Watson, James Dewey with Francis Crick, MHF Wilkins, Rosalind Franklin, RG Gosling
London: Nature 1953. First Edition. Volume 171: [2], 1168, iii-lxiv pages. Volume 172: [2], 1200, iii-lxxi, [1-ads] pages. Together, January 3, 1953 through December 26, 1953 issues (1953 complete).Matching blue buckram bindings, ex-library and ex-libris corporate library with occasional stamps, library pocket, and usual library markings. Original issue covers not bound in as often the case. Cloth. We offer BOTH volumes 171 and 172 of Nature, A Weekly Journal of Science, containing the foundational papers announcing the Discovery of the Molecular Structure of DNA. Together, these volumes highlight the beginning of what we now know as molecular biology. 100 Books Famous in Medicine (Norman/Grolier) notes: 'Forty years after Watson and Crick's discovery, so much of the basic understanding of medicine and disease has advanced to the molecular level that their paper [see #1 below] may be considered the most significant single contribution to biology and medicine in the twentieth century' (pages 361-362).Volume 171 lays out the structure of DNA. Volume 172 further confirms the theory with experimental work, and starts to build a connection to protein synthesis which in retrospect was the link which catapulted the discovery of DNA into a useful and actionable research direction. Many of today's useful inventions spring from this linkage, which really gained traction in the 10 years following the initial discovery (see Quiet debut for the double helix by Robert Olby, Nature, Vol 421, Jan 23 2003 for a nice treatment of this idea). First edition. Hardcover. A fascinating collection of materials relating to the discovery of the structure of DNA, headed by the rare three-paper offprint which "records the discovery of the molecular structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), the main component of chromosomes and the material that transfers genetic characteristics in all life forms. Publication of this paper initiated the science of molecular biology. Forty years after Watson and Crick's discovery, so much of the basic understanding of medicine and disease has advanced to the molecular level that their paper may be considered the most significant single contribution to biology and medicine in the twentieth century" (<em>One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine</em>, p. 362). The double helix describing the molecular structure of DNA has not only reshaped biology, it has become a cultural icon, represented in sculpture, visual art, jewellery, and toys. In 1962, Watson, Crick, and Wilkins shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material."</p> <p><em>Provenance</em>: Stephen Neidle, CRC Biomolecular Group, King's College, London. Nasser, Gamal Abdel, President of Egypt (1918-1970).
Cairo, 24. VIII. 1953. 4to. 1 page. To Neel Goldblatt of Goldblatt Brothers Inc. in Chicago: "With pleasure, I received your letter and with pleasure I send you back the stamps with my signature on each although I never think of myself as a great person in this world. The only truth in my person is that I am fighting with all my patriots to live as free people in a free country in the free democratic world. We Egyptians believe that this is a very justified demand. Unfortunately the Britishers do not agree with us and wish we live as slaves under their domination. Our fight, now, is to force the British to understand our case and evacuate the Canal zone and thus gain our friendship instead of our hatere[d]. To realize our aim, we are ready to sacrifice our lives. This is one side of a small picture of myself and you can find, Dear Sir, that there is no greatness in it but there is truth, faith and hope [.]". - Signed as General Secretary on a letterhead printed in Arabic. The addressee was a Polish-American-Jewish collector and member of the Goldblatt family that owned Goldblatt Bros. department stores in the Midwest headquartered in Cicago. A typed English heading states that our letter was written in Cairo's "Liberation Rally / Republic Square", Tahrir Square, also the center of the demonstrations of the 2011 Egyptian Revolution, a critical part of the Arab spring. Hans-Martin Gutmann
Autorenportrait:Dr. theol. Hans-Martin Gutmann, geboren 1953, ist Professor für Praktische Theologie mit dem Schwerpunkt Homiletik an der Universität Hamburg.

Ink inscription on front free endpaper. A colourful original painting on a front free endpaper. Allen, a businessman, philosopher, adventurer, energetic historian and linguist, created a private library considered the finest private collection of books on Georgia and the Caucasus in the Western world. Throughout his life he travelled extensively in remote places and may be the only person to have walked the entire length of the Turkish-Russian border. His co-author, a clever Russian emigré, was an essayist, cultural historian, novelist and playwright, yet cited in Clive James' Cultural Amnesia as a prime example of "just how brilliant somebody can be and still be a forgotten man." Their work was described on publication as "the most complete and authoritative study of this subject available in the English language" (Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies) and is now considered a classic.
