        Indio do Brasil

Ministerio da Agricultura 1953 - Rondon was by anyone's standards a quite remarkable man. An army officer he oversaw the development of the telegraph system in Brazil. He was an explorer who found both new rivers and new peoples. He was a practical anthropologist, taking the indigenous people into partnership (and his predecessors had frequently been killed by them). He named a river and went on an expedition with President Teddy Roosevelt to explore it. There is a region named after him and the first Brazilian National Pazrk was created by him. Sub title -Cabeceiras do Rio Xingu, Rios Araguaia e Oiapoque. This is volume 2 of a three volume set published in the middle fifties by the Ministerio da Agricultura in Rio de Janeiro. It is a large book with a very large number of sepia photographs. There is marked tanning of all the pages. No DJ. Binding good. The text is exclusively in Portuguese This set is very rare - and expensive - and even the individual volumes are sought after [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Also included is 'Courses et Elevage' Tables Genealogiques. These volumes cover the genealogical history of over 50,000 racehorses from the 18th century to the mid 20th century. Volume I is a fold-out double page directory charting the history of each stud. The 'Bobinski Tables' form the cornerstone of any thoroughbred pedigree research library. Historically, 'The Family Tables of English Thoroughbred Stock', published in German in 1885 by Herman Goos, were followed by Lowe who was only able to identified 43 families; Goos had identified 61. Goos’s book was republished in 1897, with 50 family charts, but now using Lowe’s system of numbering families, with family number 1 being the foundation mare to whom the most classic winners traced in tail-female descent. Goos’s genealogical charts set the model for a number of later publications, the most significant and comprehensive being by Bobinski and Zamoyski. 'The Bobinski Tables', identified a total of 74 families tracing mares, the first 49 of which were based on Lowe and Goos, and subdivided the families alphabetically, as in "1-a," to denote various significant branches. In addition, they expanded research into female families of racehorses including Polish (P), Argentine (Ar), American (A), and Colonial (C)-Australian and New Zealand-female lines, and half-bred families (HB). The second, updated volume of the Bobinski Tables was then issued in 1963. The system of identifying female lines by Lowe family number persists to this day. The increasing sophistication of commercial pedigree databases now available to the general public, breed historians, pedigree fans, and bloodstock consultants means that anyone interested in the heritage of throughbreed horses will consider deep analysis of family numbers useful in planning matings and checking form.         Nine Stories

Boston: Little Brown and Co., 1953 First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth, lettered in gilt; in the original red and blue dust jacket designed by Miriam Woods, lettered in white and black. About near fine, with some light wear to the extremities, minor rubbing to the spine, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket, with some faint toning to the spine, some minor chips to the spine ends, some light rubbing and a few nicks to the extremities, short loss to the top right edge of the front panel, crease and a short closed tear to the bottom edge of the front panel, otherwise fresh panels. A very good copy without the usual fading to the jacket. Nine Stories is a collection of short fiction that includes "A Perfect Day for Bananafish," "Uncle Wiggily in Connecticut," "Just Before the War with the Eskimos," "The Laughing Man," "Down the Dinghy," "For Esmé - with Love and Squalor," "Pretty Mouth and Green My Eyes," "De Daumier-Smith's Blue Period," and "Teddy." Although many of the stories feature the various members of Salinger's fictional Glass family, Nine Stories is perhaps best-known for "For Esmé," a story set during and in the immediate aftermath of World War II. In contrast to the United States' increasing romantic memory of WWII, Salinger the negative affects war has on civilian life even after armistice with this story of withdrawn, orphaned children and a soldier suffering with disillusionment and post-traumatic stress disorder..         Front grill concept design

1953. Watercolour and pastel on composition board. Signed, "Arbib '53" A striking frontal encounter with an innovative grill design This full-on, confrontational drawing of a new front grill by RIchard Arbib embodies the thrill of innovation that played such a large part of car design in the 1950's. During this rather euphoric period, cars became more open, colourful and "modernistic": curvilinear and sleek. In Arbib's picture, we come right up against a shield-like center piece that branches out to either side in a no nonsense, two level bumper and that threatens to knock us down, despite the genial, middle-aged driver. Elements of this front configuration appeared in many incarnations in subsequent years. Richard Arbib was a tireless industrial designer whose work ranged from watches to yachts, and included many lasting automotive innovations. Born in Gloversville, New York of Egyptian parentage, he attended Pratt. He worked on GM's exhibition at the 1939 World's Fair, and then various automotive, industrial and military designers (during the war) until he set up his own firm in New York in 1949. His work during the 1950's was especially important to the future as many of his dynamic and "space-age" designs were incorporated into production models of the late 50's, 60's and 70's. He also supplied illustrations to science fiction magazines and novels. Scharf, Richard H. Arbib 1917-1995 Visionary American Designer . 2006.

