The Desperate Hours (Author's Original Typescript, with numerous corrections)

Random House New York: Random House, 1953. Joseph Hayes' original typed manuscript for his most famous novel, "The Desperate Hours," with numerous authorial typeovers and editorial corrections. Stamps from the James Brown Agency (author's agent), date stamp of Sept 15 1953 and hand notation "Random House New York" to the title page. The book was published by Random House in 1954, and was so popular upon its release that the author rewrote it as both a play and a movie screenplay within a year of publication. Basis for the classic 1955 film noir directed by William Wyler and starring Humphrey Bogart and Arthur Kennedy, a story of home invasion by a group of ruthless prison escapees, that was in some ways the pinnacle of American urban paranoia in the 1950s. Housed in Hayes' original brown file folder, with his personal return label affixed (indicating a home address in Sarasota, Florida), marked in the author's hand: "ORIGINAL MANUSCIPT [sic] 'THE DESP. HRS' AS SUBMITTED TO RANDOM HOUSE." Unbound pages, Very Good condition overall, with title page and last page of text in lesser condition due to bearing most of the wear, but complete with no missing leaves. In a custom quarter-leather clamshell box.

Original Illustrations for the Book Superliner S.S. United States Written and Illustrated By Henry Billings

New York, 1953. A group of 5 artworks which are the original black and white pen and ink illustrations for the Viking Press book, "Superliner S.S. United States"; on 3 boards; each item separately mounted; on back of all three boards are the printed Viking Press paper markers, each with the typed identifications for the art; the largest and perhaps the most dramatic is the artwork for the title page, showing the liner boldly underway, 13" x 16" overall, with added mount board edging and matte cover with clear plastic 'window' protector; other four pieces smaller, average size 7" x 8", mounted two to a board and also with 'window' mattes: illustrations for pages half-title, 55, 60, 61; two of these are of the S.S. United States, fore and stern depictions; the other two are of historic vessels, one very action-packed of a sidewheel & masted steamer 'going down' amidst storm waves; great illustrative art by Henry Billings (1901-1985), American painter, illustrator, muralist and educator, a Bronxville NY native whose murals and artworks can be found in post offices and public buildings around America, taught at Bard College for nearly 20 years and was a member of the Woodstock Artists Assoc. among others. (WWW in American Art, 1999); some wear and soiling, tears to the mount cardstock; one label chipped at corners, still identifiable; artworks very good and giving a glimpse into the artistic process of creating Billings' work on this historic American cruise ship, breaker and holder of Atlantic speed crossing records and currently still afloat - at dock in Philadelphia.. Very Good.

"Voted the most significant English language play of the 20th century in a British Royal National Theatre poll of 800 playwrights, actors, directors and journalists... Beckett's naked play about two tramps waiting for Godot has tapped into our 20th-century public consciousness.         Creature from the Black Lagoon --- in the Rare Dustjacket

London: Dragon Books, No Date (circa 1953-1954 ), 1st Edition, 1st Printing ----------hardcover, blue cloth, Near Fine but there is a thin line of fading along the upper edge of the boards and a small faded spot on the spine where there has been a wee bit of loss on the dustjacket spine, bit of foxing to the endpapers so lets call this a Very Good+ book, the dustjacket is overall a strong Good example ( bordering on a reasonable Very Good ), small bit of loss on spine of dustjacket not affecting any lettering, light overall wear, ---with brilliant cover art depicting the Creature in his cave, carrying an unconscious woman, ---whilst Dracula and Frankenstein heralded the beginning of the great horror movies, by the 1950's horror movies had really degraded to the point where they were being presented as comedies, a la Abbot and Costello meet the Wolfman ---or Dracula ---.or The Mummy, etc. Creature from the Black Lagoon was a successful last ( aqueous ) gasp at the tradition of real horror movies, proving very successful, this movie tie in edition is rare!, reportedly, a paperback version of this book sold for $1000, I expect that I will never see another copy in my bookselling lifetime, the small bookseller's label in the scan is so the scan cannot be copied (easily anyway) and is NOT on the actual dustjacket, Fearn wrote under the following names: Geoffrey Armstrong, Thornton Ayre, Hugo Blayn, Morton Boyce, Hank Carson, Dennis Clive, Hank Cole, Polton Cross, Mark Denholm, Douglas Dodd, Sheridan Drew, Max Elton, Matt Francis, Spike Gordon, Volsted Gridban, Griff, Malcolm Hartley, Conrad G Holt, Preston James, Frank Jones, Nat Karta, Marvin Kayne, Clem Larson, Herbert Lloyd, Paul Lorraine, Astron del Martia, Jed McCloud, Mick McCoy, Jed McNab, Dom Passante, Francis Rose, Laurence F Rose, Ward Ross, Frank Russell, John Russell, Arnold Ryden, Bryan Shaw, John Slate, Vargo Statten, Earl Titan, John Werheim, Ephraim Winiki, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo.         Prototype Sports Car Concept Art

Boston: circa 1953. Tempera on paper. Initialled "R.S.W." Mounted circular label, lower right. 15 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches. Framed. Handsome 1950's sports car design All of our present information about this drawing comes from a label on the back of the piece, which indicates that it comes from the archives of the A.J. White Motor Vehicle Research Company - designers of exotic cars in the Boston, MA area. We have not discovered any further information about the A. J. White Research Company thus far, nor about the artist, R.S.W. of this particular drawing. There does not appear to be any connection to the great White truck manufacturer. The drawing itself is especially nice, its cool red sportscar positioned diagonally between two details in blue, in a way that makes it appear anxious to move.

