Light rubbing to the bottom boards, very good in a very good dust jacket with some wear to the spine crown. "How wonderful to have here in my hands the essence of M.F.K. Fisher, whose wit and fulsome opinions on food and those who produce it, comment upon it, and consume it are as apt today as they were several decades ago, when she composed them. Why did she choose food and hunger she was asked, and she replied, 'When I write about hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth, and the love of it . . . and then the warmth and richness and fine reality of hunger satisfied.' This is the stuff we need to hear, and to hear again and again" (Julia Child).

Reach for the Sky. The Story of Douglas Bader. [Sixth Impression]. SIGNED COPY IN FULL MOROCCO

Collins [1954] 8vo., Sixth Impression, with frontispiece and 24 plates on 12; handsomely bound in burgundy full crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands tooled in gilt, second and fourth compartments lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON DEDICATION. Published five months after the first impression. Written by Paul Brickhill (already celebrated as the author of another RAF classic 'The Dam Busters', 1951), 'Reach for the Sky' remains the best account of the legless Battle of Britain hero. It was the basis of Lewis Gilbert's hugely successful feature film (1954) starring Kenneth More in what was arguably his finest role. One of the legendary figures of the Royal Air Force, Douglas Bader was from the outset an outstanding athlete. As a cadet at Cranwell he gained his 'blues' for cricket, rugby, hockey and boxing. He represented the RAF at both cricket and rugby and would probably have been capped for England but for the accident that changed his life and created a legend. In 1931 a near - fatal air crash left him legless. Knowing that no man with such a handicap had ever walked without a stick he nevertheless found his way back to fitness playing tennis, golf and many others sports. He even flew again, until the authorities determined that a pilot without legs could not fly and discharged him from the service. With the outbreak of War he fought to be readmitted, not merely to a desk job, but back to the cockpit. Finally he was given command of a flight which quickly increased to five squadrons as the RAF realised that he was not only an outstanding pilot but an inspired leader of men and a fighter tactician almost of genius. Even as a POW his spirit was such that his captors were forced at one stage to remove his artificial limbs to prevent the chance of his escaping. Enser, p.375 (recording the first edition)

London: Photography, 1954., 1954. First Edition. Wide octavo. Bound in pictorial soft paper boards. Black and white photographs throughout. Binding is a little rubbed, creased, worn to edges. Internally clean. With a foreword by Basil Burton. This photo essay follows a woman as she returns home, undresses, smokes a cigarette, gets ready to go out, and then heads to an empty hotel bar, where she apparently waits for an acquaintance. The woman is in fact Groebli's wife, Rita, and the collection has rightly been described as both wistful and romantic. Swiss-born, Groebli is known better in Germany, though this collection demonstrates his claim to be a world-class photo essayist.

An Archive Relating to the Career of Broadway Actress Marian Winters

      - Most significantly, this archive contains seven holograph letters from Tyrone Power (signed ÒTyroneÓ); 13 pages in total. One is dated 1954, and the others, while undated, are also from the fifties; three are on his stationery, the rest on hotel letterheads. In addition, there are two Christmas cards and one for Easter, all signed ÒTyrone.Ó For the most part, the letters are to both Winters and her then-husband, and these are especially warm, friendly and chatty. Winters starred with Katharine Cornell and Power in the American production of FryÕs The Dark is Light Enough (her own copy of the English first edition; with a card inscribed by Fry and with two typed pages of additions and her annotations throughout, is included, as are three programs). Writing from London, probably in 1956, He refers to his movie work, ÒWe started the film last Monday, & this has been a bitch of a week. I think this Ôflick-makingÕ is for the younger generation.but itÕs fun to have oneÕs own production, & weÕre a wonderful cast & a hell of a story.Ó Power mentions that heÕll .Óbring ÔDevilÕs DiscipleÕ into town for a limited run sometime in October.Ó and that Ò.ÕDuchinÕ [the Eddie Duchin Story] seems to be doing pretty well - it opens here on the 19th.Ó In this archive are three programs for the Fry play, with Cornell, Power and Winters, a Playbill signed by the cast for Nobody Loves an Albatross (in which she appeared, in 1964) and two Playbills for the Lindsay-Crouse comedy Tall Story (1959), signed by its stars, Winters, Hans Conried and Marc Connolly.