        PICK-UP - ORIGINAL COVER PAINTING

N.p.: S.i., [1953]. Original artwork by Frank Upwall, rendered in oil on paper. Single sheet measuring 24" x 36.75", dry-mounted to artboard to an overall size of 27" x 40"; signed by artist at lower center. Not framed. Possible faint surface scratch in sky near upper left edge, else Fine. Stunning cover painting for Charles Willeford's 'Pick-Up,' his second book, issued as a paperback original by Beacon in 1955. A nihilistic, early novel, following "the pilgrimage of two lost and self-destructive lovers through the depths of San Francisco, from cheap bars and roominghouses to psychiatric clinics and police stations" (Polito, Robert (ed.) Crime Novels: American Noir of the 1950's. Library of America). Though the image at the far right of the painting is the most recognizable, the artwork first saw publication as the wrap-around cover art for George Weller's 'Highway Episode' (Royal Giant #21, 1953). Upwall's painting ranks among the earliest original artwork for a Willeford novel we have seen or handled.

Junkie: Confessions of an Unredeemed Drug Addict (First Edition, inscribed to Allen De Loach)

New York: Ace Books, 1953. First Edition. No. D-15. First Edition, a paperback original. INSCRIBED by Burroughs, once on the title page of "Junkie": "For Allen De Loach / With friendship and all best wishes / William Lee Burroughs / April 27, 1974"; and once on the title page of Maurice Helbrant's "Narcotic Agent," printed dos-a-dos with "Junkie": "For Allen De Loach / William S. Burroughs." Burroughs' first book, inscribed to a close friend and important supporter. Allen De Loach edited the mimeo journal "Intrepid" out of Buffalo, New York. Like "Floating Bear," "Intrepid" was a mailing-list-distributed mimeo. Its issue 14/15 was dedicated entirely to the work of Burroughs and was the first serious and comprehensive examination of Burroughs' post-"Naked Lunch" work. De Loach often hosted Burroughs both at his home and for readings and events at SUNY Buffalo, where he also taught. Their friendship continued until Burroughs' death. De Loach also published most of the Beats under his Intrepid Press imprint, including books from Allen Ginsberg, Peter Orlovsky, Ray Bremser, and Burroughs himself. Burroughs, under his William Lee pseudonym, also edited **Buffalo Cold Spring Precinct 23 Bulletin** (Buffalo NY: Intrepid Press 1971). A warm and significant association. Very good in original pictorial wrappers. Some mild, inoffensive creasing and rubbing to the wrapper. Pages mildly toned. Else clean and sound. [Maynard and Miles A1].

There is evidence Le Corbellier frequently referred to this book. On some pages, Le Corbeiller has penciled mathematical equations, short notes, and numerous page references to other pages. There are a few photographs of scientists from magazines tipped onto pages mentioning them. The book itself has a partial split at front joint, partial splits inside and at front and back between covers and pages, slight separation between two sections within the text, all due to frequent use by Le Corbeiller. Overall, book is in good condition."

[Photo Album]: British Soldiers in Korea and Environs

Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malta, Aden. 1953. Large oblong octavo. String-tied red leather-grained cloth over boards. 84 gelatin silver snapshot images (and one commercial image) mounted from one to six to a page, rectos only, mostly captioned. Each page with glassine tissue guard. Images range mostly between 2" x 2.5" and 3" x 4.5". The photos are mostly fine, modest wear to the binding, but sound and very good. The captioned images indicate a sea voyage that commences on H.M.S. Dilward in March, 1953, through the Suez Canal. Arriving in Korea at "Area 3," about 22 images follow showing British soldiers in camp, with the dining tent, preparing tea, the parade ground, a batman at work, three of weapons cleaning by both British or Korean Troops, a couple of group portraits of 1st Platoon, A Company (laid in is a sheet of paper where someone has made a contemporary list of the names of the soldiers in the Platoon), along with shirtless and identified images of a few soldiers, the Korean Cook, a Korean named "Scochie," referred to as "A Katcom," and the R.M. Band as they leave Kure on H.M.T. Asturias in August, 1953 (shortly after the ceasefire on July 27th). The journey continues to Hong Kong (with a partially obscured image of a "Drunken Ex-POW" being restrained on a gangplank; the next stop is Singapore with images of the city (and four of the Raffles Hotel); the rest are uncaptioned and seem to indicate a journey back to the Middle East with shipboard images, beach scenes, and three of a boxing match. A pleasing albeit brief representation of the British experience in the last few months of the Korean Conflict, and in our experience not often seen. .

