Atomic Theory of Liquid Helium Near Absolute Zero

Lancaster: American Physical Society, 1953-54. First edition. Offprint of one of his major papers. Feynman offprints are very rarely seen on the market. This one derives from the estate of an officer of the Press Office of the Physics Department at Caltech. OCLC lists no copies of this separate printing.

& & During the early 1950’s Feynman became “especially interested in liquid helium. At ordinary temperatures and pressures, helium exists as a gas; but at extremely low temperatures (a few degrees above absolute zero), helium becomes a liquid—indeed, a liquid with strange properties. Liquid helium displays superfluidity, that is, it flows with no viscosity or friction at all (unlike ordinary liquids). The phenomenon had been discovered experimentally during the 1930s, and the great Russian theorist Lev Landau had provided a successful phenomenological description during the 1940s.” (DSB).

& & Successful as Landau’s theory was, it lacked an atomistic foundation. Then, in the spring of 1953, “Richard Feynman entered the scene. He set himself the task of providing a theoretical understanding of the problem of liquid helium on an atomic basis, which could only be done if one approached the problem from first principles. (Mehra & Rechenberg). “Feynman brought his newest tools to bear on the problem—path integrals and Feynman diagrams—to explain superfluidity on a rigorously quantum-mechanical basis. In addition to the particle-like quantum excitations that had been studied, Feynman realized that a new quantum effect also played a role: the formation of quantum vortices. Once again his intuitive, pictorial approach proved successful.” (DSB).

& & “While he greatly admired Landau’s contributions to and successes in the field, Feynman pointed out several weaknesses in Landau’s theory. Notably, Landau’s quantum hydrodynamical approach treated Helium II as a continuous medium, which right from the beginning sacrificed the atomic structure of the liquid and thus forestalled the possibility of calculating the various characteristics of the system, such as the various parameters, on an atomic basis. In his first paper on the ‘Atomic theory of the lambda-transition in helium’, he showed ‘from first principles that, in spite of the large interatomic forces, liquid He4 should exhibit a transition analogous to the transition in an ideal gas’ (p. 1291). By writing ‘the exact partition function as an integral over trajectories, using the space-time approach to quantum mechanics’, Feynman could indeed derive a Landau-type energy spectrum [in the present paper] and further demonstrate phonon-like excitations evolve into roton-like ones at large momenta [in ‘Atomic theory of the two fluid model of liquid helium’]” (Mehra & Rechenberg, The Historical Development of Quantum Theory, Vol. 6, Part 2, p. 1160).

& & Offered with: “Atomic theory of the lambda-transition in helium”, pp. 1291-1301 in Physical Review, Vol. 91, No. 2, and “Atomic theory of the two fluid model of liquid helium”, pp. 262-277 in Physical Review, Vol. 94, No. 2 (two complete journal issues in original printed wrappers).& Offprint from Physical Review, Vol. 91, No. 2, pp. 1301-1308. Self-wrappers, stapled as issued (punch holes in inner margin filled, not affecting text).

Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids. A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid and OTHERS

London: Nature, 1953. First Edition. Hard Cover. Ex-Library. We offer BOTH volumes 171 and 172 of Nature, A Weekly Journal of Science, containing the foundational papers announcing the Discovery of the Molecular Structure of DNA. Together, these volumes highlight the beginning of what we now know as molecular biology. 100 Books Famous in Medicine (Norman/Grolier) notes: 'Forty years after Watson and Crick's discovery, so much of the basic understanding of medicine and disease has advanced to the molecular level that their paper [see #1 below] may be considered the most significant single contribution to biology and medicine in the twentieth century' (pages 361-362). Volume 171: [2], 1168, iii-lxiv pages. Volume 172: [2], 1200, iii-lxxi, [1-ads] pages. Together, January 3, 1953 through December 26, 1953 issues (1953 complete). Matching blue buckram bindings, ex corporate library with occasional stamps, library pocket, and usual library markings. Original issue covers not bound in as usually the case. Volume 171 lays out the structure of DNA. Volume 172 further confirms the theory with experimental work, and starts to build a connection to protein synthesis which in retrospect was the link which catapulted the discovery of DNA into a useful and actionable research direction. Many of today's useful inventions spring from this linkage, which really gained traction in the 10 years following the initial discovery (see Quiet debut for the double helix by Robert Olby, Nature, Vol 421, Jan 23 2003 for a nice treatment of this idea). Garrison and Morton (5th edition) 256.3, 256.4; Dibner Heralds of Science (revised) 200; Grolier 100 (Medicine/Norman); A cornerstone of any collection in biology or 20th century medicine. Additional information available upon request. Very Good.

