        A Fable

New York: Random House, 1954 First edition, first printing. Publisher's original burgundy cloth, with three cross illustrations stamped in blind and black to the front board, light pink and metallic silver lettering to the spine; original dust jacket designed by Riki Levinson. A fine copy; unclipped dust jacket, with only a minor nick to the front panel, else bright and clean. Overall, a near fine and very handsome copy. Petersen A37.2b Written over the course of nine years from December 1944 through November 1953, A Fable is, as Random House proclaims, "the crowning achievement of William Faulkner's distinguished career." Partly based on the author's experience as a pilot during World War I, the plot is set in the trenches of France. The story takes place over the course of seven days and examines the internal conflicts each man must go through, a point which is emphasized by the parallels Faulkner draws between Corporal Stephan's struggles and the week-long Passion of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion. A Fable won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

Autograph Letter Signed By Harry S. Truman to Dean Acheson.

Kansas City, Missouri 1954 - Autograph letter signed by Harry S. Truman to Dean Acheson. Five pages, with 2 page transcription of Acheson's 19 October response Truman recounts his near death from an infected gall bladder that required emergency, life-saving surgery, and reflects on his changing popular reputation. "Went to our outdoor theater [on June 19] in Swope Park to see 'Call Me Madam,' which I've never seen (and don't want to)." Truman, in fact, was going to appear in a cameo at the end of the play. But he never made it. While waiting to come on "A pain overtook me which I couldn't stop with all the will power I could exercise and the 'Boss' drove me home." Admitted into the hospital, the "Doc told me that the white corpuscles were increasing at the rate of 1000 an hour and that a little butchering would be necessary. I wrote a codicil to my will and went out - I mean out. They gave me about five or ten gallons of anti-biotics by sticking needles in veins. But they just couldn't kill me." His wife Bess "says I'm worse than a Bridge Club Lady--talk about my operation and bore people to death." He also talks about the difficult task of getting his memoirs published, with an impatient publisher waiting for the promised 300,000 words by the spring of 1954. But the hospital was flooded with flowers during his convalescence and Truman was touched by the genuine concerns expressed for "this still controversial former President." No one, he tells Acheson, "knew the travails of what we went through in those years from Apr. 12, 1945 to Jan. 20, 1953 as did you, Gen. Marshall, [Treasury Secretary] John Snyder and [Secretary of Agriculture] Charlie Brannan." A lengthy, revealing letter about Truman's near death experience. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Longes mac n-Usnig: Being the Exile and Death of the Sons of Usnech

(Dublin): Dolmen Press, 1954. Cranwill, Mia. Tall octavo. 32pp. One of 225 copies. Printed in black with red initials and with a decorative title-page spread, two full-page illustrations, and six pictorial headpieces by Mia Cranwill. The tragic myth of Deirdre and the sons of Usnech, who were slain by the jealous Conchobor, translated into English from the Irish text found in the Book of Leinster. The woodcut illustrations capture the heroine's desolation amidst a romantic Irish setting, with elaborately decorated borders and backgrounds framing the depictions of love found and lost. The image of Dierdre reaching toward the far horizon extends onto the boards, which are covered in paper printed with a repeating version of the woodcut. The boards are backed in white paper and protected with a glassine wrapper. Glassine shows some chipping and loss to edges, with a three-inch closed tear extending from the spine; otherwise, the book is in fine condition.

Hilde Spiel (1911-1990). Portrait, Brustbild der vierzigjährigen Dichterin und Journalistin im Londoner Exil. Öl auf Leinen, signiert A. Purtscher 54, Keilrahmen, 61 x 51 cm.

(London 1954 - (London 1954). A small amount of supportive tape to the upper spine on the verso which does not show through to the front.         F.D.R. meets Ibn Saud.

