        Fahrenheit 451 (Asbestos Binding)

New York: Ballantine Books, Inc, 1953. First edition. Near Fine. A Fine copy of the author's masterpiece, in the rare asbestos binding. One of approximately 200 copies (although a letter from Bradbury suggests the number was closer to 215), this copy number 93. In Very Good+ to Near Fine condition with a hairline crack at the lower front joint (running about an inch), slight bumps to corners, but a clean, unread copy. (And a quick note about the crack: we have opted not to repair the binding, but the repair could easily be done and we would be happy to send to our bindery, at our expense, should the prospective purchaser wish.) Bradbury's most famous work, about a dystopian future where books are banned - and burned. "Fahrenheit 451" appears on the New York Public Library's list of books of the century and won the 1954 American Academy of Letters Award in Arts and Literature. Though the book is thought to be a comment on the political culture and McCarthyism at the time of its publication, the work also grew out of a number of ideas and themes Bradbury had explored in a few of his earlier published short stories. The book would later be adapted into a 1966 film directed by Francois Truffaut, which was nominated for the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. In a contemporary review in The Chicago Sunday Tribune, writer August Derleth called the book "a savage and shockingly prophetic view of one possible future way of life...compelling.". Near Fine.

Kiss Me Kate: A Musical Play

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1953 - First edition. Unopened, spine a bit toned, the paper covered boards a little rubbed, very good without dustwrapper. Warmly Inscribed by Sam Spewack and Signed by both he and Bella Spewack. A popular musical play based on The Taming of the Shrew, basis for a number of films and television movies, originally directed by George Sidney in 1953 with Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel, Ann Miller, Keenan Wynn, and Bob Fosse. Made just as Hollywood was trying to give television audiences a reason to return to theaters, it is reportedly the only film shot simultaneously in 3D, widescreen, and full frame versions, and consequently suffers a bit from performers repeatedly lunging themselves at the camera. Also of note is the 1968 television version directed by Paul Bogart with Robert Goulet and Carol Lawrence. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Album of Photographs Taken in the British Controlled Suez Canal Zone, During the Period of Heightened Tenuous Relations Between Egypt and Britain

Ismailia, Tel-el-Kebir, Suez Canal, Egypt, 1953-54, 1953. Album of photographs taken in the British controlled Suez Canal Zone during the period of heightened tenuous relations between Egypt and Britain which culminated in the Suez Crisis, by Lieutenant Barry A. Biemans of the Royal Fusiliers, East Surrey Regiment (Army identification number 295115), during his foreign service with the Middle East Land Forces (M.E.L.F.). Contains over 200 gelatin silver print photographs with highly detailed manuscript captions, plus a few military documents, maps of the region, and ephemeral momentos, mounted onto black cardstock leaves. Photographs vary in size, the majority measuring approximately 5 x 5 cm, some slightly larger, and the two largest measuring 18 x 13,5 cm. Oblong 8vo. black cloth album, each measuring approximately 30 x 24 x 3 cm, Significant wear and fading to boards, otherwise in Very Good Condition internally, with captivating photographs and a brief narration through captions. Lieutenant Barry A. Biemans was sent to Egypt in mid-1953, after having previously served in Somalia, and taking a home stay leave in England. In Egypt he was assigned to the MT Section [Mechanical Transport], prepares transport vehicles for service, fetching damaged abandoned units, and repairing them. A very detailed photographic chronicle replete with manuscript commentary presents, from the firsthand perspective of a participant, the state of affairs in the British occupied Suez Canal Zone of Egypt just three years before the Suez Crisis, which ultimately caused British evacuation from the Suez region and laid the foundation for the independence of Sudan. Setting the tone for the album, and manifesting the prevalent sentiments of contention in the British controlled Suez region at the time, the soldier has kept two of his paper targets, alongside of which he explains the standard of precision expected when firing, "As the local inhabitants still persist in causing trouble, a high standard of shooting is maintained." A thorough tour of the garrison at Tel-el-Kebir follows, and then a detailed description of military vehicles, secret camouflaged storage units, and special equipment including massive searchlights mounted onto transport trucks. His captions explain, "Under these mounds of sand was stored the main supplies of High Explosive from both the Middle and Far East theatres... Every possible devise known was used to prevent Undesirable Elements from seeing views such as these... Old Ammunitions are disposed of at regular intervals in the local spot known as Happy Valley." A pivotal event is remembered in a view of the approach to Ismailia, and a photograph of "the notorious Nafisha bridge" [at Nafisha Gulf in Ismailia]. At a roadside, he ponders that he has stopped at "the exact spot where all the trouble started", referring to an attack on British shipping and facilities near Ismailia on 25 January 1952 and the subsequent battle which erupted in the centre of Ismailia later the same day between British Forces and Egyptian auxiliary police. This event gave impetus to the Cairo Fire / Black Saturday riot the following day, as well as the abdication of King Farouk. He was granted leave for 28 days beginning in January 1954, evidently spent at a military camp in Port Louis, Mauritius, a tour of which is provided in a few images. He also photographs a dredge digging in the Suez Canal, Arab dhows sailing, and the Suez Canal Defence Monument at Gebel Maryam, situated on the shore of Lake Timsah, Ismailia, and overlooking Suez Canal. Finally, indicative of peaceful times ahead, Lt. Biemans photographs of himself on an Egyptian dhow, and remarks in caption, "The first time this sort of fraternisation has been possible for four years." A memorandum dated 30 August 1954 announces his return to UK. He pays a final visit to RAF Fayid before boarding the SS Captain Hobson for the voyage home in 19 September 1954. Photographs, ephemera, and his impressions of the voyage home are followed by a reversion document which places him at the H.M. Tower of London, the Regimental Headquarters of the Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment), effective 2 October 1954. A notice for his transfer to the Regular Army Reserve is dated 13 October 1954 and effective November. In addition to the photographs, the soldier also retained the following items by which to remember his tour of duty to the Near East: one Egyptian bank note for twenty-five piastres; a large folding field map of Egypt extending from Damietta to Cairo, measuring approximately 48 x 76 cm; a map of Great Bitter Lake which is linked to the Suez Canal; a map of the environs of Ismailia; a manuscript music list from the marching band; the regiment's 1953 Christmas card; a scant few ephemeral papers pertaining to the regiment, including an approval for leave in April 1954; the memorandum from the War Office dated 8 October 1954, announcing his imminent return to the UK..         British Controlled Suez Canal Zone

