Live and Let Die (a James Bond novel).

London: Jonathan Cape, 1954.. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards, embossed in gilt, with purple dust-wrapper showing the original price of 10/6 to both flaps. A striking example of the the variant with the correct 'author's skill' text and the small section of purple colour which has crept onto the front flap, as described in the bibliography, page 61. A lightly used copy with one or two minor nicks to jacket, nice clean page edges, no inscriptions. Superior condition. ...Beautiful, fortune-telling Solitaire is the prisoner (and tool) of Mr. Big - master of fear, artist in crime, and Voodoo Baron of Death. James Bond has no time for superstition - he knows that Big is also a top SMERSH operative and a real threat. More than that, after tracking him through the jazz joints of Harlem to the Everglades and on the Caribbean, 007 has realized that Mr. Big is one of the most dangerous men he has ever faced, and nobody, not even the enigmatic Solitaire, can be sure how their battle of wills is going to end.

Liber secretorum . De virtutibus herbarum: & animalium quorundam. Eiusdemq[ue] liber De mirabilibus mundi: & etiam de quibusdam effectibus causatis a quibusdam animalibus &c.(Colophon: Venice, Johan Baptist Sessa, 12 February 1502). Small 4to (21 x 15.5 cm). With a large woodcut portrait of the author at his desk. Gold-tooled maroon morocco (ca. 1870/90?) for James Carnegie, 9th Earl of Southesk (1827-1905), gilt edges.

      - Earl of Southesk sale, Sotheby, 18 October 1954, 255 (this copy); EDIT16 CNCE 29555 (2 copies); Honeyman 51 (this copy); KVK & WorldCat (5 copies). Rare early edition (one of perhaps four or five early editions with the main text set in a roman type) of two works written ca. 1300 by an unidentified follower of Albertus Magnus concerning the extraordinary properties (magical, astrological, medicinal, etc.) of 16 plants, 45 minerals or gems and 18 animals (including many birds), and concerning the "wonders of the world". The first includes means to become invisible, feel no pain, arouse love, interpret dreams and make prophesies. The second includes mental manipulation of matter, cures for diseases, magic made with fire or light, means of breaking charms, and seeing the future in dreams. The woodcut is remarkable for its depiction of both numerous books with bosses, clasps, etc., and numerous accoutrements, such as a wedge-shaped book stand, a copy stand in the form of a four-sided pyramid on a pedestal, pens, ink wells and penknives. Senna used it again in 1504 on the title-page of John Pecham's Perspectiva communis. Though this edition, like many others, attributes the works to Albertus Magnus (ca. 1194?-1280) on the title-page and at the end of the texts, the attribution is believed to be spurious. An attribution to his follower Henry of Saxony (d. ca. 1378) has also been challenged. With a faded inscription in red ink below the colophon, in a 16th-century italic hand. With the engraved armorial bookplate of James, Earl of Southesk, on the front pastedown. With a short worm trail at the head of the last 2 leaves, and a small marginal chip (repaired) and tear, neither approaching the text, but otherwise in very good condition. The binding shows some small minor blemishes and its spine is slightly faded, but it is otherwise fine. A rare early edition of a popular book of botanical, mineral and zoological wonders.

        A Fable

New York: Random House, 1954. Signed limited first edition of the first novel to win both Pulitzer and National Book Award winner. Octavo, original cloth. One of a thousand signed numbered copies. Fine in the original glassine wrapper. Slipcase is in fine condition. A superior example, not often seen in this condition. The Fable won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in 1955. An allegorical story of World War I, set in the trenches in France and dealing ostensibly with a mutiny in a French regiment, it was originally considered a sharp departure for Faulkner. Recently it has come to be recognized as one of his major works and an essential part of the Faulkner oeuvre. Faulkner himself fought in the war, and his descriptions of it "rise to magnificence," according to The New York Times, and include, in Malcolm Cowley's words, "some of the most powerful scenes he ever conceived." Zschokke - Prophetenspiegel

Buch 1954. Typed Letter Signed, Discussing Detective Fiction

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. TLS from the British-American novelist and screenwriter known for his influential hard-boiled detective fiction, including The Big Sleep and Farewell, My Lovely. 1 page. Dated January 18, 1954. Three paragraphs in which he discusses copies of books he has that may be of interest to the recipient, presumably a collector, and his own interest in a book called They Don't Dance Much by James Ross. Several sentences discount the idea that James Ross is John Ross Macdonald, and Chandler closes: "But if I could recreate that strange sordid steamy lazy corrupt ingrown, and yet so human feeling of shabby life below the line, I shouldn't have stopped with one book, by heck." He signs, "Yours ever, Raymond Chandler." Folded vertically and horizontally for mailing; otherwise in fine condition. With three tiny holograph corrections.

