Also included is \'Courses et Elevage\' Tables Genealogiques. These volumes cover the genealogical history of over 50,000 racehorses from the 18th century to the mid 20th century. Volume I is a fold-out double page directory charting the history of each stud. The \'Bobinski Tables\' form the cornerstone of any thoroughbred pedigree research library. Historically, \'The Family Tables of English Thoroughbred Stock\', published in German in 1885 by Herman Goos, were followed by Lowe who was only able to identified 43 families; Goos had identified 61. Goos’s book was republished in 1897, with 50 family charts, but now using Lowe’s system of numbering families, with family number 1 being the foundation mare to whom the most classic winners traced in tail-female descent. Goos’s genealogical charts set the model for a number of later publications, the most significant and comprehensive being by Bobinski and Zamoyski. \'The Bobinski Tables\', identified a total of 74 families tracing mares, the first 49 of which were based on Lowe and Goos, and subdivided the families alphabetically, as in \"1-a,\" to denote various significant branches. In addition, they expanded research into female families of racehorses including Polish (P), Argentine (Ar), American (A), and Colonial (C)-Australian and New Zealand-female lines, and half-bred families (HB). The second, updated volume of the Bobinski Tables was then issued in 1963. The system of identifying female lines by Lowe family number persists to this day. The increasing sophistication of commercial pedigree databases now available to the general public, breed historians, pedigree fans, and bloodstock consultants means that anyone interested in the heritage of throughbreed horses will consider deep analysis of family numbers useful in planning matings and checking form.         In Cold Hell in Thicket

Divers Press / Origin, Palma de Mallorca 1953 - A notable association copy of a major Olson work. Olson and Shahn met as co-workers at the Office of War Information in WWII, where they collaborated on Olson's first published book, a pamphlet titled Spanish Speaking Americans in the War. In 1951, Olson invited Shahn onto the faculty of Black Mountain College, where Ben and Bernarda spent a summer teaching painting and graphic arts; among the Shahns' students were Robert Rauschenberg, Suzi Gablik and Francine du Plessix Gray (who quickly, perhaps wisely, switched to studying poetry with Olson). Small square octavo (21cm x 18cm). Issued as Origin 8. Original plain wrappers in patterned, printed dustjacket; unpaged [63pp]. Inscribed by Olson on front endpaper: "for Ben & Bernarda Shahn / with love / Charles Olson," undated. Dustwrapper and endpapers toned and foxed, else Very Good. "Charles Olson" hand-lettered on spine, probably in either Ben or Bernarda's hand. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Prototype Sports Car Concept Art

Boston, 1953. Tempera on paper. Initialled "R.S.W." Mounted circular label, lower right. Handsome 1950's sports car design All of our present information about this drawing comes from a label on the back of the piece, which indicates that it comes from the archives of the A.J. White Motor Vehicle Research Company - designers of exotic cars in the Boston, MA area. We have not discovered any further information about the A. J. White Research Company thus far, nor about the artist, R.S.W. of this particular drawing. There does not appear to be any connection to the great White truck manufacturer. The drawing itself is especially nice, its cool red sportscar positioned diagonally between two details in blue, in a way that makes it appear anxious to move.

A French composer, pianist and ethnomusicologist of Hungarian birth, Arma studied the piano at the Budapest Academy of Music with Bartók. "[He] began his career as a member of the Budapest Piano Trio (1925-6). Between 1924 and 1930 he gave many recitals in Europe and the USA and lectured on contemporary music at American universities. He settled in Germany in 1931, and for a time he led the musical activities at the Dessau Bauhaus, lecturing on modern music and experimenting with electronic music produced on gramophone record. The advent of the Nazi regime in Germany forced his move to Paris, where he made his permanent home. From the 1950s he was associated with RTF musique concrète group. As a composer he is known chiefly for his experimental work." Vera Lampert in Grove Music Online"Many artists have created covers expressly for the music of the composer and pianist Paul Arma (born Imre Weiosshaus in Budapest in 1905). The texts, each by a contemporary author, reflect on the ravages and mindlessness of war, on justice, and on man's destiny. Arma's personal friendship with these artists resulted in this collaboration, and most of the drawings were inspired by the music itself."         Autograph manuscript quotation, signed, in English, of the culminating portion of THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN

