Picasso and the Human Comedy: A Suite of 180 Drawings by Picasso (Verve #29/30)

Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York 1954 - The 1954 1st edition of this suite of 180 Picasso drawings, which constitutes "Verve" issues 29/30. A solid, VG folio in its pictorial boards (which make up 2 Picasso lithographs themselves). And in a crisp, VG example of the matching pictorial dustjacket, which shows light chipping --and several small closed tears-- at the spine crown and along the upper edges. Still though, solid and very presentable. From the front dustjacket flap: "In this magnificent series of drawings Picaso reviews and comments upon his whole prodigious career. Styles and periods, the persons and inventions that have filled his incomparable canvases are held up before the detached eye of the master. This work has been produced under the direction of Teriade by the Master Printes Draeger Freres for the heliogravure in black and white and Moulot Freres for the lithography in color. The American edition is published through the co-operation of Verve and stands as one of their finest creations." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

THE MOUSETRAP (In Original Blue Gilt Presentation Binding as Commissioned By Agatha Christie)

Samuel French, London 1954 - Christie, Agatha. THE MOUSETRAP. A Play In Two Acts. London: Samuel French, (1954). First (Acting) Edition. A Fine fresh copy bound in blue cloth with gold lettering, still retaining its original glassine dustwrapper (light contact marks to upper board, bit of off-setting to front-free endpaper, a few tears and nicks to the fragile glassine). On the upper board, along with the title and Agatha Christie's name, is the date 25th November 1958. One of a very small number of copies personally bound at the request of Agatha Christie for presentation to members of the original cast and crew, to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the play's success. The Samuel French editions were only printed in paperback form, these splendid author-bound examples are the ideal exception. Two other copies are known to us. One presented to leading actor Richard Attenborough, the other to director Hubert Gregg. This copy is unsigned, appears fresh and untouched, and still bears its original glassine wrapper; one can only guess as to whether it was indeed a gift to a specific person or simply a leftover copy. In any case, the book is lovely and one couldn't find a better example of this Agatha Christie rarity. THE MOUSETRAP has been playing continuously in London's West End Theater District since 1952, an extraordinary theatrical feat, and is nearly as iconic to London's tourist scene as Big Ben or Buckingham Palace. It reached 25,000 performances in 2012 and tickets are still available! [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Lewis Strauss defends his decision to strip J. Robert Oppenheimer of his security clearances

Washington, July 13, 1954. 8" x 10.5". "Typed Letter Signed, ""Lewis Strauss,"" as Chairman of the United States Atomic Energy Commission, 1 page, 8"" x 10.5"", Washington, July 13, 1954 to Mort Lewis of New York concerning the revocation of J. Robert Oppenheimer's security clearance in June 1954. Offered together with a retained copy of Lewis' letter to President Dwight Eisenhower concerning the Oppenheimer affair and printed pamphlet: United States Atomic Energy Commission, In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer Texts of Principal Documents and Letters of Personnel Security Board General Manager Commissioners Washington, D.C. May 27, 1954, through June 29, 1954 (Washington: United States Government Printing Office, 1954) 67pp. 8vo. housed in titled paper wraps. Minor paperclip stains affect top left of letter and pamphlet, ink emendation to front wrap of pamphlet, minor marginal wear and expected folds to letter, else fine.Lewis Strauss (1896-1974) was a businessman, philanthropist and public official who figured prominently in the development of nuclear weapons after the close of the Second World War. His first interactions with Oppenheimer occurred in 1947, when Strauss, then a trustee of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey, offered the former head of the Manhattan Project the office of director. However the two shared little in common. Strauss, also a member of the Atomic Energy Commission, was a conservative Republican, while Oppenheimer was firmly wed to the left, and had numerous communist associations. Over the ensuing years the two clashed over a variety of issues concerning U.S. nuclear policy. When Dwight Eisenhower offered Strauss the chairmanship of the Atomic Energy Commission, he accepted the post on the condition that Oppenheimer be excluded from all classified atomic work. Suspicious of Oppenheimer's former communist associations, and his tendency to downplay Soviet nuclear capabilities, in the fall of 1953, Strauss requested J. Edgar Hoover to begin surveillance of Oppenheimer, a task the F.B.I. Director eagerly accepted. In December 1953, the Atomic Energy Commission blindsided Oppenheimer with a list of charges which became the subject of a month-long series of hearings in May 1953 that resulted in the father of the Atomic Bomb being stripped of all his security clearances and never to work in government service again. The Atomic Energy Commission's decision enraged many, including Mort Lewis of New York City, who wrote a strongly-worded letter to President Eisenhower, observing among other things, that ""Dr. Oppenheimer's past associations were apparently an open book to those in authority. He made no attempt to conceal them. He made vast contributions to the development of the atomic bomb and apparently to the hydrogen bomb as well... Simply saying that we now have stronger, tighter security measures, means nothing in this case. Dr. Oppenheimer already has more knowledge of the atom and hydrogen bombs, I have read, in his head, than any other man in this country. To cut him off from atomic and hydrogen bomb secret information now is ridiculous when he has this information already...""Eisenhower passed Lewis' letter along to Strauss, who responded on July 13, 1954, enclosing the present published report from the Atomic Energy Commission, and referring Lewis to ""My conclusion on the principle issues involved... on pages 51 - 54 of the enclosure..."" and adding, ""I hope that an understanding of all of the factors in this case will lead you to the conclusion that the decision of the Commission not to restore the clearance of Dr. Oppenheimer was proper... I am certain that each of the Commissioners acted in accord with the dictates of his own conscience and in conformity with his oath of office as an official of our Government charged with especially grave responsibilities in these critical times."""

