A Typed Letter Signed regarding the Bricker Amendment.

      - Written by John F. Kennedy as senator from Massachusetts on United States Senate stationary, Washington, D.C. Dated: Monday, March 22, 1954To: Mr. Neil LeonardBingham, Dana & Gould1 Federal StreetBoston, MassachusettsDear Mr. Leonard: Thank you for writing to me concerning my vote on the Bricker Amendment. My position on this resolution was reached only after considerable study and deliberation and a statement was prepared setting forth my reasons for opposing this resolution as well as the George Amendment. In the event that this statement has not come to your attention, I am enclosing a copy for your information. With every good wish, I am, Sincerely yours, John F. KennedyEnclosureJFK: wjdCondition: Very clean and clear, typed in bright blue ink, with 2 horizontal folds not affecting any of the text. The enclosure is not present, but there are tiny staple holes at the top left-hand corner just above "John F. Kennedy." The Bricker Amendment is the collective name of a number of proposed amendments to the United States Constitution considered by the United States Senate in the 1950s. Each of these amendments would have placed restrictions on the scope and ratification of treaties and executive agreements entered into by the United States and are named for their sponsor, Senator John W. Bricker of Ohio, a conservative Republican. The best-known version of the Bricker Amendment, considered by the Senate in 1953–54, declared that no treaty could be made by the United States that conflicted with the Constitution, was self-executing without the passage of separate enabling legislation through Congress, or which granted Congress legislative powers beyond those specified in the Constitution. It also limited the president's power to enter into executive agreements with foreign powers.Bricker's proposal attracted broad bipartisan support and was a focal point of intra-party conflict between the administration of president Dwight D. Eisenhower and the Old Right faction of conservative Republican senators. Despite the initial support, the Bricker Amendment was blocked through the intervention of President Eisenhower and failed in the Senate by a single vote in 1954. Three years later the Supreme Court of the United States explicitly ruled in Reid v. Covert that the Bill of Rights cannot be abrogated by agreements with foreign powers. Nevertheless, Senator Bricker's ideas still have supporters, and new versions of his amendment have been reintroduced in Congress periodically. (Wikipedia)

Autograph manuscript of a draft letter to Igor Stravinsky about collaborating on an opera

The Boat House, Laugharne, 16 June 1953. Two pages on single sheet of blue-grey paper, 7 x 5 1/4 ins. Written in blue ink. A little soiled and creased. Two mounting tabs on verso. Published. Draft letter to Igor Stravinsky entirely in ThomasÕs hand, with several corrections and deletions; unfinished. Written less than 5 months before his death in Nov. 1953, this poignant letter reflects ThomasÕs hesitancy in expressing interest in writing something for Stravinsky to set to music perhaps. Ã’I have lots of ideas - good, bad, and chaotic [with a line to insert this later in the letter]... I was very very glad to meet you, for a little time, in Boston... IÕve been thinking a lot about the opera. As soon as I can get something down on paper, I would love to send it to you... I shd like very much - if you think you wd still like me to work with you; and IÕll be enormously honoured to do that - to come to California to see you... And by that time, I hope, too, to have some clearer ideas about a libretto...Ó Shortly after this meeting Thomas writes of his excitement at the commission and of the payment and royalties he expects. As Alexander Carpenter noted: Ã’Stravinsky had for some time expressed enthusiasm for the idea of writing an opera in collaboration with Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. When Thomas' sudden death in 1953 put an end to this prospect, Stravinsky composed a work to his memory [in 1954], using Thomas' memorial to his own father, "Do not go gentle into that good night" as the text. The complete title of In Memoriam includes the designation "Dirge-Canons and Song," which describes the work's structure. The song, a setting of Thomas' poem, is placed between the two dirges, which bookend the work as prelude and postlude."

Typed Letter Signed, in Danish, 2 separate pages folio, Rungstedlund, September 24, 1953

      - A late letter to the editor Schelde-Møller, discussing the politics of the animal rights movement. "I am not sure that my speech will be good for the animals. The friend of the animals is for the supporters of the vivisection is a fresh thought." Blixen then expresses concern about how the opponents will try and gather interest by focusing on the split of the organization "and I could do more harm than good . All test animals of higher species have my deepest compassion and I do not differ between dogs and cats. My whole action is built upon the pronouncements of Prof. Okkel. I lost confidence in the discussion because it has become virtually impossible to communicate with the scientist . I would not accept that only dogs would be accepted by vivisection. I saw in this gesture, a beginning." She gives her views. "I myself am of the opinion that the community of animal friends is more important than these differences. I wrote this to you so you could, in case, that I withdraw it not to think that I have betrayed our common goal, but to support it." Nicely signed, "Karen Blixen Finecke." [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        ABC of Economics [Signed]