Ismailia, Tel-el-Kebir, Suez Canal, Egypt, 1953-1954. Oblong 8vo. black cloth album, each measuring approximately 30 x 24 x 3 cm. His arrival was approximately one year after the military coup effected by the Egyptian nationalist 'Free Officers Movement,' led by Muhammad Neguib and future Egyptian President Gamal Abdul Nasser, which had overthrown King Farouk and had established an Egyptian republic. It was a period of unrest and tension, which is illustrated in the present album. In 1953, the British occupation of Egypt was entering its 71st year, but was limited to the Suez Canal zone. The Egyptian monarchy of King Farouk was seen by civilians as both corrupt and pro-British, with its lavish lifestyle provoking the free officers movement who lived in poverty. Its policies completed the image of the Egyptian government being a puppet-figure in the hands of the British government. The Free Officers were a group of nationalist officers in the armed forces of Egypt and Sudan, that had instigated the Egyptian Revolution of 1952. His departure from Egypt late 1954 was part of the agreed British evacuation of troops. Setting the tone for the album, and manifesting the prevalent sentiments of contention in the British controlled Suez region at the time, the soldier has kept two of his paper targets, alongside of which he explains the standard of precision expected when firing, "As the local inhabitants still persist in causing trouble, a high standard of shooting is maintained." This event gave impetus to the Cairo Fire / Black Saturday riot the following day, as well as the abdication of King Farouk. [A contemporary account of the event: The Australian Associated Press reported on 26 January 1952 than on the previous day, "More than 1,500 tank-backed British troops shot and shelled defiant Egyptian police into surrender in a bloody battle in the centre of Ismailia today. British sources said at least 20 Egyptian police and three British soldiers were killed. One British officer and one soldier, plus an undetermined number of Egyptians, were listed as wounded. British military authorities stated that the action "is in no sense an assumption of military government and has the prior knowledge and full approval of the British Government."] [During the winter of 1951-1952 nationalist police officers had begun protecting and promoting fedayeen (the Egyptian resistance) attacks on British authorities in Cairo, Alexandria, and around the Suez Canal. After repelling a particularly devastating attack on British shipping and facilities near Ismailia which resulted in the death of several British soldiers, British troops tracked the fedayeen into the city. On the morning of 25 January 1952, Brigadier Kenneth Exham, the British commander, issued a warning to Egyptian policemen in Ismaïlia, demanding that they surrender their weapons and leave the canal zone entirely. By doing so, the British aimed to get rid of the only manifestation of Egyptian governmental authority in the canal zone. They also wanted to quell the police force's support of anti-British fedayeen groups. Later that day, British troops discovered the fedayeen had retreated into the local police barracks. When the police refused to surrender the fedayeen, the British officer attempted to negotiate the surrender of the police and the fedayeen. The Ismailia Governorate refused the British request, a refusal that was reiterated by interior minister Fouad Serageddin. When their negotiator was killed in the parley by the fedayeen, the British force attacked the Egyptian police barracks in Ismailia. Some 7,000 British soldiers equipped with machine guns, tanks and armour surrounded the governorate building and its barracks, containing nearly 700 Egyptian officers and soldiers. Armed only with rifles, the Egyptians still refused to surrender their weapons. The British commander thus ordered his troops to bombard the buildings. Vastly outnumbered, the Egyptians continued to fight until they ran out of ammunition. The confrontation lasted two hours. Fifty Egyptian police officers were killed and eighty to one hundred were wounded. The rest were taken captive. Egypt erupted in fury.] "At Tel-el-Kebir [Egypt] just before the truce was signed" is the caption to summarize a group of six images, which really illustrate the uncertainty of the times, and the precautions put in place for defence. Images show an armoured Egyptian policeman on horseback supervising Egyptian labourers leaving the British garrison through barbed wire flanked narrow paths. A lookout tower oversees a compound on the banks of the Sweet Water Canal within the town. [An agreement was made in 1953 to terminate British rule in Sudan by 1956, in return for Cairo's abandoning of its claim to suzerainty over the Nile Valley region.] He was granted leave for 28 days beginning in January 1954, evidently spent at a military camp in Port Louis, Mauritius, a tour of which is provided in a few images. Biemans photographs of himself on an Egyptian dhow, and remarks in caption, "The first time this sort of fraternisation has been possible for four years." Also included is 'Courses et Elevage' Tables Genealogiques. These volumes cover the genealogical history of over 50,000 racehorses from the 18th century to the mid 20th century. Volume I is a fold-out double page directory charting the history of each stud. The 'Bobinski Tables' form the cornerstone of any thoroughbred pedigree research library. Historically, 'The Family Tables of English Thoroughbred Stock', published in German in 1885 by Herman Goos, were followed by Lowe who was only able to identified 43 families Goos had identified 61. Gooss book was republished in 1897, with 50 family charts, but now using Lowes system of numbering families, with family number 1 being the foundation mare to whom the most classic winners traced in tail-female descent. Gooss genealogical charts set the model for a number of later publications, the most significant and comprehensive being by Bobinski and Zamoyski. 'The Bobinski Tables', identified a total of 74 families tracing mares, the first 49 of which were based on Lowe and Goos, and subdivided the families alphabetically, as in "1-a," to denote various significant branches. In addition, they expanded research into female families of racehorses including Polish (P), Argentine (Ar), American (A), and Colonial (C)-Australian and New Zealand-female lines, and half-bred families (HB). The second, updated volume of the Bobinski Tables was then issued in 1963. The system of identifying female lines by Lowe family number persists to this day. The increasing sophistication of commercial pedigree databases now available to the general public, breed historians, pedigree fans, and bloodstock consultants means that anyone interested in the heritage of throughbreed horses will consider deep analysis of family numbers useful in planning matings and checking form.         Arriere-histoire du Poeme Pulverise.

