Autograph Letter sending 90th Birthday Wishes to Albert Schweitzer

      - An interesting letter from the American chemist who holds the unique distinction of winning Nobel Prizes in both the Chemistry (1954) and Peace (1962) categories. TLS, one page, 8.5 x 11, Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions letterhead, October 8, 1964. Letter to David Blum, the symphonic conductor and writer on classical music who was organizing a tribute to Albert Schweitzer on the occasion of his 90th birthday. In full: "I am delighted to learn that The Ezterhazy Orchestra will pay tribute to the ninetieth birthday of one of the greatest men in the world, Dr. Albert Schweitzer, on 14 January 1965, and I am happy to join with you in honoring Dr. Schweitzer. One of the finest memories that my wife and I have is that of our two-weeks visit to Dr. Schweitzer in his Hospital in Lambarene, five years ago. I remember especially well the interesting discussions of scientific, political, and moral questions that I was privileged to have with Dr. Schweitzer, in his room, nearly every evening during the period of this visit to Lambarene. Please extend to Dr. Schweitzer the congratulations of both my wife and me, on his ninetieth birthday." A remarkable tribute to the great Alsatian organist, philosopher, theologian and physician who is remembered for his great Bach recordings and his inspiring work as a humanitarian. Schweitzer won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1953 for founding the Lambarene Hospital in Gabon, west central Africa David Blum made a number of recordings, including works by Mozart and Telemann and a series of Haydn symphonies for the Vanguard label, with the Esterhazy Orchestra of New York, which he founded in 1961 and directed until 1969. He was music director of the Lausanne Symphony Orchestra in Switzerland from 1973 to 1982 and of the Geneva Symphony Orchestra, which he also founded, from 1977 to 1986, and conducted many other orchestras as a guest. Mr. Blum devoted his later years to writing, showing a particular fascination with musical performers and their approaches to their art. In addition to three books -- ''Casals and the Art of Interpretation,'' ''The Art of Quartet Playing: The Guarneri Quartet in Conversation With David Blum'' and ''Paul Tortelier'' -- he wrote articles for The New Yorker, The Musical Times, The Strad and the Arts and Leisure section of The New York Times.

Thulathia Solo [Cello Version]. Autograph musical manuscript

"Conceived in 1954, Thulathia was composed in 1960 and first performed at the Brookline Public Library in Brookline, Massachusetts. "Thulathia" means " a cello unification of three into one," i.e., "a trio in one." Grape clusters of the vine connect the energy. The concept is extended to include a cluster of grapes in a united grape vine. Instructions for playing the grapes is explained at the bottom of page 3." Notes provided by Halim El-Dabh. An Egyptian-born American composer, performer, ethnomusicologist, and educator, El-Dabh came to the United States in 1950, becoming a part of the New York music scene that included Cage, Varèse, and Hovhaness. He went on to study composition with Krenek, Copland, Dallapiccola, and others. "El-Dabh's compositional style is influenced by Egyptian folk and traditional music. Frequently monodic, his works feature complex rhythms and much use of percussion. His career was launched in 1949 with a highly acclaimed performance of It is Dark and Damp on the Front (1948) at All Saints Cathedral, Cairo. In 1950 he made his début as a solo drummer, under the direction of Stokowski, in the first performance of Tahmeela. Other works include Clytemnestra (1958), One More Gaudy Night (1961), A Look at Lightning (1962) and Lucifer (1975), commissioned by Martha Graham; Sound and Light of the Pyramids of Giza (1960), written for the Cultural Ministry of the Egyptian Government and performed daily at the pyramids; and New Pharaoh's Suite, written for the Cleveland Museum of Art to accompany a visiting Ethiopian exhibit from the Louvre (1996). Spectrum no.1 ?Symphonies in Sonic Vibration' (1955) and Leiyla and the Poet (1959) have been recorded." Denise A Seachrist in Grove Music Online. An early pioneer of electronic music, El-Dabh composed one of the earliest known works of tape music, or "musique concrète," in 1944, The Expression of Zaar. He also scored four ballets for Martha Graham: Clytemnestra (1958), One More Gaudy Night (1961), A Look at Lightning (1962), and Lucifer (1975). "El-Dabh is probably the best known composer of Arabic descent and his works are highly regarded in Egypt, where he is considered the foremost living composer among that nations's 'second generation' of contemporary composers." Wikipedia.. 6 ff., notated in black ink on 12-stave Cameo Music Papers No. 5-3124, rectos only. Folio. Signed at the foot of each page and dated "Cairo 1960" on first and last pages. With copyright notices to foot of page 1: "2016 by Halim El-Dabh Music LLC," signed, and "1960 by C.F. Peters Corp 373 Park Ave. South New York, N.Y. 10016" A fair copy, including autograph note to page 3: "In whichever order, try to include as many notes within the time limits, including some in chords if so desired. Start and end with one of the heavy shaded notes." Slightly worn and creased; light red stain to upper left margin of pages 1 and 5.

