Oversized Color Photograph inscribed and signed by President Truman and presented by him to his Secretary of the Treasury John W Snyder when he left office in January 1953

"Photograph Signed ?To John W. Snyder, a great Secretary of the Treasury, / a man I?m proud to call friend, with affectionate regards / Harry S. Truman / White House, / Jan 16, 1953? on the mat. Color, 13.25? x 16.75? image, overall 15.25? x 20.25?. Framed to 21.5?x 26.75?. Light dampstaining at concluding portion of Truman?s writing, not materially affecting its appearance. Fine condition.John W. Snyder (1895-1985) first met Harry S. Truman in 1928. They served together in the Army Reserves after World War I. Under President Truman, Snyder served as Federal Loan Administrator (April 30, 1945, to July 23, 1945), Director of the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion (July 23, 1945, to June 25, 1946), and Secretary of the Treasury (June 25, 1946, to January 20, 1953). Only six other Secretaries of the Treasury served longer terms. On January 14, 1953, Snyder sent his letter of resignation to President Truman. On January 16, 1953, the day he presented this photograph to Snyder, President Truman replied to Snyder?s letter. From the Truman Library website:?Dear John: I am sure that no President ever received more dependable advice and assistance than you have given me during the period of almost eight years since I called you back from St. Louis in April 1945, to join my administration. Your service as Federal Loan Administrator, as Director of the Office of War Mobilization and Reconversion, and finally as Secretary of the Treasury has been as beneficial to the country as it has been helpful to me personally. Your direction of the Government's fiscal affairs, your handling of many problems and responsibilities of international economic policy, and your outstanding leadership in the improvement of Government administration, all merit not only my own personal appreciation and that of your associates in the Government, but also the esteem of every citizen. The judgment and understanding with which you have represented the United States--and on occasion, the President personally-in international consultations here and abroad have been other evidences of the honor and competence with which you filled a place of first importance in the public service. I appreciate above all your unselfish and unfailing friendship. Sincerely yours, Harry S. Truman.? Photocopy of this letter is present."

        Casino Royale

London: Jonathan Cape, 1953. First edition of the author's first book that introduced James Bond to the world. Octavo, original black cloth. In very good condition. Casino Royale was written by Ian Fleming in Jamaica over a period of around two months, largely from his own experiences and imagination; he also devised the artwork for the cover. "Within the first few pages Fleming had introduced most of Bond's idiosyncrasies and trademarks, which included his looks, his Bentley and his smoking and drinking habits. The full details of Bond's martini were kept until chapter seven of the book and Bond eventually named it "The Vesper", after Vesper Lynd" (Andrew Lycett). It has been filmed twice as a feature film, the first being the 1967 spoof starring David Niven, and later as the twenty-first official Bond film starring Daniel Craig as James Bond.

The War Speeches of the Rt Hon Winston S Churchill

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1953. First U.S. edition, only printing. Hardcover. Very good/Good. This is the elusive U.S. first "Definitive" edition, only printing of Churchill's war speeches. During his long public life, Winston Churchill played many roles worthy of historical note - member of Parliament for more than half a century, distinguished soldier and war correspondent, author of scores of books, ardent social reformer, combative cold warrior, Nobel Prize winner. But more than anything else, it was Winston Churchill's leadership during the Second World War that made him a preeminent historical figure. Of Churchill, Edward R. Murrow said: "He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle." Between 1941 and 1946, Churchill's war speeches were published in seven individual volumes in both British and U.S. editions. In 1952, during Churchill's second premiership, the British publisher - Cassell - reissued the War Speeches as a new, "Definitive" three-volume British edition. This U.S. edition was issued in 1953. The three-volume edition of Churchill's War Speeches is considered superior to the original seven wartime volumes. New speeches are added, as is a very helpful index. Some of the original speeches considered peripheral are eliminated while others are retitled and chronological dates are replaced with brief transitional or introductory notes. There were 4,700 copies of the British first edition, first printing, but this incredibly small U.S. edition was limited to a mere 500 copies produced from British edition sheets. (Internally, only the title and copyright pages differ from the British edition.) This U.S. first edition, only printing was bound quite differently from its English counterpart and more elaborately, with a black cloth spine decorated and printed in gilt, over red cloth boards, yellow-stained top edge, and head and foot bands. The light blue and black dust jackets are illustrated with a reproduction from Churchill's hand-corrected typescript of the first Secret Session speech. Here is a full U.S. three volume set, very good in good dust jackets. The bindings are square and tight with bright spine gilt and only minor wear to extremities. The contents retain a crisp feel and show no internal spotting. The yellow-stained top edges retain even color. We note two names on each first free endpaper - one ink-stamped and another hand written. Modest spotting is confined to the text block edges. The dust jackets remain bright and unclipped, with no dulling of the spine color and all "3 Volumes, $25.00" prices intact on the front flaps. Nonetheless, we grade these dust jackets as only "good" owing to considerable edge wear and some losses to extremities, as well as some modest staining. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Bibliographic reference: Cohen A263.2, Woods A136(b), Langworth p.305

        Against the Fall of Night

(New York): Gnome Press. (1953). First. First edition. A chip at the crown of both the book and the jacket, thus good or a little better in an about very good dustwrapper. Inscribed by Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley, who was the dedicatee of his first hardcover novel (Islands in the Sky): "To Ian, my favorite American, on -- appropriately enough -- the day of the solar eclipse -- 30 June 56. Arthur." Macauley was an award-winning New York Times journalist who also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood's End, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta in 1952, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A splendid association copy. .
