University of Oregon 1954-57, [Eugene] - Four volumes: Kesey's college yearbooks for his four years at the University of Oregon, where he would later teach a graduate writing course, and where his archive resides. In Oregana '54, Kesey is pictured as a member of Stizer Hall, as a member of the freshman wrestling team, and at the WRA Festival. Rubbing to the edges; very good. Oregana '55 pictures Kesey as a member of Skull and Dagger, in the shadows of a stage production, and as a member of Beta Theta Pi. Some foxing and mustiness; very good. In Oregana '56, Kesey is pictured as a member of the Druids (an organization of the most outstanding men in the junior class); a member of the Order of the O (charged with enforcing campus traditions); a columnist for the Oregon Daily Emerald; a cast member of Macbeth; a member of Beta Theta Pi (a mark on this page reverses the names of two rows of men); and a member of the wrestling team. Minor foxing to covers; near fine. Lastly, his senior yearbook (Oregana '57), shows Kesey as a member of the wrestling team and as a narrator in a "Vodvil" skit. It's uncommon to encounter a complete set of these yearbooks; we've had such a set only once before. A few stains to rear endpages, some rubbing to covers; overall very good. Dar es Salaam (Tanzania) 1954 - Colour off-set print (Very Good, some very light wear along original folds, some areas of toning but overall a great example), 93 x 71 cm (36.5 x 28 inches). This excellent, large-format, separately-issued map is the first comprehensive and scientific geological map of British East Africa (today comprising the modern nations of Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda), predating the first such maps that were made depicting the region’s three individual colonies. East Africa’s highly complex geology is depicted with great precision, with the ‘Geological Index’, or legend, in the lower right identifying 19 distinct geological zones by their own resplendent colour and letter symbols, in addition to the numerous fault lines which traverse the area. East Africa is one of the world’s most geologically ancient, diverse and rugged lands, and the present map is the result of many years of painstaking surveys and scientific observations. In addition, all major cities, towns, roads and railways are depicted in a light green hue, along with political divisions and the names of the various provinces of Uganda, Kenya and Tanganyika (mainland Tanzania). The map was produced as the result of a great conference of the region’s geologists in 1952, which provided the first complete and accurate general picture of the geology of East Africa, with the map being published in Dar es Salaam not long thereafter. Historical Background: The Early Geological Mapping of East Africa The interior of East Africa was one of the last regions of the world to be explored, let along colonized by Europeans. While the coastal areas were opened to European trade since the end of the 15th Century, the interior was a virtual enigma until the 1840s, when Westerners began to head inland. However, it would not be until the 1880s that they possessed a good idea of the region’s general geography, from the coasts of the Indian Ocean through to the Great Lakes of Africa. In 1885, at the Berlin Conference, the European powers divided up between themselves the as yet colonized regions of Africa. Germany clamed Tanganyika (the mainland portion of modern Tanzania), which became Deutsch-Ostafrika in 1891. The British made the island sultanate of Zanzibar a protectorate in 1890; in 1894 they made Uganda a colony, and the following year what was later known as Kenya became the British East Africa protectorate. The geological mapping of East Africa was somewhat arrested by the fact that the region was not seen to be especially rich in precious minerals, in sharp contrast to South Africa, which possessed the world’s largest deposits of gold, platinum and diamonds (and which was geologically mapped much earlier). Consequently, the geological mapping lacked the heavy funding and sense of urgency motivated by commercial interests, and was carried out a more leisurely pace, following administrative obligations and intellectual curiosity. That being said, the German geologist Alexander Sadebeck published a geological map of East Africa, dated 1872, but this was based on fragmentary information, made at a time when not even the basic topography of the region was understood. This was followed up by Gustav A. Fisher’s more sophisticated mapping of the geology of the rifts grabens in what is today southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, which was published in 1884. Following that, John Walter Gregory published a geological sketch map of the southern part of British East Africa and the northern part of German East Africa as part of his classic work The Great Rift Valley (1896), which while an impressive effort, identifying the basic geological zones, was far from scientific or precise. Beyond that, geologists concentrated their efforts on episodic projects dealing with specific areas, such as academic studies of local sites, and geological reconnaissance relating to mines and the construction of railroads. World War I disrupted and delayed any notions of conducting systematic scientific geological surveys of

The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, 1954 US 6th Impression with Dustjacket and Custom Leather Slipcase