White Christmas (Original screenplay for the 1954 film)

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1953. Final White script for the 1954 film. One of the great Christmas musicals, featuring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye at the peak of their fame. Filmed as something between a remake of and a follow-up to "Holiday Inn" (also made by Paramount in 1942), the action takes place mostly in Vermont at an old inn. Corny and heartwarming in the extreme, with a parade of musical numbers penned by Irving Berlin, whose song, "Count Your Many Blessings," made its debut here and was nominated for an Academy Award. White self studio wrappers, noted as FINAL WHITE on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 65, dated July 7, 1953, with credits for screenwriter Krasna. Distribution page integral with the front wrapper, with receipt intact. 98 leaves, mimeograph, with blue and goldenrod revision pages throughout, dated variously between 10-15-53 and 10-21-53. Very Good bound with two gold brads. Hirschhorn, p. 344.

Molecular structure of nucleic acids A structure for deoxyribose nucleic acid

1953. The Double Helix The ?Three-Paper? Offprint, Signed by Five of its Authors Watson, James D. (1928- ) & Crick, Francis H. C. (1916-2004). Molecular structure of nucleic acids. A structure for deoxyribose nucleic acid. With: Wilkins, Maurice (1916-2004); Stokes, A. R.; & Wilson, H. R. Molecular structure of deoxypentose nucleic acids. With: Franklin, Rosalind (1920-58) and Gosling, R. G. Molecular configuration in sodium thymonucleate. Together three papers in a single offprint from Nature 171, no. 4356 (April 25, 1953). 8vo. 13, [1]pp. 211 x 141 mm. Without wrappers as issued. Signed by Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins on the first page, by H. R. Wilson and A. R. Stokes on p. 9, and by R. G. Gosling on the last page. Very good condition. First Editions. Watson and Crick?s discovery of the double-helical structure of DNA is the most important medical and biological discovery of the twentieth century. Their paper first appeared in the scientific journal Nature, grouped, under the general title ?The molecular structure of nucleic acids,? with two other seminal papers on DNA: ?Molecular structure of deoxypentose nucleic acids,? by Maurice Wilkins, A. R. Stokes and H. R. Wilson; and Rosalind Franklin and Raymond Gosling?s ?Molecular configuration in sodium thymonucleate,? which contains Franklin?s famous x-ray photograph of DNA. The journal publication of the three papers was followed by this ?three-paper?offprint for distribution by the various authors. In 1962, Watson, Crick and Wilkins shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Because Franklin had died in 1958 she could not share in the Nobel Prize. As much as the general educated public appreciates the discovery of the double helix today, when the papers were published in 1953 they were only understood and appreciated by the few workers in the field. Thus, Rosalind Franklin was never asked to sign a copy of this offprint, and none exist with her signature. This copy is signed by all participants except Franklin and Watson.

        The Adventures of Augie March

New York: Viking Press, 1953. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author, "For Raymita Chaffee with best wishes Saul Bellow Breadloaf VT, 1954." The recipient was a student of Bellow?'s at Breadloaf. Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket with a closed tear to the crown and a light brown spot to the top right side of the front panel. Contemporary inscriptions are uncommon in this, his third novel and first National Book Award winner. The Adventures of Augie March comes on stage with one of literature's most famous opening lines. "I am an American, Chicago born, and go at things as I have taught myself, free-style, and will make the record in my own way: first to knock, first admitted." Bellow quickly found a receptive audience for his new energetic style. The critic Irving Howe took note of Bellow's "free style" manner, calling it "the first major new style in American prose fiction since those of Hemingway and Faulkner." This novel went on to win the National Book Award for 1954 and was listed on Modern Library's 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century.

        The Crucible.

Viking Press, New York 1953 - First edition of this central work in the canon of American drama. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by Arthur Miller and dated in 1968 on the front free endpaper. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of wear, without the ubiquitous spine fade usually associated with this title. A superior example. The Crucible has been adapted for film, television, and opera. French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre adapted it as the 1958 film Les Sorcières de Salem, and later Miller himself adapted the play as the 1996 film The Crucible. The latter including in its cast Paul Scofield, Daniel Day-Lewis and Winona Ryder, and it earned Miller his only nomination for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. On television, the play has aired in 1968 and 2006. Finally, the play was adapted by composer Robert Ward into an opera in 1961, for which it received the Pulitzer Prize.
