Junkie. Confessions of an Unredeemed Drug Addict

NY: Ace. (1953). Burroughs' pseudonymous first book, a paperback original bound back-to-back with Maurice Helbrant's Narcotic Agent. Junkie was a straightforward narrative of Burroughs' experiences with drugs; the publisher chose to release it couched in an anti-drug context, as a first person example of the horrors of drug use, and bound with a narcotic agent's memoir. A couple small spots of rubbing; darkening to page edges, else near fine, with the spine square and no creasing to it. Very uncommon thus. First Edition. Softcover.

The People's Leaders, The Central People's Government Committee of the People's Republic of China

The Da Tong Printing Factory, [Most likely Beijing] 1953 - Printed pictorial poster. Framed size: 38 3/4 x 29". Sheet size: 30 1/4 x 20 5/8". Inventory#: p568pmat. This exuberant Chinese propaganda poster contains portraits of the 63 members of the first government of the People's Republic of China. At the top and center of the work is the visage of Mao Tse-Tung, founder of the People's Republic of China and one of the most prominent Communist theoreticians in history. Mao's philosophy on revolutionary struggle and guerrilla warfare has proved extraordinarily influential, especially among Third World revolutionaries. Of Hunanese peasant stock, Mao was trained in Chinese classics and later received a modern education. One of the original members of the Chinese Communist party, he organized Kuomintang-sponsored peasant and industrial unions (1920s) and directed the Kuomintang's Peasant Movement Training Institute (1926). After the Kuomintang-Communist split (1927), Mao led the disastrous "Autumn Harvest Uprising" in Hunan, leading to his ouster from the central committee of the party. From 1928 until 1931 Mao, with Zhu De and others, established rural soviets in the hinterlands, and built the Red Army. In 1931 he was elected chairman of the newly established Soviet Republic of China, based in Jiangxi province. After withstanding five encirclement campaigns launched by Chiang Kai-shek, Mao led (1934-35) the Red Army on the long march (6,000 miles) from Jiangxi north to Yan'an in Shaanxi province, emerging as the most important Communist leader. In 1949, after the Communists had taken almost all of mainland China, Mao became chairman of the central government council of the newly established People's Republic of China; he was re-elected to the post, the most powerful in China, in 1954. This poster was released one year prior to Mao's re-election. In an attempt to break with the Russian model of Communism and to imbue the Chinese people with renewed revolutionary vigor, Mao launched the Great Leap Forward (1958). The program was a terrible failure, an estimated 20 to 30 million people died in the famine that followed (1958-61), and Mao withdrew temporarily from public view. The failure of this program also resulted in a break with the Soviet Union, which cut off aid. Mao accused Soviet leaders of betraying Marxism. In 1959 Liu Shaoqi, an opponent of the Great Leap Forward, replaced Mao as chairman of the central government council, but Mao retained his chairmanship of the Communist party politburo. Mao's figure is an important symbol in China and in the global communist movement as a whole. Indeed, the "Cult of Mao" proved vital in kicking off the Cultural Revolution (1966-76). Large quantities of politicized art were produced by the Communist party and circulated - with Mao at the center. Yet even after the end of the Cultural Revolution, many people have continued to worship Mao in family altars and in temples. This poster shows 63 members of the first government of the PRC, presided over by Mao, along with his six vice-presidents. From left to right they are Gao Gang, Li Ji Shen, Liu Shao Qi, Mao Tse-Tung, Zhu De, Sung Jing Ling [Madame Sun Yat-sen] and Zhang Lan. Zhou En Lai, Prime Minister, is on the third rang, second from left. Deng Xiao Peng, representing his region, is on the fifth rang, first from left. Lin Biao is on the second rang, second from left. Literature: Jean-Yves Bajon, Les Annëes Mao, illustrated on p. 14.

Ballantine Books, New York 1953 - First Printing, a Review Copy with the rare publisher's slip laid in. Octavo; red textured boards, with titles stamped in yellow on spine and front panel; 199pp, [3]. A sharp copy, virtually unrubbed at the edges, as most copies are usually found; very faint trace of foxing to the textblock edges, and to the pastedowns and endpages, else Fine and clean throughout. Dustjacket is unclipped, absent chips, tears, or wear, and displays none of the typical fading to the spine colors; lightly foxed overall, most noticeable on the verso but evident on the outset - Near Fine. While we're confident that copies of Fahrenheit will always be available on the market, standout copies that are unfaded will always be the exception. Review Copies of this title are seldom seen, and these days, a Review Slip is rarer than Bradbury's signature by a country mile.       Geoffrey Bles, London 1953 - pp. 217, b/w illustrations, original map end papers to the front, blank to the back. Unfortunately only the front panel and front panel of the original dust jacket is present, but this has now been expertly repaired and mounted by a professional paper conservator using the finest conservation materials - methyl celloluse and hand-made Japanese Kozu Shi tissue paper, replacing the missing parts with this paper so it can still wrap around the book. This ensures that the dust jacket is displayed to its best potential and arrests any further deterioration (and a conservation process that is fully reversible). The dust jacket is not price clipped showing 10s 6d net and is now protected in a clear removable archival sleeve. Original blue hard back binding with silver-gilt lettering to the spine, very good and bright with a little rubbing to edges and a little fading to the central area of the spine.         Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids

Fisher, St. Albans 1953 - First separate edition (offprint) of the three papers announcing the discovery of the structure of DNA, one of the most important scientific achievements of the century. The three landmark articles (including an illustration of the double helix), appeared together in the April 25, 1953 issue of Nature. Realizing the significant of the articles, the publisher took the highly unusual step of publishing the offprint with the three articles together. Few copies were printed and the offprint is of great rarity on the market. Watson, James D.; Crick, Francis. Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids, A Structure for Dexyribose Nucleic Acid.         Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids. A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid and OTHERS

Nature, London 1953 - First Edition. Volume 171: [2], 1168, iii-lxiv pages. Volume 172: [2], 1200, iii-lxxi, [1-ads] pages. Together, January 3, 1953 through December 26, 1953 issues (1953 complete). Matching blue buckram bindings, ex-library and ex-libris corporate library with occasional stamps, library pocket, and usual library markings. Original issue covers not bound in as usually the case. Cloth. We offer BOTH volumes 171 and 172 of Nature, A Weekly Journal of Science, containing the foundational papers announcing the Discovery of the Molecular Structure of DNA. Together, these volumes highlight the beginning of what we now know as molecular biology. 100 Books Famous in Medicine (Norman/Grolier) notes: 'Forty years after Watson and Crick's discovery, so much of the basic understanding of medicine and disease has advanced to the molecular level that their paper [see #1 below] may be considered the most significant single contribution to biology and medicine in the twentieth century' (pages 361-362). Volume 171 lays out the structure of DNA. Volume 172 further confirms the theory with experimental work, and starts to build a connection to protein synthesis which in retrospect was the link which catapulted the discovery of DNA into a useful and actionable research direction. Many of today's useful inventions spring from this linkage, which really gained traction in the 10 years following the initial discovery (see Quiet debut for the double helix by Robert Olby, Nature, Vol 421, Jan 23 2003 for a nice treatment of this idea). Garrison and Morton (5th edition) 256.3, 256.4; Dibner Heralds of Science (revised) 200; Grolier 100 (Medicine/Norman).The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1962 was awarded jointly to Francis Harry Compton Crick, James Dewey Watson and Maurice Hugh Frederick Wilkins "for their discoveries concerning the molecular structure of nucleic acids and its significance for information transfer in living material".A cornerstone of any collection in biology or 20th century medicine.
