is not shown). Ephemera includes immunization letters, airline memorabilia, bon voyage and holiday cards, postcards, newspaper clippings, maps, menus (including a cocktail menu), beer coasters, telegrams, hotel stationery, a program from Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap" at Ambassador Theatre), and more. Compiled by Kathryn Meyer, the matriach of the family; her essays record her casual impressions of the culture (remarking on food, manners, and daily activities); astute observations of flowers, art, and architecture (including lingering evidence of, or recovery from, WWII); as well as historical anecdotes and context. A detailed account of a long journey from Chicago to London, Amsterdam, the Hague, Dusseldorf, Heidelberg, Zurich, St. Moritz, Paris, Ayr (Scotland), Hamburg, and Buxtehude. The Meyers include Frederick John Meyer (a potato chip king, who founded Red Dot Foods in Madison, Wisconsin, in the 1930s), Kathryn, and their teenage children, John (a student at Purdue) and Carol. This travelogue is remarkable for its detail, its appealing design, the style in which the family travels (they're obviously well-to-do), the things that remain the same (airports are exhausting, American Christmas is too commercial but nonetheless awesome), and the moments that make a trip unique (among other things, Fred winds up next to John Noble on his return flight home, having just been released after 10 years imprisoned in Russia -- a letter from Noble is included on the final page). The Meyers stay with John Sword at Craigweil House in Ayr, and Kathryn describes seeing a Bontemps bird for the first time, and includes numerous pictures of the house and Sword's famous collection of cars. From the expected (Big Ben! Parliament!) to the unexpected, these two rich volumes capture an enviable journey.

This, along with a cover especially designed by the artist has been realized under the direction of Teriade, with the master printers Draeger Freres for the heliogravure plates in black and white, and Mourlot Freres for the lithography in color. An exceptionally bright, well-preserved example of this gorgeous undertaking in the publisher's dust jacket and unprinted acetate dustwrapper.         A remarkable set of 20 original, candid photographs from Marilyn Monroe's historic 1954 concert for American troops in Korea, featuring a very rare image of Marilyn incognito!

[Korea, Japan], [February 1954]. 3.5" x 5". "A collection of 20 unpublished black and white photographs, 3.5"" x 5"" each, taken by a American G.I. stationed in Korea in early 1954, the majority of which document Marilyn Monroe's performance before 9,000 servicemen. The photographs bear some light marginal wear including a few small corner creases, a few mild scratches to the emulsion, else fine condition overall.By the end of 1953, Monroe had grown weary of the terms of her contract with 20th Century Fox which gave her no power over the films in which she would appear?"nor a salary commensurate with her rapidly growing stardom. Tiring of being typecast, she refused to appear on the set of her latest project, yet anther musical comedy, The Girl in Pink Tights, with Frank Sinatra. In response, the studio suspended Monroe. To counter any negative publicity, she embarked on a self-promotion campaign. On January 14, she married Joe DiMaggio and the pair flew to Japan, combining a honeymoon with a previously scheduled business trip in which DiMaggio, together with Lefty O'Doul, helped to promote baseball in that country.Upon their arrival in Tokyo, the couple was overwhelmed by mobs of fans eager to see Marilyn, overshadowing her new husband?"much to his chagrin. While DiMaggio and O'Doul attended to their coaching duties in Japan, Marilyn, together with O'Doul's wife Jean, flew to Busan, Korea where she performed a grueling series of ten USO shows in four days. While exhausting, Marilyn found the performances and the attention exhilarating. Speaking to reporters, she remarked, ""I never felt like a movie star before ?" really in my heart ?" before I came to Korea."" (AP, February 19, 1954) Of particular interest is a rare candid shot of Marilyn incognito. She is wearing a pair of aviator sunglasses, a large military parka with her hair pulled back as she walks with Jean O'Doul and another unidentified woman. Marilyn Monroe had the rare ability to change in and out of her public persona at will. By merely changing her posture and walk, she could transform herself from an anonymous blonde into the familiar iconic bombshell. There is an oft-told story of Marilyn walking with a friend on a crowded New York sidewalk with a companion, donning a scarf, sunglasses and a big coat. To her companion's amazement she was unmolested by passers-by, despite her status as a celebrity. Amazed, her companion remarked at the circumstance, and Marilyn grinned and asked, ""Do you want to see her?"" At that point she took off her scarf and glasses, made a slight adjustment in her face and posture, and in an instant she magically transformed from Norma Jean into Marilyn. Within minutes, she was mobbed with autograph hounds."