Two pages, 10 inches x 8 inches, matted and framed with a portrait of Mann. Some archivally repaired tears on verso. Mann here has clearly written 47 lines containing most of the climactic paragraph from the chapter "Snow" (utilising Helen Lowe-Porter's English translation), beginning "I hereby declare that I have a prescriptive right to lie here and dream these dreams" until "For the sake of goodness and love, man shall let death have no sovereignty over his thoughts. -- And with this -- I awake". By his selection here Mann emphasized the centrality of these passages, and he later would point to this chapter "Snow" as the containing heart of what his novel concerned, writing "Perhaps you will read the book again....And perhaps you will find out what the Grail is: the knowledge and the wisdom, the consecration, the highest reward, for which ... the book itself is seeking. You will find it in the chapter called 'Snow,' where Hans Castorp, lost on the perilous heights, dreams his dream of humanity...." "The Making of The Magic Mountain," in "The Atlantic," January 1953. Mann gave his own manuscripts, and (with Einstein, Werfel, Lotte Lehmann, Elizabeth Bergman, and Emil Ludwig), signed an appeal for other manuscript donations at bond rallies in 1943-1945. Original manuscripts donated by the authors (including this one) were awarded as premiums to the largest purchasers of bonds. See "List of Manuscripts Awarded by the Book and Author War Bond Committee 1943-1946" (Jamaica, N.Y.: Book and Author War Bond Committee / Queens Borough Public Library, 1946) where our manuscript is mentioned.

(NY: Spiral Press), 1953. Grushkin, Philip. First edition. One of 587 copies with Frost's imprint. Decorations by Philip Grushkin. This copy bears an inscription by Frost on the title page to William Sloane and his wife, Julie. Sloane was Frost's editor at Holt and headed up the trade department from 1938 to 1946, when he left to form his own publishing concern. Sloane had his own imprint of the Frost Christmas greeting through 1945. Frost, who remained friendly with Sloane after his departure, signs off this inscription "your faithful friend." Few small, faint spots to tan wrappers, else a fine copy with an equally fine association. (Crane B25).

Four presentation copies of Love Among the Ruins.

London: Chapman and Hall,, 1953. Together 4 copies, octavo. Volume I: spine and edges of board faded, endpapers spotted. Excellent condition. Volume II: lightly rubbed at extremities, spine a little faded, contents spotted. Volume III: front board missing, rear board creased, several pages torn, contents spotted. Lower portion of dust jacket lacking. Intentionally poor copy, see catalogue note. Volume IV: spine and edge of front board faded, endpapers spotted. Excellent condition. A sequence of presentation copies chronicling Waugh's humorous attack on Angie Laycock's unresponsiveness when sent an inscribed copy of the book. The first book Waugh sent was number 29 of the deluxe issue of 350 large paper copies, inscribed by him on the limitation leaf, "For Darling Angie the Beardless Beauty, with love from Evelyn". Laycock failed to respond to this presentation, and so Waugh sent her a copy of the first edition, trade issue. On the front free endpaper, he drew a snake in red and black ink and wrote in capitals, "I am a very austere snake. I don't like editions de luxe. Give me the people's edition & maybe I shall thank you". When this was ignored, Waugh subjected another copy of the trade edition to violence, removing the front board and large portions of the dust jacket and soiling and tearing the contents. A snake in black ink graces the verso of the title page, where Waugh has written, "I'm a rough tough kind of snake. This is how I like books to be". Finally, when no response was forthcoming, Waugh sent Laycock a blank book bound in red cloth. On the first leaf he drew an elaborately detailed snake and wrote "This edition is limited to one copy numbered, and signed by the author. No One" with "Anon" as the signature. In the blank spaces between the snakes coils he inscribed, "I am a simple little serpent. This is the only kind of book I can read".

        Plastik - Graphik [und] Fluxus Ausstellung. Ausstellungen im Hause van der Grinten, Kranenburg, 22. Februar - 15. März [1953] / 27. 10. - 24.11.1963.

Kranenburg. [Hans und Franz Josef van der Grinten]. [1953] - 1963. [Vgl. Weiß/Britsch 1; Isabel Siben. Beuys Plakate / Posters 1 und 2]. Versand D: 2,00 EUR 20. Housed in a custom black quarter leather solander box. Small ownership signature to front free endpaper. "According to the Cape archives, 4760 sets of sheets of the first printing were delivered, but only 4728 copies were bound up.
