        To Catch a Thief

London: Michael Joseph Ltd., 1953. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. To Catch a Thief is the famous thriller by David Dodge, his best known and most commercially successful published work. Alfred Hitchcock purchased the film rights before publication and turned it into the 1955 film starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly. This is a scarce British first edition, first printing, very good plus in a very good plus dust jacket. The British first edition was published in 1953, a year after its preceding U.S. counterpart, with a strikingly illustrated dust jacket. The black cloth binding is clean, tight, and square, with sharp corners and bright silver lettering, marred only by a forward lean. The contents are bright with transfer browning to the endpapers that corresponds with the dust jacket flaps. Spotting is confined to the endpapers and page edges. The sole previous ownership mark is a small Durban bookseller sticker affixed to the front pastedown. The dust jacket features an illustrated black spine and front panel and white rear panel bearing a photo of the author. Just jacket print is in black and plum. The dust jacket is unclipped, still bearing the original pricing on the front and rear flaps. Trivial chipping at the spine ends and corners are the only losses. We also note minor wear at the flap folds and to the jaw of the cat's head image on the spine. The plum spine lettering is only very slightly sunned, remaining bright and clear. the dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.

        Banquet Song

(Frederic Prokosch), Barcelona 1953 - First edition. Batik self-wrappers with printed paper label. 12mo. Fine. One of 44 copies, this copy unnumbered, and not noting which of the five issues this is. Inscribed by the author on the front fly with a Christmas greeting. A brief poem, one of the author's rare "butterfly books". Prokosch was an American novelist of remarkable promise who later fell under a cloud for manufacturing some spurious "rare first editions", which he did while experimenting with the handpress he used to manufacture the butterfly books. Additionally he reprinted some of the books between 1978-1980, but the provenance of this book, and the owner's notes that accompany the book indicate that it was obtained in the 1950s. His reputation has suffered despite the fact that his books were both a critical and popular success at the time of publication. *OCLC* locates four copies. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The War Speeches of the Rt. Hon. Winston S. Churchill

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1953. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Very good. This is the elusive U.S. first "Definitive" edition, only printing of Churchill's war speeches. During his long public life, Winston Churchill played many roles worthy of historical note - member of Parliament for more than half a century, distinguished soldier and war correspondent, author of scores of books, ardent social reformer, combative cold warrior, Nobel Prize winner. But more than anything else, it was Winston Churchill's leadership during the Second World War that made him a preeminent historical figure. Of Churchill, Edward R. Murrow said: "He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle." Between 1941 and 1946, Churchill's war speeches were published in seven individual volumes in both British and U.S. editions. In 1952, during Churchill's second premiership, the British publisher - Cassell - reissued the War Speeches as a new, "Definitive" three-volume British edition. This U.S. edition was issued in 1953. The three-volume edition of Churchill's War Speeches is considered superior to the original seven wartime volumes. New speeches are added, as is a very helpful index. Some of the original speeches considered peripheral are eliminated while others are retitled and chronological dates are replaced with brief transitional or introductory notes. There were 4,700 copies of the British first edition, first printing, but this incredibly small U.S. edition was limited to a mere 500 copies produced from British edition sheets. (Internally, only the title and copyright pages differ from the British edition.) This U.S. first edition, only printing was bound quite differently from its English counterpart and more elaborately, with a black cloth spine decorated and printed in gilt, over red cloth boards, yellow-stained top edge, and head and foot bands. The light blue and black dust jackets are illustrated with a reproduction from Churchill's hand-corrected typescript of the first Secret Session speech. Houghton Mifflin issued the three volumes in a plain navy leatherette slipcase. Here is a full U.S. three volume set in the original dust jackets and publisher's slipcase. Condition is fine in very good or better dust jackets and a good plus slipcase. The bindings are square, clean, and tight with sharp corners and no discernable wear. The contents are crisp and bright. We find no spotting or previous ownership marks. The dark yellow stained top edges retain uniform, unfaded color. The dust jackets remain bright and clean. The Volume II & III dust jackets retain the original "3 Volumes, $25.00" front flap pricing and show only trivial wear confined to corners, spine ends, and hinges with a few small chips at the upper edge of the Volume III rear face, undoubtedly from abrasion on the slipcase edge. The Volume I dust jacket is neatly price-clipped with spine end losses to a maximum depth of .5 inch and minor wear at extremities and hinges. All three dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. The original publisher's plain navy leatherette slipcase remains complete and intact, with some wear at the corners, some dark staining mostly to the back, and splits at the upper and lower rear seams.         Seven Years in Tibet

London: Rupert Davis, 1953. First edition and first English translation preceding the American Edition by one year. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by Harrer on the title page. Near fine in a very good dust jacket.Seven Years in Tibet is an adventure classic that recounts Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer's 1943 escape from a British internment camp in India, his daring trek across the Himalayas, and his happy sojourn in Tibet, then, as now, a remote land little visited by foreigners. Warmly welcomed, he eventually became tutor to the Dalai Lama, teenaged god-king of the theocratic nation. The author's vivid descriptions of Tibetan rites and customs capture its unique traditions before the Chinese invasion in 1950, which prompted Harrer's departure. "One of the grandest and most incredible adventure stories I have ever read." (Santha Rama Rau, The New York Times Book Review)

        The Night of the Hunter

Harper & Brothers New York: Harper & Brothers. (1953). First. First edition. Fine in fine dustwrapper with the slightest of rubbing.Inscribed by the author soon afte rpublication: "Kindest personal regards to my good friend Bob Carlitz, Davis Grubb. March 18, 1954". Basis for the memorable film directed by Charles Laughton and featuring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, Lillian Gish, and magnificent camera work by Stanley Cortez. The script is credited to James Agee, who died a few months after the film was released, but reportedly Laughton, dissatisfied with Agee's work, rewrote it himself from scratch. Though now considered a classic, upon release the unusual and unique film was a critical and financial failure, and Laughton never directed again. A superb copy. Signed copies of the trade edition are much less common than the publisher signed presentation issue. .
