Playboy 1953 December Magazine #1 Marilyn Monroe Original Issue

HUGH HEFNER, 1953-12-01. HUGH HEFNER, 1953-12-01. Single Issue Magazine. Good. Good- (3 of 10) Complete, no loose or missing pages with a nice Monroe pin-up. Covers attached, but loosely. There is a waterstain to the spine - about 3x1 inches - near the bottom. Another waterstain to the edgepages about 3x1 of the 1st 18 pages. The waterstains do not discolor the Monroe pin-up (as it is a thicker more glossy paper) although there is some minor warping. The bottom staple is mildly rusty (as it is in the waterstain area), the spine is frayed at several spots, and especially around the staples. There is a tiny chip to the edge of the cover, and some soiling to the cover. A crease to the cover over on the right side, not across Marilyn. A vintage newsstand date stamp at the top left corner cover "Nov 1953". SEE the Photos, this looks a lot better than it sounds.. * * * * * * * * * * {FREE Media Mail Shipping!         Principles of operation. Type 701 and associated equipment.

IBM, New York 1953 - International Business Machines Corporation. Principles of operation. Type 701 and associated equipment. IBM electronic data processing machines. [New York: IBM, 1953; printed 1954.] Spiral-bound. Original printed wrappers, small tear in front wrapper, light wear. 103 [1]pp., including folding illustration. Text illustrations. 282 x 213 mm. Second printing, revised. In 1952 IBM entered the commercial electronic computer market with its 701 system, designed for scientific applications, and described by IBM president Thomas J. Watson Jr., as "the machine that carried us into the electronics business" (quoted in Hurd 1983, 110). The 701, also known as the "Defense Calculator," had originally been developed to meet the high-speed calculating needs of the United States Defense Department during the Korean War. The machine was designed by an engineering team led by Jerrier Haddad and Nathaniel Rochester with an architecture based on John von Neumann's IAS computer, employing a binary number system and a parallel-memory device capable of retrieving all the digits of a "word" at once. For storage, it used three-inch "Williams tubes". The 701's processor performed multiplications at a rate of two thousand per second-four times faster than UNIVAC-and the machine could read data from both punched cards and magnetic tape. The 701 was referred to in company literature as an "electronic data processing machine"-IBM deliberately avoided using the word "computer," which was too closely associated with the rival UNIVAC.The first 701, consisting of twelve separate units, was installed in December 1952 at IBM's headquarters in New York City, in the same ground-floor display room that had formerly housed the monster SSEC electromechanical calculator (see no. 580). Eighteen more 701 systems were manufactured, most of them leased by the Defense Department or military aerospace firms for $15,000 per month; the last 701 was shipped to the United States Weather Bureau in the spring of 1955. The 701's success was critical in persuading the initially reluctant IBM to commit itself to electronic computers: "Prior to [the 701] experience, planning and marketing executives could speculate endlessly on whether data could safely be entrusted to invisible tape recording or control entrusted to the ethereal stored program. But when it had been demonstrated that 701s could be manufactured, programmed, maintained, and relied upon for useful results as promised . . . the question thereafter was not whether to build new computers but which machines to introduce and when . . ." (Bashe et al. 1986, 164)."In order to achieve maximum versatility, every function of the machine is under control of the stored program. This versatility allows the machine to execute instructions at the rate of about 14,000 per second on typical problems. Also, functions such as input-output operation, which are determined by fixed circuitry on some computers, are under complete control of the program, and, hence, under complete control of the operator. The great advantage of this system lies in the fact that a customer may build up a library of programs which will accomplish his special applications at peak machine efficiency. No compromise in efficiency is necessary in the design of the machine to accommodate an average application. Furthermore, a customer may efficiently calculate on any 701 installation simply by using his own library of programs" (p. [5]). When we checked OCLC cited three copies of this brochure.         Typed Letter Signed [TLS]

New York: np. New York: np. 1st Edition. No Binding. Fine. Important Eleanor Roosevelt letter with strong words denouncing Senator Joseph McCarthy. The letter is addressed to W. Hugh Jones, a local Pennsylvania Democratic politician, in response to a letter by Jones seeking clarification for her words as quoted in the A.P. Typed on her 202 Fifty-Sixth Street, New York letterhead and dated August 31, 1953, she writes: Dear Mr. Jones: The A.P. dispatch was only partly quoted correctly. I said "He has made the great mass of people blindly afraid of communism. People in government circles are afraid to be different because of the unfair methods Senator McCarthy used'". I am not slandering or maligning my country but I am anxious that everyone of the citizens of the US wakes up to the harm he has done our prestige throughout the world. Everywhere they ask if he is destroying our freedom. In Europe they have seen a Hitler and a Stalin come to power and they recognize the methods used by Senator McCarthy as being very similar. Very sincerely yours, [signed] Eleanor Roosevelt New York:, np, 1953. Two quarto sheets (6in x 7in) with type on one side, original envelope. With Jones's copy of his letter. Fold at center, otherwise fine. Eleanor Roosevelt letters with good political content are rare.

Original Science Fiction Illustration By Jay Landau for "Death of a Sensitive", Harry Bates, May, 1953 Issue of "Science Fiction Plus"

No Location: No Publisher, 1953. No Location: No Publisher, 1953 Original illustration, ink on stiff board, by Jay Landau (later, the famed painter Jacob Landau) for the sci-fi pulp story "Death of A Sensitive" from the May, 1953 issue of Science Fiction Plus. 9 7/8" x 9" overall size, image size is most of that (see scan). Note: the layout editor's note at the bottom of the image in scan, which says 7 3/8", refers to the size the image is to be in the printed issue, not the 9" width of this original. This was executed as line art on copper, as were most of Landau's pulp illustrations; this is this black and white from that for the magazine for reproduce in that May issue. There were presumably no others executed from it. Annotation on front (see scan), also annotations on reverse. Former paste foxing on reverse, presumably from the layout process for the issue; none on front. The front, the image itself, is fine, as used by the publisher. Used to illustrate the Harry Bates story, "Death of a Sensitive" - a story deemed by publisher Hugo Gernsback's editor, Sam Moskowitz, to be the best he ever published in the magazine (Bates was the author of, in Astounding Science Fiction in 1940, "Farewell to the Master", which later became the basis for the classic sci-fi film, "The Day the Earth Stood Still"). A moody illustration by Landau, who, as the pulp illustrator he was at that time, is hard to find on the original sci-fi art market. Though he loved science fiction and did a fair amount of early magazine, he later was able to concentrate solely on the stylish, impactful, often socially conscious and always psychologically disturbing mainstream painting which was his first love and for which he later became so famous. His early professional work for publications was done as either Jay Landau or J. Landau (often signed only "Landau", though), but the later work was, of course, largely by "Jacob Landau". Landau died in November, 2001 at the age of 85. The intimidating and moody nature of this illustration is, to a degree, in keeping with that later painting style. The May issue of Science Fiction Plus is not itself included with this item; the scan of the published image is included with this listing for reference. l-lng1
