Presentation Copies to Ruth Tolman of : THE OPEN MIND and SCIENCE AND THE COMMON UNDERSTANDING [ together with ] a Handwritten Note

Simon & Schuster, New York 1954 - SCIENCE AND THE COMMON UNDERSTANDING, 1954, First Printing, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on front end page - "for Ruth in gratitude & love Robert May - June 1954". Laid in, a single page of typing paper titled "Errata in SCIENCE AND THE COMMON UNDERSTANDING" , denoting 6 errors and a suggested improvement. Also laid in a page torn from "The New Statesman and Nation", dated Dec. 26, 1953 and an undated newspaper clipping from the same period, both concerning Oppenheimer. THE OPEN MIND, 1955, First Printing, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR on front end page - "for Ruth, with my love Robert Christmas 1955". Laid in, a single page , folded, 6 1/2" x 5 1/2", "The Institute for Advanced Study, Office of the Director, Princeton, New Jersey" letterhead, undated and unsigned, which reads - " Ruth Dear, Most of these you have seen at one time or another, but perhaps you would like to have them neat & tidy. The S F talk is still on its way, & I don't yet have it. There is a long letter in me crying to be written to you - it should reach you before this." Both books are Fine in Near Fine dust jackets, light rubbing and small chips at bottom edge of spine folds. Ruth Sherman Tolman was the wife of Richard C. Tolman, and she was Robert Oppenheimer's best friend and confidant. A brilliant psychologist in her own right, she helped lead the effort to make psychology a science, held a key post with the OSS, the forerunner of the CIA, and established some of the first treatments for battle fatigue, which we know today as PTSD. Robert Oppenheimer, the "Father of the Atomic Bomb", head of the Manhattan Project, and the founder of modern theoretical physics in America, became a friend of the Tolman's while in his 20s, staying at their guest house during his time spent going between Caltech and UC Berkeley. Robert and Ruth were rumored to have had a long-running affair, which was disavowed by those who knew them, but recent books have renewed that debate. It is known that Ruth destroyed many of his letters, although some have come to light. While this note doesn't settle that debate, it does, along with the inscription, indicate the intimacy that they shared. Books SIGNED AND INSCRIBED by Oppenheimer are uncommon, and with the note to Ruth, the presentation inscriptions and unique association, this collection of material is RARE.         Il visconte dimezzato

Giulio Einaudi, 1954. In 8°, pagg. 116, (2), brochure editoriale a stampa. Furono pubblicati in totale 58 volumi.

The original spines from the books are tipped in at the rear of each book. An extraordinary set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. The set is newly rebound in Black Morocco Leather, all edges trimmed and gilded, with Gilt stamped design of Tolkiens original line drawing "The Gates of Moria", split between the spines of the three volumes. The set is further characterized by custom Marbled endpapers by Joan Ajala of Australia, black silk ribbon markers, and is housed in a custom clamshell (drop spine) case in matching Black Leather and complimentary stamping. The front boards of the case and books feature Tengwar (Tolkien's Elvish writing) titles and author, as well as Tolkien's own Ring and Eye design from the original dustjackets. The rear of the case and each book is gilt stamped with the JRRT monogram. The front boards of the books have the individual book Titles and author in Tengwar. A true Tolkien Collector's dream set. This is a fabulous design, executed by one of America's premier binders. All are very clean and bright, with a couple of small smudges on occasional page margins, no foxing or offsetting, and none have any writing or signatures. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested.         Das Prinzip Hoffnug, (The Principle of Hope).

Aufbau-Verlag 1954, 1955, 1959, Berlin - Bloch's Major Work - The "monstrous essence of his thought"Volume1: Half-title + TP + Dedication Page + [7]-477 + 1 leaf = Outline of the Work in Three Volumes; Volume 2: Half-title + TP + [5]-512 + 1 leaf = Outline of the Work in Three Volumes; Volume 3: Half-title + TP + [5]-518 + 1 leaf = Outline of the Work in Three Volumes + 1 loose leaf = Errata in Band 1 & 2; Octavo. All Three in First Edition.Published in an edition of 3,000 copies each."In 1933 Bloch left Germany, eventually reaching the United States, where he created his major work, Das Prinzip Hoffnung, a huge work that has been called 'a monstrous essence of his thought'." (EP, Volume 1, p. 321)Bloch observes that throughout history, and in all cultures, people have dreamed of a better life and constructed various kinds of utopias. Utopian dreams are present in art forms such as poetry, drama, music and painting, and in elementary form in children's dreams, fairy-tales, and popular legend. Utopian impulses can also be found in architecture, medicine, sport, dancing and circuses, as well as in specifically utopian literature and in the entire history of religion. Some utopias relate simply to immediate private ends, but the higher kind of revolutionary utopia envisages the end of human suffering. For Bloch, the positive utopia is the expectation of absolute perfection. Revolutionary utopias of past ages were seen by Bloch as reflections of humanity's desire for perfection, post-Marxist utopias were all seen by him as reactionary. Bloch insists the only two possible outcomes to history are absolute destruction and absolute perfection"Bloch's major work and one of the as-yet undigested masterpieces of twentieth century philosophy. Conceived and largely elaborated during Block's long, often impoverished exile in the Unites States where he had expected to publish it under the title Dreams of A Better Life, the work actually appeared after Bloch's return to the GDR, the first two volume receiving the National Prize upon publication, effectively recognizing Block as the GDR's leading philosopher. Soon, however, the undelimitable breadth and profound religious depths of his work led to conflict with the regime and his virtual silencing, though his work continued to appear irregularly. This great work is meant as 'an encyclopedia of hope that attempts to catalogue the surplus of utopian thought (whose unrealized meaning is the crux of the Not-Yet-Conscious) from Early Greek philosopher to the present day.' No less an expositor of that unrealized meaning than George Steiner has written that 'we have lost a characteristic elan, a metaphysic and technique of forward dreaming, of which Ernst Bloch's Das Prinzip Hoffnung is an inspired statement.'" (Wronoski, in Lame Duck. General Catalog, June 1998) original dark blue cloth with very good dust s (minor chipping to some edges). All three dust s very lightly sunned on spines. Front of volume 3 with some sun discoloration. A difficult set of books to assemble due to the place, time and political climate in which it was published. Rare in dust s. Overall, a beautiful set.         Original Manuscript of HRH: THE STORY OF PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH (48pp Heavily Corrected Typescript w/ Authorial Revisions)