Little, Brown. Fine in Fine dust jacket; Black cloth boards are clean and bright with no soiling, wear, or fraying. Crisp clean corners. Spine is tight and straight with no separation. There is variation in the page edge color due to different paper stock used in the first edition leaves. This is true and requisite for all first printing copies. Page edges are otherwise clean and tight. Spine lettering has flaking as shown due to the poor quality gold gilt in the title. This is quite common with this edition. Endpapers are clean with no names, bookplates, or writing. Internally this is an unread copy with no soiling, tears, or foxing. DJ with minor conservation to folds and page edges. A notoriously difficult jacket to find in collectible condition this copy is remarkable for its bright nearly unfaded spine panel. Flaps are price intact with a small stain on front fold. 1953. First US Edition; First Printing. Hardcover. 8vo; was issued in an edition only half as large as Catcher in the Rye (5000 copies vs. 10,000 for Catcher). Stated first edition book .

Principles of operation. Type 701 and associated equipment

IBM New York: IBM, 1953. No Dust Jacket. International Business Machines Corporation. Principles of operation. Type 701 and associated equipment. IBM electronic data processing machines. [New York: IBM, ©1953; printed 1954.] Spiral-bound. Original printed wrappers, small tear in front wrapper, light wear. 103 [1]pp., including folding illustration. Text illustrations. 282 x 213 mm. Second printing, revised. In 1952 IBM entered the commercial electronic computer market with its 701 system, designed for scientific applications, and described by IBM president Thomas J. Watson Jr., as "the machine that carried us into the electronics business" (quoted in Hurd 1983, 110). The 701, also known as the "Defense Calculator," had originally been developed to meet the high-speed calculating needs of the United States Defense Department during the Korean War. The machine was designed by an engineering team led by Jerrier Haddad and Nathaniel Rochester with an architecture based on John von Neumann's IAS computer, employing a binary number system and a parallel-memory device capable of retrieving all the digits of a "word" at once. For storage, it used three-inch "Williams tubes". The 701's processor performed multiplications at a rate of two thousand per second-four times faster than UNIVAC-and the machine could read data from both punched cards and magnetic tape. The 701 was referred to in company literature as an "electronic data processing machine"-IBM deliberately avoided using the word "computer," which was too closely associated with the rival UNIVAC. The first 701, consisting of twelve separate units, was installed in December 1952 at IBM's headquarters in New York City, in the same ground-floor display room that had formerly housed the monster SSEC electromechanical calculator (see no. 580). Eighteen more 701 systems were manufactured, most of them leased by the Defense Department or military aerospace firms for $15,000 per month; the last 701 was shipped to the United States Weather Bureau in the spring of 1955. The 701's success was critical in persuading the initially reluctant IBM to commit itself to electronic computers: "Prior to [the 701] experience, planning and marketing executives could speculate endlessly on whether data could safely be entrusted to invisible tape recording or control entrusted to the ethereal stored program. But when it had been demonstrated that 701s could be manufactured, programmed, maintained, and relied upon for useful results as promised . . . the question thereafter was not whether to build new computers but which machines to introduce and when . . ." (Bashe et al. 1986, 164). "In order to achieve maximum versatility, every function of the machine is under control of the stored program. This versatility allows the machine to execute instructions at the rate of about 14,000 per second on typical problems. Also, functions such as input-output operation, which are determined by fixed circuitry on some computers, are under complete control of the program, and, hence, under complete control of the operator. The great advantage of this system lies in the fact that a customer may build up a library of programs which will accomplish his special applications at peak machine efficiency. No compromise in efficiency is necessary in the design of the machine to accommodate an average application. Furthermore, a customer may efficiently calculate on any 701 installation simply by using his own library of programs" (p. [5]). When we checked OCLC cited three copies of this brochure.         Front grill concept design

1953. Watercolour and pastel on composition board. Signed, "Arbib '53". 17 x 23 1/4 inches. Framed. 25 1/4 x 31 1/4 inches. A striking frontal encounter with an innovative grill design This full-on, confrontational drawing of a new front grill by RIchard Arbib embodies the thrill of innovation that played such a large part of car design in the 1950's. During this rather euphoric period, cars became more open, colourful and "modernistic": curvilinear and sleek. In Arbib's picture, we come right up against a shield-like center piece that branches out to either side in a no nonsense, two level bumper and that threatens to knock us down, despite the genial, middle-aged driver. Elements of this front configuration appeared in many incarnations in subsequent years. Richard Arbib was a tireless industrial designer whose work ranged from watches to yachts, and included many lasting automotive innovations. Born in Gloversville, New York of Egyptian parentage, he attended Pratt. He worked on GM's exhibition at the 1939 World's Fair, and then various automotive, industrial and military designers (during the war) until he set up his own firm in New York in 1949. His work during the 1950's was especially important to the future as many of his dynamic and "space-age" designs were incorporated into production models of the late 50's, 60's and 70's. He also supplied illustrations to science fiction magazines and novels. Scharf, Richard H. Arbib 1917-1995 Visionary American Designer. 2006.

New York: Scribner's Sons.. , 1953 Excellent Presentation Copy of the First Trade Edition, First Issue with "A" on the copyright page. A beautiful example in dustwrapper & custom slipcase. Lindbergh has written: "The publication date is September 14th" at the bottom of the page. One of a handful of important Author's advance copies inscribed prior to publication. The dustwrapper is clean & bright - the binding is tight & fresh & professionally re-cased [virtually impossible to tell, even to the expert eye], the illustrated endpapers are clean & the contents without stray markings, slightly marred by a small if unpleasant but rather harmless stain on the front edge which shows light use. A very good or better, very desirable presentation copy of Lindbergh's Pulitzer Prize-winning autobiography. A seminal book about early aviation, the war, & "lucky Lindy's" amazing accomplishments; like piloting the first solo non-stop flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927 Quite uncommon in this rare presentation state..