New York: American Friends of the Middle East, Inc.,, 1954. Octavo. Original green combed cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and front board. Very lightly rubbed, pale toning, a very good coopy. This copy inscribed on the title page; "For Toni and Don Fullerton with grateful memories of Jiddah from their devoted friend Bill Eddy". William Alfred "Bill" Eddy (1896?1962) was the son of Presbyterian missionaries, born in Sidon, Syria, and after graduation from Princeton served in the US Marine Corps during the First World War. He then entered academia, teaching literature at Dartmouth College and the American College in Cairo, president of both Hobart College and William Smith College (1936?42). Re-entering the services in the Second World War with the rank of lieutenant-colonel he was Naval Attaché and Naval Attaché for Air in Cairo, with significant intelligence roles. From 1943 his work as "Special Assistant to the American Minister" based at the American legation in Jeddah was crucial in forging bonds between the Saudi Arabia and the Allies. Post-war Eddy was crucial in the creation of the CIA, and retained his special relationship at the Saudi court. This privately published volume contains his account of the circumstances surrounding the meeting held on the Great Bitter Lake of the Suez Canal in Egypt on board USS Quincy in February 1945 between King Abdul Aziz Al Saud (Ibn Saud), and Franklin Roosevelt, which Eddy organised, and at which he acted as interpreter. It was the first time that the king had left Saudi Arabia.

        Madame De Pompadour.

London: Hamish Hamilton, 1954. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "Mrs. Jean Jeffcoat with best wishes Nancy Mitford Paris 1954." Near fine in a very good dust jacket with a chip to the spine and front panel. Cecil Beaton designed the dust jacket art. Uncommon signed. When Madame de Pompadour became the mistress of Louis XV, no one expected her to retain his affections for long. A member of the bourgeoisie rather than an aristocrat, she was physically too cold for the carnal Bourbon king, and had so many enemies that she could not travel publicly without risking a pelting of mud and stones. History has loved her little better. Nancy Mitford's delightfully candid biography re-creates the spirit of eighteenth-century Versailles with its love of pleasure and treachery. We learn that the Queen was a "bore," the Dauphin a "prig," and see France increasingly overcome with class conflict. With a fiction writer's felicity, Mitford restores the royal mistress and celebrates her as a survivor, unsurpassed in "the art of living," who reigned as the most powerful woman in France for nearly twenty years.

Paris: Denoël, 1954. First French Edition. First Impression. Octavo (17.5cm); photo-illustrated wrappers; 222, [1]pp. Signed and inscribed by both authors on the half-title page: "A Madame Cordroc 'h, avec notre gratitude et l'homage de notre défèrente sympathie / Th. Narcejac / Pierre Boileau." Forward lean, vertical creasing along spine and left edge of front wrapper, with rubbing to joints and extremities (particularly at crown and lower rear joint), with a few faint creases and a handful of tiny spots to upper edge of textblock; recipient's name (in ink) to front endpaper, else clean throughout; Very Good. True first edition of the French crime fiction duo's third novel, preceding the British edition by two years and the American by three. Basis for the iconic 1958 film noir Vertigo, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and Barbara Bel Geddes. Not only is Vertigo widely recognized as Hitchcock's masterpiece, it is also routinely cited by AFI and Sight and Sound as one of the greatest films ever made. Seldom offered in commerce, and for such an important film source book, it is surprisingly underrepresented institutionally; OCLC locates just three holdings in American institutions. The only inscribed copy we have seen. Hubin, p.39.

        Live and Let Die.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1954. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine and roundel to front board gilt. With the dust jacket. Ownership signature to front pastedown blacked out. Light foxing to endpapers and edge of text block; an excellent copy in the jacket with a little rubbing and some nicks to extremities. First edition, first impression, in the first issue jacket without the design credit slug to the front flap. The earliest dust jackets issued made no mention of Kenneth Lewis and at some point the need was recognised to credit his work. A stamp was made and as a stopgap existing jackets were overstamped beneath the blurb on the front flap. This slightly amateurish solution was swiftly abandoned and the jacket was reset and reprinted to include the Lewis credit. Copies of the first impression exist with all three states though we note that the third state dust jacket may readily be found on reprints and ought therefore be regarded with some suspicion.