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1954. 2nd Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good Plus/Very Good Plus. J.R.R. Tolkien. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again, by J.R.R. Tolkien. A very scarce copy of an early printing of the US Edition. The 1954 Houghton Mifflin Edition, 6th overall printing, or the 2nd printing of the 2nd Edition (1951). A Very Good Plus copy in a Very Good Plus condition original dustjacket designed by Tolkien, as found on the original UK Editions. Stated 6th printing on front flap, dustjacket is priced clipped, title page verso notes as "Printed in Great Britain", without any printing history. This is the only jacket that states "In Preparation" above "The Lord of the Rings" on the back flap. Only the 2nd printings of the 2nd edition have this notation. One of only 1000 imported from Allen & Unwin, lacking the printing history on title verso, to help them circumvent the import restrictions and US copyright laws. The text block is clean and bright, a few spots of foxing to the preliminary pages, does not affect the color frontispiece or title page, bound in the teal colored original cloth from the publisher. Shows very little shelf wear, slight rubbing at the folds, no soiling to note, the spine is darkened, but the corners are unbumped. Features the title, dwarves hat, author, and publisher stamped on the spine in blue. Front boards have "The Hobbit" stamped in blue as well. Contains the full color frontispiece "The Hill: Hobbiton-across-the Water", as well as the original line drawings by Tolkien. The maps are in excellent condition, red and black ink, still show clear and bright against the unfoxed endpapers. No previous owners name or writing. The dustjacket shows a bit of loss to the spine fold corners, while the flap folds show only the most minor rubbing and slight color loss. A couple minor closed tears along the edges. The only other fault would be a bit of soiling and darkening to the light colored areas, with the spine tanned a bit more. A wonderful copy, scarce in its original dustjacket in this lovely condition. A full leather custom slipcase to house this lovely edition is provided, featuring the Mountains and Dragon design as found on the UK cover, to protect and show this classic of fantasy literature. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus.

        Cuneiform Tablet

Ur III Period, Sixth Year of Shu-Sin, 2037-2029 BC - Provenance: circa 1954 in the Howell Bible Collection of the Pacific School of Religion, deaccessioned in 2013. Upper third of a small clay tablet (400mm x 23mm at its widest point) inscribed in Sumerian cuniform of the late third millenium BC. An administrive text concerned with livestock and measures of beer needed as offerings for the local cult. It most likely comes from the ancient city of Umma, in what is now southern Iraq. Translation: 'One. | offering/sacrifice for. | four beer. | four (?) oxen. | Delivered by. | From Ur-Mes | Seal of the Ruler | Year in which the Exalted Stela was made'. The scribe has noted that the document was sealed with the cylinder of the local ruler. The obverse of the tablet shows many traces of the impressions left by multiple rollings of this seal. An example of early writing, more than 4000 years old and unusually with both a pre 1970s provenace and a translation.

Signed Photograph in NY, replacing the recently deceased Furtwangler

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An original 8 x 10 photograph of the great conductor, signed and inscribed to the impresario and Columbia Artists manager André Mertens and dated New York, Nov 16, 1954. Karajan has inscribed: "To my 'promoter' in America - with many thanks and deep attachment. Herbert von Karajan." Signed photographs of this size from Karajan are uncommon from this period. Two slight tears at the lower right edge, one thumbtack hole; otherwise in fine condition. 8 x 10 inches (20.3 x 25.3 cm). An historic example!
When Karajan conducted the Berlin Philharmonic on September 23, 1954, he did not know that Wilhelm Furtwängler's performance three days earlier would be his last with the orchestra. Upon Furtwängler's death on November 30, the orchestra's planned tour of the United States was in jeopardy. André Mertens stepped in to facilitate Karajan taking over as the conductor, making it possible for the tour to continue as planned in early 1955. Karajan then became the permanent director of the orchestra.
The important musical manager André Mertens began his career as the directory of the State Ministry of Fine Arts in Germany, before fleeing to the USA in 1933. There he became the founder of Columbia Artists Management and played an important role in developing the careers of artists such as Leontyne Price and Renata Tebaldi. In the post-war years, he also served as a link between the musical worlds of the USA and Europe, facilitating American tours for European orchestras under Karajan, Walter, Bernstein, and others, and recommending young American artists for European opera houses. After his death in 1963, his work was continued by his wife Clara, who also made several generous institutional bequests in his name, including the André Mertens Galleries for Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

No additional printings, mentioned. The inscription on the front free endpaper reads, simply, "Greetings from Helen & Scott Nearing", with the word "Helen" being in Helen's distinctly different hand, and Scott finishing. Lacks slipcase.Below the Nearing's inscription, the book was rededicated -- judging by this inscription -- apparently by residents of Harborside, Maine) sometime after completing their Vermont experiment. The inscription is "from all 4 Eberharts" and is quite likely from the family of famed American poet Richard Eberhart who summered in Harborside, Maine, where the Nearings also lived (and published this book) The rest of this probable association copy inscription reads, in its entirety, "For _______ and ________ from all 4 Eberharts to remind them to come back to the Cape where Scott Nearing's vegetables grow!"
