[The Lord of the Rings trilogy:]

London: George Allen and Unwin,, 1954?5. The Fellowship of the Ring; The Two Towers; The Return of the King. 3 volumes, octavo. Finely bound in red morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, raised bands, single rule to boards gilt, twin rule to turn-ins gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Each volume has a map illustrated by the author. A fine set. First editions, first impressions, the Lord of the Rings in first state with signature mark "4" present on p. 49. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most influential literary works of the century. Its first reception was mixed: favourable and perceptive reviews from C. S. Lewis and from W. H. Auden, who had attended Tolkien's Oxford lectures, were countered by others who were hostile, sometimes bitterly so. But the trilogy went on to astonishing sales and forged a major change in public literary taste. "Heroic fantasy" has since become one of the most commercially successful literary genres, having a transforming impact upon the entertainment industry, from electronic games to movies.

Molloy. Malone stirbt. Der Namenlose. Wie es ist (Comment c'est). Romane. Deutsch von Erich Franzen (1) bzw. Elmar Tophoven.

The Worship of Love: A Study of Nature Worship Throughout the World [Signed by Longworth; Signed by George Seferis]

London: Torchstream Books, 1954. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good +. An about Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original dark brown cloth (mildly canted, some pushing at the spine ends and board corners, bare traces of wear, a bit of wrinkling to the first plate, spine label sharp and crisp), in a Very Good + example of the scarce dust jacket which matches the free endpapers and pastedowns (small chips with tears at the spine panel's upper corners, tape repairs to the inside of the jacket, tiny wear at upper panel corner turns to the spine flaps, mild wear and tiny chip to the spine label that does not affect the lettering, portions of some signatures are unopened); copy 298 from a Limited Edition of 975 copies, SIGNED BY T. CLIFTON LONGWORTH on the title page and FURTHER SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the front free endpaper to British author Rex Warner, his friend and the translator of some of Seferis' works. The front free endpaper also shows a single line in Greek which is underscored and under which has been drawn a series of arrows. Translated to English, the line, presumably written by Seferis or Longworth, appears to read "worship of sensual love on island of Cyprus" or "praise to worship of love on Cyprus". T. Clifton Longworth was deeply interested in the origins of religious belief and wrote extensively on the topic. In his studies of both ancient religions and present day tribal religions, Longworth determined the worship of love, that is, the adoration of reproductive organs as the symbol of the creative power, to be a common theme, running through the very first religions and constituting the first and most universal form of religious expression. This book presents an extensive study of the topic and, notably, the half-title carries the following printed statement: "The sale of this book is restricted to members of the Medical and Legal Professions, Anthropologists, Psychologists, Sociologists, Ethnologists and Students of Comparative Religion". In his research, Longworth visited Cyprus where he viewed the the sacred Cone of Aphrodite. He discusses it and the marvelous Greek statuary that evolved from it in his Introduction and in the book's first Chapter. George Seferis, a Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, was the first Greek ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Both he and British author Rex Warner - to whom Seferis presumably presented the book - were deeply interested in all things related to Cyprus, thus explaining both the giving of the book by Seferis to Warner and the single line written by under Seferis's signature. Copies of Longworth's books signed by him are quite scarce (this Limited Edition was not called to be signed), as are books signed by George Seferis. This copy, of course, carries both signatures and also constitutes a nice association between two noted authors, the Nobel Laureate George Seferis and the noted author and translator Rex Warner. RARE.

        Horton Hears A Who!

New York: Random House, 1954. First edition. Quarto, original boards. Near fine in a very good price-clipped second issue dust jacket. Inscribed by the author on the verso of the front free endpaper, "For Greg Barrett with best wishes Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss began work on Horton Hears a Who! in the fall of 1953. The book's main theme, "a person's a person no matter how small", was Geisel's reaction to his visit to Japan, where the importance of the individual was an exciting new concept. Geisel, who had harbored strong anti-Japan sentiments before and during World War II, changed his views dramatically after the war and used this book as an allegory for the American post-war occupation of the country. It was adapted to film in 2008, the cast included Jim Carrey and Steve Carell.

