The Game Of Golf In East Africa

Nairobi: W. Boyd 1953 - A compilation of East African golfing records, particularly dealing with Kenya. Histories of Kenya's golf clubs, with lists of past captains and presidents, fill much of the book. There are also articles comparing golf in Kenya with the sport in Britain and on the visit of the professionals Hagen and Kirkwood in 1937. This scarce work was written at the height of the Mau Mau uprising against the colonial powers responsible for introducing the sport, and the President of the Kenya Golf Union was murdered shortly after publication. The advertisments which feature throughout the book are also of interest. 8vo. 288pp. Numerous b/w photographs. Original maroon cloth, gilt lettering to f/c and spine. Obit note announcing the death of G.L.G. Shaw, President of The Kenya Golf Union, pasted to front end-paper, light spotting to titlepage. A good copy and uncommon. [D&M, 21370]

        Detection Unlimited

London: Heinemann, 1953. Black cloth titled in gilt on spine. This book carries a unique inscription in the front endpaper dated Dec. 7th, 1953 "For Enid Chasemore with love from Georgette Heyer" signed in navy fountain pen ink. There is little to say about the provenance other than that Enid Chasemore was one of the author's closest friends who moved to live in South Africa. The book subsequently found its way to Melbourne and then to New Zealand. The signature compares favourably with examples shown on specialist websites. There is minor wear to the cover and some light foxing in a few pages, one rust spot in the top edges.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Hardback.

        Untitled Drawing [Gestalt]

np, nd. 8 1/2 x 8”, ink on paper. Undated. Signed by Duncan within the image. Provenance: from the collection of the artist Ernesto Edwards, a longtime friend of Jess and Robert Duncan, who has a section devoted to his work in An Opening of the Field (pp. 188-193). A beautiful line drawing portrait of an unknown woman. The gestalt style of the drawing is perhaps influenced by Freud, who was an important influence on Duncan. The style of portraiture is somewhat similar to his 1953 drawing “Faust Foutu” [Duncan & Wagstaff p. 31] and his 1946 work “Self Portrait with Shadow” [Ibid p. 109]. &

L'attrape-coeurs. Traduit de l'américain par Jean-Baptiste Rossi. (Plus connu sous le nom de Sébastien Japrisot).

      - Robert Laffont, Collection Pavillons. Paris 1953. 252 pages. Edition originale de la traduction, pas de grand papier annoncé. Rare et bel exemplaire. L'Attrape-coeurs (The Catcher in the Rye) est un roman de J. D. Salinger.

Junkie. Confessions of an unredeemed Drug Addict [bound together with an abridged reprint of] Narcotic Agent, [by] Maurice Helbrant, Formerly of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics, United States Treasury Department.

New York: Ace Books, Inc., 1953 - Perfect-bound reversible "Ace Double". Original pictorial wrappers. Some light rubbing to extremities and creasing to corners, edges browned but otherwise an unusually well preserved copy in very good condition. First edition, first printing. Containing Burroughs's first book, this is by far the most collectible of the Ace Double Books series, and presents, with Junkie and Narcotic Agent uncomfortably pressed together in one volume, a microcosmic metaphor for the strained relationship between culture and counter-culture in 50s America. The Song of Love and Death of Standard-Bearer Christoph Rilke [Cornet Christoph Rilke]

New York 1953 - The Song of Love and Death of Standard-Bearer Christoph Rilke [Cornet Christoph Rilke]. Translation of Emlen Etting, with his original illustrations. Typed manuscript, title page + 28 pp., dated 1953, with pencil ms. emendations and six original erotic ink and water-color illustrations by noted painter Emlen Etting, signed. The ms. is typed on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper, while the water-color illustrations are on the verso of blank letterhead of the Philadelphia chapter of the Artists Equity Association [of which Etting was at the time Chairman], that paper being watermarked parchment stationery. An unpublished translation of Rainer Maria Rilke's prose poem (1899) of war, love, and sex, and the surreal but heroic death of Christoph Rilke in the seventeenth century, accompanied by what would have been its erotic illustrations. Slumbering nudes, mortally wounded heroes in the buff, and love-making couples appear to be thematically revised as proofs. The original manila envelope in which all this was contained is included, addressed from Etting at his Philadelphia address to himself in care of Midtown Galleries in New York City, and says, in part, "6 Preparatory Sketches for 'Lovers' / Rilke's Song of Love and Death of the Standard-Bearer". Rilke's singular prose poem, published as part of other titles but (apparently) never separately, was, by the name Cornet Christoph Rilke's Song of Love and Death (and other variants), the basis of an opera by Siegfried Matthus, a symphony by Viktor Ullmann, and other artistic treatments. Etting's translation here carries, alternately and sometimes together, stark, surreal, dreamlike, melodic and poetic tone, presumably true to the Rilke original, the reading of which in its original language I am incapable. In any case, here it is deeply and strangely moving in its own right. I found myself reading it aloud, as if it were a play. Title sheet of manuscript slightly torn at top (see scan); some see- through from verso of the water-colors. Overall better than very good. Not bound. LG-1 [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

Annapurna -- Heroic Conquest of the Highest Mountain -- 26,493 Ft -- Ever Climbed By Man"

E.P, Dutton, New York 1953 - This is a unique copy of probably the most important and landbreaking book in the history of mountaineering. The account itself is almost a breathtaking read, vividly but soberly written and superbly translated from the French. Herzog was the leader of the French Himalayan expedition, which was the first in history to scale an 8,000 meter peak. He made the climb without oxygen but lost several of his fingers, which had to be amputated without anesthetic, and he endured other harrowing hardships. Herzog inscribed this copy in French to Thomas Pickering, America's most senior diplomat and career ambassador during the late 1990s and early 2000s. At first look, the inscription resembles some childish scribbling on the ffep, but one quickly recognizes that it was probably signed by Herzog for Ambassador Pickering while they were together on the slope of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, at 4,035 meters. (13,238 feet). The entire inscription reads, "14/5/68 (looks like the "6" is written over a "7") "Mon Compagne Thom, a la Montagne, Kenya. M. Herzog. 4.035 m." The binding is clean and tight, straight and unmarked save for the inscription, with no foxing. This book, on publication, was not of the highest quality in either paper or binding, but it has suffered very little deterioration except for signs of age. This copy is in blue cloth boards, with black spine and silver lettering on the spine. There is a small BCE dot on the bottom of the rear board near the spine, but no further indication that it is a BCE. This volume most likely came directly from Amb Pickering's library. The DJ is strong but with noticeable wear on the edges and 2-3 small abrasions on the rear cover in the background of the photo of Herzog. The DJ is price-clipped on the bottom flap, and "Fifth Printing" is clearly stated. Best guess is that this is a BCE with fifth printing DJ. Ambassador Pickering has affixed his signature in ink at the top of the ffep ("Thomas R. Pickering.") The DJ is slightly chipped at top and bottom of the spine, and there are small tears in the middle and at the top. The condition is pretty strong considering this copy was probably actually carried down Mt. Kilimanjaro by the recipient, Ambassador Pickering. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