Chandler, together with Dashiell Hammett, was the father of the hard-boiled mystery genre, and a letter in which he discusses other hard-boiled writing is especially attractive.

...D'entre les morts [Vertigo] (First Edition)

Paris: Denoël, 1954. First French Edition, preceding all others. The French crime fiction duo's third novel, preceding the British edition by two years and the American by three. Basis for the iconic 1958 film noir "Vertigo" directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring James Stewart, Kim Novak, and Barbara Bel Geddes. Not only is "Vertigo"' widely recognized as Hitchcock's masterpiece, it recently trumped "Citizen Kane" in "Sight and Sounds" definitive, once-a-decade poll as the greatest film ever made. A title that is rarely offered in commerce, and, for such an important film source book, surprisingly underrepresented in library holdings, with OCLC locating just four in American institutions. An attractive copy of a fragile volume and cornerstone film source title. Near Fine in photo illustrated wrappers, a paperback original. Light rubbing to the wrappers and extremities, a few vertical hairline creases along the spine, with a small, partial ink stamp to the top edge of the text block, else Fine and clean throughout. In a custom quarter-leather clamshell box.

A taut Western in the revenge-drama genre about a cowboy accused of murder who hides out in the desert before going back to clear his name. A Fable.

Faulkner himself fought in the war, and his descriptions of it "rise to magnificence," according to The New York Times, and include, in Malcolm Cowley's words, "some of the most powerful scenes he ever conceived." A3 / 12.19.54," with the photographer's inkstamp on verso and manuscript note "Copyright 1954." A superb photograph from the so-called "Torn Sweater Series," shot by Roy Schatt on 29 December 1954 at the request of Life magazine. This is the image from the shoot that was used as a backdrop for the stage revue Grease, on six- and twelve-sheets outside of theatres.

Autograph letter signed. No place, 14. X. 1954.

1954. 4to. 1 p. To an unnamed recipient about the use of enjambment in verse texts: "Mon cher ami, Cet enjambement tombe sous le sens et je l'employais jadis à l'époque de 'Secret Professional'. Je ne savais pas que vous l'avez employé et je vous en félicite [...]. (Je l'ai employé aussi une ou deux fois dans le chapitre 7 [...]).[...] Melle [?] (qui est à la radio) a eu la palme comme de juste. Je n'y étais pour rien. Les roues de la radio et de la télévision sont étranges. On va annoncer le chaos, décision prise. Votre fidèle Jean Cocteau".

Blake’s Illustrations of Dante. Plate 1: “The Circle of the Lustful: Paolo and Francesca”

US: 1954 Large folio, fine, clear uniform impression on hand-made paper with no watermark, inscribed in pencil by Lessing Rosenwald (see below). The best of the Dante series plates, often called the “Whirlwind of lovers”. This impression from the original plate was printed for Lessing Rosenwald in 1953/4 (this impression is dated 6/14/1954). No number is given though Keynes (Blake Studies) suggested 20 sets plus three extra prints of plate 1; the later (1968) printing of restrikes for the Trianon Press edition was limited to 25 sets. Essick notes (see below) that “In 1953-55, Rosenwald had sets printed on heavy, dead-white wove paper with a surprisingly bold, pebble-grain surface. The plates had to be printed with considerable pressure in order to smooth the paper sufficiently to register fine lines. In a complete suite of these restrikes in the Huntington Library, San Marino, California, each sheet measures 35.5 50.5 cm. and is inscribed in pencil, lower right, “Impression taken from the copper plate in my collection 1953-4[.] Lessing J Rosenwald 4/19/55.” and records watermarks on some sheets Bentley, Blake Books, 448D. Bindman, Complete Graphic Works of Blake, 647–653. Essick, “The Printings of William Blake’s Dante Engravings,” Blake: An Illustrated Quarterly, Fall 1990.