1954. Hilton, James (1900-1954). ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT for HRH: THE STORY OF PRINCE PHILIP, DUKE OF EDINBURGH. 48pp, [n.p., n.d. but 1954]. A little known but quite significant manuscript for those interested in the earliest years of England's current Royal Family. -- In the fall of 1954, famed author and Oscar-winning screenwriter James Hilton ("Lost Horizon" "Goodbye, Mr. Chips") ("Mrs. Miniver") was asked by the Hearst Syndicate to provide a Sunday newspaper piece on "England's uncrowned king" Prince Philip who was then only little known to the British public despite being the husband of newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II. Prior to this biography, the only published biographical material on Philip was a short tabloid article by his valet. The full text of Hilton's biography of HRH: The Story of Philip, Duke of Edinburgh was published in book form by Little, Brown (Boston, 1956) and shortly thereafter by Frederick Muller Ltd. (London, 1956). The manuscript's 48 leaves are typed on ordinary yellow paper stock. Virtually every page has been heavily revised by Hilton with much emendation; further, a large amount of additional holograph material appears on the versos consisting of general notes and draft paragraphs. The manuscript is almost entirely complete despite breaks in the pagination including the absence of those leaves numbered [2-5]; a comparison with the printed American text shows Hilton re-worked his opening with generous excisions and additions. Unfortunately Hilton, who traveled from the States to England for background research on this piece, almost immediately fell ill upon his return and died shortly thereafter. Consequently this manuscript represents Hilton's final achievement as a writer after a remarkably successful career -- and thus has dual importance as a first royal biography and a last creative effort by the one of the best loved authors of the era. Although this manuscript was sold with the rest of James Hilton's archive in 1999 by Christie's Los Angeles, it was buried amongst miscellaneous papers at the time and has only recently been identified and fully catalogued. More details and a full index are available upon request. . Signed. Original Manuscript. Unbound. Very Good.

The Worship of Love: A Study of Nature Worship Throughout the World [Signed by Longworth; Signed by George Seferis]

London: Torchstream Books, 1954. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good +. An about Fine copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original dark brown cloth (mildly canted, some pushing at the spine ends and board corners, bare traces of wear, a bit of wrinkling to the first plate, spine label sharp and crisp), in a Very Good + example of the scarce dust jacket which matches the free endpapers and pastedowns (small chips with tears at the spine panel's upper corners, tape repairs to the inside of the jacket, tiny wear at upper panel corner turns to the spine flaps, mild wear and tiny chip to the spine label that does not affect the lettering, portions of some signatures are unopened); copy 298 from a Limited Edition of 975 copies, SIGNED BY T. CLIFTON LONGWORTH on the title page and FURTHER SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the front free endpaper to British author Rex Warner, his friend and the translator of some of Seferis' works. The front free endpaper also shows a single line in Greek which is underscored and under which has been drawn a series of arrows. Translated to English, the line, presumably written by Seferis or Longworth, appears to read "worship of sensual love on island of Cyprus" or "praise to worship of love on Cyprus". T. Clifton Longworth was deeply interested in the origins of religious belief and wrote extensively on the topic. In his studies of both ancient religions and present day tribal religions, Longworth determined the worship of love, that is, the adoration of reproductive organs as the symbol of the creative power, to be a common theme, running through the very first religions and constituting the first and most universal form of religious expression. This book presents an extensive study of the topic and, notably, the half-title carries the following printed statement: "The sale of this book is restricted to members of the Medical and Legal Professions, Anthropologists, Psychologists, Sociologists, Ethnologists and Students of Comparative Religion". In his research, Longworth visited Cyprus where he viewed the the sacred Cone of Aphrodite. He discusses it and the marvelous Greek statuary that evolved from it in his Introduction and in the book's first Chapter. George Seferis, a Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, was the first Greek ever to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature. Both he and British author Rex Warner - to whom Seferis presumably presented the book - were deeply interested in all things related to Cyprus, thus explaining both the giving of the book by Seferis to Warner and the single line written by under Seferis's signature. Copies of Longworth's books signed by him are quite scarce (this Limited Edition was not called to be signed), as are books signed by George Seferis. This copy, of course, carries both signatures and also constitutes a nice association between two noted authors, the Nobel Laureate George Seferis and the noted author and translator Rex Warner. RARE.

Gallimard, 1954. - Gallimard, Paris 1954, 14x21cm, broché. - Prima edizione, una delle copie della stampa. Precious dedica autografa firmata dall'autore Micheline (Deshayes), situato e datato "Meudon 1954". »