        ASK THE DUST

New York: Bantam Books, 1954. First Edition. New. First Printing in paperback format (Bantam #1194). A Fine copy, and the basis for Robert Towne's 2006 film starring Colin Farrell, Salma Hayek, and Donald Sutherland. To put things into perspective, we'll start with this: the book is in unparalleled condition. The Bantam edition of Ask the Dust is, without question, more uncommon than both the 1939 Stackpole edition and the 1980 reissue by Black Sparrow. Few copies turn up, and those that do are generally well-worn and have serious condition issues. This is an unread copy, virtually unrubbed, and without any creasing whatsoever. The rust-colored edgestaining is even and unblemished, and the brilliant Harry Schaare cover painting is bright and clean. Far and away the most attractive edition of Fante's masterpiece, and the first to show a detailed (and somewhat accurate) rendering of Arturo and Camilla. If you look closely, Schaare's rendering of Arturo Bandini resembles Fante's likeness quite accurately, and makes one wonder whether Fante might have been the subject for this cover painting. Copies in lesser condition will invariably turn up from time to time, but if you we're holding out for a perfect copy, you'd do well to purchase this one. After many years of active searching, this is unquestionably the best copy we've seen or handled.

The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings)

George Allen and Unwin, London 1954 - The first book in Tolkien's famous "Lord of the Rings" Trilogy. Book Near Fine with contemporary reviews tipped in on the rear paste-down, otherwise clean and unmarked. Cloth and spine titling, bright and fresh. In a Near Fine dust jacket that has a subtle, archival tape repair to separation at the lower edge of the front flap. Minor toning to the spine and soiling at the extremities, otherwise an attractive example. With just 3000 copies printed, this book is generally the toughest of the three books to find in dust jacket and in collectible condition. A timeless classic and a cornerstone of the fantasy genre, "The Lord of The Rings" follows the adventures of the hobbit, Frodo Baggins, and his compatriots as they battle the Dark Lord, Sauron, and attempt to destroy the ring that gives him power over Middle Earth. Tolkien began writing the novel when he was 45 and it took him 12 years to finish it. The books, which were inspired by Tolkien's interest in subjects as far reaching as mythology and philology, went on to become a sensation - selling over 150 million copies and being translated into over 30 languages. W.H. Auden called "The Lord of the Rings" a "masterpiece", and it has appeared on Le Monde's list of the 100 best books of the century. The books were also adapted into the Oscar award winning film trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson and starring Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, and Viggo Mortensen. "?among the greatest works of imaginative fiction of the twentieth century." (Contemporary Sunday Telegraph Review). Near Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Casino Royale

Macmillan, New York 1954 - A sharp, Fine copy of the book with the title page over-opened, otherwise in excellent condition. Clean and unmarked. In a Near Fine dust jacket that is lightly rubbed on the rear panel, with the spine gently faded and the spine ends with minor wear. The extremely rare, first state of the dust jacket with no corners clipped. [Gilbert A1b (1.1)] It seems to be 20 times as rare as the second state dust jacket, maybe 100 times. With copies of the British first fetching record prices, this is an attractive alternative for the discriminating Bond collector.Fleming's first James Bond novel - where the world renowned series began. Published in 1953, Casino Royale follows Bond as he attempts, over a game of cards, to ruin evil banker and KGB member Le Chiffre. The book also introduces the characters of Vesper Lynd and Felix Leiter. Fleming wrote the book at a furious pace - it took two months - from his estate in Jamaica. The idea from the novel came from Fleming's own experience serving in the Naval Intelligence Division of the Admiralty during World War II. He went on a trip to Portugal which, because of its neutrality, was home to spies from both Axis and Allied powers and it's thought Fleming lost a great deal of money playing cards against a high level German spy. The book inspired a 1967 comedy, starring David Niven, Woody Allan, and Orson Welles as well as a more faithful 2006 adaptation with Daniel Craig, Eva Green, and Mads Mikkelsen. In a contemporary review in The Daily Telegraph, John Betjeman wrote: "Ian Fleming has discovered the secret of the narrative art .". Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition]
