This copy is SIGNED in full & INSCRIBED by the author in black ink on ffep: "For Clyde Beck - with the thanks and appreciation of Ray Bradbury - March 1953". An EARLY inscription, in the year of publication. The book was first reviewed in the New York Times the same month, March 1953. The recipient of the author's inscription is presumably Clyde Eugene "Jersey" Beck (1900-1988), who was a right-handed infielder in Major League Baseball for the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds from 1926 to 1931. FIRST EDITION hardcover with dustjacket. First edition stated on copyright page & 1953 appears on both title page & copyright page, with no later printing dates. Drawings & dustjacket illustrations by Joe Mugnaini. Includes 23 b&w illustrations - as frontispiece plus half-page headpieces for each of the short stories. The author's fourth book, containing 22 tales "of the extraordinary, the haunting, & the beautiful" (from inner front flap of dustjacket). Bound in original grey cloth with yellow lettering to spine, in publisher's unclipped pictorial dustjacket (with publisher's original price of $3.00 intact on inner front flap). The book itself is a remarkably very nice clean tight solid NEAR FINE copy. The dustjacket with small chip hole (0.5cm) to lower spine, mild creasing to upper edge of rear panel, spine & rear panel slightly browned, shallow splits along folds, otherwise a VERY GOOD nice clean complete & unclipped copy.         Collection of Lakehurst Naval Air Station Material

Lakehurst, New Jersey: , 1953-1981. Lakehurst, New Jersey. 1953-1981. A group of material related to the Naval Air Station Lakehurst including annuals, on-base newspapers, calendars, and guide books. Quartos annuals with dark navy boards and gilt covers for the years 1953, 1957, and 1960. These are accompanied by three consecutive issues of the base newspaper (The Airship) from 1957, two wrappered NAS Lakehurst guide books for 1966 and 1971, five comb-bound calendars of American Airship for 1976 and 1978-1981, and a second edition of Airship Operation World War II: 7 December 1941 to September 1945. Overall near fine with some light rubbing and wear. The material appears to have been collected by Stewart J. Hyland, a civilian worker on the base, who appears in each of three annuals; his ownership name appears in one as well. Also present are some scattered newspaper clippings related to Lakehurst and photocopies of articles about airships. Though Lakehurst is best known as the site of the infamous Hindenburg disaster, it has been in continuous use since its construction in 1916 and remains the largest naval aviation center in the Northeast. A detailed list is available upon request. .

        SEMI-COLON Vol. 1 Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6; Vol. II, Nos. 1, 2, 3, 4 [10 Issues, A Near-Complete Run]

New York: Tibor De Nagy Gallery, nd [ca. 1953-1956]. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. 4tos.; 8.5" x 11" approx, with one issue slightly taller than the others. Printed self-wraps, all folded sheets made to create 4 pages each. Minor wear here and there. Some toning, edgewear. Very good or better overall. Rare near-complete run, lacking only the scarce final double issue, of this "poets' newsletter" edited by Myers and published by his gallery, Tibor De Nagy. Tibor De Nagy Gallery was in many ways ground zero not just for the abstract expressionist movement but for the first generation New York School poets as well. The gallery published early books from Frank O'Hara, John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, James Schuyler, and Barbara Guest and encouraged collaborations between them and the painters the gallery represented. SEMI-COLON, which ran 12 issues (including the final double number), served as something of a semi-private mode of communication between these New York writers, not unlike the way FLOATING BEAR would a decade later. Contributors to these issues include Saul Bellow, W.H. Auden, William Jay Smith, Wallace Stevens, David Jackson (all of Vol. II., No. 2 issue), Charles Henri Ford, Barbara Guest, James Schuyler, Fairfield Porter, John Ashberry, V.R. Lang (all of Vol. 1, No. 4 issue), James Merrill, John Wieners, Kenneth Koch & Frank O'Hara. The dates of these newsletters are somewhat in dispute. All are undated. Clay and Phillips date the first issue to 1950, but Tibor De Nagy was not founded until the following year. O'Hara's and Ashbery's bibliographers both suggest "[1955?]" for Vol. 1, No. 1. Most likely correct, however, are the dates 1953-ca. 1956 provided by the inventory and catalogue of the Myers' archive (on deposit at the Smithsonian Museum of American Art) and our date follows their lead. Individual issues are scarce; only the second substantive run we've handled. [Clay & Philips p. 293].