        History of Economic Analysis.

New York: Oxford University Press, 1954. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Edited by Elizabeth Boody Schumpeter. Light rubbing, near fine in a very good dust jacket with a few small chips to the crown of the spine. Uncommon in the original dust jacket. At the time of his death in 1950, Joseph Schumpeter was one of the great economists of the first half of the 20th century and was working on his monumental History of Economic Analysis. A complete history of efforts to understand the subject of economics from ancient Greece to the present, this book is an important contribution to the history of ideas as well as to economics. Although never fully completed, it has gained recognition as a modern classic due to its broad scope and original examination of significant historical events. Complete with a new introduction by Mark Perlman, who outlines the structure of the book and puts Schumpeters work into current perspective, History of Economic Analysis remains a reflection of Schumpeters diverse interests in history, philosophy, sociology, and psychology. Major topics include the techniques of economic analysis, contemporaneous developments in other sciences, and the sociology of economics; economic writings from Plato and Aristotle up through the time of Adam Smith, including the medieval scholastics and natural-law philosophers; the work of Malthus, Mill, Ricardo, Marx, and the important European economists; the history, sociology, psychology, and economics of the period 1879-1914; and modern economic developments. Schumpeter perceived economics as a human science, and this lucid and insightful volume reflects that perception, creating a work that is of major importance to the history of economics.

London: George Allen and Unwin Ltd,, 1954-1955. The Fellowship of the Ring; The Two Towers; The Return of the King. 3 volumes, octavo. Original red cloth, gilt-lettered spines, top edges red. With the dust jackets. Each volume housed in a custom red cloth solander box with maroon labels to spines. Folding map at the end of each volume. Contemporary Foyle's ticket to front pastedown of vol. I. Spine-ends very lightly bumped, corners faintly rubbed, top edge of Fellowship slightly splashed and that of Two Towers negligibly so. An excellent set, internally fine and the maps especially clean, in the dust jackets with ring-and-eye motifs bright and fresh, a little rubbing and a few nicks at spine-ends, and otherwise vols. I and II each with one short nick along the top edges. First editions, first impressions, the Fellowship in first state with signature mark "4" present on p. 49. One of a possible 3,000 sets in first impression throughout, though in practice a work that was often read to pieces, with the dust jackets a particularly rare survival. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most influential literary works of the century. Its first reception was mixed: favourable and perceptive reviews from C. S. Lewis and from W. H. Auden, who had attended Tolkien's Oxford lectures, were countered by others who were hostile, sometimes bitterly so. But the trilogy went on to astonishing sales and forged a major change in public literary taste. "Heroic fantasy" has since become one of the most commercially successful literary genres, having had a transformative impact upon the entertainment industry from electronic games to cinema.

Hard Candy. A Book of Stories

New Directions, (New York) 1954 - First edition. Tall octavo. Some soiling and a small stain along the edge of the spine, about very good in a worn, first issue royal blue slipcase, in a custom chemise and quarter morocco clamshell case. The Dedication Copy, Inscribed by Tennessee Williams to Paul Bowles at a later date: "To Paul, for many years. Tennessee, 1962." Both Paul and Jane Bowles have Signed their names beneath the printed dedication: "For Jane and Paul Bowles." Additionally, in the upper corner of the flyleaf where Williams's inscription appears, Paul Bowles has printed: "Paul Bowles / Jane Bowles / Tangier 1954."
