Hilde Spiel (1911-1990). Portrait, Brustbild der vierzigjährigen Dichterin und Journalistin im Londoner Exil. Öl auf Leinen, signiert A. Purtscher 54, Keilrahmen, 61 x 51 cm.

(London 1954 - (London 1954). Food In England

The First UK Printing published by MacDonald in 1954. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. The binding remains tight. A little pushing and fading at the spine tips. The text-block is lightly toned and spotted which has encroached very slightly on the page edges in a few places. Mild offsetting to the end papers. Free from erasures and inscriptions. Small neat previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. The WRAPPER is complete and correctly priced at 30/- net. It is in Very Good++ or better condition and is amazingly clean for its age. Mild edge wear in places. A little loss on the folds in places but only slight. The spine is lightly spotted with far less toning than usually encountered. A small amount of supportive tape to the upper spine on the verso which does not show through to the front. The Hookaway Cowles period wrapper design looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. A wonderful collection of history, anthropology and cookery enhanced by Cowles' B/W illustrations throughout. A very attractive and sharp copy. Highly collectible with such attributes. Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.

        F.D.R. meets Ibn Saud.

New York: American Friends of the Middle East, Inc.,, 1954. Octavo. Original green combed cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine and front board. Very lightly rubbed, pale toning, a very good coopy. This copy inscribed on the title page; "For Toni and Don Fullerton with grateful memories of Jiddah from their devoted friend Bill Eddy". William Alfred "Bill" Eddy (1896?1962) was the son of Presbyterian missionaries, born in Sidon, Syria, and after graduation from Princeton served in the US Marine Corps during the First World War. He then entered academia, teaching literature at Dartmouth College and the American College in Cairo, president of both Hobart College and William Smith College (1936?42). Re-entering the services in the Second World War with the rank of lieutenant-colonel he was Naval Attaché and Naval Attaché for Air in Cairo, with significant intelligence roles. From 1943 his work as "Special Assistant to the American Minister" based at the American legation in Jeddah was crucial in forging bonds between the Saudi Arabia and the Allies. Post-war Eddy was crucial in the creation of the CIA, and retained his special relationship at the Saudi court. This privately published volume contains his account of the circumstances surrounding the meeting held on the Great Bitter Lake of the Suez Canal in Egypt on board USS Quincy in February 1945 between King Abdul Aziz Al Saud (Ibn Saud), and Franklin Roosevelt, which Eddy organised, and at which he acted as interpreter. It was the first time that the king had left Saudi Arabia.

        Madame De Pompadour.

London: Hamish Hamilton, 1954. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication on the front free endpaper, "Mrs. Jean Jeffcoat with best wishes Nancy Mitford Paris 1954." Near fine in a very good dust jacket with a chip to the spine and front panel. Cecil Beaton designed the dust jacket art. Uncommon signed. When Madame de Pompadour became the mistress of Louis XV, no one expected her to retain his affections for long. A member of the bourgeoisie rather than an aristocrat, she was physically too cold for the carnal Bourbon king, and had so many enemies that she could not travel publicly without risking a pelting of mud and stones. History has loved her little better. Nancy Mitford's delightfully candid biography re-creates the spirit of eighteenth-century Versailles with its love of pleasure and treachery. We learn that the Queen was a "bore," the Dauphin a "prig," and see France increasingly overcome with class conflict. With a fiction writer's felicity, Mitford restores the royal mistress and celebrates her as a survivor, unsurpassed in "the art of living," who reigned as the most powerful woman in France for nearly twenty years.

Octavo (17.5cm); photo-illustrated wrappers; 222, [1]pp. Signed and inscribed by both authors on the half-title page: "A Madame Cordroc 'h, avec notre gratitude et l'homage de notre défèrente sympathie / Th. Narcejac / Pierre Boileau." Forward lean, vertical creasing along spine and left edge of front wrapper, with rubbing to joints and extremities (particularly at crown and lower rear joint), with a few faint creases and a handful of tiny spots to upper edge of textblock; recipient's name (in ink) to front endpaper, else clean throughout; Very Good. True first edition of the French crime fiction duo's third novel, preceding the British edition by two years and the American by three. Basis for the iconic 1958 film noir Vertigo, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and Barbara Bel Geddes. Not only is Vertigo widely recognized as Hitchcock's masterpiece, it is also routinely cited by AFI and Sight and Sound as one of the greatest films ever made. Seldom offered in commerce, and for such an important film source book, it is surprisingly underrepresented institutionally; OCLC locates just three holdings in American institutions. The only inscribed copy we have seen. Hubin, p.39.

        Live and Let Die.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1954. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine and roundel to front board gilt. With the dust jacket. Ownership signature to front pastedown blacked out. Light foxing to endpapers and edge of text block; an excellent copy in the jacket with a little rubbing and some nicks to extremities. First edition, first impression, in the first issue jacket without the design credit slug to the front flap. The earliest dust jackets issued made no mention of Kenneth Lewis and at some point the need was recognised to credit his work. A stamp was made and as a stopgap existing jackets were overstamped beneath the blurb on the front flap. This slightly amateurish solution was swiftly abandoned and the jacket was reset and reprinted to include the Lewis credit. Copies of the first impression exist with all three states though we note that the third state dust jacket may readily be found on reprints and ought therefore be regarded with some suspicion.

        Journal littéraire.

1954Paris. Mercure de France. 1954. 19 volumes in-8, broché, non coupés. Infimes traces d'insolation sur quelques volumes. Edition originale.

        The Caves of Steel

Boardman, London 1954 - First edition first printing Boardman 1954. Rare Hardback in any condition with dust jacket. Book is still tight and square. Boards have bumped corners and markings to both. A very tiny but noticeable bump to upper board, with a hint of bend. Title gilt is very nice with only a couple of minor rubs. Text block is clean, with a few minor spots and very light age toning to edges. The paste downs and flypaper have toning, and flypaper is creased. Feels lightly read. Moderate bumping to head and foot of spine, grades as good condition due to the numerous small issues but is still tight and clean and is close to very good. The unclipped jacket has some loss to front of jacket and minor loss to spine ends. Split at head of joint with colour break creasing and minor loss. Small split to top of upper fore edge. Two dark spots to front, and various chips and rubs, Spine has some minor rubs also. Rear is relatively bright and clean, with only minor rubs to edges. Looks and feels better in the hand than the detailed description can relate. Overall a better than good copy, but too many faults to grade as very good. This copy is not ex-lib, not priced clipped and has no inscriptions. This book is fitted with a non adhesive archival quality book protector to make a quality addition to your collection. Note we do not use stock images, the book pictured is the book described. A solid example of this highly collectible and rare first edition first printing title.
