        [The Lord of the Rings:]

London: George Allen and Unwin Ltd,, 1954-1955. The Fellowship of the Ring; The Two Towers; The Return of the King. 3 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spines, top edges red. With the dust jackets. Each volume housed in a custom red cloth solander box with maroon labels to spines. Folding map at the end of each volume. Contemporary Foyle's ticket to front pastedown of vol. I. Spine-ends very lightly bumped, corners faintly rubbed, top edge of Fellowship slightly splashed and that of Two Towers negligibly so. An excellent set, internally fine and the maps especially clean, in the dust jackets with ring-and-eye motifs bright and fresh, a little rubbing and a few nicks at spine-ends, and otherwise vols. I and II each with one short nick along the top edges. First editions, first impressions, the Fellowship in first state with signature mark "4" present on p. 49. One of a possible 3,000 sets in first impression throughout, though in practice a work that was often read to pieces, with the dust jackets a particularly rare survival. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most influential literary works of the century. Its first reception was mixed: favourable and perceptive reviews from C. S. Lewis and from W. H. Auden, who had attended Tolkien's Oxford lectures, were countered by others who were hostile, sometimes bitterly so. But the trilogy went on to astonishing sales and forged a major change in public literary taste. "Heroic fantasy" has since become one of the most commercially successful literary genres, having had a transformative impact upon the entertainment industry from electronic games to cinema.

Solvable and Unsolvable Problems [pp. 7–23 in Science News 31] [SOLD WITH] Turing's obituary by Max Newman, original newspaper clipping, loosely laid in

Penguin Books 1954 - Whole volume of Penguin Science News 31, containing Turing's final publication. LOOSELY LAID IN IS TURING'S OBITUARY, PUBLISHED IN THE TIMES AND WRITTEN BY HIS COLLEAGUE MAX NEWMAN. 'Solvable and Unsolvable Problems' is described by Turing's biographer as follows: "His last publication was in Penguin Science News, written like a modern Scientific American article [.]. Written vividly but from the perspective of a pure mathematician, its final words concerned the interpretation of unsolvable problems, such as the halting problem for Turing machines." The obituary, which is loosely laid in here, was published in The Times, 16 June 1954, and is of course an exceptionally scarce document, not to mention a poignant one. It is also important because Newman specifically claims that Turing was interested in the possibility of building a real computer as early as the late 1930s, a time when Turing's published work was entirely theoretical. The original clipping offered here is therefore a wonderful survival. Condition: near fine; Science News is in remarkable condition, the only point of note being the age-toning to the paper that is found on all Penguins of this period; there are one or two minute nicks to the cover and spine but these are almost too small to note; the newspaper clipping is likewise age-toned, and is of course folded, but is also in excellent condition.         Seven Years in Tibet

New York: E.P. Dutton & Company, 1954. First American edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Lengthily inscribed by Heinrich Harrer in the year of publication in both English and Tibetan. Fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with some chips to the spine panel. Seven Years in Tibet is an adventure classic that recounts Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer's 1943 escape from a British internment camp in India, his daring trek across the Himalayas, and his happy sojourn in Tibet, then, as now, a remote land little visited by foreigners. Warmly welcomed, he eventually became tutor to the Dalai Lama, teenaged god-king of the theocratic nation. The author's vivid descriptions of Tibetan rites and customs capture its unique traditions before the Chinese invasion in 1950, which prompted Harrer's departure. "One of the grandest and most incredible adventure stories I have ever read" (Santha Rama Rau, The New York Times Book Review).

        The Art of Eating

Cleveland: The World Publishing Company, 1954. First edition. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by M.F.K. Fisher on the front free endpaper. Light rubbing to the bottom boards, very good in a very good dust jacket with some wear to the spine crown. "How wonderful to have here in my hands the essence of M.F.K. Fisher, whose wit and fulsome opinions on food and those who produce it, comment upon it, and consume it are as apt today as they were several decades ago, when she composed them. Why did she choose food and hunger she was asked, and she replied, 'When I write about hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth, and the love of it . . . and then the warmth and richness and fine reality of hunger satisfied.' This is the stuff we need to hear, and to hear again and again" (Julia Child).