Jean Hughes. 1953 - Edition limited to 120 copies, with an original colour lithograph frontispiece by Nicolas de Stael. Numbered, and signed by de Stael and Rene Char on the colophon page. The collaboration between Rene Char and Nicolas de Stael, one of the most fecund, is beautifully illustrated by this superb frontispiece portrait of the poet, printed in white inside a red circle, itself placed in a blue rectangle. Without reproducing any of his features, de Stael abstractly evokes his sitter's presence and stature. Offsetting of lithograph onto title page, otherwise a good copy. (16.6 x 12.8 cm). pp. 55, (4).         The Ascent Of Everest (Signed By Hillary)

Hodder & Stoughton 1953 1st Edition - Very Good Condition in Good Dust Jacket - Hard Cover - Hodder & Stoughton 1953 "First Edition 1953" stated on copyright page - Dust Jacket is price clipped - Light wear to top and bottom spine of dust jacket - Faint peak on cloth spine of book - The book itself shows no wear or stains or darkening - Signed "Ed Hillary" on title page - No other writing or marks in book - Binding and Hinges are Very Sound - Nice Clean Tight Copy -- This First English edition was published in 1953, The First American Edition was published in 1954 - Photos sent on request - Mylar dust jacket protector - Shipped in a sturdy box with padding - Note: I have another unsigned "First Edition" of this Hodder edition which is identical in markings and appearance as the above signed copy, but it is a slightly smaller volume. The unsigned volume is the same height as the above signed volume (9 inches), with the same dust jacket, but is a quarter of an inch thinner: 1.25 inches thick whereas the signed copy I have is 1.50 inches thick. When viewed side-by-side it is obvious that the unsigned volume is smaller. I suspect that the thinner copy is a first edition later printing which was printed on slightly thinner paper. The dust jacket of the signed copy is 20-inches long and the dust jacket on the thinner copy is one-eighth of an inch shorter - Any comments or knowledge of this variation? .