London: Curwen Press, 1953. First. Hardcover. VG+-Near Fine/VG. 428 pp, ill. Plates with tissue guards. In spite of all the information on the web, the contents of this monumental work still appear in what - to me - is the most workable useful format.         Homemade Landscape Stereo Views of Philadelphia: Fairmount Park, Wissahickon Creek, and the surrounding areas

Philadelphia, Valley Forge, etc. 1953 - A collection of 389 homemade stereo cards each with double mounted images. Most of the cards are approximately 5" x 2.5", each holding identical black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver images that are each approximately 2.5" x 2.5". A small number, perhaps a few dozen (mostly earlier cards) are a bit smaller with cards measuring 4" x 3", with the images each 1.5" x 2.25". Additionally there are three cards each lacking one of the images, and in one case, both images are present but the card mount lacking. A modest number of images are detached or a bit loose, but mostly very nice and near fine. The majority, but not all, are captioned and/or dated. Dates range from 1934 to the latest card, dated on New Years' Day 1953 (one dated in 1930, is an an outlier or perhaps misdated). Most are between 1935-1949.A wonderful collection of almost entirely outdoor scenes centered around Fairmount Park and Wissahickon Creek, displaying a fine eye for composition. Many, perhaps a bit more than half, are of lovely and bucolic wintery scenes, including skating, cross-country skiing, a horse-drawn sleigh, winding by-ways and lanes, snow-covered trees, and many other landscapes, with multiple images of Forbidden Drive, Valley Green Inn, and the Springfield and Rex Avenue approaches. Many of the images feature individuals, most of whom are identified. A very small number (perhaps a couple of dozen) seem to be from the general vicinity of Philadelphia and its suburbs (Valley Forge, Rancocas Creek, and Princeton), along with a smattering of, we assume, vacation photos (Washington, DC; Lake George and Buffalo, New York; and Montreal, Quebec).A fascinating and unusually large collection of of early amateur stereo views.

Widely considered to be one of the cornerstone works of American drama, the play is is still powerful and resonant today. A very attractive copy of this American classic.         The Adventures of Augie March.

New York: The Viking Press,, 1953. Octavo. Original light grey and black cloth, titles to spine in orange, decoration to front cover in orange, top edge orange. With the dust jacket. Spine gently rolled, bumps to spine ends, slight rubbing to extremities, fading to top edge, a very good copy in the jacket with creasing and nicks to extremities, short closed tear to head of rear panel. First edition, first printing. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Patricia, To the best dressed, best-natured woman in New York from her admirer - and friend, Saul". MacManus started working for Viking Press in 1940, becoming the publishing house's publicity director in the early 1950s. From the late 1950s until 1965, she served as publicity director for Houghton Mifflin. Writing to Bellow in late September 1964 on the publication of Herzog, she stated, "We need yr. gifts ... May you use them in joy" and wished that "seraphim and cherubim hover over the Belasco on Tues. evening", in reference to Bellow's The Last Analysis, which opened at the Belasco Theatre on 1 October 1964.

From the late 1950s until 1965, she served as publicity director for Houghton Mifflin. Writing to Bellow in late September 1964 on the publication of Herzog, she stated, "We need yr. gifts . May you use them in joy" and wished that "seraphim and cherubim hover over the Belasco on Tues. evening", in reference to Bellow's The Last Analysis, which opened at the Belasco Theatre on 1 October 1964.