Sceaux: Jean-Jacques Pauvert, 1954. 8vo, pp. 245. Original printed yellow wrappers. Later protective slipcase. One or two small spots of colour to wrappers, slight shaving to top edge of rear wrapper affecting the last few pages, otherwise a near fine, unopened copy. SMALL BOOK LABEL OF OLYMPIA PRESS BIBLIOGRAPHER PATRICK KEARNEY TO INSIDE FRONT WRAPPER. First edition, one of 600 numbered copies of which 480 were for sale. This copy out of sequence. GERSHON LEGMAN'S COPY, WITH HIS PENCILLED (ERRONEOUS) ANNOTATION. Anne Declos' notorious sado-masochistic love letter to Jean Paulhan -- who provides the preface to the book -- written in an attempt to reignite their love affair, and to rebut his assertion that women were incapable of writing erotica. For forty years after publication the identity of the book's author remained a secret; only in 1994, in his book The Good Ship Venus, did John de St. Jorre finally unmask (ungimp?) Desclos. St. Jorre's book was a biography of the Paris-based publishing house The Olympia Press; it was Olympia which published an unauthorised English translation of Histoire d'O almost simultaneously with this, the first edition. This copy bears a handwritten (unsigned) note by Gershon Legman, ascribing the authorship of the book to André Pieyre de Mandiargues. Though no stranger to erotica, de Mandiargues had no hand in this. An unknown but very small number of copies of the first edition carry a small red etching by Hans Bellmer on the title page. The etching is not present on this copy.

Fantasy Press, 1954. First Editions. Cloth. VG-Near Fine/Very Good+ in Archival Plastic Cover. A handsome set of all six first trade editions of Edward Elmer "Doc" Smith's well-known Lensmen series with "Triplanetary" inscribed by the author on a tipped-in page after the copyright page: "To the Fantasy Foundation-- with the hope that it will continue to be the Library of Congress of ??." The set includes Triplanetary (1948); Galactic Patrol (1950); Gray Lensman (1951); First Lensman (1952); ; Second Stage Lensmen (1953); and Children of the Lens (1954). Also laid in is a "Solar Credit" at The Detention, signed by Smith. This set is Smith's "History of Civilization," a cornerstone science fiction series, all in the original blue cloth bindings and pictorial dust jackets. The dustjackets are price-clipped on Galactic Patrol and Second Stage Lensmen, and all six have some light wear and darkening to dustjackets and books, some have moderate chips especially at the base of the spines (see the pictures). What is amazing is that the interior of the books are clean and quite bright, very nice for books that are over 65 years old; overall in Very Good+ condition. The Lensman series was a runner-up for the Hugo award for Best All-Time Series (the winner was the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov) and the series was one of the best-selling of the Fantasy Press titles Fantasy Press ever had.         Reach for the Sky. The Story of Douglas Bader. [Sixth Impression]. SIGNED COPY IN FULL MOROCCO

Collins,, [1954]. 8vo., Sixth Impression, with frontispiece and 24 plates on 12; handsomely bound in burgundy full crushed morocco, sides with gilt frame border, back with raised bands tooled in gilt, second and fourth compartments lettered in gilt, all other compartments tooled in gilt, a most attractive copy ideal as a gift or for presentation. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON DEDICATION. Published five months after the first impression. Written by Paul Brickhill (already celebrated as the author of another RAF classic 'The Dam Busters', 1951), 'Reach for the Sky' remains the best account of the legless Battle of Britain hero. It was the basis of Lewis Gilbert's hugely successful feature film (1954) starring Kenneth More in what was arguably his finest role. One of the legendary figures of the Royal Air Force, Douglas Bader was from the outset an outstanding athlete. As a cadet at Cranwell he gained his 'blues' for cricket, rugby, hockey and boxing. He represented the RAF at both cricket and rugby and would probably have been capped for England but for the accident that changed his life and created a legend. In 1931 a near-fatal air crash left him legless. Knowing that no man with such a handicap had ever walked without a stick he nevertheless found his way back to fitness playing tennis, golf and many others sports. He even flew again, until the authorities determined that a pilot without legs could not fly and discharged him from the service. With the outbreak of War he fought to be readmitted, not merely to a desk job, but back to the cockpit. Finally he was given command of a flight which quickly increased to five squadrons as the RAF realised that he was not only an outstanding pilot but an inspired leader of men and a fighter tactician almost of genius. Even as a POW his spirit was such that his captors were forced at one stage to remove his artificial limbs to prevent the chance of his escaping. Enser, p.375 (recording the first edition)

Picasso and the Human Comedy: A Suite of 180 Drawings by Picasso (Verve #29/30)

New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, 1954. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. The 1954 1st edition of this suite of 180 Picasso drawings, which constitutes "Verve" issues 29/30. A solid, VG folio in its pictorial boards (which make up 2 Picasso lithographs themselves). And in a crisp, VG example of the matching pictorial dustjacket, which shows light chipping --and several small closed tears-- at the spine crown and along the upper edges. Still though, solid and very presentable. From the front dustjacket flap: "In this magnificent series of drawings Picaso reviews and comments upon his whole prodigious career. Styles and periods, the persons and inventions that have filled his incomparable canvases are held up before the detached eye of the master. This work has been produced under the direction of Teriade by the Master Printes Draeger Freres for the heliogravure in black and white and Moulot Freres for the lithography in color. The American edition is published through the co-operation of Verve and stands as one of their finest creations."
