Mexico City, 1953. Offset lithograph, image measuring 22 x 22, linen-backed, with the linen extending beyond the image for two inches in each dimension. Very good; a few small tears around the edges, some very minor touch-up work, but skillfully done and unobtrusive. A typically arresting image from Renau, a.k.a. Josep Renau Berenguer (1907-1982), one of several great poster artists working in exile in Mexico in the 40's and 50's. Professionally mounted on conservation grade linen.

A French composer, pianist and ethnomusicologist of Hungarian birth, Arma studied the piano at the Budapest Academy of Music with Bartók. "[He] began his career as a member of the Budapest Piano Trio (1925?-6). Between 1924 and 1930 he gave many recitals in Europe and the USA and lectured on contemporary music at American universities. He settled in Germany in 1931, and for a time he led the musical activities at the Dessau Bauhaus, lecturing on modern music and experimenting with electronic music produced on gramophone record... The advent of the Nazi regime in Germany forced his move to Paris, where he made his permanent home... From the 1950s he was associated with RTF musique concrète group... As a composer he is known chiefly for his experimental work." Vera Lampert in Grove Music Online "Many artists have created covers expressly for the music of the composer and pianist Paul Arma (born Imre Weiosshaus in Budapest in 1905)... The texts, each by a contemporary author, reflect on the ravages and mindlessness of war, on justice, and on man's destiny. Arma's personal friendship with these artists resulted in this collaboration, and most of the drawings were inspired by the music itself."         Celui qui ne m'accompagnait pas EDITION ORIGINALE Service de presse ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE

Paris: Gallimard, 1953. Fine. Gallimard, Paris 1953, 12x19cm, broché. - First Edition, review copy. Very valuable and exciting autograph signed and dated by the author to his mother and his sister: "For you, dearest mom / and for you, dear Marg / this story that would first tell you about my affection with all my gratitude. " Marguerite Blanchot, renowned organist Chalon Cathedral, remained all his life in the family home with his mother and aunt. "It will gradually become, for the family, as the memory of origins." Very close to Maurice, she regularly corresponded with the writer who reflects him great recognition for his dedication to their helpless mother. If intense affection Blanchot for his mother and his sister shines in dedications of it, we know almost nothing of their relations. In the only biographical essay on Blanchot, Christophe Bident reveals, however: "Marguerite Maurice Blanchot worshiped his brother very proud of him, (...) it attached great importance to his political ideas (...) She read a lot (.... .) They phoned corresponded. A distance, they shared the same natural authority, the same concern for discretion. " Blanchot address him indeed many books from his library, now with her continuous intellectual link. As the passion of Blanchot for his mother, it is the turn of his work that we discover the finest examples: "Maybe the power of the mother figure she borrows its brightness to the same power fascination, and one could say that if the mother carries this fascinating attraction is as appearing when the child lives entirely under the gaze of fascination, it concentrates in itself all the powers of enchantment ". Cultivating absolute discretion, Blanchot pushed the art of erasing into his handwritten dedications generally brief and almost always written on cards attached to the rare books he offered his close friends. In contrast, in these precious autograph dedication of the authors to his mother and sister, Blanchot offers in all its fragility and reveals a hitherto unknown intimacy. Complete copy of its nice trailer. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate. Contact us for any information!

BRIGADE ORDERS FOR THE ROYAL NAVY AND THE ROYAL MARINES AT THE CORONATION 1953

Naval Brigade Headquarters, Admiralty, Whitehall, S. W. 1., London 1953 - A very detailed and meticulous work with numerous maps, folding tables and general and specific instructions. Seemingly very rare, no copy on Copac and we have been unable to find any internet or other references to this work. General title page followed by five sections, each section with a card title page and thumb tab to the fore-edge. Part 1 General Orders: with text pages and 5 large folding tables; Part II Orders for Guards of Honour: text pages plus 1 folding table; Part III Orders for the Processional Contingent: text pages plus 3 folding tables/plans including one long five-fold plan showing "Composition of Naval Processional Contingent" and 3 folding maps; Part IV Orders for the Street Lining Contingent: text pages, various folding table and five large folding maps (partly printed in colour) of which a couple are particularly substantial; Part V Orders for Cadets Lining the Route: text pages with various folding maps, plans and tables. Original binding of Blue cloth with paper covered boards, title printed to the front board. In manuscript to the front board "Captain J. A. Creed[?] V. R. S. R.N.V.R. Copy no. 3." Binding generally very good with a little general wear and some fading, contents clean and tight, a couple of maps with very short tears at point of fixing to book. A very scarce work meticulously detailing the important roll of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines in the Coronation of 1953, including a number of spectacular maps. Bibliographic note: Clearly multiple copies of this document were printed as indicated by maps printed on colour; also the title page states "Relevant parts of these orders are to be studied by all Officers and Men of the Naval Brigade down to Unite Commander (Procession) and Platoon P. O. or S. N. C. O. (Street Lining)" which would require many more than one copy; but presumably most copies were disposed of after the event, rendering extant copies extremely scarce.         Molecular Structure of Nucleic Acids. A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid

[London:] Reprinted from Nature, Vol. 171, p. 737, 25 April,, 1953. [Together with] M. F. H. Wilkins, A. R. Stokes, & H. R. Wilson: Molecular Structure of Deoxypentose Nucleic Acids. [And] Rosalind E. Franklin & R. G. Gosling: Molecular Configuration in Sodium Thymonucleate. [In] Nature, Vol. 171. 7 page pamphlet, staple-bound. 2 diagrams (including the double helix), 2 illustrations from photographs. Very small light crease at fore-edge. First edition, the rare offprint of the announcement of the structure of DNA, one of the most important scientific achievements of the 20th century. DNA was discovered by a Swiss physician in 1869, and over the succeeding years many researchers investigated its structure and function, with some arguing that it might be the molecule of genetic inheritance. By the early 1950s this was one of the most important questions in biology, and a number of teams were attempting to crack the puzzle. Maurice Wilkins of King's College London and his colleague Rosalind Franklin were both working on DNA, with Franklin producing X-ray crystallography images of its structure. Wilkins also introduced his friend Francis Crick to the subject, and Crick and his partner James Watson began their own investigation at Cambridge, focusing on molecular models. After one failed attempt in which they postulated a triple-helix, they were banned by their laboratory from spending any additional time on the subject. But a year later, after seeing fresh data from King's, they began work again and announced that not only had they discovered the double-helix structure of DNA, but even more importantly, that "the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material". The resulting paper was rushed to press in Nature, along with corresponding work by Franklin and Wilkins, who were only revealed much later to have been the primary sources of data for Watson and Crick's hypothesis. This offprint of these celebrated papers is printed from the same type as the journal printing. The articles were originally set in a single column of monotype, from which the offprint was produced, while the journal itself was made in double columns from stereotype plates taken from the monotype. A superb copy of the founding document of modern biology.