London: Peter Russell The Pound Press, 1953. First edition. Hardcover. Fine/very good. A Fine copy of the first Anniversary edition (a touch of pushing to the spine ends), in Very Good dust jacket (some soiling, tiny chips to the leading corners and to the spine head), SIGNED BY EZRA POUND on the front free endpaper and there inscribed by him as follows: "H g / from / E P". Pound's ABC of Economics was first published in 1933 to, as Pound stated in the Preface, "...express the fundamentals of economics so simply and clearly that even people of different economic schools and factions will be able to understand each other when they discuss them." The ABC of Economics was the longest of Pound's six so-called "money pamphlets", this one seeking, in response to the Great Depression, a more just distribution of work, money, and goods which, in Pound's view would lead to shorter work days. Copies of the work are quite scarce to the market and, in our experience, signed copies are as scarce as hen's teeth. An altogether Very Good + copy, SIGNED BY EZRA POUND. QUITE SCARCE.

Philosophische Untersuchungen / Philosophical Investigations. Translated by G.E.M. Anscombe. Oxford: Basil Blackwell, 1953.

      - First impression of the first edition. 'Wittgenstein refrained from publishing the Investigations during his lifetime, but his explicit wish was that it be published posthumously, a wish that he probably did not have with respect to any of the rest of the voluminous work he produced between 1929 and 1951. Wittgenstein believed that the Investigations could be better understood if one saw it against the background of [his 1922 book, the] Tractatus. A considerable part of the Investigations is an attack, either explicit or implicit, on the earlier work. This development is probably unique in the history of philosophy - a thinker producing, at different periods of his life, two highly original systems of thought, each system the result of many years of intensive labors, each expressed in an elegant and powerful style, each greatly influencing contemporary philosophy, and the second being a criticism and rejection of the first' (Norman Malcolm in The Encyclopedia of Philosophy). PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Large 8vo, x [+xe], 232 [+ 232e], publisher's blue cloth, gilt spine lettering dulled as usual, lower board marked, unclipped dust-jacket with spine somewhat darkened, a few edge nicks and short closed tears, and a 3-line note on the rear flap, the errata neatly corrected in ink and ticked as such on the errata slip inserted loose, generally a very good clean copy.         BOB WILLOUGHBY: AUDREY HEPBURN PHOTOGRAPHS 1953-1966 - DELUXE SIGNED LIMITED EDITION

(WILLOUGHBY, BOB) (HEPBURN, AUDREY). Willoughby, Bob. BOB WILLOUGHBY: AUDREY HEPBURN PHOTOGRAPHS 1953-1966 - DELUXE SIGNED LIMITED EDITION. Signed and Numbered by the Photographer. Koln, GERMANY: Benedikt Taschen Verlag, 2010. First Edition 1/1000 Deluxe. Folio. Boards in a Clamshell Box. Photography Monograph. As New/As New. 282pp, profusely illustrated in black & white. Text in English, German and French. "In his distinguished career as a Hollywood photographer, Bob Willoughby took iconic photos of Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and Jane Fonda, but remains unequivocal about his favorite subject: Audrey Hepburn. Willoughby was called in to shoot the new starlet one morning shortly after she arrived in Hollywood in 1953. It was a humdrum commission for the portraitist often credited with having perfected the photojournalistic movie still, but when he met the Belgian-born beauty, Willoughby was enraptured. "She took my hand like...well a princess, and dazzled me with that smile that God designed to melt mortal men's hearts," he recalls. As Hepburn's career soared following her Oscar-winning US debut in "Roman Holiday", Willoughby became a trusted friend, framing her working and home life. His historic, perfectionist, tender photographs seek out the many facets of Hepburn's beauty and elegance, as she progresses from her debut to her career high of "My Fair Lady" in 1963. Willoughby's studies, showing her on set, preparing for a scene, interacting with actors and directors, and returning to her private life, comprise one of photography's great platonic love affairs and an unrivalled record of one of the 20th century's touchstone beauties". A pristine example of this extraordinary volume - a must-have for the Audrey completeist that sold out upon publication - limited to one thousand copies in a decorative clamshell box SIGNED AND NUMBERED by the late Bob Willoughby, unopened in the publisher's shrinkwrapped printed shipping carton, as issued. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase. 3-8365-1889-9 Inventory Number: 023236&

Sea Charts of the South Coast of England

1953-4. Half Morocco. Near Fine. 8vo. 21 by 16 cm. 53 pp., with fold-out maps, etc. Many maps meticulously drawn and colored with blue, gray and a touch of red wash of the coastline of Southern England from Cornwall to Dover. These maps were drawn by a young yachtsman enthusiast who ultimately turned professional. The maps were done ostensibly as a tool both to learn the coast better and for use, but plainly Coldwell, whether consciously or not, created something that transcends a mere utilitarian purpose, for the maps and charts exude a beauty that the common lined notebook paper can not extinguish. Coldwell was among fourteen participants lost in the Fastnet Summer race of 1979 in a horrific storm. Also one page of painted banners, and throughout are neatly written notes on how to handle particular waters. The old note paper has soiling and waviness from use. The later recasing is pristine, with some clean extra leaves in the back.