Rare early edition (one of perhaps four or five early editions with the main text set in a roman type) of two works written ca. 1300 by an unidentified follower of Albertus Magnus concerning the extraordinary properties (magical, astrological, medicinal, etc.) of 16 plants, 45 minerals or gems and 18 animals (including many birds), and concerning the "wonders of the world". The first includes means to become invisible, feel no pain, arouse love, interpret dreams and make prophesies. The second includes mental manipulation of matter, cures for diseases, magic made with fire or light, means of breaking charms, and seeing the future in dreams. The woodcut is remarkable for its depiction of both numerous books with bosses, clasps, etc., and numerous accoutrements, such as a wedge-shaped book stand, a copy stand in the form of a four-sided pyramid on a pedestal, pens, ink wells and penknives. Senna used it again in 1504 on the title-page of John Pecham's Perspectiva communis. Though this edition, like many others, attributes the works to Albertus Magnus (ca. 1194?-1280) on the title-page and at the end of the texts, the attribution is believed to be spurious. An attribution to his follower Henry of Saxony (d. ca. 1378) has also been challenged. With a faded inscription in red ink below the colophon, in a 16th-century italic hand. With the engraved armorial bookplate of James, Earl of Southesk, on the front pastedown. With a short worm trail at the head of the last 2 leaves, and a small marginal chip (repaired) and tear, neither approaching the text, but otherwise in very good condition. The binding shows some small minor blemishes and its spine is slightly faded, but it is otherwise fine. A rare early edition of a popular book of botanical, mineral and zoological wonders.

Kingdom of Earth with Hard Candy

1954 - WILLIAMS, Tennessee. The Kingdom of Earth with Hard Candy. A Book of Stories. Hartford, [New York]: New Directions, (1954). Tall octavo, original half brown cloth, original slipcase. $3200.Signed limited edition, published the same year as the first edition and including the story "The Kingdom of Earth," not included in the trade edition, number 17 of only 100 numbered copies (out of a total of approximately 135), signed on the copyright page by Tennessee Williams. One of four collections of short fiction by Tennessee Williams. At the time the first edition of Hard Candy was published, Tennessee Williams wanted to include Kingdom of Earth, a story about "relations among a dying transvestite, his sluttish bride, and his brother" (Hart, 831). However, his publisher, fearing an obscenity-based backlash, encouraged him to accept a compromise. Eventually Williams agreed to publish the first edition of this collection without Kingdom of Earth, but demanded that a special signed limited edition including the story be published that same year. Thus, this signed limited edition uses the original sheets from the first edition of Hard Candy, but bears a cancel title page with a signed limitation statement on the verso and contains Kingdom of Earth at the end. While the limitation page claims that 100 copies of this work were published, that number is believed to refer to the number of copies intended for Williams' own private distribution, of which this copy is number 17. Approximately 35 additional copies, some signed, were published for the use of the publisher, but those are all believed to contain various non-numeric notations on the limitation page. Most of the original 100 copies were later destroyed, making this the rarest of Williams' works. Crandell A13.I.b. Owner signature in yellow felt pen.Text fresh with only tiny bit of spotting to one leaf (227-8), expert repair to inner paper hinges, faintest edge-wear to boards; expert archival repair to slipcase. A highly desirable extremely good copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        A Fable

New York: Random House, 1954. Signed limited first edition of the first novel to win both Pulitzer and National Book Award winner. Octavo, original cloth. One of a thousand signed numbered copies. Fine in the original glassine wrapper. Slipcase is in fine condition. A superior example, not often seen in this condition. The Fable won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in 1955. An allegorical story of World War I, set in the trenches in France and dealing ostensibly with a mutiny in a French regiment, it was originally considered a sharp departure for Faulkner. Recently it has come to be recognized as one of his major works and an essential part of the Faulkner oeuvre. Faulkner himself fought in the war, and his descriptions of it "rise to magnificence," according to The New York Times, and include, in Malcolm Cowley's words, "some of the most powerful scenes he ever conceived." Zschokke - Prophetenspiegel

Buch 1954. Original! - Kein Nachdruck! - Keine Kopie! Versand D: 5,00 EUR
