J.R.R. Tolkien
John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1953) 'The Fellowship of the Ring - Being the First Part of the Lord of the Rings', UK uncorrected proof copy, published by George Allen & Unwin. Condition: very good with some creases to the front and rear brown wrappers as shown. The first few pages have a diagonal crease to the top corner. Clean throughout with pencil pagination correction to pages 16 and 21. Top right of the brown wrapper shows "Not less than 21/- / nor more than 25/-" in pencil - this has been written on all proof copies by the publisher. Typed slip with title and author's name on front wrap, done by the publisher. A pencil annotation on the half-title explains that the proof preceeds the first edition. Dated September 1953, the uncorrected proof predates the publication of the first edition by almost a year (the first impression was published in July 1954). The uncorrected proof also differs from the first edition as it not only features several errors that were later corrected, but also it does not contain Tolkien's illustrations which were later added. It is not known with absolute certainty how many 'Fellowship' proof copies were printed and bound by Jarrold. Some have assumed that 35 would be the most likely figure as this was the quantity recorded for the proof of 'The Two Towers' and of 'The Return of the King', the second and third volumes in the 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy respectively. Hammond and Scull, in contrast, note that 'a good guess' would be between 20 and 24 copies. How many copies have survived the passage of time is a totally different matter, and we can … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gorey Edward
New York [and] Boston: Duell, Sloan and Pearce: Little, Brown and Company, [1953]. FIRST EDITION AND PRINTING OF GOREY'S FIRST PUBLISHED BOOK. Illustrated on the recto of every page by Edward Gorey, these are the illustrations that introduced the literary world to the whimsically macabre mind of Edward Gorey. The text is printed on the versos. Small 8vo, publisher's original decorated boards featuring colour artwork by Gorey, and in the matching original dustjacket. Unpaginated. An exceptional copy, we know of no finer copy available. The book and jacket are as fresh as could be hoped for, the slight evidence of shelving at the bottom edge being truly trivial. A book rarely found in such fine condition. THE FIRST EDITION OF EDWARD GOREY'S FIRST BOOK, SCARCE IN ANY STATE AND RARE IN SUCH FINE CONDITION. This bizarre little book launched the career of one of America's most unique and unusual book artists. Gorey's fun yet macabre style, of both writing and drawing, has won him legions of fans all around the world. This is where it all began and this is a wonderful copy.

[INCUNABLE - GERMANY].
Cf. BMC II, 572; Goff S-741; Hain 15036; Hubay, Inc. Universitätsbibl. Würzburg, 1953; ISTC is00741000. Interesting example of the study of early printing in 19th-century England. The 12 leaves come from the library of the 19th-century collector Dr C. Inglis, whose father boasted an impressive collection of early printed books. Inglis believed that the leaves came from an unknown work titled De vita et honestate clericorum ex consilio Moguntinum, printed in 1453 by Gerhardus Episcopus. Tipped in is a letter to Inglis by the well-known bibliographer William Blades discussing this matter. Although the text opens with "De Vita et honestate clericorum ex consilio Maguntinensis Gerhardi Archiepiscipi", it was in fact part of Statuta synodalia herbipolensia, printed at Würzburg by Georg Reyser in ca. 1486. The first 6 leaves are [2]-[d]7 and the final 6 leaves are quire [g].With owner's inscription of Sir Edward Coates, bookplate with initials "CC" (Clifford Coates), the bookplate of Dr. C. Inglis, and some annotations on front pastedown; an autograph letter signed by Wiliam Blades to C. Inglis tipped to flyleaf. 12 well-preserved leaves.

Kirk, Russell
Chicago: Henry Regnery Company, 1953. First edition of one of the greatest contributions to twentieth-century American Conservatism. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Russell Kirk on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Rare and desirable signed by Russell Kirk. Russell Kirk's The Conservative Mind is one of the greatest contributions to twentieth-century American conservatism. Brilliant in every respect, from its conception to its choice of significant figures representing the history of intellectual conservatism, The Conservative Mind launched the modern American Conservative Movement when it was first published in 1953 and has become an enduring classic of political thought. "It is inconceivable even to imagine, let alone hope for, a dominant conservative movement in America without Kirk's labor" (William F. Buckley, Jr.). It was named one on the 100 best non-fiction books of the twentieth century by National Review magazine.

Macrae Smith Company, 1953. Very Good. Guy Fry's dustjacket art, double-page title page illustration, and 22 (of 23) in text illustrations. Lacking just one vignette, else the complete original artwork for this anthology of original plays for children. The color cover drawing is on artist's board measuring 12.75 x 15", the black and white drawing for the double-page title is on artists board measuring 17" x 13", and the 22 black and white line drawings are on thick textured paper ranging in size from 5" x 4" to 5.5" x 9" (including a few backed on linen cloth, now detached.) A few small penciled measurements and production notes, most of the interior illustrations have handwritten titles in ink or pencil on the top margins. Scattered light and smooth glue stains at the corners and on the backs of some illustrations, very good. A pleasing archive of Guy Fry's gay and delightful drawings illustrating the various plays specially written for children to be performed on holidays and other important celebrations.