Molecular structure of Nucleic Acids. Nature, volumes 171 and 172. (complete)

London, MacMillan, 1953. In two volumes. Royal 8vo. In contemporary uniform cloth bindings with title and volume numbers on spine.* First edition of what most scientists consider the greatest intellectual achievement of modern science: the discovery of the genetic functions of DNA - the genetic code. Crick and Watson shared the 1962 Nobel Prize in medicine and physiology, mainly for this accomplishment. Volumes 171 and 172 contain a number of very important articles on DNA. Besides Crick and Watson's well-known article "A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid", there are, among others: Franklin, Rosalind E. and Gosling, G. R.G.: "Molecular Configuration in Sodium Thymonucleate."; Watson, James D. and Crick, Francis Harry Compton: "Genetical Implications of the Structure of xyribonucleic Acid"; Franklin, Rosalind E. and Gosling, G. R.G.: "Evidence for 2-chain Helix in Crystalline Structure of Sodium Deoxyriboncleate"; Wilkins, M.H.F., Seeds, W.E., Stokes, A.R. and Wilson, H.R.: "Helical Structure of Crystalline Deoxypentose Nucleic Acid." Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids. A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid AND Molecular Structure of Deoxypentose Nucleic Acids WITH Molecular Configuration in Sodium Thymonucleate + Genetical Implications of the Structure of Deoxyribonucleic A

London: Nature, 1953. First Edition. Hard Cover. Ex-Library. [581]-1168 pages. Exlibrary, 3/4 cloth over marbled boards. Occasional library stamps in the text. Together, these papers announce the beginning of what we now know as molecular biology, and represent the discovery of DNA, today a household word. It is hard to understate the importance of this work and although recent articles have disputed whose genius was primary in the discovery, it is clear that all of these scientists were key contributors. Watson, Crick, and Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1962 for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nuclear acids and its significance for information transfer in living material. A cornerstone to any collection in biology or 20th century medicine. Garrison and Morton 256.3 The present volume is the entire first half of Volume 171, covering April 4, 1953 to June 27, 1953. A more detailed description of the papers is available upon request. Good.

Faster Than Thought: A Symposium on Digital Computing Machines

London: Sir Isaac Pitman & Sons, Ltd.. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1953. First Edition. Hardcover. NOISBN . [very light soiling to bottom edges of covers, slight bumping to bottom corners; jacket spine a bit browned, light wear at corners]. (B&W photographs, diagrams) Very attractive copy of this important early "state of the technology" symposium about computers, in which "the contributions of twenty-four well-known experts have been brought together to give a clear account of modern digital computing machines, their history, theory and design, and their application to industry, commerce and scientific research." The editor, later Baron Bowden, as a noted English scientist, and quite prescient about the future impact of computer technology. (It's worth nothing that there is only one American listed among the contributing experts, Mr. R. Stuart-Williams of RCA Laboratories in Princeton, N.J. My favorite name among the contributors: Miss Cicely M. Popplewell, Royal Society Computing Laboratory, Manchester University.) Chapter 25, written by Dr. A.M. Turing (often referred to as "the father of computer science and artificial intelligence) is entitled "Digital Computers Applied to Games," in which it's discussed "how a digital computer can be made to play chess -- it does so rather badly, and how it plays draughts [checkers] -- it does so quite well." Also described in the chapter is Nimrod, "a special simple machine which was built to entertain the public during the [1951] Festival of Britain," and notable in computing history as having been the first digital computer designed exclusively to play a game (in this case Nim, a mathemetical game of strategy). Stamped on both endpapers: Technical Library; Property of Leach Corporation, 5915 S. Avalon Blvd., Los Angeles 3, California. .

Some Faces in the Crowd (First Edition, inscribed in the year of publication)

Random House New York: Random House, 1953. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Schulberg to his top editor, Saxe Commins, in the year of publication on the verso of the half-title page: "For Saxe / Dear friend and guide through all these many years. Looking forward to many more fruitful hours and years of work together / Yours affectionately / Budd / April 17, 1953." Saxe Commins, along with Bennett Cerf of Random House, encouraged Schulberg to expand a series of short stories in Liberty magazine into a novel, which eventually became "What Makes Sammy Run?" Near Fine in a Very Good plus dust jacket. A bit of foxing to the edges of the boards; jacket is lightly rubbed and nicked at the corners, with a bit of the usual toning to the spine panel. The first story in this collection, "Your Arkansas Traveler," is the basis for Elia Kazan's under appreciated and brutal film noir, "A Face in the Crowd," starring Andy Griffith, Patricia O'Neal and Walter Matthau. Schulberg signed a lot of books after penning the screenplay to "On the Waterfront" in 1954, but inscriptions dated prior to that time are most uncommon. A powerful association between Schulberg and his first major editor, the man who literally introduced him to the limelight.