Index Testaceologicus; or A Catalogue of Shells, British and Foreign, Arranged According to the Linnean System with the Latin and English Names, References to Authors, and Places Where Found

Richard Taylor, London, UK - With: Supplement to the Index Testaceologicus and A List of the Plates of the "Index Testaceologicus," with the Lamarckian Names Adapted to the Figures in Each Plate. No date. 188pp + supplements. Over 2700 miniature hand-colored engravings were drawn from original specimens in private collections. Originally trained as a surgeon, Wood left the trade to work as a naturalist and wrote several books, this one being his most important. Full leather with gilt rules and blind stamping on both covers, a bit scuffed, edges of boards rubbed. Text is clean and free of markings, several owner and bookseller stamps and signatures to first few pages. With laid in envelope and letter from Mark Cohen of Marks & Co. Booksellers to Mary Helen Dawson dated January 30th, 1953, with additional receipt from bookseller Norman Colbeck. This copy was the gift of Mark Cohen at Marks & Co., Booksellers at 84, Charing Cross Road to Mary Helen Dawson, wife of Glen Dawson, co-owner of Dawson's Book Shop in Los Angeles during the 1940s through the 1990s. Mary Helen was an avid shell collector. In the book 84, Charing Cross Road, the author begins a correspondence with Frank Doel, bookbuyer for the Marks & Co. bookstore in 1949 after being unable to find a US source for the British literature. The correspondence developed into a friendship, with gifts and food parcels being sent overseas to help with the shortages after WWII. The story of the Marks & Co. bookstore with the Dawsons is a nice parallel, with Glen Dawson originally visiting England in the 1930s to learn the book trade and maintaining a close relationship after. As WWII threatened, Marks & Co. sent many of their books to the US for safekeeping, with the understanding that they would be returned or sold. Dawson's was able to sell the books and send large checks back to England. The letter, handwritten on Marks & Co. stationery, attests to this friendship. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Quarterly Review of Literature, Volume VII, Number 2 [Signed Twice]

Annandale-on-Hudson, New York: Bard College, 1953. Wrappers. Very Good. A Very Good copy of Volume VII, Number 2 of the Quarterly Review of Literature, an independent literary journal founded in 1943 by Warren Carrier, and co-edited and published from 1944-1999 by Poet and Professor Theodore (Ted) Weiss and his wife, Renée Weiss. This issue contains work by George Seferis, E. E. Cummings, Ann Adams, George W. Nitchie, George P. Elliott, and Atsushi Nakajima. George Seferis' entry, an early Seferis Poem titled "Myth of Our History" ("Mithhistorima" in anglicized Greek), was translated by Kimon Friar whose introduction of Seferis precedes the Poem in this issue. This is a very good copy with some of the typical bending and wear at the wrapper edges caused by their being larger than the page block. This copy has been SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS at his entry and is ALSO SIGNED BY KIMON FRIAR at the head of his introduction. In the Quarterly Review of Literature, Ted and Renée Weiss frequently published Poets and other Authors, such as John Ashbery and Ted Hughes, before they achieved much acclaim. Though by 1953, Seferis' work had been published in English, in England, we find no earlier publication of his work in America. A Greek Diplomat, Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. Kimon Friar was a noted Greek-American Poet, an editor of periodicals dealing with Greek culture, and a translator of Greek Poetry including, most notably, Nikos Kazantzakis' epic poem "The Odyssey: A Modern Sequel". Beyond our shelves, books signed by George Seferis are quite scarce. A Very Good copy of the important American debut publication of George Seferis's work, SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS and also SIGNED BY THE TRANSLATOR KIMON FRIAR.

Revolución!! Perhaps the earliest and most important manuscript of the Cuban Revolution in private hands. All the Moncada Prisoners sign a letter of appreciation to champions of their cause: <I>"...our tasks are firm to serve the ideals, our formula of action demands continuity of our efforts that is why from here we will fight...". This was probably smuggled out of Isle of Pines Prison when, days before, Castro wrote "History Will Absolve Me"</I>

The 2-page handwritten manuscript is dated December 6, 1953 and written on beige lined paper, and reads: "Kind and distinguished lady: Together with these sincere lines are attached the affection and respect from all my partners. I was motivated with the idea of writing you because of your admiration towards myself that made the fibers of my heart vibrate with an accelerated rate that was motivated by your eloquent lines. We read your poem and it left us all inspired by the kindness of your phrases, my partners and I, are very lovers of the poetry, that is why I take the opportunity to tell you that you are an excellent poetry writer. In those difficult moments that I used to have with frequency I will remember your beautiful thoughts and incomparable ideals, this has been the formula that with effectiveness have changed during these days my sadness towards happiness. You know that our tasks are firm to serve the ideals, our formula of action demands continuity of our efforts that is why from here we will
